MESSAGE FROM THE SOCIETY PRESIDENTThe Society held its annual auction at the February meeting. Although the turnout of members was not especiallylarge, those who came were enthusiastic participants and we raised approximately $670. It was interesting to watchbidders compete for choice lots with particular interest in a delicious home-made cake made by Maria Martins. Therewere a few orchids up for auction and many back issues of AOS magazines along with miscellaneous items fromGeorge Cook's estate. Karim Mattar brought in the wooden bookshelves from our now defunct library and there wasquite a rivalry between two bidders for this. We had a wonderful auction team of volunteers who ran everything veryefficiently. Our auctioneers worked quickly to go through all the lots providing information on all the plants and humouron items that needed a bit of help to coax bids from the crowd. We had several guests who went home with auctiongoodies and lots of orchid reading.

We had a couple join the society who immediately signed up to volunteer at the show as clerks and will possibly helpin other areas. The Amica retirement residence brought plates of very nice pastries for everyone to enjoy. Our sincerethanks and heartfelt appreciation for your thoughtfulness. Barbara had additional treats for members in the hospitalityarea. The goodies contributed to everyone having a very pleasant meeting.

Although the show table wasn't loaded with orchids...there was a good variety, thanks to Angèle, and her Dendrobiumkingianum perfumed the whole room!

Here are a few pictures taken by Arlene Lang of the auction activities. There are more pictures further on in Spike.

Above, from left: Picture of Karim Mattar having a close look at the many items on our auction table donated bySociety members; Rick Sobkowicz, one of our two auctioneers, explaining to everyone how the auction will proceedand displaying a bid card that everyone needs to have if they wish to bid on items; and, an absolutely beautiful anddelicious cake made by Maria Martins and donated to the auction. This cake was made from scratch with realwhipped cream. The successful bidder on this item was your Society President. (Editor’s note: Jean graciouslyshared a giant portion of this cake with all the members who attended the Board meeting that was held a few daysfollowing the February meeting. All who had a taste of this cake will attest that it was a “TWO THUMBS UP” work oflove. Thank you, Maria!!!

A big THANK YOU to everyone for your donations, our volunteers for their hard work, our auction participants, andmembers who contributed in other ways.

Happy growing,

Jean Hollebone

NEW VENDOR COMING TO OTTAWA ORCHID SHOW

From: Carri Raven [mailto:[email protected]]Sent: February-02-14 5:52 PMTo: Rick SobkowiczCc: [email protected]: Ottawa Orchid Show

Hi Rick,

Glen Decker has passed your name on to me so I could contact you about participating as a vendor at your 2014Ottawa Orchid Show. As Glen may have told you, I specialize in your not-so-ordinary Phalaenopsis – I purposelychoose not to carry or sell what we always see at the box stores, the more common mericlones that we see over andover again from Home Depot to Costco to Trader Joe’s.

My particular focus is on more rare species of Phals, multi-floral miniatures from the newest lines of breeding, andcolorful (and often fragrant) novelty hybrids and harlequins – I also carry both limited run mericlones of the above aswell as one-of-a-kind first bloom seedlings that I’ve been growing from flask – all of which I purchase from some of thetop nurseries and young hybridizers in Taiwan every spring when I travel there to AOS judge their March TIOS Showin Taiwan. As a result, I’m able to obtain hybrids that we’ll never see in the US or Canada since they’re in very limitedmericlone test runs that are never produced in quantity (the reason being that no wholesale nursery in the US isinterested in purchasing and re-selling them – they’re too unique).

The name of my business is the orchidPhile based in Connecticut – and you’re welcome to google either the businessname or my name for an idea of what my business is all about. I do all the major shows in the mid-Atlantic and NewEngland states every year in addition to speaking to various orchid societies in the area on the newest directions inPhalaenopsis hybridizing.

I was also a Founding Member and President of the International Phalaenopsis Alliance (also having been First VP,Secretary and currently Regional Director for New England)…and have been focused on Phalaenopsis since 1979,having started my orchid business in 1985.

Although I haven’t yet had the time to put together my website, I do have a commercial Facebook page which will giveyou an idea of some of the kinds of Phalaenopsis I grow & offer for sale. The direct link is:www.facebook.com/orchidphile .

SOCIETY’S ANNUAL AUCTIONAs mentioned earlier, we had a modest but successful auction. The Society was successful in raising $670.00. Thesefunds will be used to support the two A.O.S. judging centers (one in Montreal and the other in Toronto). The balanceof the funds will be used to support our numerous Society activities.

Our Auction team hard at work (all pictures taken by Arlene Lang):

Above, from left: Our Co-Auctioneer, Marilyn Light, in action describing one of the auction plants to be offered. Marilynwas very kind to explain the cultural requirements of many of the plants up for auction. In the next image, we haveDiane Aubrey who is holding up one of the items that is being auctioned. During the auction, Diane held up the itemsbeing auctioned for everyone to see and delivered items to the successful bidders. Diane has been helping out withthe auction for many years. She and her volunteers make up the bid cards, the sign-up sheets for the bidders, ensurethere is an auction number on each item, and keep track of everything. Seated behind Diane are the rest of Diane’svolunteers team. From left in the orange sweater is Marie-Anne Délye-Payette, Femmy Mes, and Nancy Beaudry. These ladies spread out all the items on the auction tables for everyone to view, tagged every item for identification, kept track of what was sold and to whom, prepared sale slips on everything sold, and collected the money from everysuccessful bidder. They make the auction proceed very smoothly.

Above from left: Auction in progress with Rick Sobkowicz holding up an item going to the highest bidder. We had asmall turnout. There were only approximately 31 people who signed in to bid. It was a great and enthusiastic group.Another photo of Marie-Anne Délye-Payette, Femmy Mes, and Nancy Beaudry. Diane and these three ladies are agreat pleasure to work with and everything ran so smoothly under their care. Sadly, this was Marie-Anne’s last yearwith us as she is moving to Montreal to be closer to her daughter. We will miss you very much, Marie-Anne. Sincerethanks for everything and we wish you many happy years ahead! We would like to extend a special thanks to DianeAubrey’s husband who very kindly drove hastily to our meeting with Diane’s bag of auction material. In the hustle andbustle of getting everything together and coming to the meeting, Diane’s bag was inadvertently overlooked requiringMonsieur Aubrey to come to the rescue.

GIFT OF APPRECIATIONShown below is a surprised Dave Cooper, our Show Chairman of many years, who received an unexpected gift ofappreciation for his hard work on behalf of the Society with our annual show. As most members know by now, we lostthe use of the Nepean Sportsplex for our annual show this year. The curling rink at the Nepean Sportsplex that we

12

have used for many years was rented out to another organization that needed the curling rink for their 3 day event. There was a scramble to find an alternate location. City officials found us the Kanata Recreation Complex (KRC) inthe west end of Ottawa. The facility is just south of the Terry Fox Queensway ramp. Being a new location for us, therehas been a lot of activity going back and forth to assess the facility and identify our needs. Dave, with his co-chairJanet Johns, has been critical in keeping everything running smoothly during our talks and meetings with different cityofficials, the folks at the Kanata Recreation Complex, and show committee members. Dave has made out a draft floordesign for our show which is needed by the KRC people to know where things go, where electrical cables need to belaid, etcetera. The floor design is also used by the company we use to provide us with the tables set out for ourexhibits and vendors.

Dave is presented with a beautiful vase by BarbaraWysocka for his contribution. It is a modest but genuinetoken of our collective appreciation for everything thatDave has and continues to do for the Society, whether itis show business or the Society’s web site (Dave is ourWeb Master). His calming manner, willingness to helpwherever he can, and leadership has been aninspiration. Thank you, Dave.

If you are looking forsomething in particular, you are urged to contact the vendors coming to our show to see if they have what you want.

We are awaiting confirmation from five other vendors who have been invited but have not yet replied. If attending, wewill amend our information on the web site as quickly as this can be done.

ANNUAL SHOW – CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

This month and up to the weekend of our show, we will be seeking volunteers to help with our show. Volunteers arestill needed to assist with the show on Friday (setting up) and during the weekend of the show. If you can help, pleasedo sign up on the volunteer sheets that will be on hand at the March meeting. You need not know anything aboutorchids and orchid growing to help in many of the positions involved. It’s a great way to support the Society, get tomeet and know Society members, and share our interest with the thousands of folks coming to our show. Everyonehelping out with the show is admitted into the show free of charge. There are other benefits in helping out but you willneed to volunteer to find out what these benefits are.

Jane Logan who is looking after the Art Gallery is especially in need of helpers to set up the Art Gallery on Friday, hang paintings and place other works on tables and easels.

March 2014

From the Desk of Sandra Tillisch SvobodaJoin us for an AOS members-only Webinar on March 17From 8-9pm EDT, Ron McHatton will present a talk on the various kinds of pests that can affect our orchidcollections and how to manage them.No orchid grower is completely immune from the introduction of pests and diseases to their collection. Thismeans that sooner or later we are all going to be faced with having to go to battle on some level with the forces ofnature that have decided to feast on our plants. Effective pest management isn't easy and it isn't fast and most ofus try our hardest to get it over quickly. The result is often expressed by that phrase "scale (or mealybug or ?)are impossible to control." The keys to effective pest management is to understand the pest you are fighting andto even better understand the pest management scheme you have decided to use. Orchids 101 - Taking Orchids to the ShowMarch 16, 2014

Marilyn H. S. Light

Exhibitors have a variety of goals in mind when they show an orchid. Some wish to proudly show their very first orchid. Rosettes, ribbons, trophies and maybe an award or two are a definite lure for some exhibitors while others simply wish to assist their clubby supplying additional plants for a larger exhibit. Maybe they will win a ribbon and maybe not but they will have succeeded inblooming what they once only dreamed of – and get a chance to show those precious blooms to hundreds of visitors! It is in thebest interest of the exhibitor to groom plants before the show so that they show their orchid to its best advantage.

Preparing the plant

1- The process of showing orchids begins long before the show date. Protect potential show plants from conditions that damagefoliage and new growths.

2 - Divide and repot orchids in their season but well before a show so that they will be securely rooted in their containers.

3 - Control pests, water and fertilize with care, and avoid spraying with hard water or products that leave an unsightly residue.

4 - While grooming is an on-going task, it is worth double checking before a show that all debris, dead foliage, dried backbulbs, and recently fallen blooms have been removed. The upper surface of each leaf can be wiped with a clean damp paper towel.Change towels between plants. Do not use shine products to clean leaves.

5 - Do your fellow exhibitors a favour by leaving infested plants at home. Hosing off aphids or hand removing obviousmealybugs as a quick fix inevitably leaves a few hitchhikers that could spread to other plants at a show.

Training the inflorescence before floweringThe best time to stake an inflorescence is when it is still young and flexible. Use a long enough stake to support what is expectedto develop. Gently train a developing inflorescence by securing it along its length as it elongates using twists of waxed floristtape. During the entire training process until flowering, keep the plant in the same position relative to the direction of light.

Care of the flowersProtect developing buds from damage by paying close attention to culture. Maintain constant growing conditions as abruptchanges can lead to bud drop. Handle blooming plants with care.

Pests and DiseasesPests and diseases have no business at a show but that does not mean that they will not be present. Yellow flowers are a magnetfor aphids that will spread to all nearby yellow blooms if an infested plant is in the show. Control pests well before the showotherwise leave the monsters at home.

TransportPlanning is critical to success. When selecting plants, consider how they can be packed and how those containers can fit in yourvehicle. Consider the effect of too much heat from the sun or car heater, the chance of sunburn, freezing because of proximity toan uninsulated wall or chill because of the air conditioning.

At the showLocate your assigned exhibit area then get assistance to transport the plants to that area. Move carefully and deliberatelyespecially with tall or ungainly specimens. Sudden and expressive hand movements have been known to knock off a flower ortwo! Groom again if needed, remove any travelling supports, and table your blooming beauties. Sit back and enjoy the show andthe culmination of months of preparation. Perhaps this time it will be you that receives ribbons. Good luck!
