BUSINESS START-UPS

THE PITCH"Hello there! My name is Kayley and I am a local resident of Stouffville, Ontario. I am so excited about starting my business and having an opportunity to prepare meals for the community.

As a busy parent myself, I understand the time constraints that life can bring, whether it is long hours at work, rushing kids around to all their activities or worry about how to fit in a healthy meal for the family. So, I am offering meals that would be individual and/or family size, using fresh and wholesome ingredients, when available, and also meat and poultry that is naturally sourced and traditionally raised.

All of my meals are prepared in a certified inspected commercial kitchen. I also have my Food Handlers certificate, which is required by law. Lastly, I love to cook and grew up around a long line of proud cooks and chefs.

I have now opened up a new sector of my business. I am offering catering services to everyone in York Region, I am including Ajax and Pickering as well.

If you are celebrating a special occasion such as a baby shower, bridal shower, anniversary, birthday, funeral, celebration of life or just want to throw a party, let me relieve some of your stress that comes with planning such an important event."

THE PLANOn left is Kayley Pembleton’s pitch. Kayley spent much of the last year developing her business and marketing plan. We met over a coffee. At first, she is reserved and a bit nervous, because new business starts slow, and risk has become a part of her everyday world. She relaxes once we start talking.

We start out by talking formally about the business, but by the end of the interview, I'd say that Kayley is a mom first, entrepreneur second.

Kayley has been through a lot, and has ensured the survival of both her and her daughter. She has worked hard, changed positions, and moved as needed. Survival instinct is certainly the first trait required by a business start-up. Kayley is in good company.

Second, organization and planning are a must. I have seen far too many start-ups close because they had no business plan, no marketing plan, and nothing unique to offer. Simply re-opening an existing restaurant will not breed longevity.

Kayley is determined to do it right. She met with the York Small Business Enterprise Cen-tre to learn about business taxes and regis-tration, she met with York Health to delve into compliance and health regulations, and she has acquired training and certifications. In a determined fashion, she figured out the rules, one long and winding step at a time.

Seeing the path forward, Kayley crafted her menu and a gorgeous website. In a nutshell, she wants to deliver wholesome fully prepared meals, ready-to-heat, that are pre-ordered, one or ten at a time, with no-memberships or commitments - other than ordering by end of Wednesday for the next week.

She figures that there are enough seniors that have lost their desire to cook, and enough young families that need a break occasionally, to merit this business start-up. She delivers to Ballantrae, Stouffville and North Markham; fees inclusive of delivery.

We think Kayley is on the right track and has done her homework. It is for you to judge. See www.ingoodtastemeals.ca.

BEACON HILL FAMILY PRACTICEDr. Efosa Igbinovia MD, CCFP is a family physician. He and his wife, Joy Igbinovia, have opened a new family clinic in Stouffville named Beacon Hill Family Practice (BHFP) at 175 Mostar Street. 175 Mostar is where the Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library was located for the past year.

The clinic is sizable, including six consulting rooms and two doctor's offices. While Dr. Efosa has started consulting with new patients, Joy is busy with administration.

"Opening makes us excited," says Dr. Efosa, "we look forward to meeting people and being a part of a growing community."

Dr. Efosa was involved in a group practice in southeast Saskatchewan for the past 3 years. They have friends back here in Ontario who had suggested that they open a practice in Ontario - "Try Stouffville they said, we hear that they are short on physicians."

Dr. Efosa and Joy are originally from Nigeria. Their English is impeccable. "English is the official language, and the business language of the country," he said. Dr. Efosa and Dr. Joy are both Certificants of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP).

He looks forward to practicing the full scope of family medicine, including working with the elderly and children, and really everyone. "The bedrock of family practise is continuity, seeing patients over years and being part of their history," he said.

New patients and walk-in patients are welcome to Beacon Hill Family Practice (BHFP). They will also offer immunization, a specialty in travel, and flu shots. Call for an appointment at 905-591-5977, or drop in.

The renovation and expansion of the library at 2 Park Drive will result in a facility that is double the size of the original library. Residents will be able to take advantage of an outdoor courtyard for relaxing, reading, and working. The outdoor courtyard will be a gathering place for meeting up with friends and relaxing in the warm weather.

The new Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library facility will be the hub of the community – a warm and welcoming space for all ages - a space where all residents can interact and learn from each other and come together as a community. The new space will enable the library to bring its mission to fruition – inspiring curiosity, engaging the community, sharing knowledge!

Two dedicated program rooms for children’s programming will allow the library to offer a wider array of programs, such as the following:

Crafty Babies, 0 - 2 yearsCreate things like footprints, hand and fingerprint crafts; keepsakes for mom and dad.

Wiggle and Jiggle, 21/2-4 yearsA very basic, but fun and energetic fitness program. This will involve getting the kids to stretch and practice balance, jump and dance to music using props like ribbon wands and hula hoops. My Smart Hands™ Level I. Baby Sign, 6 - 12 monthsLearn over 100 signs to use with your child. Classes are 45 minutes in length and are created for parents/caregivers and babies. In a playful, educational and language-rich environment, caregivers and children will build their American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary through instruction, interactive games and songs.

Come Dance with Me! 0 - 4 yearsA music-based program for parent and child using popular music.

Yum-Yum Time Age, 2-4 yearsA food-based program where children learn to make basic healthy snacks and then eat them. Allergy alert!

Parent TimeWeekly sessions led by guest presenters on specific topics of interest to parents.

The new library has a dedicated program room for adults. New programs under consideration include a silent book club, colouring for adults, crafts and much more! Exciting programming will be on offer in the Innovation Space with the Recording Studio, Digital Media Lab and 3D printer affording opportunities for residents to create, inspire, and innovate.

A bright new magazine/newspaper reading area and a comfortable, cozy adult lounge area with a fireplace will encourage patrons to use the library as a community living room.

A new Innovation Space with a digital media lab, recording studio, and 3D printer will provide many exciting opportunities for teens, millennials, adults, and seniors. The new library will have many meeting rooms for businesses and community organizations. There are individual study rooms as well as many quiet study areas that will come in handy during exam time.

The Library will be introducing a mobile printing feature so that customers will be able to print from their laptops while in the library or remotely from home. Online program registration and room bookings will be available via the library website. A coffee machine will service those who wish to spend hours in the new facility.

RecreationPlease describe the project:We are doing an expansion to the Leisure Centre. The centre was first built in 2001 and the Town has tripled in size in population since. There was a need to increase our space for our residents.

We will be going from 2500 square feet in the Fitness area to approximately 4000 sq ft, with the addition of separate changerooms for the fitness members. The new aerobics studio will increase in size and a new spinning room has been added. The addition of the full gymnasium, will now open the door for daytime and weekend programming for a variety of activities.

Multipurpose space will be doubled, giving us two large rooms for programming. There is even space for a commercial kitchen, to allow for both programming and to act as a supplement to large events held in the gymnasium. A new viewing gallery will now allow for viewing of the entire pool area.

What new services will be introduced? The addition of a full gymnasium will offer a wide variety of programming and bookings: cooking classes in the commercial kitchen, availability of special events with the kitchen to support the event, and bookings for birthday parties in the viewing gallery. It will also mean separate changerooms for fitness members, with the option of dedicated lockers; a fitness room dedicated to spinning classes, more space for personal training and fitness assessments and lots of lockers for day use and for rental to enhance security of personal items.

What makes you most excited about the project? The addition of the gymnasium opens a whole new area for activities that we were not able to accommodate

before such as league use, afterschool programming, adapted programs, and daytime seniors' programs. The new gym will offer separate changerooms available for fitness members, which in turn will open space in the other changeroom area.

How will the project benefit children & young families? The new gym will facilitate programming and space specifically geared for families. This will mean more space for birthday party celebrations, parents will be able to have full view of their children in swim lessons, leagues for youth, space for afterschool programs, both active and passive, homework space, volunteer opportunities with the leagues and larger babysitting space available.

How will the project benefit adults? The expansion will mean a larger selection of equip-ment in the gym with more space for varying activities and separate changerooms in the fitness area. A dedi-cated spin room will mean more spinning classes will be offered. The expansion of the Leisure Centre trans-lates to an increased capacity for room rental space al-lowing for more programming and facility rentals. The commercial kitchen will open new areas for program-ming.

How will the project benefit seniors? Seniors will benefit through the introduction of day-time, and weekday programs in the gym, such as pick-leball and badminton, cooking programs and the use of the kitchen for larger social events that can now be held in the gymnasium, additional space for personal training and more equipment to be able to choose from for those with varying abilities.

The GalleryThis is an exciting time for the visual arts in Whitchurch-Stouffville as The Latcham Gallery moves to its new home in the Leisure Centre at 2 Park Drive.

“Over the past 39 years, The Latcham Gallery has grown into a vibrant, creative place where we love to talk about art, introduce our community to new artists and their work, and create opportunities for visitors to be involved in the process of making art,” comments Director Roz Pritchard.

“We have built an impressive reputation province-wide as a professional art gallery for contemporary artists that presents ideas from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. We are also known locally as a fun, creative place to learn and celebrate art. We are here to inspire and encourage all visitors to expand their knowledge, share their experiences and thoughts, and to get creative!” Roz Pritchard has worked at The Latcham Gallery for 25 years and has been instrumental in the gallery’s growth.

“I’m really excited about the bright, beautiful studio space, and the increased foot traffic in our

new home” says Education Programs Manager Jennifer Onlock who started working at the gallery in 2009. “The opportunity to collaborate with our new neighbours in the facility is also exciting, and we hope to expand our programming in the coming years. Our classes and workshops are for all ages and abilities and build experience and confidence, whether it’s large-scale community art projects, Saturday art classes, art camps or special events. “

Elisa Coish, the Gallery’s new Curator joined the team in September 2017. “I’m thrilled to continue The Latcham Gallery’s long tradition of offering thought-provoking and inspiring exhibitions. Our expanded location in the Leisure Centre will attract a whole new part of the community and we look forward to being their go-to resource for the visual arts in Whitchurch-Stouffville,” says Coish.

The Latcham Gallery features nine exhibitions of contemporary art per year as well as classes, workshops, camps, tours and special events. For more information or to get involved, call The Latcham Gallery at 905-640-8954 or visit www.latchamgallery.ca
