Page 19 for village news
Welcome,
From the cover picture of bulrushes taken last year on the Carters Meadowpond it’s no surprise that this month’s theme is all about this special localasset.
Your March editors Keith Flynn and Peter Hawkes live either side of themeadow and consider themselves lucky enough to be able to walk there inless than a minute. For the rest of us it’s probably a short car journey butstill well worth the effort (and there is ample free parking). Hopefully thearticle in this month’s magazine will tempt you to visit.
If you think you know of a local feature, especially if it’s close to the Bacton,Cotton and Wyverstone area and you think it will be of interest to othervillagers how about sharing your information? Just [email protected] and they will help you get it into print.
There is the usual wide range of local businesses and tradesmenadvertising in this month’s issue and if you should get in contact with oneplease let them know where you saw their advertisement, it’s good for theParish News and it keeps your subscription low.
Good luck to Dick and Sue Middleton, your April editors, and we hope youenjoy this month’s edition.
“So you think you know-it-all”
Show us how good you really are!

Just Gardening . . .
Everybody who has an interest in gardening will have their own experienceand their own way of doing things. In certain areas of gardening there aredifferent opinions on how to tackle a particular problem.
Personally I don't like straight lines. I like flowing curves and a mixture oftextures in my garden. I like my garden divided into sections and it's alwaysnice to be able to look around a corner. So there can always be somethingof a surprise waiting for you.
With the weather conditions as bad as they have been recently it's difficult tocarry out any work in the garden. Having said that there is still work to bedone. If you have a recycling compost area in your garden and you want awarm job, you might think about turning it over. If you have an area bigenough it's a good idea to move the compost from one bin to another. If youare fortunate enough to have a greenhouse make sure all the flat surfacesand slats are cleaned down. Cleanliness prevents disease. Make sure allyour pots and seed trays are clean and ready for the busy time ahead. Startthinking about making a plan for the coming season.
If you have a lawn avoid treading on your lawn, with all the snow and icewe've had recently you will only cause damage. It's best to stay off the lawnthis time of year.
Don't forget the wildlife at this time of the year; they are having a difficulttime. If you can, make sure there's a good supply of wild bird seed, nuts orother food. Fresh water needs to be put out each day. Once you encouragebirds to visit your garden they will know where the food and water supply isand they will continue to frequent your garden.
Over the coming months we will be talking about Small Gardens, LargerGardens, Allotment Gardens, Herb Gardens, Container Gardens and WildGardens to name but a few.
Happy Gardening.Norman Parcell.

BACTON COMMUNITY MIDDLE SCHOOL
Last month we were very excited about the girls Under 13s Basketballteam who got through to the county finals, further than any of our teamshad reached before. How proud they made us with their 100% effort andcommitment. If only four more shots had gone in….Another group of pupils we’re proud of is Mr Ewing’s Year 8 class. Theyhave achieved exceptionally highly for their age and are well placed to getgood GCSE grades at high school.
We always enjoy having visitors to the school and so it was particularlylovely to have parents joining in a Year 6 maths lesson alongside theirchild. The visit was made more enjoyable (and less stressful!) by startingwith coffee and a practice of the fractions work, before the children arrivedfor the real lesson. As mentioned in the last newsletter, we work closelywith the local primary schools and as part of this we are hoping to inviteparents of Year 5 pupils to a morning of fun and practical maths activities.Hopefully, many of you were able to visit the school to enjoy the villagepanto.
Never wanting to miss an opportunity, the snow gave us the chance to donwellies and warm coats and build snowmen. Having such extensive fieldspace is so wonderful at times like this and saves being cooped upindoors.
Keeping abreast with technology is a constant challenge. The Englishteachers are leading the way with “blogging” and are encouraging thechildren to use blogging to improve their work. Some of them are alsoinvolved in “quad blogging”, so that children from four schools (includingone in Canada) are sharing their work.

Junior Church Lent
In the forty days running up to Easter is the season of Lent, it starts onShrove Tuesday when in the past Christians would have gone to be‘shriven’ or cleansed of all their sins, then until Easter they would havefasted, eating only very simple foods and drinking water. That is howwe get Pancake Day; the housewives would have cooked all the foodleft in the larder as it would not be used during the fast of Lent. Thenext day, is Ash Wednesday and in a special service you can besigned with the sign of the cross, in the ashes of the burned PalmSunday crosses from last year.Of course although we celebrate Pancake Day still; not many peoplefast, some give up special treats such as chocolate or biscuits butmany use Lent as a time of special prayer and reflection and to thinkabout the very special time of Easter, when Jesus died on the crossand rose again to be our salvation.
Prayer is something many people find difficult but it can be very simple.Sometimes as I walk with my dog I stop, have a few moments of quietand just say “Thank-you God, for all I have and for the wonderful placeI live in” then I say a little prayer for those who aren’t as lucky. On theradio a few days ago I heard someone say that every loving or caringdeed you do for someone else is a prayer to God, what a lovelythought. Enjoy Your Pancakes!!

ALL THE RUNNERS IN THE STADIUM
If you travel from Suffolk to London by train, as you pass Stratford you
can see the Olympic site is nearly ready. Clocks are steadily counting
down the days to the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer.
Saint Paul often used images from the Games when he was writing aboutthe Christian life. He reminded the Christians of Corinth in his First Letter(1 Corinthians 9: 24 – 27) that all the runners in the stadium are trying towin but only one gets the prize. He says that we must run like that in ourChristian life and go into strict training, like the athletes, if we want to winthe prize. In the ancient games there were no medals but the winnerreceived an olive wreath. Saint Paul says we are not looking for a wreaththat fades away, but the prize of everlasting life in Christ Jesus. Everyonewho competes in this race can be a winner.
The present Season of Lent is a time of strict training in the Christian life, rooting out habits of sin by prayer, fasting and almsgiving, a time to treatthe body hard and make it obey us, to strive to win the crown of life.
Father David Finegan.

Dear All,
So here we are in another Lent. Can I tempt you to try one of our Lentgroups? They happen on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. in Long Meadow,Broad Road, Cotton; Thursday mornings in Old Newton Chapel, beginningat 10.30 a.m. with coffee on offer from 10 a.m.; and Monday mornings at10.15 a.m. in Wickham Skeith Village Hall.
This year we’re following a programme called “Handing On the Torch”– itlooks at what it means to be a Christian and a person of faith in today’sworld, in an increasingly secular society where people live by so manydifferent faiths. I’m writing this in the week when a High Court judge hasruled that it is unlawful for a Council to begin its meetings with prayer, evenif the Council members have voted to do so. Today on the radio a wholerange of people were protesting that they want to be allowed to start theirmeetings with prayer, and if other people don’t want to pray, they don’t haveto join in, or even to be in the room while praying is happening. I do myselfhave a bit of sympathy for the atheists who feel prayers are being forced onthem. In my veggie past (some years ago now!) I belonged to a clergychapter which began each of its monthly meetings by eating a breakfast ofbacon butties. Nobody tried to make me eat the bacon, but everyone elsechomping away did leave me feeling like an outsider. I have to confess thatthe fragrance of that bacon did have its effect… Maybe we need to makeour prayers more fragrant, so that they better express the commitment tothe public good which our humanist Councillors so fully share.
If you don’t think Lent groups should be that heavy, feel free to join theFriday Teatime Group at 4 p.m. in Bacton Church Community Room wherewe’re considering the Gospel according to Winnie-the-Pooh with the aid ofmuffins, crumpets and of course honey.
Yours with love, Liz Varley

FUTUREAlthough nature works 24/7 you can imagine that a facility likeCarters Meadow needs human help if it is to remain accessible andsafe to the public. To that end a group of volunteers assemble at 10o-clock on the first Sunday of each month and get stuck in for about3 hours of very rewarding work and lots of chat. No special skills arerequired just enthusiasm to help the meadow to develop.
If you would like to volunteer or need any information call ChrisTester on 01449 782134. Thank You.

A Return to Everest
Two years ago several of yousponsored my eldest son in hisunsuccessful attempt to climbEverest. In that attempt he got towithin a thousand feet of the summitbefore ill health persuaded him togive up. All sponsored moniescollected went to the charity Feedingthe Children.Since then he has helped hisyounger brother to climb Kilimanjaroand he now hopes to make a secondattempt on Everest in April. As an acclimatisation trip he will beclimbing Kilimanjaro in mid March viathe Western Breech. This will involvecamping overnight in the crater itself.Ian plans to be climbing Everest bythe NE ridge between 1
stApril and
the 8th
June. This is technically amore difficult route but was the routethat Mallory tried in the thirties.Once again Ian is looking forsponsorship with monies this time going to Cancer Research UK.If you would like to sponsor him there are two ways that you can do it.The most direct is to go to http//www.justgiving.com/Ian-Spalding anddonate by credit card or debit card. Just giving automatically claims Gift Aidon all eligible donations, so that the charity gains even more.Alternatively you can give any donations to me and I will forward them on.Terry Spalding 01449 781213

on site acts as an information centre where posters and pamphletshelp you to identify the trees and animals you may see. There isalso a Visitors Book for you to record what happened on your visitand for you to make suggestions as to how your experience couldhave been improved.
TOMORROWThe Carters Meadow Trust is keen to diversify and develop newattractions and in2012, with the help oflocal resident andamateur bee keeperJohn Insley, theyhope to introducesome bee hives. The idea was bornwhen it was notedthat the wild flowerarea of the meadowhad become home toa large area of redclover which apartfrom looking goodproduces very goodquality honey. After a site visit anideal location wassettled upon andsome of the brambleand blackthorn scrubwas cut back from thehedge by PeterGibbs. This providesa protected bay forthe hives location.John and his wife runa small charity and the proceeds of the honey sales will go to thecharity. So if you want honey with ‘low air miles’, in 2012 providingwe get a good summer, Carters Meadow will be the place to be.

CARTERS MEADOW
BACKGROUNDThe Carter family donated the 8 acre meadow tothe village of Cotton about 10 years ago. A trustwas formed and it was decided that the meadowwould provide an ideal site for the creation of asanctuary for wildlife and a tranquil space to beenjoyed by everyone.
A plan was conceived to promote anenvironment where nature was encouraged. Tothis end 450 trees have been planted and apond has been dug and, as a token to thehistory of the area, a wooden henge was built bysectioning a single 140 year old oak tree trunk.
TODAYCarters Meadow is alive with a rich blend of flora and fauna. Thetrees and natural grasses encourage bird and insect life while thepond is home to a range of frogs, newts and toads and a growingnumber of dragon and damsel flies.
An owl nesting boxhas been placedhigh in one of thewell established oaktrees in the originalhedge and naturalhabitats createdwhere it is expectedthat ‘nature’ willmove in and takeover.
The meadow isopen all year round
to everyone and the Trust has positioned three wooden benches andtables to provide ideal local facilities for family picnics. A wooden hut
