The Annual Elder Quest 2015 Spring Seminar Scholarship Drive
“Dreams Really Do Come True”
____________
Give a hungry man a fish and he’ll eat a good meal.
Teach him to fish and he’ll eat the rest of his life
and feed his family.
That’s what Elder Quest does with our scholarship program. We help non-traditional students going to UVU in the quest to gain a career to support themselves and their families.
The Elder Quest Spring Seminar is our traditional time to
raise the funds needed for the Elder Quest scholarship program. Every penny donated goes into the fund and none of the donations goes into administration or any other costs.
This scholarship helps to lighten their load by paying half of an academic year’s tuition and fees at UVU, while the responsibility for housing, school books and supplies is theirs.
To hear what this scholarship means to these deserving
students is phenomenal. It gives them hope and at times helps them to stay in school and finish their degree.

EQ SCHOLARSHIPS Continued from page 1
Most of the recipients already work at one or two
jobs besides going to school full-time. Some volunteer with organizations at UVU that correspond with their career choice giving them needed experience.
Many have had situations occur beyond their control
that require them to start over with a new career; and
some have medical bills and children to support. These are
hardship cases that require an education to move forward
to a better life, support their families and in the end,
contribute to our community.
These students are hardworking, carefully chosen
and well deserving of the Elder Quest scholarship. This
past year, this program helped seven wonderful men and
women.
Tickets will be sold by the Elder Quest Board
members and will be $20 each -- a good price for the time
well spent. Bring a friend, buy a “table.” Tickets MUST be
purchased in advance.
Please give generously. The $20 admission charge
just covers our expenses for the seminar, so bring your
check book and plan to give $10. $50, $100, or whatever you
can spare for a great cause

President’s Letter March 2015 My big shout out of THANKS to everyone who helped make
2014-2015 UVU Elder Quest such a wonderful success. To the
dedicated Board of Directors who completed every task with little
direction from me. To the one hundred new members who joined
our ranks this year, with special thanks to Kay Bradford and her
outstanding recruitment team. Heart-felt thanks to our talented and
dedicated teachers and potpourri lecturers who have educated and
entertained us with amazing classes. To the UVU Culinary Arts staff and students who have
spoiled us with beyond-delicious gourmet masterpieces at every luncheon. And to our travel
gurus -- both for day trips and planned extended travel -- who have kept us (and plan to keep us)
on our toes and away from the TV to see the world first hand. It has truly been an outstanding
year.
But, the year isn’t over quite yet, and maybe the best is still ahead: The Spring Seminar
a/k/a UVU Elder Quest Fund-Raising Event, coming up on April 8, promises to be another
outstanding day. V.P. Fran Reiser and her committee are working very hard to surpass last year’s
seminar which netted $10,000 from our members to provide seven scholarships to non-
traditional students at UVU.
With the theme of Dreams Really Do Come True, we will hear from several scholarship
winners from past years to share how our scholarships have helped their dreams come true. We
are also pleased to announce our special guest speakers -- the lovely and talented philanthropist
Barbara Barrington Jones in the morning and Jay Newitt who is documenting the story of
reconstruction of the Provo City Center Temple in the afternoon.
In both sessions we are delighted to have music provided by the acclaimed song
writing/performing couple, Roger and Melanie Hoffman. You must have tickets in advance, so
buy your tickets now from any Board Member. Just $20 for a wonderful day, including lunch
provided by none other than the UVU Culinary Arts Institute. You will not want to miss it.
Looking ahead to summer -- please mark Wednesday, July 29 on your calendar. You will
be receiving an invitation in the mail, so watch for more details about a swinging Summer Party
with a western theme.
For those of us who can’t wait to see each other until September, we will be meeting the
first Monday of each month -- June 1, July 6 and August 3, at the UVU Culinary Arts Lunch Room
for informal gatherings at 1:00 p.m.
Love and thanks to you all,
Sincerely,

“Working to make dreams come true”
From Tabernacle to Temple:
Principles learned while re-purposing
a historic, fire destroyed, tabernacle
Elder Jay Newitt is serving with his wife Sylvia as full-time
construction service missionaries at the Provo City Center
Temple. Their job is to assist in making sure the project meets plans
and specifications and to write a comprehensive history of the
construction.
Jay recently retired as a Professor of Construction Management
at BYU after teaching there for 37 years. Elder Newitt has a PhD, many
publications, and has written a text book which has been adopted by
construction management programs at universities across the nation.
Sister Sylvia Newitt has a BS degree from BYU and owned and
operated a preschool in Spanish Fork at the First Class Learning
Center. Elder and Sister Newitt are the parents of six children and
grandparents to 17 grandchildren.

Barbara Barrington Jones
Barbara was a professional classical ballet dancer, and
danced in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Montreal. She
was a demi-soloist with the Atlanta Ballet Company, and a soloist
and the assistant artistic director of the ballet company at the
University of Texas.
Recently, Barbara has formed a wonderful association with Utah's Ballet West. In fact, she just
performed as the Queen in Ballet West's Sleeping Beauty. Her foundation also supports the I CAN DO
program, which gives children the opportunity to experience dance first-hand.
In 2013, Barbara continued her support of women by donating a major gift for the expansion of
UVU's Wee Care Center, which provides reliable childcare for UVU students with children. In January 2014
she established the Barbara Barrington Jones Professorship in Ballroom Dance, the first Professorship to be
established in the UVU School of the Arts. Utah Valley University recently awarded Barbara Barrington
Jones with an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts and Humanities.
Barbara has also donated to the construction of the Museum of Natural Curiosity and the Ballet West
Academy at Thanksgiving Point. Last year Barbara was named Woman Making a Difference by the Utah
Valley Chamber of Commerce, and was just honored with the Utah Philanthropic Leadership Award of 2014.
Spring Seminar Speaker 2015
Perhaps this inspiring mantra best sums up how she lives her life:
"Life is not just getting through the
storms, it's learning to dance in the rain."
Barbara B. Jones, Seminar Speaker

A note for you
from our Membership Chair
Kay Bradford
One of the great things we enjoy is the
friendships we make in Elder Quest.
When we count our many blessings,
It isn’t hard to see
That life’s most valued treasures
Are the treasures that are free.
For it isn’t what we own or buy
that signifies our wealth,
It’s the special gifts that have no price;
Our family, friends and health.
Invite your friends to be part of this
fabulous organization and don’t miss
out on our Spring Seminar, April 8th.
We enjoy the benefits of Elder Quest -- the classes and friendships for the small price
of $40 a year; plus extended learning opportunities at our luncheons and various trips. Let’s
remember the benefits we enjoy by sharing our blessings with others through this scholarship
fund raiser.
See You At the Spring Seminar!
