“Do you have a Goal? So what is your plan?”

When planning my family trip to America a few years ago, I had a very clear goal. In actual fact, we all had a few goals that we wanted to achieve when visiting the USA, which coincided with the places we wanted to see. I remember writing these down with my family and eventually, we started to plan. I am convinced that the reason our five week family trip was so enjoyable, successful and a wonderful learning adventure was because we had taken the time to write down our goals and carefully construct a very good plan.

There is now a lot of educational evidence that suggests highly successful students routinely set achievable academic goals. A high school education and the planning for gaining and retaining knowledge and learning is no different from the planning we do in our lives when we want to achieve something.

“Goals and planning are an important part of life and should also be an important part of every student’s

education at Marcellin College”

When driving to a place we have never been before, we plan our route (even with the help of our GPS) to achieve our goal of reaching our destination. Teachers at Marcellin meet and plan together every Monday afternoon, as well as on their own, in order to reach their goals. Goals and planning are an important part of life and should also be an important part of every student’s education at Marcellin College.

There is a saying “goals not written down are just wishes”. To turn these wishes into a reality, all students at Marcellin must set their goals, write them down and plan or map the ways in which they will be achieved. American author and educator Dorit Sasson states, “The process of setting goals allows students to choose where they want to go in school and what they want to achieve. By knowing what they want to achieve, they know what they have to concentrate on and improve. Goal setting gives students long-term vision and short-term motivation. Having sharp, clearly defined goals,

which students can measure, will allow them to take pride in accomplishing those goals. They can see clear forward progress in what might have seemed a long drawn out process.”

Students at Marcellin should have a SMART goal (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely) for every subject and develop a good plan in achieving these goals. What is also important is that students have help with this. Parents can play a huge part in helping their sons begin this important process. Teachers are the next step in seeking advice about goals, and in turn will help students set other goals. The planning is something that can change along the way but if you don’t have a plan then you will have no direction.

A 26-year old photography student reflected on his difficulties in bringing to life his dream to be an international photographer; “Since I was about 12 I dreamed about travelling the world taking photos. But it just seemed too difficult. I didn’t know where to start. One day I sat down and wrote out a two-year plan to achieve my dream. I’m halfway through those two years – and at TAFE studying photography. It feels great to be making progress.”

Can I ask parents sit your sons down and ask the questions, “Do you have a Goal? What is your plan?” If they don’t have a goal, then please help them to get started and monitor their progress. Make sure that their goals are realistic and not set

From the Director of Teaching & M-Learning

As a result of Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) funding, the College has appointed Ms Maryanne Tanner in a non teaching role to work closely with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island students. We currently have twenty-seven ATSI students who will be working with Ms Tanner in formulating Learning Plans, as well as supporting both SCS and community programs designed to both foster and enrich contacts with community groups.

Please note that Assessment Schedules for all Year Groups are available on both the College Website http://www.marcellin.nsw.edu.au/2016 and on the Students’ M-Learning Year Group page.

too high. Make sure that they do not have too many goals so that their goals can be achievable and ensure that all of their goals are very specific in nature. Following a plan in achieving their goals will give your sons direction, self-confidence and sense of achievement, which is so important in educational success.

In the busyness of life, with all its distractions, as well as anxiety and self-doubt, applying the basic strategies of establishing realistic goals, prioritising tasks, and setting achievable time frames can be very useful in getting you back on track.I wish everyone a great year ahead, in partnership with each other.

Open Day

On Wednesday 24 February, Marcellin College opened its gates and welcomed prospective students and their families from the local community to our annual Open Day. From 3.00 – 6.00pm, almost one thousand visitors were able to experience what secondary Catholic education is like at MCR.

Our Year 7 students were wonderful ambassadors of the College and made excellent Tour Guides throughout the afternoon. They were a wealth of knowledge and were extremely proud to be able to escort our visitors around our wonderful College. The tour, which started in the Fouviere Prayer room and concluded in the main yard at the sausage sizzle, took in many diverse learning areas that were full of activity and highlighted the variety of learning spaces we have available.

As well as gaining insight into how some of the traditional subjects are taught, the opportunity for hands on activities kept our visitors involved and intrigued. Many of our current students were involved in displays designed to show others how they learn various skills in a wide range of areas. The Marist Centre with PD/H/PE and Sport activities, the hospitality kitchens with students making a variety of dishes, the Science labs with experiments and students crafting objects in the Woodwork areas were some of the highlights. Our Music department kept the atmosphere alive and entertained visitors

as they enjoyed afternoon tea at Café Marcellin which was well supported by our P&F Association. Mr John Hickey also held a number of Open Forums where people were able to ask questions about life and education here at Marcellin College.

This year’s Open Day was a great success, where the staff and students were able to showcase the wide variety of opportunities and experiences which are offered to our students on a daily basis here at the College.

To all the families that sent in food to feed all the people visiting the School on Open Day, Thank You.

To all the parents that assisted at the “Marcellin Cafe” on Open Day, a big Thank You. Your personal commitment was incredibly helpful and allowed us to reach out to those families visiting our wonderful school.

#S E R V E - MCR Solidarity and TAS

The Solidarity program at the College presents students with many opportunities to serve the community. Students are involved with Sydney Night Patrol, Matt Talbot, Little Sister of the poor and the Lenten appeal.

Sydney Night Patrol involves Year 9 and Year 11 students. The Year 9 students bring in food, blankets and toiletries to be distributed by Year 11 students and staff to people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. This occurs on Sunday evenings at Martin Place, Surry Hills and Central Station in the city.

This year, Ms Moore’s Year 9 Food Technology classes have decided to contribute to Night Patrol by baking Anzac biscuits for the less fortunate in our community. It is wonderful to see our boys acting out the College theme of Service and making such a positive contribution to our community. Many clients on Sunday night enjoyed a home baked biscuit with their tea and coffee.

Well done boys and Ms Moore!

Australian Catholic Youth Festival - December 2015

The Australian Catholic Youth Festival was held in Adelaide from 3 December – 5 December 2015. It is a national gathering of Catholic young people established by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference and is to provide young people with opportunities to deepen their relationship with Jesus, be empowered to be disciples in the world today and encounter and celebrate the vitality of the Church in Australia. Nine Marcellin College students went to the festival, accompanied by Youth Ministry Coordinator, Miss Anita De Francesco…

Joshua BirtlesYear 11

Last December, nine boys from the Year 10 2015 cohort, along with Miss De Francesco, were given the opportunity to attend the Australian Catholic Youth Festival. The festival was held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, and it began with opening plenaries consisting of a wide range of significant speakers and interactive live music, which we sang and danced along to. Performances included Steve Angrisano, Stephen Kirk, Genevieve Bryant, Gary and Natasha Pinto, Father Rob Galea and lots more!

After the plenary, we headed off to a range of forums and workshops inspiring us to give thought to current social issues, but it also allowed us to strengthen our relationship with God and develop our faith. We also had the chance to go to reconciliation. What I liked most about the festival was making friends with other young Catholics and sharing our faith, love and beliefs for God together.

We were very lucky to be in the presence of Archbishop Anthony Fisher to celebrate the Eucharist and listen to his very inspiring Homilies. When we weren’t at the festival, we were hanging with our new friends, praying, reflecting and getting to know each other. At the closing Mass on Saturday night Archbishop Anthony made an exciting announcement that the next Festival will take place in Sydney in 2017! I’d like to say a big thank you to Miss De Francesco for taking care of us on the trip and everyone involved in making the festival a truly memorable experience that I will never forget.

The Music Corner

ENCORE

On February 22, the senior Music Elective students in Year 11 and 12 attended the ENCORE performance, which is a program of outstanding performances and compositions by students from the Higher School Certificate Music examinations from 2015. It is held annually at the Sydney Opera House.

Performances had a variety of styles of music from the Music 1, Music 2 and extension courses. It was a wonderful way for our students to see the standard of musicians across the 2015 NSW HSC cohort. We witnessed performances from brilliant jazz pianists, to music theatre vocalists, and rock guitarists, all showcasing high ability, technical skill, and what it takes to be in the top 10% of the state in the Music courses.

As our senior students prepare for the HSC this year in performance, this experience has given them some inspiration and repertoire ideas for their own HSC performances and encouraged the Year 11 students to think ahead for ideas for their own HSC in the following year.

MCC SUMMER SEASON – GRAND FINALSLast Thursday saw the completion of the summer MCC season. Marcellin had six teams contesting Grand Finals - U14 and U16 Cricket, U14, U15 and B Grade Basketball and A Grade Touch. All those involved continued the strong tradition this College has in performing well in the summer season (all match results included below).

Our U16 Cricket team were outstanding in limiting the Lewisham batsmen, winning the match by ten wickets. The U14s Cricket and U15s Basketball teams were victorious and brought home the premiership trophy after dominant performances against Ryde and Ashfield respectively. After a tight first half, the B Grade Basketballers found their groove to claim back to back premierships. Our U14 Basketball team claimed the most exciting victory of the day with a superb ‘3-pointer’ with only seconds remaining to defeat Pagewood. Well done to our A Grade Touch team who were fine representatives of the College and should be proud of their efforts in reaching the grand final. All in all, we claimed five premierships from the twelve competitions contested over the summer.

Congratulations to all summer MCC representatives and coaches for their efforts and excellent results throughout the season.

BASKETBALL - ‘DANIEL ROMEO MEMORIAL TROPHY’On Friday, 26 February a team of Marcellin ‘Old Boys’ took on our A Grade team in the Daniel Romeo Memorial Basketball game. The Old Boys managed to maintain the momentum this year with a 68-53 victory over MCR team. We were fortunate again to have Daniel’s family at the match, along with a number of parents, staff and students. Thanks to all players and supporters involved, particularly Ms Jenny Dove, Mr Clinton McDonald and Mr Daniel Ivancic for their organisation of the match.

RUGBY LEAGUE & SOCCER TRIALSTrials for all winter MCC teams (Soccer and Rugby League) will officially get under way in Week 7 (Tuesday 15 and Thursday 17 March).
