Through faith our lives gain a new depth and meaning if we simply do as Mary says: Do whatever [Jesus] tells you.

INTRODUCTION TO THE LITURGY OF THE SUNDAY The Lord has betrothed himself to us in Christ Jesus and we are not abandoned. The wedding at Cana has Jesus at the heart of the

celebration. He is present now as we gather to celebrate. Here today he bestows upon us his blessings and his gifts - bringing forth faith and reassuring us of his fidelity and abundant grace. In relaying the words of the Lord to Israel, Isaiah uses the image of a marriage to describe the relationship between God and his Chosen People. Saint Paul reminds us that the Spirit gives many different gifts to be used to build up the community. The Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ first miracle - turning water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana.

FIRST COMMUNION - THE CELEBRATION OF ILLUMINATION

We welcome all the children preparing to receive First Holy Communion in 2019 to the Celebration of Illumination

in St. Matthew Parish in Rocky Mountain House! (Sunday - January 20, 2019 during Mass at 09.00 AM)

Weddings are joyous occasions which express our desire for a full and happy life. The image of a wedding is

frequently used throughout the Old Testament to describe God’s relationship with his chosen - Israel. Though

often unfaithful, God always took her back, forgave her and turned her sadness into joy. As she awaited the

coming of the Messiah, Israel’s hopes were expressed in terms of a wedding - a time of great rejoicing and

celebration. Like abundant wine, God’s blessings would be poured out on his people in full measure. ● As we

hear the account of the miracle at Cana, it is hard not to notice the shadow of the cross. Like all of Jesus’ signs

and miracles, this points to the greatest of all his signs: when he will be lifted up in obedience to the Father, for

the salvation of humanity. This will be how the new covenant - marriage between God and his people will be

brought about. Here Jesus speaks about his hour – a reference to that time when his truest identity and glory

will be revealed. ● Significantly also, Jesus’ mother is present at the wedding. In addressing her as woman, a

title he will also use from the cross, Jesus is referring back to another woman, through whom sin first entered

the world. Here now, through this woman - Mary, his mother - the healing of that sin will begin in her Son. ● For

Christians, the cross is the ultimate blessing, as it is the source of eternal life. So the 120-180 gallons of wine

is indicative of the inexhaustible riches of God poured out on the faithful believer. Just as a wedding is a sign of

who we are and what we hope for, so the miracle of Cana is a sign of what God offers us if we put our faith and

trust in him. ● Through the death and resurrection of his Son, God offers us more than we could ever hope. In

addition to the gifts of the Spirit as listed by Paul in Corinthians, God offers us the fullness of life and love. It is

through faith that the water of our daily lives with all its challenges and achievements can be transformed into

something far superior, full bodied and with a deep quality and bouquet. Through faith our lives gain a new depth

and meaning if we simply do as Mary says: Do whatever [Jesus] tells you.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity ➔ January 20-27, 2019

January is a month when Christians around the world pay particular attention to the unity of the Church. Specifically, Christians dedicate an entire week during the month to pray for unity among the followers of Jesus and especially to overcome historical and present divisions that exist between church communities. This year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be celebrated in Canada from January 20-27, 2019.

The theme for the 2019 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity comes to us from Indonesia: “Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue” (Deuteronomy 16:18-20). The 2019 theme calls us to move from shared prayer to shared action. Drawing on the traditional values of Bhineka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity) and gotong royong (living in solidarity and by collaboration), Indonesian Christians invite us to be a united witness, and an agent of Christ’s healing grace in a broken world, by making specific commitments to justice, equality, and unity.

A CHANCE TO MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE

CHARITY MISSION CHALLENGE

DADA MAISHA ORPHANAGE SCHOOL, MOROGORO, TANZANIA

ORPHANS AND WIDOWS

Remember the mission in Africa where Fr. Kazimierz Kubat worked for over

20 years? Our parishes even fund-raised a few times to help those

unfortunates, but then abandoned them when Fr. Kaz left us. The

Salvatorians helped this elementary school and now also a sanctuary for

homeless widows, many afflicted with Aids - some of the most vulnerable of

peoples. CHALICE CANADA has visited and researched this site at our

request and concurs the deep need of these poor for the most basic of needs.

A few nuns and brothers still struggle to operate the dormitory and better the

conditions and futures of as many as 70 homeless young children and about

2 dozen widows with food and education to better their lives and futures.

CHALICE Canada offers us a challenge to help sustain these Mission needs

by individual sponsorships (mere $37/month as explained on the pamphlets distributed by Peter van

Kampen). Their East Africa Director says that IF we can provide about 40 annual sponsorships (which

include RevCan charitable receipts) then Chalice will undertake ongoing financial support for this school,

orphanage and home for beyond-battered women of Kola Hill near Morogoro. In comparison we have so

much and they have so little. It is a great opportunity to serve other children of God.

If interested please contact the church office to pledge your willingness to sponsor.

For further information ask Father Leon Kler or Peter van Kampen or Dennis Nugent (403-597-8333).

Please do NOT sponsor on the Chalice website yet, as Morogoro will not be one of their menu choices until

we accumulate sufficient sponsor donations. God Bless!

MESSAGE FROM OUR SEMINARIAN J.D. CARMICHAEL

Hello Father Leon and all the parishioners of St. Matthew, Jesuit Martyrs, and St. Joseph the Workman,

I wanted to send a note saying a big thank you for your generous gift of a new Alb! I went to Universal

Church Supplies and got sized up in one that fits me well and I quite like the cut and the fabric. I think it

will last me for years to come and whenever I wear it, it will remind me of the good people in Rocky that

have been such a huge support.

Right now, I’m on my internship at the Twin Parishes of St. Anthony and St. Agnes in Edmonton. It’s going

very well and I quite enjoy being a part of this parish community. Some of the things I’m doing includes

going to the schools that are attached to our parish. I probably do three to four school visits each week

anywhere from Kindergarten classes to grade nines. I’ve also helped get our youth group going again after

the youth minister moved away. I’ve even called Peter van Kampen already getting ideas and resources!

I’ve also gotten involved with the Knights of Columbus. I became a Knight this fall and have already had

the opportunity to go through the initiation ceremonies to become a third degree Knight. I’ve also been

initiated into making pancakes! I think I made 500+ pancakes one Sunday morning!! I’m also doing a lot

of what you might expect in a parish. I’m on the RCIA team, helping with baptism prep, serving at the

liturgies and funerals, helping with the foodbank, visiting care homes, etc.

I just had my mid-year evaluation and it went quite well. My final internship evaluation is at the beginning

of May where if all goes well I will be invited to write to the Archbishop petitioning for ordination to the

Transitional Deaconate. So who knows, we might have an ordination coming up sometime. I’ll be sure to

keep you posted.

Please keep me in your prayers and I will keep you in mine. And thank you again for the Alb and for all your

love and support,
