A Jesuit parish uniting hearts and minds in the Spirit of Jesus Christ

March 18, 2018

Great stories are those whose meaning we never exhaust. We can go back to them many times and each time find something new. The Raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-45) is just such a story. It is the third story, from John’s gospel, about people coming to faith in Jesus. We hear these three great stories on the 3rd Sunday of Lent (The Sa-

maritan Woman at the Well), the 4th Sunday of Lent (The Man Born Blind), and this weekend’s The Raising of Lazarus. They help, in different ways, to emphasize how the men and women in our RCIA have more and more developed and strengthened their faith in Jesus. But these stories are not just for the Elect. They are for each one of us. They invite us to examine the quality of our faith through the characters in the story. Some questions may assist us to hear this story in new ways. Some ques-tions may assist us in discovering the quality of our faith in Jesus during these final weeks of Lent. There are four main characters in this story—Lazarus, Mar-tha, Mary and Jesus. With which character do you identify most, at this time in your life? What is there about this character that invites your imaginative identification? With which character in the story do you least identify? Try and describe this character in detail. What is there about this character that makes him/her difficult to identify with? Cultural anthropologists tell us that myths are truths that rise to articulation in community (Mircea Eliade). Christiani-ty, too, has its truths that find expression in her sacred sto-ries (scriptures). Joseph Campbell once said that “This is the final secret of the myth—to teach you how to penetrate the labyrinth of life in such a way that its spiritual values come through.” What “truths” or “spiritual values” do you find expressed in this story of The Raising of Lazarus? Here are three more questions that you can ask of this or any scriptural story. First, what “good news” do you hear in this story? What shape or shapes does this “good news” take? What “promise” or “hope” finds expression in this story? Second, what is the “brokenness” or “challenge” or “sin” that finds expression in this story? To what kind(s) of conversion are we being called through this biblical story? Third, what difference (if any) would it make if the contem-porary “good news” was applied to our contemporary “brokenness” or “challenge” or “sin”? In the latter part of this biblical story, three strong symbols appear—(a) the tomb, (b) the stone, and (c) the bindings.

What do each of these symbolize in your life, at this time? What are the tombs (i.e. places of death) that you some-times find yourself in? What are the stones (i.e. people, plac-es, things, thoughts, feelings, etc.) that keep you prisoner of these tombs? Who rolls away the stones in your life? Who are the people and what are some of the experiences that unbind you and help you leave those tombs or places of death in order to come out into the light of new life? As pastor and poet Steve Garnaas-Holmes reminds us: There is no birth without pain. There is no life without suffering. There is no love without surrender. There is no struggle without hope. Each new gift or challenge invites us to become new, to be born again. Our grave wrappings are swaddling cloths, as the voice of the Beloved cries to us in our tombs, “Lazarus, come out!”
