    Greetings Fort King family,

want to personally thank you all for your

ommitment to the churchs recent steward-hip campaign. This year we did the campaignlittle differently by trying to educate every-

ne on the essential meaning of stewardship;aring for what God has given us. Throughunday school classes, Moments for Ministry,nd sermons we came to understand that love, aith and hope are the essential cornerstonesor caring for Gods creation.

Giving back to God what God has so richlyiven to us is an act of faith, hope and love.tewardship, whether it be financial or acts ofervice, is an act of faith and love towards Godnd community. Our stewardship of time, tal-nts and finances represent our involvement in

Gods Kingdom. Through your gifts of financesnd time this body of believers is able to servend care for our Fort King community and thearger community in which we live and serve.

hope you have gotten a chance to fill out atewardship commitment card. These cards

not only ask about how God is asking you toive financially, but also how you can share

your time and God given gifts. Your time andGod given gifts are also imperative for the suc-ess of any activity or program, and the opera-ion of your church. Without your involve-

ment in the life and work of the church weease to be the church God has called us to be.

The total numbers arent in yet, but we hopehat through your gifts we will be able to fundur ministry programs this year. The Missions

    CONGREGATIONAL CARE

    To Your Health

How to reduce your stay in the hospital? Do laps around the ward.

Getting up and walking helps elderly people recover faster.

The next time Grandma or Grandpa winds up in the hospital, get them up walking as soon as they can. Pa-tients may think theyre supposed to stay put in their hospital bed, but new research suggests that those whowalk around the ward get sent home sooner. Researchers found that muscle capacity in elderly people can de-teriorate quickly. Even just a few short days of inactivity can lead to mobility issues and complications.

This is also good advice for elders living at home who may be couch potatoes. Get them up walking. Remembethe Breakfast Club? It was a radio show many years ago. They included a march everyday around the breakfasttable. (Sounds good to me) Bonnie.

    DISCIPLESHIPDISCIPLESHIPDISCIPLESHIPDISCIPLESHIP

    Greetings!

Over the past few years, members of the Session have been exploring ways to move into the fu-

ture, recognizing leadership revitalization to be a key part of our growth and sustainability.

After considering several different approaches we have settled on implementing a program calledFaith Leader, which is a small group formation exploring together what it means to be a spiritualleader.

After a year of making preparations, a group has been formed and we are ready to begin to em-bark on this journey together. Each of the participants has agreed to spend 28 weeks of study to-gether. Throughout our time together we will explore Biblical models of leadership. We will

study spiritual gifts and types and identify our own. We will take part in spiritual practices, estab-lishing habits of the body, heart, and mind that deepen our relationships with God, self, and oth-ers. We will enter into a time of discernment seeking to honestly answer the questions of how wecan know Gods will and name Gods presence both for ourselves and for our congregation. Inthe final weeks we will focus on developing a personal plan for ministry, responding to where wefeel God is calling each of us to uniquely minister and how we plan to answer that call.

I am excited for this group to begin to form community and nurture our inner journey and spiri-tual lives, so that we can hear Gods voice and call on our lives and within our community. I an-

ticipate this to be a powerful time not only for each of the participants, but for our Fort King com-munity as well.

I ask you to be in prayer for us, that we may be open to hearing one another and to the possibilityof transformation. I anticipate that we will grow deeper in our faith.

May we be awakened to where the Spirit is already present and moving among us and let us joinin!

    New Sunday School Class

    Walking the Talk

In 2002, Diana Butler Bass and others began to put together a study ofmainline practicing congregations which the group defined as a congrega-tion which has experienced renewed vitality through intentionally and crea-tively embracing one or more traditional practices. Bass, like many of us,grew tired of the critics describing old mainline denominations as culturallyirrelevant and hopelessly confused. That criticism prompted Bass to set outon a journey she described as, So, like the biblical character Joshua, I set offto spy out the land and find some like-minded pilgrims, hoping to discover adifferent kind of Christianity a Christianity for the rest of us (p. 3)The four year study culminated in the publication in 2006 of Bass book,Christianity for the Rest of Us. This book will be the guide for the class as we

look into such concepts as hospitality, discernment, healing, contemplation, justice, worship, reflection, beauty and inclusiveness.

But this is not a study just for an intellectual exercise. Rather, the aim is to reach conclusions which will leadto converting the talk into walk. It is hoped that our study will result in some concrete suggestions for theSession and further on, the congregation.

The study will span nine Sunday morning classes beginning on October 2nd and ending on November 27,2011. Thirty copies of the book have been ordered and are available in the church office for $10.00. Justthink, you can get a head start on the class!

    High Tide

All elementary aged children are welcome to join us for High Tide, The 2nd and 4th Sunday evenings from 5:00 7:00 p.m. The program includes dinner. We will be exploring rituals connecting them to our faith and toour lives. Cheryl Gans, Amy Roberts, and Niki Tripoldi are the High Tide leaders this winter and spring.

Embracing and Adult Faith by Marcus Borg Offered the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month at 10:00 a.m. in the Session room and at 7:00 p.m.

at the home of Pastor Andy. Author and Bible scholar Marcus Borg invites us to join him in revisiting Christianitys most fun-

damental questions: Who is God? What does salvation mean? What place does Jesus hold incontemporary Christian faith? The study addresses fundamental questions that adults strugglewith as faith matures. The five sessions include: God, Jesus, Salvation, Community, and Practice.

The Jesus I Never Knew by Phillip Yancey Offered on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at the home of Donna Johnson. This study will take you on a journey that will challenge you -- and change you. A journey that

will expand -- and very likely redefine -- your understanding of the person, teachings, and life ofJesus Christ. In this study, the group will press beyond familiar images of Christ to discover Jesus as you'venever known him: radical, compelling, compassionate, bold, incisive, and ultimately satisfying.

If you are interested in either of these studies please contact the church office to order your $10 participantsguide.

    Evangelism

In August Charles Vowinkel, Carol and I attended a four day Presbyterian Church USA Evangelism Conferencein St. Pete Beach. Over the next couple of months I will try to highlight some of the information we brought back

    from this conference.Randy Butler

Embracing the new normal and discovering how cultural shifts affect evangelismDiscipleship

Learning how discipleship and spiritual disciplines lead to organic and authentic evangelism

    We Are Designed For Good

God created human beings to love God, love one another and care for Gods creation. We Are Damaged By Evil

Creation is broken because of our desire to take control, to be God instead of trusting God and living into ourpurpose. Lives are broken, relationships are broken, communities are broken.

    We Are Restored For Better

The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ bring us forgiveness and hope and set us on a journey of healingthe world.

We Are Sent To Heal TogetherThis is the mission of the church. Evangelism is the good news of Gods healing and saving love in Jesus Christ.Evangelism is a lifestyle in which a follower of Jesus Christ shares faith and serves others in need.

19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son

and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remem-

ber, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20

The good news is not about starting new programs, increasing membership or improving budgets in our church. The good news is Gods love.

We each have a story to tell, a story of how our life has been changed by the gospel. What is your story? Takesome time to write out your story. Here are some guidelines to use:

How is my life different because I am a follower of Jesus Christ? Who were and are the people who have helped and are helping me grow in my commitment to Gods way

    of life in Jesus Christ?

How has God worked in my life to help me grow as a disciple of Christ?

What is God doing right now in my life that is good news? The people around us not only need to be served by us, but they need to hear why we are serving our communi-ties and living a different lifestyle. How does your story engage the Gospel?

    More coming next month.

    Great News!! New Carpet?

A friend of Fort King Presbyterian Church has noticed our need to replace the original 1986 carpeting in ourSanctuary and Narthex. The person has donated $10,000 to the church for the purpose of replacing the carpetand possibly re-coloring the pews. This gift comes with a challenge to the church to raise the remainingamount needed to complete the project. The complete cost is approximately $15, 000, meaning the member-ship needs only to raise approximately $5,000.

The Session has approved receiving the gift and raising the remaining amount. To make a gift, which is above

and beyond any normal giving, please place a note or memo on your check stating the gift is for Sanctuary car-pet.
