Wai‘alae Public Charter School Presents….
dMay Day 2016 Malama i ke Kai
This year we will be honoring the ocean and all it provides through song and dance. Our Hawaiian ocean is home to thousands of sea creatures, and the marine plant life
provides 70% of the oxygen that we breathe. In the ancient days, ocean resources were very important to each ahupua‘a, or district. The ocean was also a means of leisure
where they enjoyed favorite past times of surfing and canoe surfing. The ocean possesses great mana, or power, and it is the passageway to our ancestors.
* Please join us on Friday, May 6, 2016 at 10:00a.m. for our 11th annual Lei Day celebration! * Bleacher seating will be available. Beach mats & small lawn chairs welcomed! * Children’s attire info coming soon! Please support your grade level Learning Hui Coordinators!

Let’s Save Lives Together! Dear Parent/Guardian: For many years, Wai’alae School has been a proud participant of the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart program. This community service project teaches students the importance of heart health (exercise, nutrition and living tobacco free) while allowing kids to be physically active, and have fun, with a Jump Rope for Heart event. The program is also an opportunity for our school to raise funds for the American Heart Association to fund research and educational materials to lower the risks of America’s #1 and #5 killers: heart disease and stroke. This year, we will not be holding a Jump Rope for Heart EVENT, but we are asking families to help raise funds for the American Heart Association. Let’s use this opportunity as one way to demonstrate being socially responsible to others and the world.
American Heart Association Mission: to build healthier lives free from cardiovascular disease and stroke
MISSION FOCUSED: When your family discusses reasons for participating in this community service project (such as recognizing a lost loved one or a being aware of family history of heart disease), it helps children to connect the dots to a healthier life and might even inspire a few other family members to live heart healthy too!
LIFE-SAVING DONATIONS: o Use the attached collection envelope to track the donations your child receives from other family
members and friends. (We do NOT recommend door-to-door campaigning.) o Fill the online pledge sheet by creating a webpage and sending emails to your friends and family.
It’s fun, safe and easy! Visit www.heart.org/jump to get started and see REVERSE for detailed
online instructions. o Check out our app for smart phones that makes it easy for your child to text friends and family to
join their campaign to be a heart hero! Search Jump/Hoops in the app store.
INSTANT POST-EVENT
GET YOUR PUPPIES TO THE PARK! Students who raise life-saving funds for the American Heart Association will earn life-saving puppies. Collect all 6! See envelope for details.

My name is Arden Gergen. I am 7 years old and I have three sisters. I am special because I have half a heart. I only have the right side of my heart. I was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. I had lots of surgeries to fix my heart. My mom says that I have had four open heart surgeries. I eat lots of fruits and vegetables to make me strong and healthy. I like to exercise and run around my house while playing with my sisters. I love to read and I play the piano. I hope that all kids with sick hearts will get better like me. Then they can go to school, have fun, and not have to stay in the hospital every day. I do Jump Rope For Heart to help other kids that need help with their hearts.
