From the Headmaster

I remember the final weeks of his life. I remember Mum bringing him to my office to share lunch one day. I was Principal at St Patrick’s Marist College, Dundas – the school all my brothers and I had attended and that my Mum and Dad had supported very generously including many years on the P&F. As the years have gone by my fondness for Dad has intensified. Somehow, things from the recesses of my mind come flooding to the forefront and I recall in a way I had never appreciated, things he said and did for me, my family, our neighbours and his workmates. parenting more into the work of a psychologist than a human being genuinely trying to do the right thing. Sure, talking more with your kids is often a good thing, and in some ways I wish my Dad might have done more of that with me, but sometimes what you model through your actions speaks just as loudly. Sometimes skimming stones across the lake together is more powerful than any words.

From the Deputy Headmaster

The start of Term 3 marks the beginning of Semester Two at Marcellin College. In order to improve in learning, we must look back and reflect on what we have done in the past. The parent/teacher interviews last week and this week are such a valuable opportunity to sit with all of your son’s teachers and discuss Semester One. My suggestion to parents is to listen carefully to the teachers and the advice they have for your son and ask any questions to seek clarification. Following the interviews, I hope families sit down and plan the steps ahead in order to maximise the learning opportunities with a view to improve. The parent/teacher conversation does not have to end at the conclusion of parent/teacher night. I would encourage an ongoing conversation between parents and teachers via email to assist in the partnership of educating your sons.

At our assembly Monday I mentioned to the school that we have very high standards when it comes to appearance, behaviour, work ethic and respect. To be part of this community, every student must live up to these standards and be a positive contributor at Marcellin. With this in mind, I challenge every boy in the school to work hard, ask questions, meet challenges, get involved and respect everybody.

I would like to thank the boys, both supporters and players, for their behaviour at the MCC grand finals yesterday. Our students went to three venues across the city to support our rugby league and soccer teams in their matches. The boys were a credit to the College and I congratulate them on this. Well done to all the teams who participated yesterday, especially to my victorious U15 rugby league team (pictures right).

Well done boys!

THE

LIONEL BOWEN LECTURE SERIES

PRESENTED BY

MARCELLIN COLLEGE RANDWICK

This year marks the commencement of an important Marcellin College initiative – The Lionel Bowen Lecture Series. In creating this initative, we seek to engage with leading figures in Australian society who have contributed significantly to the common good, and inspire others to emulate their example. The lecture series is a public event open to all in our Marist and Catholic secondary schools network.

This is what we want for the young men at Marcellin College – a broadening of their view of the world; an acceptance that with their privileged upbringing they have a responsibility to be good citizens who contribute to the common good. These are the themes that the Lionel Bowen Lecture Series seek to explore.

The lecture series is named in honour of Mr Lionel Bowen, former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia and Old Boy of Marcellin College. Mr Bowen, who passed away in 2012, remains highly regarded for his significant contribution and service to the public at all levels of government.

I warmly invite you to join us for this special event. The inaugural lecture will be presented by Mr Jeff McMullen.

4 MARCELLIN COLLEGE RANDWICK NEWSLETTER

On Friday evening, 18 July, the inaugural TAS, Music and Art Showcase was held at the Marist Centre. The event was to provide parents, staff and students the opportunity to see HSC major works in the areas of music, industrial technology, design and technology and art.

The showcase presented a range of artistic and technical work, including creative curved and angled timber work from Industrial Technology Timber, video animation and hyper real drawings from the Visual Arts Department, and innovative design concepts such as a floatation device to aid disabled swimmers from Design and Technology. Throughout the evening, visitors to the exhibition enjoyed a variety of musical items, including the talents of our singers, guitarists, percussionists and our jazz band.

The showcase was a great success. Special thanks to the staff who worked tirelessly to prepare the Year 12 students. We wish the students well in their upcoming HSC examinations and assessments.

6 MARCELLIN COLLEGE RANDWICK NEWSLETTER

From the Director of Teaching & M-Learning

Teaching and Learning at Marcellin into Semester Two has started with a bang, in more ways than one. Our building project continues, with the promise of some wonderful learning opportunities being created for our students. The sacrifices we are making at the moment will certainly be worth it in the long run. We’ve also just completed two very successful Parent / Teacher Interview sessions, and in week three will be holding our Headmaster’s Academic Awards Assembly. This assembly allows us to highlight the elite achievements of our students from the first semester.

Last week the College hosted a glittering evening where our HSC students showcased their Major Works in Industrial Technology, Design & Technology and Visual Arts, all in the backdrop of our Musicians performing their wares on the stage. On display for all to see and hear were not only the talents of our students, but also those of their dedicated teachers, who have supported their learning over the six years.

Next week sees the formal completion of the HSC Assessment Schedule with the College holding the HSC Trial Exams. These exams, in most cases are the last assessment task for our students in their HSC Courses. Due to our building work, the exams this year will be held at the Randwick Town Hall. We thank the Randwick City Council for their support and cooperation with this event. The College felt that holding the exams in our Marist Centre would not be appropriate in the context of the capital works project. Students involved in Special Provisions will sit their exams at the College. The Exam schedule is available on the College’s website. We wish our boys well in these examinations.

Many thanks to all who supported the John Hennessey Financial Hardship Fund raffle which was drawn at the HSC Showcase on Friday, 18 July. Money raised for the fund this year alone now totals $37,900.

The lucky winners were: 1st - Jack Cuthbert (Yr 12), 2nd - Tim Lawson (Yr 9) and 3rd - Mrs Angela Walsh.

Sacramental Program

We started the first session of the Sacremental program this week, and the boys are very keen. If your son is interested, or even just wants to find out about it, it is not too late to participate...

Has your son missed any of the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist or Confirmation? Do you want him to complete them? Do you want your child to have his faith to rely on when times get tough? This year we will be running a program for students who would like to come to a deeper knowledge of Jesus Christ and who express a desire to join the Catholic Christian family through the Sacraments of Initiation. Our hope is that students will be prepared for a life of Christian service as a result of the program. I look forward to assisting your son with his decision to further develop his relationship with Jesus. Mrs Mary Ivancic - Sacramental Program Coordinator

Year 9 Debating Semi Finalists

Last Friday’s semi final against Lakemba at Lewisham saw the Year 9 Debating team given the negative side of the proposition– ‘Governments Should Take More Responsibility for the Planet.’ Using a series of excellent higher order examples drawn from politics and quality news media, the Marcellin team took the line that the government already takes responsibility for the planet, but that more responsibility for the environment should lie with the general public and the individual. While Marcellin were easily the match for Lakemba, the affirmative team team’s third speaker managed to convince the adjudicators that their team line was slightly more ‘on topic’ than ours.

I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching this talented team in 2014. Frank Strati has become an exceptionally confident first speaker and performed his duties as captain with considerable poise and efficiency. Oscar Strachan in his first season at debating developed an ability to tug the heartstrings of the most hardened adjudicator and Caleb Siles as the ‘smiling assassin’ could always be relied upon to charm audiences while ruthlessly demolishing opponents at the same time. Our substitute Timothy Lawson performed a highly competent second speaker role in one contest and assisted regularly in practice debates. I would like to thank the boys for demonstrating dedication and enormous camaraderie and spirit this season. I would also like to acknowledge the support of the parents and families who are a very enthusiastic, fun and helpful crew indeed. Also, thanks to Miss Greenwood for her energy and enthusiasm, and the Year 10 debating squad for providing quality opposition for the boys in practices.

I noted that in summing up the debate at Lewisham the adjudicators (there are three in a semi-final) pointed out that while both teams were excellent, neither had given adequate attention to the word ‘should.’ I would therefore like to make it quite clear that our Year 9 debaters should nonetheless be extremely proud of themselves.

Mr Ben Rice - Year 9 Debating coach

WINTER SEASON – Rugby League & SoccerYesterday, Thursday 24 July, Marcellin was represented in five rugby league grand final matches and the A Grade soccer grand final (results included on next page).

Of the six grand finals we competed in, our teams were victorious in two. Special congratulations to the U15 Rugby League team, coached by Mr Buxton and Mr Chase, and the A Grade Soccer team, coached by Mr Sgouras on their victories yesterday, becoming Premiers for 2014.

Well done to all other players and coaches involved in the U13A, U13B, B Grade and A Grade Rugby League for their efforts and performances in matches yesterday. Our grand final results highlight the competitiveness of the MCC competition and how difficult it is to win premierships.

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTSIn recent weeks, two of our students Campbell Graham (U15) & Nat Butcher (U18) represented NSWCCC in rugby league. Reaching such a level of representation is a fine achievement for these boys. Nat also achieved selection in the Australian Schoolboys U18 rugby league team as a result of his outstanding performances at the national selection carnival. While he competes in a team sport, Nat has excelled individually and thoroughly deserves such recognition. Congratulations and well done to both of these students.

From the Sports Coordinator

MCC ATHLETICSOur Athletics squad began training this week in preparation for the MCC Carnival to be held on Thursday, 21 August at ES Marks Field. For those boys involved in this squad, training will be held each week on Tuesday afternoon at ES Marks Field (3.45pm – 5.00pm) and Thursday at Marcellin Fields during regular sport time.

INTERNAL SPORTOur Internal Sport program is under way for Term 3. Boys in Years 7 - 8 will participate in their year group/house sport at Coral Sea Park, while Years 9 - 11 are involved in various Free Choice Sport activities. Year 12 boys will continue with the Literacy Program unless they are involved in MCC Sport.
