1. INTRODUCTION.

The Savari oil Expeller is a rugged machine, designed andmanufactured to demanding technical specifications inorder to guarantee trouble free and economic operation. The machine is suitable for small scale oil processingenterprises and is well adopted for rural operations. This machine has been found suitable for the processingof the following oil seeds:Sunflower, Simsim, Coconuts, Groundnuts, MoringaOleifera (Mlonge), Neem (muarobaini), Pumpkin, Castor]atrofa and many others.

The Sayari oil expeller is composed of the following parts:The main body is made out of high quality mild sheet of1.5mm thickness and forms the main seed hopper andalso contains the machine drive components. It is stiffened with thick section angle bars to ensurestructural rigidity and integrity. The cage assembly is made out 20mm thick plateconfigured to take the large force arising from thecompression process. The cage assembly contains cage

bars with appropriate spacing for ease of extraction ofexpelled oil and also houses the screw shaft, whichtransfers seed from the hopper to the compressionchamber for oil eh'traction. The screw shaft and cone adjustment assembly comprisesof a shaft assembled with screws and cones of varioussizes designed to effect optimum extraction. TWs alsoenables the adjustment of the gap which determines thecake size and consequently the extraction efficiency(See Figure 1)

IV. INSTALLI.\TION OF OIL EXPELLER.EnlIine Driven:The diesel engine mounted to the frame should be securedby 300mm long foundation bolts. The engine should beselected so as to drive the expeller pulley according to therequired working speed of the screw shaft which is 38 to43 rPID. The tightness of the drive belts should beadjusted appropriately so as to ensure no excessiveslippage of the v-belts which nonnally reduces efficiency.

Page 5: Manual Sayari Oil Expeller

Motor Driven:The motor should be mounted on a heavy metal frame, which is well leveled. The motor and machine pulleyshould be aligned so that the drive belts are in a straightline. The direction of rotation of the motor should conform tothe drive requirement for the expeller.

Expeller:In order to ensure good performance of the expellervarious inspections should be done: -(i) Diesel engine/electrical motor should be selected

to drive the expeller and equipped with a pulleyaccording to working speed of expeller which is 3843 RPM

(ii) The expeller should be fixed on a compact base.(iii) The tension of the chain should be appropriately

adjusted.(iv) Clamps for the lower and upper cage assembly

should be well tightened.(v) The screw shaft should move freely in the cage

assembly.(vi) Bearings and other lubricated parts should be well

greased, ensuring that the lubricants arc filled tothe required level. Grease for the cone adjustmentnipple should be high temperatures grease

(V) OPERATION OF THE OIL E,XPEUER.1.0 PRE-OPERATION:

Before operating the machines the following shouldbe carried out: -1.1 weller:(i) Ensure all loose parts in the machine are

checked and re-tightened, making sure thatthe tightness of V-belts are properlyadjusted.

(ii) Ensure the lubricated parts, oil and otheraccessories are filled accordingly ..

(iii) Sieve the seeds and remove stones, sand, metals and other foreign matter.

(iv) The seeds should be sufficiently dry.

Page 6: Manual Sayari Oil Expeller

1.2 Diesel Engine:(i) Check oil level and refill it according to

manufactures specifications.(ii) All screws and bolts and other subassemblies of

the engine should be checked for proper tightness.(iii) Check cooling water system and refill the reserve

tank to the required level.(iv) Observe all the instructions as instructed by the

Engine Manufacturer.

1.3 Electrical Motor:(i) Check all controls and accessible parts of the

motor.(ii) Check the tension of the V-belts and adjust

accordingly.(Hi) Check loose parts of the motor and fix them.

2.0 OPERATIONStart the engine/motor; it should run 2 - 6minutes without load. The procedure ofe"'Pelling is as follows:

(i) Fill up enough cakes in the machine, andrun so as to warm up the cage assembly.

(ii) Fill up cakes and sieved seeds togethermake sure it has sufficiently warmed up thecage assembly.

(iii) Introduce sieved seed in the hopper and theprocess begins.

(iv) Observe the amount of oil expelled in thetray. In case of expelling insufficient oil, adjustment of screw shaft should be doneby decreasing gape between cone andcollar ring, similarly when there is a buildup of cake in the cage assembly; the screwshaft should be adjusted by increasing thegap between last cone and the collar ring. The adjustment will depend upon the typeand hardness of the seeds.

3.0 MONITORING

When the Engine is running smoothly the followingshould be observed: -3/7/98(i) Abnormal sound.(ii) Heating of the engine.(iii) Abnormal vibrations.

When the expeller is in the operation, thefollowing should be monitored: -

(i) Over load situations e-g cake stacking in the cage.(ti)Excessive temperature of the motor lengine.(iii)Abnormal squeaking sounds.(iv) The type of cake being produced in quantity and

quality.

vr nAILY MAINTENANCE POINTS FOR OPERATINGTHE Et,(PELLER.

1.1 ENGINE:

DaiJy maintenance of the E'qJeller engine should be asstipulated in the suppliers operations andmaintenance manual.

(Read the engine-operating manual carefully beforeoperating this machine).

1.2 MOTOR:

(i) Check all nipples in the motor and grease them.(ii)Check the loosen screws, covers and other parts, fL'(

them.(tiOClear away the dusts, cakes and others from the

motor.

1.3 EXPELLER:

(i) Check all accessible nipples, lubricating the pointsproperly and the chains oil tray should be up tolevel.

(ii)Check the tension of the chain.

Page 8: Manual Sayari Oil Expeller

(ill)The accumulated cakes at the expeller outletshould be cleared frequently in order to keep theoutlet unblocked.

\lTT SAFETYRULESFOR OPERATION:(i) Operator should be thoroughly familiar

with controls of the machine.(ii) Every flywheel and every moving part of a

machine must be secured and protected bya safety cage

(Hi) Every part of the transmission andmachinery moving parts must be securelyprotected.

(iv) The operations room should be weBventilated and pro\-ided with securityappliances for fire fighting, first aid boxetc

(v) Do not allow any person surrounding themachine when running.

(vi) All working tools should be kept away whenstarting the machine and when in operation.

(vii) Lubricating oils should be kept away fromextraction room.

(viii) Operators should not wear loose clotheswhen operating the machine.

(ix) Operator should not attempt any repairwhen the machine is running.

(x) Operator should not be away from themachine when running.

(xi) Do not use metal pieces to push seeds intothe chamber.
