MONTHLY NEWSLETTER ISSUE No 3 |March 2018 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Hi everyone, just a quick brief on the happenings of the club A huge thank you to all who attended the annual Prawn ’n’ Oyster day. It was a marvellous event, despite the oppressive heat on the day. The day was well attended with over 170 people enjoying the afternoon with lovely food and cold beverages. I’d like to thank our Federal member of Parliament Matt Thistlethwaite, Deputy Mayor Alex Luxford and RCC councillors Anthony Andrews, Dylan Parker and Danny Said for their attendance and support. Thanks to Kyle Maguire for his great guitar playing and singing. A special mention to Ginelle Kelly and Jodie Bentley for all their hard work in securing the many gifts that were raffled and auctioned on the day. I’d also like to thank the many people who helped out with food preparation, decorating and setting up tables, chairs & tents for the day for the day. I want to acknowledge Bob Tate from Glasshouse Hotel, The Seals Board, Matraville Hotel and Brendan & Troy from “the Bay Hotel’ for their generosity in donating kegs for the event, also the local business’s that support our day and help in every way they can. The BOM has actively been pursuing insurance over- payments from Allianz for the past eight months, Im pleased to announce that we have achieved a modest refund in the vicinity of $27,000.00 on past premiums the club has paid. This refund was helped along by our insurance broker and advice from RCC properties department. Please be assured MSLSC has all its required insurances and the building is well insured by us and RCC. There is the small opportunity to keep pursing the insurer for further refunds and we will be ensuring all prospective avenues are investigated. The building sub-committee has had its initial meeting and some great design concepts were thrown up for discussion. There is a basic idea of which direction the club should be headed and this was discussed in detail. Over the ensuing months design concepts will be present to the general membership for discussion and feed back as to what is the best way to proceed with any proposed building works. The painting project continues after he Easter/ school holiday vacation period. The work will commence on the northern & southern side of the building where works can be reached without the aid of mechanical platforms. There was also some remedial work carried out to the cement rendering that in certain areas was in need of immediate action both for waterproofing issues and prospective paint works. The gym equipment is still on track to leave the supplier on the 25th March. It will take 3-4 weeks to be shipped and cleared through customs by the freight forwarder. Please keep this in mind as there will be a time when some the old equipment will have to be removed from the gym. Members will have first priority to an equipment becoming redundant then friends, clubs etc will have next opportunity. If you have anything in particular you would like to take, please see a BOM member and discuss what is available. In order to get the gym equipment up and running we will require a ‘working bee’ to unload the container, lay the new floor and set up the new equipment. Members will be notified in the near future. Good Luck to all the competitors, officials, Mum’s & Dad’s who are heading to Perth for the 2018 Aussie Titles. I know how hard you have all trained this season and under the expert guidance of Lisa, Cuz, Joe, AJ, Brodie and Schotty you all have a good shot of doing your best….. GO HARD MAROUBRA

Last patrols of the season are on 29th April, so a month to go. Please ensure all your hours are up to scratch as time will come around fast. Easter is the last weekend of longer patrol hours. Shorter patrols start after April 1st.

Congratulations to Phil Carter and all the Nippers Team on another successful season of Nippers events. With over 450 Junior members, it’s a week in week out toil to keep it all up and running smoothly. From what I can see, the nippers retention is coming along nicely and I can foresee some future champions proudly wearing the mighty red & blue cap into competition. A big thank you to all the age mangers, support crew and helpers who assist through out the year. I want to say a special thanks to Irene, Jimmy & Anthony who continue to cook up the best Sunday morning BBQ on the planet. Congratulations to Tony & Yasmine Grivell in fine tuning the latest SRC crew through to passing their exams. Look forward to seeing you all patrolling the beaches this season and next summer.

Yours sincerely,

Danny Donohoe Maroubra SLSC President

PILOT PROGRAM FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS On Saturday 24th March, the MSLSC education team hosted around 70 UNSW international students and conducted a new pilot program aimed at teaching surf awareness and safety.

The day was very successful and received lots of a positive feedback from the students. It consisted of basic surf skills/awareness, First Aid/CPR, rescue demonstrations as well as a tour of the beach and local area. A special thanks goes out to Tony Grivell for running the session, Paul O’Donohue and Yasmin Grivell for organising as well as Linda Hession, Frankie Bryant, Brett Flanagan, Virginia De Lucia, Jasmine Georgas, Meghan Still, Alex Monteverde, Farzad Blue and many others for all their support and help.

The lessons learned will be vital in ensuring they have both a fun and safe time at the beach.

GOLD TO U/19 BOATIES MSLSC’s U/19 Female Boat Crew (Sealette’s) were chosen as the Sydney branch team for the NSW inter-branch championships held at Collaroy.

The day was extremely successful with the girls taking home GOLD in their division. Our U/23 boys also got a call up as the A reserves didn't front to race. They raced well gaining valuable points whilst up a division.

Congratulations to Cliff and both crews, what a fantastic achievement !

DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS PHOTO ? The photo below was found in Tascott, NSW, recently on a pile for council cleanup. The finder, Peter Fisher, contacted us and is sending back the original copy. What an amazing piece of club history. Does anyone recognise anyone? And just who is the woman in the middle?

Suggestions to [email protected]. We'll be trying to work it out once we get our hands on it.
