ABSECON LIGHT May/June 2014 1 As we embark on another year of AIPS, I want to take some time to reflect on the past. This year USPS celebrates 100 years and in 2015 AIPS will celebrate 75 years. While I have not been around for all of those years, I have been around for over 50 of them. Memories of trips to Brigantine, Beach Haven Sweetwater, Atlantic City and the Chesapeake along with canoe trips, Gravelly Run bonfires, and clam bakes and my younger brother meeting the love of his life in Sweetwater are things that bring a smile to my face. AIPS has hosted many successful district events even those where the members from down “south” were afraid of the little Atlantic Ocean. AIPS is a big part of my life. Through this organization I have made many long-lasting friendships that have continued through generations. My parents, Allan & Bette, included their children in their many adventurous trips. Through these trips I have seen and done many things a lot of people will never experience. AIPS, District 5 and USPS have taught me that fellowship though boating is a lifetime and wonderful experience. I would not trade it for anything. I want to thank each and every USPS member who has made the last 50 years with AIPS memorable, especially my family and my mom and dad. Without them I would not have been able to be part of the great organization. Upcoming Events/Birthdays ......... Page 2 Administrative Officer Report ........ Last year we had a banner year with increased partici-pation in the social events of our squadron and we hope to keep building on this in 2014. In the planning stage is a raft-up at the bulkhead, our annual Great Egg Harbor River clean-up, the GWIE Dinner, a Holiday Dinner, Founders Day, and topped off with our Change of Watch. Be on the lookout for the dates for all of these.

Last year we had a great attendance at the raft-up at the Bulkhead with Dave and Nancy Bernard doing a great job of planning and cooking on the raft provided by Keith Boakes. The Great Egg Harbor River Clean-up was another success with our group gathering about 20 bags of trash, we would have gotten more ex-cept out kayaks and canoes were sinking. It was finished off with a crab feast at Keith’s house; what a great time and an opportunity to help with our environment. It was especially necessary after Hurricane Sandy, but as we have found, it is almost as necessary because thoughtless people throw trash and other items in the water. The GWIE dinner in October is always fun and it is neat to poke fun at each other in recognizing our “goofs” while we are boating or any other time. It is all in good fun so I hope everyone will turn out for that.

Our last events will be announced at later time but please keep them in

mind as our Squadron is for you!!

Executive Report - Lt/C David Bernard, AP

As we start off our year with the new bridge, we hope that you all will take part in the activities and education that our squadron has to offer.

Recently there was a workshop in Norfolk Va. on coopera-tive charting. It was held at the Atlantic Marine Center at

NOAA head quarters. This is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community by learning to update nautical charts, light lists, coast pilot and other publications relevant to boating navigation. It’s also a good way to meet new friends from other squadrons in our district. I was the chair for 3 years in a row. I handed over the reins to Bob Beltz and his committee to organize, schedule all the seminars and dinners. This is the first year in about 25 years that I have not attended the workshop. This was due to the marriage of our oldest daughter Ashle, (by 1 minute) to her new husband Jared Cocca. We took our two 1969 Chris Craft boats to the venue in Forked River. Our many years of boating experience and Power Squadron education navigated us thru a very narrow ICW at a very low tide in stiff winds. What a great time we all had. Congratulations to Ashle and Jared and many years of happiness.

Hope you will all join us in our summer of events and education.

Educational Officer Lt/C Ashle Cocca, P

Greetings AIPS Members! Happy Spring and the beaut i fu l weather it is finally bringing! As we start uncovering and prepping the

boats for the summer season, we graduat-ed another 12 students from our last Amer-ica's Boating Course on March 19th. The students ranged from 10-45 years old. We are so happy so share our love of boating with other members of the community, and making our waters that much safer. We are expecting to hold another class in June in the Mays Landing area. If you know of anyone interested, please have them email me at [email protected] or call me at (609) 412-3524. Educationally yours, Ashle Cocca Squadron Educational Officer

Check out the Facebook page for Absecon Island. Take a stroll down memory lane. Photos from years past have been posted be-ginning in the 70s. If anyone has any old photos you

would like to lend me, I will scan them and put them on the Facebook page also. If you have not already visited this page, this is the time to do so. Take a look and like the page. District 5 also has a Facebook page filled with photos from all district and national events. There are also photos from squadron events throughout the district. You can also follow AIPS & District 5 on twitter!

AIPS SAFETY FIRST

What Causes a Fall Overboard

By: Simon Wright

It's important to be mindful at all times about the power of the sea and the ever-present danger that it and other large bodies of water pose. A fall overboard, at best, will leave you drenched and feeling extremely foolish but, at

worst, it could lead to loss of life. Adults and boat skippers, in particular, need to be vigilant about children who

are under their supervision and should also always set a good example by wearing a life jacket and observing sen-sible safety protocols. It's important also to be aware of the things that typically cause a fall overboard.

Rough seas and unusually large waves

Clearly, the risk of a boating accident greatly increases if the weather worsens and leads to rough seas. Boats

should not set out if the weather represents a danger and boat skippers should always check weather forecasts in advance to gauge whether conditions are expected to become dangerous. Conditions can deteriorate very quickly

whilst at sea, so always keep an eye out for changing weather patterns and be ready to return to port. When con-ditions are rough, it's vital to ensure that all passengers (especially kids) are either in the cabin or are seated se-

curely. Another risk is a rogue unusually large wave and especial care must be taken if passing a large boat that

may deliver a large wake.

Boat collisions Any sudden unexpected bump whilst on the water can be very dangerous, causing people to lose their footing or

causing the boat to list dangerously. Collisions can be with another vessel so boat captains must be wary in busy waters. The protocol with approaching boat is to pass them on the starboard side. Additionally, collisions may be

with static objects, such as rocks, sandbars or jetties. Any danger markers should always be heeded and caution

should be exercised if close to shore.

Fishing and other distractions People go out in boats because it's fun, but in the moments when we are having the most fun, there is a danger

that we could let our guard down and end up in the water. An extremely tragic example of how badly things can

go wrong is illustrated by the death of one adult and three small children in Scotland in 2012. Two adults had tak-en their children on a canoe trip and were fishing from the canoe. Whilst in the process of landing a flurry of

caught fish, the canoe capsized. One of the adults and one child survived but it was an extreme price to pay for what was supposed to be a fun outing.

Incorrect footwear and careless boat behavior

There are times when people bring disaster upon themselves through foolishness or lack of thought. Messing

around on boats, especially if alcohol is involved, is completely unacceptable and puts people's lives at risk. Anoth-er factor that often contributes to falls overboard is wearing inappropriate footwear. For example, there may be

occasions when it is valid to climb up to the prow of the boat. This can be accomplished safely if water conditions are benign and if care is taken. However, wearing shoes that have little grip on a surface that is wet may lead to a

fall and, if in doubt, it's best to avoid any behavior that may be risky.

Attention Members:

Please check and edit as needed your personal contact information in the national database by February 1, 2014. Printed rosters will be gener-ated this spring for many squadrons, district and national. It is up to each member to check their own record to verify their email address, their mailing address, cell phone, home phone, boat name, etc are up-to-date. National requires all Squadrons to submit their OD-2 forms and districts to submit their OD-1 forms by February 1. This is a personnel list and your address information will be pulled from the database to print the national roster. With the annual meeting and cruise only two weeks away, please get them in now. Once anything is printed, it is too late for an entire year. You can check your information by following the steps be-low to access the national website, or you can contact your squadron secretary or roster chair. Go to www.usps.org.
