The Lionel Bowen Lecture – Addressing Citizenship and the Common Good

On Wednesday 30 August, this year’s Lionel Bowen Lecture was delivered by Fr Frank Brennan SJ AO. Fr Brennan, currently the chief executive officer of Catholic Social Services Australia, addressed an audience of 300 people including Year 12 students, staff of the College, members of the Bowen family, members of the Marist Brothers Randwick community, as well as parents and others from the broader Marcellin community.

This lecture series was initiated in 2014 with a motivation to focus squarely on what it means to be a good citizen. The choice of speaker is an important one in this context. As stated in the booklet distributed on the night, it is to be “a lecture from a prominent Australian who has demonstrated a commitment to the welfare and service of others. A person whose life journey has enamoured them to the cause of a fair go for all people.” Frank Brennan has been amplifying the voice of the marginalised for many years, often challenging those in authority and making life a little uncomfortable. Labelled by former Prime Minister Paul Keating as “that meddling priest” and by another former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd as “an ethical burr in the nation’s saddle,” the National Trust has classified him a Living Treasure. He is therefore, a most fitting person to deliver this year’s address.

In providing a wonderful tribute to Lionel Bowen and the legacy he left, Fr Brennan chose five contemporary issues of the Common Good to discuss, weaving a Lionel Bowen thread through each one of them. The issues he chose were:

1. Same Sex Marriage2. School Funding3. Constitutional Change4. Aboriginal Recognition5. Bill of Rights

As mentioned in the opening paragraph, our Year 12 students attended the lecture. Part of the reason for this is for these young men to engage with issues that impact on the Common Good. Our founder urged all in Marist schools to have as our mission to produce good Christians and good citizens and this lecture series seeks to inspire our senior boys to emulate the example of the person who delivers the address in the building of the common good.

Lionel Bowen is of course one of our finest Old Boys. His commitment to the Common Good through his public life was evident in so many ways and he is undoubtedly as good a role model as we could hold up for our boys. I will leave the last words on him though to Fr Brennan who concluded his address with these words:

At Lionel’s state funeral in St Mary’s Cathedral, former Prime Minister Bob Hawke described Lionel as a man of ‘pure crystal’. You here at Marcellin espouse the cerise and blue crystal. We salute Lionel Bowen as one of your finest. Let’s remember that hand shake of decency, that smile of wily knowing political achievement, and that glint in the eye of the one who knows and hopes that ultimately the common good can triumph over self-interest and selfish individualism.

A Prayer for the Graduating Class of 2017

Dear Lord,

Help our Year 12 students in their studies and in the Higher School Certificate examinations. Grant that they may reflect the best of the work they have done and the best of the teaching they have received.

Lord you are the source of light and wisdom:

Graciously let the ray of your wisdom penetrate the depths of these Year 12 students. Grant them a sharp sense of understanding, a retentive memory, and the ability to grasp concepts correctly. Grant them the talent of being exact in their explanations, and the ability to write, clearly and with good sense.

May your grace cover their anxieties so that they are encouraged to strive to do and be their best.

May your spirit guide them as they unfold the next chapters of their lives. Help them to enliven hope in the world and bring good things to Your Kingdom. And, may this celebration be a reflection of the blessings that they find in knowing and loving you.

Lord, bless these students in all ways. Give them a heart full of love, a head full of hope, and wisdom to guide them. Thank you, Lord. In your name,

Amen.

Icon Visit at Marcellin College

This year is the Marist Brothers’ Bicentenary Year and to commemorate the occasion, four Icons were commissioned to capture the story of the founding of the first community of Brothers. The Icons travelled around Australia, visiting every Marist College. On 1 September, two Icons arrived at our College and dwelled amongst us for a week, before continuing their journey.

To mark the significance of this momentous event, the College organised a public procession on Tuesday, 5 September of the Icons. The procession made its way through a still and reverend guard of honour which started with the Year 12 cohort and finished with the Year 11 students. The procession commenced from the Brothers’ House next to the College on Alison Road, and from there it made its way onto the College grounds and down to The Marist Centre. Along the way, the College participated in the Angelus prayer. Inside The Marist Centre, former Headmaster, Br David Hall FMS, addressed the College, captivating the boys with his engaging explanation of the relevance and significance of the Icons as they symbolised the Marcellin story.

After the College gathering, Br David then addressed both the Year 7 cohort and the senior student leaders of the College on the meaning of The Marcellin Graduate and the importance of our Marist vision.

The Icons, painted by Central Coast artist Mr Michael Galovic, were displayed in our Fourviere Room for the remainder of the week, with many classes and individual students having the opportunity to admire the work and ponder on the Icons’ importance in our College.

The College feels extremely privileged to have been a part of this wonderful event. The Icon visit has surely reinvigorated the Marist charism amongst us all.

DYING BOYThis is the story of St Marcellin visiting a young boy who was dying knowing nothing of God. The artist has chosen much darker colours to emphasise this crisis for this young boy and the local church.

While the painting shows the boy has already died and is in the care of the angels, St Marcellin is depicted contemplating how he can respond to this crisis to make Jesus known and loved.

MAY MIRACLEThis painting represents the difficultly that the Marist Brothers had with student behaviour in establishing the school at The Rocks in 1872. It wasn’t until the Brothers invited the students to build an altar to Mary and to pray to her that things changed.

The chaotic bottom of the painting quickly gives way to the more ordered church stained glass windows. The bright golden colour suggests that this change was a gift of the Holy Spirit.

ATSI Program

The last few weeks have been busy for our ATSI boys. Our senior boys have attended open days with Nuragili at UNSW and with AIME at Sydney University. Both days were very informative for the boys and making the transition to further study and employment clearer as well as introducing them to the support they can rely on in the next stage of their learning.

Year 11 and 12 have also joined the NRL School to Work (S2W) program. The program designed and supported by ten NRL clubs including the Sydney Roosters, and various government agencies, aims to support Indigenous students in their learning and in their transition to work or further study as well as to ‘be a legend for themselves, their families and their communities’. The boys are working with our School to Work Project Officer Jason Solomon to transition into employment or the course they are aiming for after their HSC.

Another highlight for Year 12 was their Year 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Graduation Ceremony held by Sydney Catholic Schools on August 30. The boys were congratulated by Dr Dan White and the amazing Isaiah Dawe as the keynote speakers. The boys were enthralled with Isaiah’s message of perseverance and the importance of community. Each of the boys was presented with a graduation certificate and a message stick. It was a very proud night for our graduating ATSI boys, their families, Mr Leary and myself.

Throughout the term, all the boys have completed another round of AIME tutoring on Wednesday afternoons, with the

tutors being very complementary about the dedication of the boys and the unity of the group. Years 7-11 will attend a final session at the University of Sydney with their AIME tutors early next term. The Year 12 were presented with their very coveted AIME hoodies at the Sydney University open day.

Last week the Year 7-9 ATSI boys attended a second Goodjarga day at NCIE where they were part of a smoking ceremony and story session with Uncle Graham, contemporary and traditional dance workshops as well as a singing session learning Emily Wurramara's single Black Smoke.

Above: MCR Year 12 students receiving message sticks and graduation certificates at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Graduation Ceremony

And lastly, Graham Toomey, father to Jacob Toomey in Yr 12 has begun a special indigenous art project with all of our ATSI boys. Graham started with a very special session about the importance of indigenous art and connection to community. The boys really enjoyed holding the tools that have been used by generations past. We look forward to continuing this project with Graham next term.

WorldSkills Australia - Commercial Cookery and Construction Competitions

On Tuesday 29 August, I participated in the Archdiocesan Inter-Catholic Schools Competition at Waverley College, competing amongst some of the best hospitality students in the region. The menu was a three course meal with an entrée, main and dessert. The three dishes that I had to make were a Caesar Salad, Chicken Supreme with Vegetables and an Orange Rice Pudding.

Going into the challenge I was feeling nervous but excited at the same time, having the opportunity to cook food for real chefs whilst still being in school. The day was very competitive, with each student plating up a number of outstanding dishes.

I would like to thank the school for given me the opportunity to attend the competition and a very big thank you to Mary-Clare Turnbull and Carol Amorim for giving me a chance to show off my skills in front of professional chefs.

Jacob Dela Torre - Year 11

On Wednesday, 30 August, World Skills hosted a construction competition at Champagnat Catholic College Pagewood. We had to make a drawing board frame, wedges and a T-square. We were marked on safety, planning, skill, presentation and the final overall project. Thanks to Mr Lee, Mr MacGee and the VET teaching staff for giving me this opportunity to compete in WorldSkills.

The Marist Oratory Comp 2017

Marcellin College performed sensationally at the Marist Oratory Competition at St Gregory’s Campbelltown this year, placing 2nd overall and winning the coveted ‘Encouragement’ trophy – considered to be the ‘Nobel Prize’ of Oratory among Sydney Public Speaking Coordinators.

Harry Joils in Year 7 showed not a trace of beginner’s nerves as he claimed first place for his powerful speech. Seasoned orator Hugh Doosey (Yr 10) placed third.

Perhaps the talking point of the night, however, was debutante Cameron Hay (Yr 12) who took out third in the ultimate test of wit and nerve - the Senior Impromptu category. And there is a story behind Cameron’s impressive achievement. For five consecutive years, this spirited school leader was rejected by the current Debating Coordinator at trials for both Oratory and Debating and handed the traditional ‘anyway, thanks for trying out’ consolation prize - a can of full strength Coca-Cola.

Undeterred, and hell-bent on not being fobbed off in such a way again in this his final year of schooling, Cameron brilliantly incorporated this very story into his off-the-cuff monologue as an example of perseverance paying off – finally getting his hands on a can of full strength public speaking glory in the process.

Also models of perseverance, strength of character and unbridled talent were Ari Tjandra (Yr 8), James Tirado (Yr 9), and veteran public speaker Alex Krikorian (Yr 12) who, while unlucky not to place in the top three, must have come high up in the rankings for the team to gain 2nd place overall.

Congratulations and thanks must also go to Miss Naleen Greenwood and Miss Caitrina Moran for their sterling efforts in preparing the boys’ speeches and supervision on what was a remarkable night.

From The Sports Coordinator

A Grade Basketball TrialThe MCR A Grade Basketball have begun their preseason with a trial against Waverley College. This was a great opportunity for both schools to blood some new players and build on team cohesion leading into their respective seasons. While there is still over a month until the MCC Summer Season begins it was clear to see that our A Grade side will be looking to replicate the successful 2016/2017 season. Marcellin were victorious in the trial 62-52.

NSW All Schools TaekwondoOn Saturday, 2 September, Jesse James (Year 11) and Jackson Mansutti (Year 12) competed in the NSW All Schools Taekwondo Championships held at Barker College. The tournament allowed competitors to enter in an age division which aligned with their respective belt colours. Jesse is a black belt and competed in the Opens Category. Jackson is a brown belt and due to competitor numbers was put up a division to compete with the black belts. In an unexpected sequence of events, both boys were on opposite sides of the draw and each were able to fight their way to the final. Having two MCR students compete in the Opens final is extraordinary and congratulations to both boys. Well done to Jesse who came away with the victory on the day and is the NSW All Schools Champion.

MCC Trials Summer MCC trials are now well underway and it was great to see so many students from all year groups put their hand up to trial for a school representative team. The competition for places is very high and this pushes all boys to compete at their very best, making the selection job for coaches very tough. I would like to congratulate all students who are selected and wish them all the best for the upcoming

season. For those who weren’t successful this time round, it’s important not to lose sight of your goal, learn from this experience and continue to work on your craft.

MCC competition will begin with a trial match against Champagnat Catholic College in Week 1 next term. Round One will follow in Week 2 against Holy Cross College Ryde. MCC VolleyballThe MCC Volleyball Competition was held at Genea Netball Centre on Thursday, 14 September with Marcellin being represented in the U/15’s and Opens Competitions. This is a one-day round robin competition with the 8 MCC schools split into two pools. Both teams faced challenging opponents in their opening two matches and finished in third place in their pool. This unfortunately meant both sides missed the semi finals and played in the 5th/6th place playoff. Thank you to Mr Stipic and Miss Dagasso for their work with the Opens squad and Mr Behan and Mr Kitchingman who took charge of the U/15’s side.

Final Results:• U/15’s – 6th Place• Opens – 5th Place
