P&F Meeting follow up

The Bull and Barrel festival is coming up in October and the P&F are in need of helpers for parking and a sausage sizzle on the day. If you volunteered to assist at this event you will be contacted shortly.

The tickets for the Movie Night on Friday 3 November are selling fast.

A sausage sizzle fund-raiser will be held at Bunnings on Saturday 28 October.

The annual Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the Thomas Little Hall from 23-26 October.

After a period of research and consultation prior to a decision being made to order school socks, with stripes in the school colours, socks were ordered and are now available for purchase in the uniform shop. Please note that the

uniform shop is run by P&F volunteers and uniform items are as close to cost price as possible, including the socks. Very little profit is made on uniforms. The socks are being phased-in as part of our uniform, and are not compulsory until 2019. Please remember that all are welcome to attend our P&F meetings to be involved in discussions and decisions.

The canteen has been closed for some time due to needing more leaders. Please see the office if you are interested in being a canteen leader for Term 4.

School Board

The School Board is beginning to investigate improved toilet facilities for our students. This will likely be a two-year process.

The Board is facilitating a committee to prepare for 25th anniversary celebrations next year, please let the office know if you can assist.

We continue to support the Nature Play project and are investigating ways to complete the next stage.

If you have ever considered being on the School Board, please give it some thought as several members have their youngest children in Year 6 this year and will be leaving the school community at the end of the year. Nominations will be sought in November.

Faction Shirts After naming our factions in honour of significant people in our school’s history, we have sourced faction shirts at a low price to help develop faction identity and team spirit. They are collared shirts with the school logo. Thank you to those who have or-dered shirts. Although not a compulsory part of the uniform this year, they will become part of the uniform from next year. We are planning our first ‘Faction Day’ for the last day of this term, Friday 22 September, where students can wear their shirts, have lunch in faction groups with some fun activities at lunch time. Playground before school For duty of care and safety reasons, students are not permitted to play in the Early Childhood playground before and after school. Please take your children directly to class once the doors are open at 8.30am. Swimming Lessons Swimming lessons commenced yesterday. Buses for the first groups leave promptly in the morning. Parents are welcome to come and watch their children during the lessons. Lesson times are: Years 3 and 5 9.15-10.00am Years 2 and 4 10.00-10.45am Years 1, 6 and PP 10.45-11.30am Shop Orders Please be mindful of the healthy eating principles that we teach our students at school when ordering lunch from the shop. Please do not order fizzy drinks (in glass bottles), hot chips or chocolates and other lollies. Save these treat foods for after school hours or weekends. They are not conducive to good concentration for learning in the afternoons. Thank you for your cooperation. Confirmation Preparation is continuing for our students, who participated in a parent/child workshop last week and were visited by the Bishop last Friday. Reception of the Sacrament will be on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September. Please pray for our students. Wishing all our Dads, Grandfathers and fathering figures in our community a wonderful Father’s Day. May God bless you Mrs Angela Hegney Principal

Gospel Reading

Matthew 16:21-27

Jesus speaks of his Passion and rebukes Peter for his objection.

Peter was expecting a Messiah who would carry out a different plan than the one Jesus had explained. Jesus

was indeed the Messiah, but his life and death would show a different understanding of what it means to be

the Messiah. We too have expectations of God and our own ideas about what we think God ought to be

doing in our world. Like Peter we may risk limiting our image of God by thinking only in human ways.

God’s plan is always more than we can ever imagine.

As you gather as a family, talk about what we expect God to be doing in our world and in our family life. Then read today’s Gospel, Matthew 16:21-27. Why do you think Peter was so upset by what Jesus was saying? Notice how Jesus reprimands Peter. Do we sometimes forget to let God be God for us? That is, do we sometimes get discouraged because God doesn’t act in our world in the ways that we expect?

Making Jesus Real

Use the Big “T” Word- Thanks

(10 times a day)

The word “thanks” is a small word that seems to be

forgotten in so many cases. We all like to be thanked for

the small things we do for others.

Students: When was the last time I thanked mum or dad

for cooking my meals? When did I last thank mum or

dad for driving me to school, sport, dancing?

The small things in life are probably more important

than the big things. How do you feel when people praise

you, smile at you?

CLASS NEWS

Pre Primary Our first swimming lessons have been very successful. We have been very proud of how well the Pre primary students have organised themselves, travelled on the bus quietly, and their behaviour and listening skills at the pool. The next two weeks will be tiring but the class is looking forward with excitement to the new skills they will be learning during their lessons. Last week the class worked in small groups to make a poster of the phases of the moon. It was impressive to watch each group problem solve and listen to each group members ideas. The end results were amazing!

Year Four In Maths we have been busy learning about area and perimeter. We have created our own house plans and are completing an area investigation. In English we started a unit on advertising, looking at how TV advertisements use techniques to persuade viewers. We are nearly ready to plan and film our own commercials ready for Open Morning. In Technology and Design we constructed playground designs and it was great to see students imagination come to life.

Last week the Year One and Two classes attended an excursion to the Wellington Forest Discovery Centre. The class went on a bush walk called ‘Busy in the Forest'. Our very entertaining guide, Julz, took us on a treasure hunt. We had to look for clues in the forest to find out where different types of animals lived. Each group had to find an animal silhouette, using a rhyme about the animal and a clue to find the next one. After lunch, we went on a sensory walk through the forest. We were blindfolded and had to use our other senses to make it to the end of the sensory trail. In our writing sessions, we are going to pick a native animal to research and write our first report. We are looking forward to starting swimming this week as well as starting our practice for our Year One assembly. In Year Three, we have been

learning to do addition with trading. In Religion, we have been discussing emotions and how they lead us to do certain actions. We learned how to draw minions in Art and we have been enjoying our swimming lessons so far.

The Year 2's have had such an exciting fortnight. We had so much fun performing our assembly item of 'Wombat Stew'. Some of us were a little bit nervous and some were super excited, but we all performed exceptionally well! We have also been on an excursion to the Wellington Discovery Forest. We loved the blindfolded walk and also finding the golden honkey nuts. We learned so much about the Australian bush and would love to go again.

Kindy

This week we are talking about Dads. We are reading stories, sharing experiences and drawing pictures, We are also working on a little surprise for our special Dads. We would like to wish all Dads a Happy Fathers Day and send them our love this weekend.

Year Six In Maths we have been learning algebra and patterns. In Religious Education we have been preparing for our Confirmation next weekend. We had a visit from Bishop Holohan and really enjoyed the Parent/Child workshop with Fr Wayne. In English we have been studying poetry, writing limericks, haiku and cinquains. Here is a limerick the class wrote:

There was an old lady from Rome Who could never find her way home

She would walk down the street Getting very sore feet

That silly old lady from Rome

In Year 5, we have been learning about different types of poetry. Last week we had a go at writing ballads, which were harder than we thought - how did Banjo Patterson do it so easily? We wrote ballads about a trip to the dentist - they were very interesting! Last week, Anita Finneran, from Caritas, came to our class to teach us all about what Caritas is doing for the people affected by the crisis in East Africa. She was very impressed with all our work that we have done so far and she even brought her guitar and sang with us. The whole class really enjoyed her visit.

Important information regarding your child’s CDF Student Passbook Accounts Today’s students live in a high-tech world. Coins, notes & paper passbook accounts have become ‘tap & go’ and App based mobile payments. Alongside this rapid technological change the Catholic Development Fund is facing a more rigorous Government regulatory environment. Joining with other CDF’s across Australia in a new CDF Community Fund they are committed to continuing to provide savings offerings for students. They are now offering students a 31 Day Mission Student Saver Account. This new wholly online savings account is for pre-school, primary and secondary school students. Students can earn bonus interest for regular savings (currently up to a total amount possible of 2.35% p.a). They can also feel really good that their money, pooled with the money of other students, is being used to support the growth of the Church by building new schools, parishes, hospitals and aged care facilities. The CDF are asking for your support to transition your child now to the new 31 Day Mission Saver. Go to www.cdfcommunityfund.org.au/students and fill out the form (tick ‘existing student’). Please note an adult will need to be the ‘authoriser’ on the account and will need to fill out the application form and upload “ID” as part of the process due to changes in Government regulations. The traditional CDF School passbook savings accounts will be discontinued at the end of Term 3 on 22 September, 2017. CDF will be contact all account holders regarding a process of transitioning to the new 31 Day Mission Saver account. Any questions please contact CDF on Tel: 1800 016 702 or visit www.cdfcommunityfund.org.au

COMING SOON… A NEW ‘CASH-FREE’ WAY TO PAY AT OUR LADY OF LOURDES

We appreciate the frustration of needing money in the form of coins and notes to pay for your

child’s uniform items. A ‘cash only’ economy isn't how we operate in our day-to-day lives and from

now on we want to make it easy for you to pay for key school activities via a cashless solution.

From Term 4 we will be moving to CDFpay Cash-free Solution for our uniform shop (and canteen

when it is operating again). This product is an online platform offering from the Catholic

Development Fund Melbourne (CDF).

We are encouraging all parents to use the solution. Please be assured that we will not be turning

away those students that choose to pay via cash, however to ensure the success of the cash-free

solution and to drive the full benefits of the program we encourage your participation.

The Benefits of the School going cash-free with CDFpay are:

Greater security: reducing the amount carried by our students, it is safer for everyone and means you don’t have to be

concerned about your child losing money or change from their bags and pockets.

Faster & easier: Now you can make your purchases from any smartphone or computer. We can take payments via credit

card or bank transfer over the internet. Stored credit cards make the process of ordering lunch faster and easier than ever.

Reduced administration: Counting and handling cash is costly for the school and this is another way we’re working to

eliminate unnecessary costs so we can better use funds for other student activities.

Anytime, Any Device: You can order and pay for lunches (including choosing dietary needs & handling of allergy

requirements) from your computer, laptop or mobile device.

You have control: You can access your account to place an order at your convenience – 24x7. It’s easy to use and lets you

generate statements and set dietary controls for students.

More information will be provided on how to download, install, set up and use the app as we approach our launch day. If you

have any questions or concerns please speak to either Leanne or Clair in the office.
