Applesauce:

2nd/ 3rd grade Book Club really en joyed learn ing all about apples in Novem ber. They read apple (and som e pum pkin) books to each other, w rote apple poem s, found facts about apples in books, and answ ered som e questions they had about apples.  The day before Thanksgiving Break they f in ished up their apple fun by m aking som e tasty hom em ade applesauce!

The students had the chance to bring in their favorite apples to include in the applesauce. We peeled, sliced, and cored them w ith the apple peeler and then cooked them in the crock pot w ith cinnam on and w ater.  Everyone also had the opportun ity to try an old fashioned sieve cone and m asher to m ash the apples in to applesauce.

Dear Parent s and Families,

It seems like without fail, that every year, elementary schools everywhere deal with exposure to head lice.  Please remember, that lice carry NO illness, and they cause NO disease. A few words on the subject and a few proactive suggestions might help us all as a school community minimize future potential outbreaks.

We strongly suggest that you check through your child?s hair frequently during the winter months.  We will of course encourage all children to avoid sharing any personal items such as hats, coats, scarves, barrettes, and hair ties, and hope that you can also do the same at home. When planning a sleep over, please consider sending your child with his or her own sleeping bag and own pillow. If you wish to send in a large bag to school for your child to keep on his/her hook to secure wear such as jackets, hats, etc please feel free to do so.

FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT LICE:

1. Lice are small grayish-to-brown, wingless bugs about the size of an ant or sesame seed. Head lice are found on, and feed off the head.

2. Lice can live approximately 2 days off the body.  They cannot hop, they cannot fly.3. Lice lay tiny oval, tan nits (eggs).  Head lice attach the eggs to hair strands with a very sticky substance and

they are difficult to remove from the hair strand. 4. Lice and nits cannot be removed with regular shampoo and hair washing, and will not come out with routine

combing or brushing. Lice must be treated with medicated shampoo.5. Lice are transmitted from one person to another through close direct contact, or sharing combs, brushes,

coats, hats, and scarves.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU DISCOVER LICE OR THEIR EGGS:

1. Please contact your doctor for the suggested medicated treatment. Please follow the instructions thoroughly. (Some treatments are to be applied to dry hair, and some need to be applied to wet hair).

2. Please contact the school nurse if you think your child has lice, so that additional precautions can be taken. 3. Be proactive at managing lice in your home by:

- inspecting all members of the family routinely for 3-4 weeks.- proceeding with treatment if other family members are found to have lice.- washing and changing linens and the child?s clothing daily. Wash items in HOT water, and then place

items in the dryer on HOT setting for one hour. Follow this measure for anything that comes in contact with your child?s head.  For any stuffed animal or clothing which may be ruined by a hot wash and dryer for an hour, you may place these items in a plastic bag and seal it for 3 weeks.

- sterilizing combs and brushes in boiling water.- vacuuming furniture-front and back.  Vacuum mattress seams, and the area around the child?s bed.    - Also remember to vacuum the car seats and upholstery.

PRECAUTIONS WE ARE TAKING AT SCHOOL:

1. Our staff has been alerted to remind students to not share personal items such as hats and coats.2. School personnel regularly communicates with the Director of Facilities on the occurrence of lice outbreaks in

the school and areas that may require additional cleaning.3. Custodial staff work extra diligently in all areas during times of concern to ensure proper and thorough

cleaning is taking place.

Thank you for taking the time to read through this important material. Your assistance and understanding are always appreciated.
