DURBIN CROSSING
POND PRESS Happy March Durbin Crossing residents! It looks like summer is here to stay after a re-grettably short and particularly warm winter. The lawns in our area are still showing some of their winter brown, but that will soon change with the warmth, the rain, and a little TLC. Some things to remember when you fertilize your yards in terms of how it may affect the ponds near your homes and roads:
Fertilizers that make our yards green contain the same nutrients that pond weeds and algae need to grow. Excessively high pond nutrient levels, in particular nitrates and phosphates, are one of the main causes of large and long-lasting algae blooms in ponds. Even if you don’t live on a pond, chances are that the storm drain on the road near your house leads to a pond in the Durbin Crossing area.
Most of Florida has very porous soil, that is relatively high is sand and low in organic matter; make sure to follow instructions on your fertilizer bags to make sure you don’t over fertilize your lawns. Turf can only take in so many nutrients at one time, so a lot of that unused fertilizer leeches through the soil after rain or irrigation, and ends up in the groundwater. Florida soil is also naturally high in phosphorus, so a high phosphorus fertilizer may not be necessary to keep your lawn healthy. You can obtain soil tests from the St Johns County Extension Office to see what nutrients are already present in the soil in your area, to better determine what fertilizer is best for you.
Make sure to use a blower or broom to sweep any fertilizer back into your lawn that may have ended up on your driveway or road; this fertilizer ends up being washed directly into the storm drains and from there, into the ponds. If you live on a pond please try not to fertilize within 20 feet of the ponds edge, especially if there is adown-hill slope to the pond.
These are only a few things that you can do to help keep excess nutrients out of the groundwater and ponds in your area. We like green lawn, not green ponds!
Kindest regards,
Leslie F. Pragasam Sales Manager/Biologist / NE Florida region / Aquatic Systems, Inc.
