March 2015 Lent is well under way. I hope you are all finding it a time of spiritual renewal. The meatless Fridays remind me of pre-Vatican days, when every Friday, not just during Lent, was a time to have peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, and perhaps a cheese pizza on date night. My hometown parish didn’t do fish fries or soup suppers, so my memories are of things like giving up candy or pop for Lent. My, how times have changed, hopefully for the better! We have now so many wonderful resources to help us on our Lenten Journey. For example, the parish provides the little black books of daily meditations. Every Friday during Lent except Good Friday, there are vespers and Stations of the Cross, plus community soup suppers or fish fries. Each parish also has a rec- onciliation service, with many priests to make it more convenient. Another blessing is the availability of daily Mass, and additional devotional resources on the Internet. So the only thing keeping us from a holy Lenten season is ourselves. We just have to put aside some of the many, many distractions which, like static, keep us from focusing on the big picture of eternity. I don’t know about you, but I find it very diffi- cult, since life doesn’t stop and the world keeps competing for my attention. Let’s try to stop each day and find a quiet time and place to be with God. When you’re praying, don’t forget your brother knights, family members, and others on our prayer list. Perhaps pick one person or two to keep in your daily intentions. If we all did that, imagine the good that could come from it! Especially this month remember the souls of our faithful departed, among whom we just numbered Brothers John Justen and Bill Zint. May they rejoice in the presence of the Lord, and may their families and friends be consoled by God’s grace and peace. Another thing to remember during Lent is the 40 Days for Life prayer vigil. From Ash Wednesday until Palm Sunday volunteers brave the weather to give witness for the sanctity of life, and to pray for those who are considering abortion at the Planned Parenthood clinic. Can you spare an hour for this most important cause? Without the right to live, no other rights matter, do they? (https://40daysforlife.com/local- campaigns/colorado-springs/ ) One last thing. Palm Sunday just happens to fall on the 5 th Sunday of March. That means we will cele- brate Corporate Communion at the 7:45 Mass on March 29th. If you are not obligated to be at a different Mass, please join us to worship as a group and follow up with fellowship at breakfast. 4 th Degree Sir Knights with regalia are asked to please participate in an Honor Guard. Worship with your Brothers and their families would be a great prelude to Holy Week, don’t you think? Many Blessings, Ron Krom

March 2015

Lent is well under way. I hope you are all finding it a time of spiritual renewal. The meatless Fridays

remind me of pre-Vatican days, when every Friday, not just during Lent, was a time to have peanut butter

sandwiches for lunch, and perhaps a cheese pizza on date night. My hometown parish didn’t do fish fries

or soup suppers, so my memories are of things like giving up candy or pop for Lent. My, how times have

changed, hopefully for the better!

We have now so many wonderful resources to help us on our Lenten Journey. For example, the parish

provides the little black books of daily meditations. Every Friday during Lent except Good Friday, there are

vespers and Stations of the Cross, plus community soup suppers or fish fries. Each parish also has a rec-

onciliation service, with many priests to make it more convenient. Another blessing is the availability of

daily Mass, and additional devotional resources on the Internet. So the only thing keeping us from a holy

Lenten season is ourselves. We just have to put aside some of the many, many distractions which, like

static, keep us from focusing on the big picture of eternity. I don’t know about you, but I find it very diffi-

cult, since life doesn’t stop and the world keeps competing for my attention. Let’s try to stop each day and

find a quiet time and place to be with God.

When you’re praying, don’t forget your brother knights, family members, and others on our prayer list.

Perhaps pick one person or two to keep in your daily intentions. If we all did that, imagine the good that

could come from it! Especially this month remember the souls of our faithful departed, among whom we

just numbered Brothers John Justen and Bill Zint. May they rejoice in the presence of the Lord, and may

their families and friends be consoled by God’s grace and peace.

Another thing to remember during Lent is the 40 Days for Life prayer vigil. From Ash Wednesday until

Palm Sunday volunteers brave the weather to give witness for the sanctity of life, and to pray for those who

are considering abortion at the Planned Parenthood clinic. Can you spare an hour for this most important

cause? Without the right to live, no other rights matter, do they? (https://40daysforlife.com/local-

campaigns/colorado-springs/)

One last thing. Palm Sunday just happens to fall on the 5th Sunday of March. That means we will cele-

brate Corporate Communion at the 7:45 Mass on March 29th. If you are not obligated to be at a different

Mass, please join us to worship as a group and follow up with fellowship at breakfast. 4th Degree Sir

Knights with regalia are asked to please participate in an Honor Guard. Worship with your Brothers and

their families would be a great prelude to Holy Week, don’t you think?

Many Blessings,

Ron Krom

An Update on King Soopers Gift Cards Herman Jasper

Gift Card Coordinator

The monthly Statement for King Soopers Gift Cards was just received. From

January 25 to February 21 a total of $10,194.86 was loaded into our King Soopers

Gift Cards. This results in $509.74 income for our Council and brings us close to

$5000.00 from this fundraiser so far this year.

Many thanks for your active participation and making this a success. Should you

not be an active user of a King Soopers Gift Card for purchasing Groceries or fuel, I

invite you to take another look at this easy way of helping your Council in its good

works. It is sooo easy! And there is no additional cost for purchases. Certainly this program with Council 9993 is

not for every Knight. But if you can participate, please join in.

Here is a bit a trivia. There are 30 Knights, Auxiliary members, and families that have added from $1000 to

$4000 to a gift cards since we began. By increasing the number of members that are active users of a gift card,

we will see our income grow significantly.

Again, many thanks. If you need a card (or two) give me a call (590-9303) or send an e-mail.

FISH FRIES ARE COMING – VERY SOON! By Ron Krom

It’s no secret when we will have our fish fries, is it? It’s been in the parish bulletin

and on the parish calendar. Most of you should have received an email asking for

help – if not, then we don’t have your correct email address. But here is a reminder to

put on your calendar, refrigerator, smartphone, or wherever. We want to see you at

church, at the fish fry, on Friday March 13 and Friday March 20.

And we know many of you enjoy preparing the Lenten dinner for our St. Patrick

family – those golden fried or baked fish, crisp tater tots, melted grill cheese, and cole

slaw. Yes we have fun doing the fixing as well as the eating, and we still have room

on the roster for you. We need to get the worker list firmed up and then we know

we’ll have a successful event. And we are really, really, really looking forward to doing

all our cooking indoors this year. It might be snowing and cold outdoors, but we have a new commercial deep fryer

in the kitchen, ready for its maiden voyage. I know some of you are anxious to try that out!

So here’s what you do. Decide which day you can help, or both. We need men at:

Then notify Jim Wermers ([email protected]) what days and times you want to pitch in. If you want to learn how to

use the deep fryer, you should try the first shift, but we only have room for a few. We will keep updating the sign-up

and sending it out, so that everyone knows what slots are still open. Food tastes best when you put the love in it,

so come out and join in the fun!

WHAT DO WE REALLY BELIEVE ABOUT ABORTION? BY Ron Krom

FACT: It has been 42 years since the Roe V. Wade Supreme Court Decision. FACT:

Since then millions of babies have been killed by abortion on demand. FACT: Pro-

abortionists use slogans like “My body, my choice.” When we know the baby is NOT

part of the mother’s body. We know that the baby’s DNA is uniquely different from

both mother and father. FACT: Pro-abortionists fight every attempt to attribute per-

sonhood to unborn babies, but we know babies are just immature human beings.

This might lead one to think that the majority of Americans think abortion on demand is a good thing, or at least

OK. Well, according to a Knights of Columbus Marist poll, that is NOT a fact. 84% of those surveyed would restrict

abortion to the first 3 months of pregnancy at most. 84% says that laws can protect the well-being of mother and

unborn child. And the majority (60% to 38%) say abortion is morally wrong. Yet 69% of those surveyed said they

were “pro-choice.”!

Page 4: March 2015 - Knights of Columbus 893kofcknights.org/Councils/Council_9993_Mar_2015_Newsletter.pdf · March 2015 Lent is well under ... just numbered Brothers John Justen and Bill

WHAT DO WE REALLY BELIEVE ABOUT ABORTION? (cont) BY Ron Krom

Does this sound strange or inconsistent? I think it shows that the average American knows that abortion is

an act against nature. Mothers are meant to bear and nurture their young. And we know that, even though we let

government or abortion activists continue to lie about it.

Some more facts discovered by the survey:

74 percent of those surveyed support parental notification before a minor can get an abortion;

68 percent oppose taxpayer funding of abortion;

Most Americans see abortion as harmful to women, not helpful;

Most Americans think medical professionals should be able to refuse to participate in abortions.

So here is a question I hope you can answer – why are public policies and what is actually happening – why

aren’t they aligned with what people think is right? What do you call it when we know something is wrong and do it

anyway? Isn’t that sin? And what does sin lead to, but death? If there is too much death in our culture, and if life

seems too cheap, could it be that abortion has something to do with it?

Ladies Auxiliary Korner By Fran Krom

The Ladies Auxiliary of St. Patrick Church is a member auxiliary of the State Ladies Auxiliary. The State organization was char-

tered in July of 1976. For the first two years after the charter, Anna Mary McKinney served as the liaison to the Knights of

Columbus. She later served as the first president of the organization in 1978. The State Ladies Auxiliary funds an annual

scholarship named for Anna Mary McKinney. The scholarship is supported through ticket sales for gift baskets awarded at the

Ladies Luncheons at the State Convention. This year, our Ladies Auxiliary will be providing a special gift basket as a part of

the fundraising for the scholarship drive.

Our Auxiliary selected Mary Ann Lamecker as our Lady of the Year for 2015. The criteria for consideration as Lady of the Year

include contributions to the Parish, our Auxiliary, and the Community. In addition, the Lady of the Year demonstrates true

Catholic values and lives the faith in a way that is visible to others. Mary Ann is so deserving of this honor. In her duties with

St. Patrick Church and as a member of the Auxiliary, she gives so much of herself. We know that her faith and love for Christ

has sustained her through the difficult circumstances of being widowed. Her smile is infectious to others. Her sweet and gen-

tle demeanor reflects genuine humility. She is truly the Woman of Worth who Scripture describes.

The Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting the Spring Fashion Show on May 16 at Holy Apostles Church. Tickets will be available prior

to the event and the cost is $20.

The next meeting for the Auxiliary is March 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Bonzel Hall. Our guest speaker for the meeting is a repre-

sentative from Sweet Dreams Colorado. The organization provides pajamas for youth who are placed in protective environ-

ments and foster care. Sweet Dreams received pajamas from the members of Council 9993 who attended the Christmas

party in December. Following our meeting, the Ladies will be serving some tasty foods during the Social Hour.

Carlton “Greer” Bailey

February 2015 Knight of the Month

In February, 2010, Brother Carlton, “Greer” Bailey was recognized at Knight

of the Month. Now, five years later, Brother Greer has again earned recognition

as Knight of the Month.

Brother Greer continues to stand out as a Knight, and for many of the same

contributions. He has a commendable record of service to Council 9993, its

members, and its projects.

Brother Greer is the engine that makes our monthly Newcomers Pancake

Breakfast “go!” His many contributions include shopping for the needed food

and supplies, contacting members to schedule volunteers for the two shifts,

and serving as shift coordinator. His was a vital role in getting the parish

kitchen renovation up and implemented during the past several months.

These contributions he makes with his ever-present large smile.

Other Council projects find their way onto his schedule. These include help-

ing with the USAFA parking fundraiser and the Lenten fish fry. He jumped on

board with the King Soopers Gift Cards.

Brother Greer is a 3rd Degree Knight, having joined the Council in December,

2000. He and his wife, Rosemary, have three children. He is a retired Army

veteran (Lt. Col.).

Thank you, Greer, for your presence in our Council, and your service!

By Ron Krom

February 2015 marks the loss of two faithful Sir Knights, William (Bill) Zint and John Jus-

ten. Bill (1936 – 2015) was a retired Air Force veteran, and a long-time member of our

Council 9993. He served many ways, and was named Knight of the Month in June 2002. He

was Grand Knight from 2004 to 2006, and was a charter member of St. Patrick Assembly

3049. He is remembered for his ready wit and gentlemanly manner. Bill joined the order in

November 1996, progressed up through the 4th Degree, and served for 18 years, up to the

time of his death. Bill lost his wife Jean in 2013 and moved to California to be nearer his

family. Those who knew him will greatly miss him.

John Justen (1943-2015) was a new transplant to Colorado

Springs and St. Patrick. He joined the Knights in October 2000 in

the Denver area. He progressed up through the 4th Degree and was

very active until experiencing health challenges. John and his son Jake both transferred to

St. Patrick Council 9993 and Assembly 3049 in January last year. As a military veteran and

14-year Knight, we are grateful for his contributions.

Both Bill and John will be enrolled in the Colorado State Perpetual Memorial Soci-

ety. Members will have their names recorded on a plaque displayed each year at the State

K of C convention, and also recorded on the State Honor Roll. Each year, about 100

Masses are said for the members of the memorial. Bill and John will also be named at the

State Convention Memorial Mass. Let us continually remember and pray for our Departed

Brothers.

The Bottom Line

"$upporting Our Good Works "

What follows is a brief summary of the financial activities associated with our 3rd Degree Council [9993]

and 4th Degree Assembly [3049].

Let’s start with ongoing activities within the Council. Thanks to your quick response, the Council has al-

ready received $3,464 of the expected ~5,000 in annual dues. Remember, your dues go to pay for the

daily operation of the Council, including postage, per capita for State and Supreme, advertising, and name

badges. With your dues payment comes the ability to donate 100% of our fundraising efforts to char-

ity. The February breakfast was a big success, grossing $683.00 in income at an expense of

$383.45. Thank you very much to the great crew of guys who make that happen every month, it is a won-

derful service to our Parish community. The dedication of King Soopers and Shop with Scrip shoppers has

led to $4,287.64 in fundraising via our Neighborhood gift card and Scrip programs so far this Fraternal Year

(since Jul). See the website or Brother Herman for more information regarding this NO COST fundraising

effort which goes directly to helping charities all along the Front Range. Lastly, the Council paid $100 to

both Life Network and St. Patrick’s for our 2 monthly donations.

This was another big month for the Council’s Fall fundraising. Council 9993, last month, passed on

$2,785.84 to KofC State Charities in support of the mentally handicapped drive. A large fraction of that

money will come back to the three charities identified by the council to help those in need, close to

home. In order to help make an even $1000 to each of those charities, Council 9993 wrote three checks of

$303.64 each to: Zach’s Place, Roundup Fellowship, and CS Therapeutic Riding Center. Lastly, Council

9993 donated $346.50 to the Altar Server ministry here at St. Patrick’s to help purchase their pins & me-

dallions.

Assembly 3049 also had a busy month with the exemplification of our Deacons at St. Patrick. The Assem-

bly paid $210 to the District Master for the cost of the exemplification. Also, as part of the Assembly’s dedi-

cation to helping brother Sir Knight’s participate in fraternal functions, Assembly 3049 has fronted the

money for two sets of Regalia, totaling $755.25, which will be repaid by the two purchasing Knights as part

of a monthly payment plan.

If anyone would like more information on the financial status of the Council or the Assembly, please stop by

any regular business meeting or feel free to contact me directly.

Faithfully yours,

Taylor Lilly

Faithful Friar Mike’s Reflection

During Lent we think often of suffering. So what is suffering as seen from a Catho-

lic's eyes....

It is like the child who walks through a dark passage holding his father's hand - we

know that our Father can handle the darkness and lead us through it.

The true Catholic can face suffering, embrace it, work through it, and transform it,

and help others do the same - if we live it as Christ teaches us to, by leaning on his

grace.

Our faith is like an amoeba.

It enables us to wrap our hearts around even the bitterest pains of life, the

heaviest crosses, and absorb them, transforming them into holiness and

wisdom.

This is why we decorate our crosses and crucifixes with gold, silver, and precious gems.

With Christ, the pains and sorrows of life become valuable opportunities, springboards for ascending the

heights of spiritual maturity.

God chose to save us through life's sorrows, not from them - and so, there is no reason to fear them.

Pope Benedict explains this beautifully in his encyclical letter on hope:

...We can try to limit suffering, to fight against it, but we cannot eliminate it.

It is when we attempt to avoid suffering by withdrawing from anything that might involve hurt, when we try

to spare ourselves the effort and pain of pursuing truth, love, and goodness, that we drift into a life of emp-

tiness,

in which there may be almost no pain, but the dark sensation of meaninglessness and abandonment is all

the greater.

It is not by sidestepping or fleeing from suffering that we are healed, but rather by our capacity for accept-

ing it, maturing through it and finding meaning through union with Christ, who suffered with infinite love. ...

The true measure of humanity is essentially determined in relationship to suffering and to the sufferer. This

holds true both for the individual and for society.

A society unable to accept its suffering members and incapable of helping to share their suffering and to

bear it inwardly through "com-passion" is a cruel and inhuman society.

Pope Benedict XVI, Spe salvi, #s 37-38
