    Grace & peace my friends,

Welcome to Lent. Its kind of strange to saywelcome to a season of reflection and re-pentance. When we hear the word welcomewe think of times being welcomed into an-others home, or to an event. We dont oftenthink of a time of repentance and reflection asa time of welcome. But this Lenten season,I do want to welcome you to a time where youtake time to reflect on your faith and journey,as well as look to see where you need to makesome changes in your life and faith.

We are all a broken people, in some form orfashion, looking for ways to be healed to befixed. Sometimes this means making changes

n our lives. But where and how? Thismonth is the perfect time to search out thathealing, to look for the need to change.

    J. Barrie Shepherd wrote the poem Lookingfor Lent which recently appeared in the Pres-byterian Outlook, a poem I feel, that speaksto how a little change might lead to healingour brokenness.

    This Lent Im looking

    for a change

    no longer giving up

    but taking on instead

    the task of noticing whatever

    has been there unseen

    from the beginning

    perceiving all those mysteries

monsters too and eventhe odd miracle which

    until now escaped

    my eye caught up

    in catching up

    who knows

    what may be glimpsed

    between the Lenten rose

    and Easters banks of lilies

    perhaps even the footprints

    of the gardener himself

    whose waking walking word

    to us spells seeing

    is believing.

May each one of us welcome, in this season of reflection and change, with open hearts, minds, aneyes so we might better understand the gifts ograce in our midst.

    Blessings,

    March Birthdays

Earth Care MattersBy Lucy Beebe Tobias

Water. You turn the tap and it comes out. That is all you need to know. Right?Ummm. Take a deep breath. There's more to this liquid than off and on.

We drink it, bathe in it, swim in it and expect it to be there. But water is a finite

resource. Look at the pictures in newspapers and on TV of lakes in Florida goingdown, down, down. And here in Marion County there is a big debate whether acattle rancher should be permitted to draw 13 million gallons of water a day, morethan all the water used daily by the City of Ocala.

What can we do? Start where it matters - your own home and your church home,Fort King Presbyterian. First, let's tackle water that comes in a plastic bottle. Seeany plastic bottles of water around you?

Did you answer Yes? Ah, bad, very bad. Why? Because less than 14 percent ofthose water bottles are recycled, the rest end up in landfills. And it is so easy to

overbuy bottled water - get a few cases "just in case" for a meeting or event, fortossing in the car, for filling a refrigerator shelf.

Instead, commit today to using refillable stainless steel bottles - an investment that keeps on giving divi-dends. You use less water, less plastic going to the landfill.

To learn more, Presbyterians for Earth Care (www.presbyearthcare.org) , an eco-justice network, has a bro-chure "H20: How to overcome the Bottle Water Habit" - take the Bottle Water Quiz (on the back page),see if you pass or fail.

New year, new resolutions - here's one - no more bottled water.Mother Earth thanks you in advance for overcoming the bottled water habit. She is smiling.

To Your Healthchosen by Bonnie Schulze, Health Minister

Take Steps to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

The Basics: You can do a lot to lower your chances of getting type 2 diabetes. To prevent or delay getting type2 diabetes: Watch your weight. Eat healthy. Be active. Control your blood pressure and cholesterol. Diabetes isone of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. If its not controlled, diabetes can causeblindness, nerve damage, kidney disease, and other health problems. It pays to prevent diabetes. Sadly becauseof obesity in childhood, we are seeing children being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes previously called Type 2adult onset diabetes

What is diabetes?Diabetes is a disease. When you have diabetes, there is too much sugar (called glucose) in your blood. Over

time, if its not controlled, diabetes can cause serious health problems like heart disease, stroke, and blindness.

Diabetes can't be cured, but it can be treated.

What is type 2 diabetes? There is more than one type of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes (also called adult onset) is the most common form of

diabetes. People who are overweight are more likely to get type 2 diabetes. After a meal, the food you eat turnsinto glucose. Glucose is carried by your blood to other parts of the body. Your body depends on glucose for en-ergy. When you have diabetes, your body has trouble turning glucose into energy. Instead of being used by yourbody, the glucose builds up in your blood. The rest of your body is starved for energy.

What is prediabetes?Prediabetes means your blood glucose level is higher than normal. If you have prediabetes, you are at risk for

serious health problems, like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Am I at risk? You may be at risk for type 2 diabetes if you: Are overweight. Exercise less than 3 times a week. Are over 45years old. Have high blood pressure or cholesterol. Are African American, Latino, American Indian, AlaskaNative, Asian American or Pacific Islander. Have a parent, brother, or sister with diabetes.Check out this list of 50 ways to prevent diabetes(http://www.ndep.nih.gov/publications/OnlineVersion.aspx?NdepId=NDEP-71)

    DISCIPLESHIP

    Adult Discipleship Ministry

Two new and extraordinary learning opportunities began on February 12 and will continue for some weeks. Iresponse to some requests for serious Bible study, the Adult Discipleship Ministry is offering two series oclasses that will deepen your understanding of the Bible.

One series is entitled Jesus of Nazareth, led by Rabbi Tom McNeil. The seriebegins with understanding the world in which Jesus lived, covering life under th

Greek, Roman, and Judaic cultures. Further information about the series will bfound in future issues of the Link. The class will be held in the Session Room, beginning at the usual 9:15 starting time with coffee available.

Rabbi Tom, as he is affectionately known, decided at the age of 18 to prepare foministry in the Presbyterian Church and began teaching himself HellenistiGreek. Totally on his own, he worked his way through college and seminaryWith a faculty for language, he learned biblical Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac and Coptic. He has a great passion for understanding accurately the histories of both thJewish and Christian peoples, their interpretation of life and events in their owtime.

The other series of classes, An Approach to Studying the Bible, will betaught by Rhea (Ray) Forman. This class will use the Kerygma resourcebook, Listening to Scripture: Strategies for Interpreting the Bible by RichardRohrbaugh. The strategies to be covered are: (1) Exploring the HistoricalSetting, (2) Discovering the Literary Context and Audience, (3) IdentifyingOral and Literary Forms, (4) Analyzing the Structure, and (5) InvestigatingWords and Phrases. By using these strategies, you will be able to come closerto what a text once meant and what it now means. The classes, begin-ning at 9:15, will be held in the Education Building.

As this class may introduce new material, it will be to a participants advan-tage to have access to the book. While the cost of the book is expensive($18), it is like a reference book and can be used over and over.

Rhea is also a seminary graduate from an innovative program that brought together psychology and theologyHe went on to get his PhD in psychology and had an active practice for many years before he ventured out intother avenues of service including university teaching.

    Answers: Bottled Water Quiz

    (on back page)

    1. False. There is often no difference. Little is known about the health risks of water stored in dispos-able plastic (PET) bottles or the effect of additives over long periods at high temperatures.*2. False. The US EPA sets more stringent standards for tap water than the FDA does for bottled bever-ages. Roughly 40% of bottled water is actually tap water.*3. True. But using a refillable bottle is just as convenient and less expensive.4. False. According to the Container Recycling Institute, only 14% of PET bottles are recycled. The rest end up ilandfills or as litter. Millions of barrels of oil are required each year to produce and transport them.5. True. The Beverage Marketing Corporation states that Americans spent more than $9 billion on bottled waterin 2004 and that the products rate of growth was almost 10% per year for the previous 10 years.

    6. True. The UN adopted a resolution in 2003 calling this the Decade for Water. The Millennium Develop-ment Goals also have an objective to halve the number of people who lack reliable and safe drinking water by2015.7. True. Often selling for up to $2.50 a liter (which translates to $10 a gallon), bottled water is more expensivethan gasoline.8. False. The UN estimates that if the world took half of what it now spends on bottled water($100 billion per year) and invested it in water infrastructure and treatment, everyone in theworld could have access to clean drinking water.* In emergency and special health circumstances, bottled watermay be the only safe water available.

    Something to Think AboutExodus 20:1-17

In the 1980s, Nancy Reagans slogan, Just say no to drugs, was thought, by some, to be s

perficial. Perhaps. But heres something to think about:

The research ofBen Libet in 1999, following earlier German research, discovered that the brain initiates movment 550 milliseconds before physical activity; 100 milliseconds before physical activation, a person becomaware of the brains intentions to the degree that s/he has the power to decide to do or not to do that action. have veto-power over brain-initiated actions, such as reaching for a second helping of that seven-layered choclate fudge cake, kill my neighbor, or worshipping the gods of money and/or success-prosperity.

Free will is now an outmoded idea; neuroscientists prefer to say, based on research data, that we have the powof free-wont: I can decide not to do X-act, not only to avoid the consequences of my brain-initiated behaviobut to re-direct and re-orient the kind of person I am and want to become. (Jeffrey M. Schwartz, MD, and Shar

Begley 2002 The Mind and the Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental Force 303-310; Michael GazzanPh.D. 2005 The Ethical Brain 87-102).

Now lets use this perspective to help us sharpen our understanding of the Ten Command-ments (Exodus 2017); note carefully the wording which in Hebrew begins with lo = no:

no - other gods in my face = before meno - graven imageno - take the name of YAHWEH in vain (i.e. magically for my self-interest)remember- Sabbathhonor- Father and Motherno - you shall kill

no - you shall commit adulteryno - you shall stealno - you shall bear false witnessno - you shall covet your neighbor

The Commandments are free-wont in action:- What the societies and cultures around me, and in which I live, do,I choose not to do (have false gods, kill, etc.).- What the societies and cultures around me, and in which I live, do not do,I choose to do (Remember and Honor).

This means that I can choose to be a person that does not fit the image of the society and culture in which I livAnd what does this mean for us at FKPC?

It requires us, as followers of Jesus of Nazareth, to be critically aware of not only our own personal behaviors aattitudes, but also of just how comfortable we are in this society and culture; critically aware of both the sedutions of our culture to go with the flow and of the creative work we must do to make our society more humanWhoseimago/Image do we reflect in our lives and relationships: that of Caesar (the man or culture) or of GoSee Mark 12:17.

The ten words (See Exodus 20:1, 34:28) as free-wont are as applicable to us today as they were when Mosgave them. A choice stands before us one which we must make: to put free-wont into action in our lives is ocritical task in the Church today, in order to be authentic followers of Jesus of Nazareth.

    Psalm 19

We frequently hear the opening words of Psalm 19 recited:The heavens are telling (Hebrew: make known/declare) the glory of God;and the firmament proclaims His handiwork.

Or, the closing words of the Psalm:Let the words of my mouth and

The meditation of my heartBe acceptable in your sight.O Lord, my rock and my redeemer (v. 14).

We seldom hear whats in between these words. Welcome to the Psalm 19, the ham in the sandwich.

Creation (verses 1-6) and Torah (verses 7-13) are the two foci of Psalm 19, that is, creation and Toraenable a person to concentrate ones meditations on/about God. They serve as mediators to approach God prayer, and as such the prayer is objective, distant, and meditative (E. Gerstenberger Psalm I, 101), whi

means this: God is not present to the worshipper! By focusing on creation and Torah, I believe I can somehofocus my mind and heart on God to make some sort of contact with God, to make God pay attention to mAnd, in the process, I can garner rewards (v. 11), avoid presumptuous sins in order to be blameless and innocent of great transgression (v. 13). In other words, my meditations on creation and Torah, which serve mediators in my approach to God in prayer, are all about the benefits I may receive.

The Psalm, therefore, reveals the religious world of Torah-oriented synagogue worship (+/- 350 BCE), which contact with God by the worshipper is uppermost, which is why the prayer ends the way it does in ver14.

However, while this may be the concern of religious worship, it is a universe away from what Jesus of Nazare

said: The kingdom of God (Gods presence) is in your midst Now! (Luke 17:21f) And, if Jesus is right, hodo we worship God now?

    Shalom, Tom

    Taking Time for the Journey

We enter into Lent in gratitude for Gods gracious-ness. We are in awe of the beauty of this sacredspace with which God has gifted us. At the sametime, we come in grief; with deep sorrow for thelosses which Creation has borne. This Lenten sea-son we invite you to join us as we reflect on thesefeelings through an online Lenten Devotional.

With this online Lenten Devotional, we invite you to enter into Lent with us seeking reflecting ponder-ing Feasting and Fasting. Each devotional will contain scripture, prayer and reflection. There is a readingfor each holy day and one for each week of Lent. Please join us as we read and journey together.
