Dear Mapleview Families.
Though it is only early December, I feel it necessary to extend Christmas greetings to
you. We just hosted a fabulous winter vocal concert and the holiday break is just over
2 weeks away. I hope that this season brings you joy and peace.
Please join me in celebrating with the Mapleview community our 2018-2019 school
report card on the next page of this newsletter. Due to the hard work of our staff
and students, Mapleview Intermediate School was recognized with another year of
growth and a score of Significantly Exceeding Expectations. Again, this score is
achieved through the hard work of staff and students and parent support. Thank you
for making Mapleview a high achieving school.
I am very proud of the way our staff and students have maintained their focus on
learning over the past few weeks. Students continue to be challenged in the classroom
and focused on problem solving and strategy utilization. We are asking them to un-
derstand the learning focus, their current state in regards to that focus, and their plan
to achieve that goal or focus. This process continues each day as students face new
and unique problems and work to solve them using the strategies they have been
taught, with the support of their teacher. I continue to be excited at the student
growth I am seeing.
Thank you for your extra care and caution at morning drop off and afternoon pick up
around the school. With the icy roads and sidewalks, we all appreciate keeping safety
a number one priority.
Again, Christmas is less than three weeks away, may this time bring peace and joy to
you and your family.
Sincerely,
Jason Nate

School Report Cards Released
As part of its assessment and accountability system, the Wisconsin Department of Public
Instruction creates a School Report Card for every publicly funded school in the state. The
Report Cards are intended to help all schools and districts utilize data related to student
achievement to monitor their performance and target their improvement efforts. On its Report
Card, a school receives a score on a scale of 0 to 100 and one of five ratings based on that
score. The ratings range from Fails to Meet Expectations to Significantly Exceeds Expectations. The
school’s score and rating are primarily based on the school’s performance on statewide
assessments in the 2018-19 school year.
Mapleview Intermediates’ Report Card score was 89.7 and this gave the school a rating
of Significantly Exceeding Expectations. You can access Mapleview Intermediate’s
Report Card along with those for all of the district’s schools and a District Report Card
on the DPI’s website: http://dpi.wi.gov/accountability/report-cards
Report Card scores as well as other district performance reports can also be accessed from
the Kimberly Area School District’s website:
http://www.kimberly.k12.wi.us/departments/about/performance-reports
On the actual Report Card, parents can review the specific student performance information
that is used to calculate the school’s overall score. Keep in mind that these Report Cards are
just one source of information about our school. Our staff will use the data from our Report
Card as part of our continuous improvement efforts during the current school year. If you have
questions about the Report Card feel free to contact me.
Holiday Board Winners 2018

Mr. Calmes would like to thank the fol-
lowing 6th grade students: Hannah Half-
mann, Emma Reybrock, and Cara Sauter.
They put in many hours of hard work
during their recess. The board looks
wonderful! The decorated board is dis-
played at Memorial Park (located across
the street from Mapleview). You can also
stop by anytime during the holidays to
see the great job they have done.
It is inevitable that snow will
come so, please continue to
be on your toes when drop-
ping off and picking up your
child. The roads and parking
lots will get narrower and visi-
bility will decrease. When
dropping off on Maple Street,
please drop on the school side
of the street. When dropping
off in front of the school of-
fice, please remain in line and
have your child exit the vehi-
cle as soon as your vehicle
reaches the sidewalk. We can
unload five to six at a time
which will make drop-off fast-
er. There is a crosswalk in
front of the office doors, so
please stay in line and don’t
pass. Thank you for keeping
the safety of our students a
number one priority.
Winter Safety Thank you for
keeping the
safety of our
students a
number one
priority.
Winter Choir Concert Way to go choir members for all of the hard work that has gone into our songs
for the December 3rd concert! We will be wrapping up 2019 with a choir party
on December 5th from 3:00-3:45! After that, there will be no more after
school practices for Winter Choir. Look for information about the District
Choral Festival in January!

Intramurals
M A P L E V I E W I N T E R M E D I A T E
We’ve worked hard and had a lot of fun in all of our intramurals this fall. Most recently,
our girls volleyball teams and the boys and girls wrestling team completed their seasons
with some friendly competition between the Bobcats and the Woodland Wolves.
Our after school choir members ended their fall practice last week and had a wonderful
performance at our Holiday concert Tuesday.
Watch for basketball sign up sheets to come home on December 12 for girls on Mondays/
Wednesday and boys Tuesdays/Thursdays in the months of January and February. Battle
of the Books will also begin meeting in January on Tuesdays, though the book list was giv-
en to students in September.
Boys volleyball, chess & cribbage club and 6th grade art club will be offered later in the
winter months. We enjoy getting our students involved in extracurricular activities that
encourage interacting with others, learning new skills and having fun!
Thank you to all parents for your commitment as well. Picking up your child after practice
takes valuable time. We appreciate it.
Thank you,
Mrs. Jochimsen
Emergency Medication Please be aware that emergency medications that are provided for use during
the school day will not be accessible after school hours. Parents and students
plan ahead to have emergency medication available during after school activi-
ties such as clubs and sports. If an emergency arises and a student does not
have their emergency medication available, 911 will be called.

Last week, the Mapleview Student Council sponsored a food drive to help out people in our com-munity who do not have enough to eat this Holiday season and throughout the year. Students helped out by bringing in non-perishable food items that were donated to St. Joseph’s Food Pantry in Menasha.
For some added incentive, the teachers in school took pictures of their own “Turkey Legs” and the students tried to guess which legs belonged to which teacher. They then placed the donations by the picture of the teacher they wanted to see dressed as a turkey! This year’s “winner” was Mrs. Hanes. Her reward? Dress up as a turkey and strut up and down the halls while the students cheered her on in approval.

School Attendance
A reminder to parents
that all attendance must go
through the Main Office in
advance. Please send a
note with your child, call
the office at 788-7910 to
speak to a secretary, or
leave a message on our
attendance line. The office
will then update your stu-
dent’s attendance in Infi-
nite Campus. You may in-
form teachers if you so
choose, however, the Main
Office should be the initial
contact to avoid any unex-
cused absences. You are
able to leave a message at
any time outside of our
normal office hours (3:15
PM-7:00 AM).
Wisconsin’s school com-
pulsory law requires stu-
dents miss no more than
ten (10) days per school
year. Once a student has
missed ten or more days
of school a doctor’s note
may be required to excuse
the absence. Students who
visit the doctor due to an
extended illness in advance
of the ten days are also
encouraged to send a doc-
tor’s note to the Main Of-
fice excusing the ab-
sence. Absences excused
by a medical professional
generally do not count to-
ward a student’s ten day
maximum. If you have
questions regarding our
attendance policy or a
unique circumstance,
please contact Valerie
Schroeder, the Mapleview
Intermediate attendance
secretary.

“POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS”
Ho Ho Ho! In the weeks leading up to Winter break students who make great choices, follow expectations and are respectful to those around them, might find a Santa hat hanging over the back of their chair in the morning and a candy cane to enjoy!
Each day, 2 students will be chosen from each homeroom. By recog-nizing the students who show appropriate behaviors, the staff is rewarding positive behavior with a fun incentive!
As always if you have any questions, comments or concerns about PBIS please feel free to contact your child’s teacher, Mrs. Jochimsen or Mr. Nate. On behalf of Mapleview’s staff, we thank you for all of your efforts to reinforce our community values and expectations outside of our school day.
Congratulations to all of those students for following the Bobcat ex-pectations throughout the month of November…Keep up the great work in December!

A Message From the Nurse
Is It a Cold or the Flu?
A reminder that prescription
and non-prescription medi-
cations must be brought to
the school office by the stu-
dent’s parent. All medica-
tions must be in the original
container, and clearly labeled
with the student’s name. Stu-
dents may not carry their
own medications at school
(exception: an emergency
medication that a physician
and parent have authorized a
student to carry, such as an
inhaler or Epipen). A Medica-
tion Consent form must be
on file with the school office
before any medication can be
given; a physician’s signature
is required for prescription
medications. The Medication

Every year, KASD libraries go through a process
of weeding books. Like weeding a garden, library
weeding involves removing materials that are
blocking the use and the growth of the library.
Weeded titles are usually in poor condition, dupli-
cates, out of date, not meeting the needs of the
school, or simply not being read. It never means
that the library doesn’t value that title or author,
as often times, weeded titles are replaced with
newer editions or more popular options. By weeding the library, we enable students to
more easily find the books they need and want, and we find areas where we can im-
prove sections of the library’s collection.
As always, Mapleview’s school library will be weeded this school year. Weeded materi-
als are first offered to teachers for their classroom collections, but then we will allow
students to take home materials as well. These materials will say “discard” on them and
will have library labels removed or blacked out. Students are encouraged to keep these
at home and include them in their personal libraries.
Thank you for supporting the Mapleview’s Library!

We are encouraging school and community members to become the eyes and ears of the Kimberly Area School District in order to provide information that keeps our students, staff and schools safe.
It sometimes can be difficult to define:• Take your time to pay attention to your
surroundings and to the behaviors of others around you.
• Know what suspicious or concerning behaviors look like.
• Does the activity look strange to you?• Are you worried someone you know is thinking about hurting others or themselves?
Report it, don’t just repeat it.
