From The President's Desk2017 Zone 8 Region of the Year

Jeff

Springtime is coming. This spring there are quite a few great Grand Prix Region events coming up. Please check out Page 2 of this issue. Also, watch your email for an announce-ment about the wild flower blooms. This year it should be spectacular, due to the amount of rain we’ve had. We can’t make the announcement until just days before, so we can catch the blooms at their best.

Speaking of great events, our Tours Chair, Alan Johnson puts together some of the most fun tours that I’ve been fortunate enough to attend. On February 9th we had a tour of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, culminating in a self-guided tour of the Battleship Iowa in San Pedro. The day started out with rain, which ended before we started the tour, and it turned into a most beautiful day. We had stops along the way at Point Fermin, a drive by of the Korean Bell of Friendship, and a stop at the Wayfarers’ Chapel before arriving at the Battleship Iowa. I hadn’t been to the Battleship Iowa before, and I highly recommend it. It’s right in our own back yard. Alan has more great driving tours lined up for 2019.

This month, we have our biannual “Day Away from Work” at Streets of Willow (See the flyer in this issue). This will be my second “Day Away” as a driver. If you really want to enjoy the performance and capabilities of your Porsche, this is a not miss event. We have great instructors to guide you, and it’s a very well-organized day, with significant track time. It’s very safe and a whole lot of fun.

Also this month, we’ll be meeting on March 9th at the Paradise Cove Beach Café. We will have a Porsche Corral. The restaurant has reserved space for us if you want to have breakfast. There will not be a fun run associated with the breakfast due to the Woolsey Fire. Please register at Motor-sportReg.com so we can let the restaurant know how many are coming. Registration closes on March 5th.

Save the date: July 13, 2019 – View the Universe through the Mt. Wilson 60-inch Telescope. Limited to 25 people.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED!California Festival of Speed – March 29 – 31, 2019

The California Festival of Speed is the Porsche enthusiasts dream weekend. Club Race, Time Trial, Swap meet, Porsche Corral, Porsches For Sale, Porsche Timeline Display, Vendor Row, Track Tours, Friends, Fun and all things Porsche. Need we say more? This event has race cars, show cars, it can even have your car!

Please think about volunteering. We use over 400 volun-teers each year. GPX always steps up, and we typically have the most volunteer hours of any Zone 8 region. However, I’ve been informed that we are running behind this year.

I’d like to make a special pitch for Traffic Control vol-unteers. I’m in charge of Traffic Control, one of the most important things volunteers manage. We keep traffic moving as well as checking credentials, pit access, hot pit access, and track access. We have a great time, and volunteers get free parking, lunch, and a volunteer shirt. And, after your shift, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the racing, vendor row, and many of the other terrific sights and sounds of Festival.

March. And it feels like we are almost out of winter. So, in February I had two opportunities to directly experi-

ence winter in other parts of the country: Sebring, Florida and rural New Jersey.

Sebring TripThe Sebring trip was for the first (and biggest) PCA Club

Race of the year. If anyone is interested about the Sebring history, I printed two historic perspectives in the last issue of Club Racing News. Go to www.PCAClubRacing.org. Fol-low the links to media, news and look for the 18.4 issue. The 19.1 issue (and other back issues are also available for view-ing) is there also and is primarily about Club Racing at last year's Rennsport Reunion VI. Sebring is a blast, even without having a car to drive on the track. It is a five day event start-ing with a DE/Test and Tune on Thursday with the annual Club Racing Victory Banquet that night. The host hotel is (literally) a stone's throw away and is all part of the WWII airport facility. It's not the smoothest track I've ever seen, party because the track is made up of sections of old runway and taxi ways. We have a room looking out on the track, and Suesan likes to work there and watch the race cars.

Friday night is a big track banquet held in the Gallery of Legends building. Saturday night has a sponsor show in the same building. There is free food and drinks, quite a variety as you walk around the hall. They do a good job. I have only been to about half of the tracks we race on, but the organiza-tion of these bigger events (Daytona, Road America, Watkins Glen, Sebring and our local Autoclub Speedway (the big ones I've been to)) are really well organized. Sebring uses about a hundred volunteers compared to Fontana that uses about 400. The main difference is that we have a lot more traffic control to manage because there can be four or five events going on at the same time, plus we have a lot more and varied activities than any other club race (track tours, vendor row, mini autocross, swap meet, kids activities, etc). We somehow manage to get those 400+ workers every year thanks to all of you. Fontana also has many, many more Porsche enthusiasts in attendance who are not there as part of a driving team. This seems to be unique in club racing.

Trip #2: Rural New JerseyTrip number two started two days after trip one ended. I

flew to Newark where my daughter, Kim, and her fiance just relocated from Orange County to a rural, nine acre wooded parcel with a 3500 sq. ft. 1950s home. Some amazing stories just about the property but...

Although I've always known New Jersey as The Garden State, my brief experience of it (Port Elizabeth) was anything but. Kim's work travels have taken her to this area a lot re-cently, and a great work opportunity convinced her to make the move.

I got a little carried away with this, so I'm continuing it on page 25

We have decided to move the GPX monthly Breakfast Meeting from the 1st Saturday each month to the 2nd Saturday, beginning in

April. Initially we had to move the April date because of activities in the Long Beach area. It occured to us that there are a lot of con-flicts on the 1st Saturday and people have been asking if we could

change it to the 2nd Saturday.

The LA Lit Meet every March, Steve McQueen Car Show at Boy's Republic every June, monthly breakfast at the Porsche Experi-

ence Center, Cars & Coffee in Palos Verdes, Orange Coast region's breakfast and more.

We took a show of hands at the last two breakfast meetings and no one objected to this change.

The Calendar on page two has the new dates, so I hope to see you at Glory Days Beachside Grill in Seal Beach on April 13. As usual,

our Board Meeting will immediately follow breakfast, so feel free to stick around and see how we operate

And the unmistakable engine note so often played in your head will now be courtesy of your right foot. Ahhhh, the sweet sound of fulfillment. Porsche. There is no substitute.

Morro Bay and Carmel Tour

Awakened early to the sound of hard rain, I thought how is this going to affect the tour to Morro Bay and Carmel. Knowing that early in the drive was Pine Mountain Summit over 6000 feet, and the late night news weather broadcast predicted snow below 5000 feet, I went to the Caltrans Road reports, chains or snow tires required. Eric Peterson had suggested a stop at the home of GPX found-ing member, Lee and Gail Wilson, who now lived in Paso Robles, CA and had a great car collection. A phone call lat-er and all was arranged. At the participants’ meeting I asked if anyone brought chains or snow tires, everyone laughed but then were informed of the new route and stops.

Departing Ventura the drizzle had stopped; northward we headed. It was clear skies and dry roads as we topped San Marcos Pass above Santa Barbara. Looking east and upwards to the mountains we would have crossed, there was snow on the peaks but bright sunshine below. A late breakfast was at the historic Cold Springs Tavern which started in the 1880’s as a stagecoach stop. It was truly a

meal out of the Old West with options like venison, buffalo, rabbit or duck on the menu.

We were welcomed with open arms and open garages. Spread between 2 garages were a 356 and two 911’s, a ’57 Corvette, an E Jag, several Ferraris and a replica Lotus 7. With lifts and a mini-machine shop in one garage, Lee is able to restore and maintain the vehicles in pristine condi-tion. From there it was an easy drive to the Sea Pines Golf Resort in Los Osos and a great dinner at Dorn’s Harbor-side Grill in Morro Bay.

Sunday morning started with 9 holes of golf or a leisurely breakfast overlooking Morro Bay. The first stop on CA Hwy 1 was at the Elephant Seal Rookery in San Simeon where the females give birth to their pups, and the bulls bellow and battle for mating rights. The highway was closed for 17 months by an enormous slide. Even though it officially re-opened last August, there is still a section of traffic controlled, 1 lane gravel road. After lunch in Big Sur, it was an easy drive to Carmel.

The GPX tour of Azusa to the Planes of Fame Museum climbed into the wild blue yonder twice. First, a challenging drive of sweeping turns and switchbacks up Azusa Canyon Road to a coffee stop at the Crystal Lake Café. At 5800 feet, we could gaze up through the oaks and ponderosa pines to the blue sky above.

After joyously descending the mountain roads then to the drudgery of the freeways, we arrived at Flo’s Café at the Chino Airport. Airport cafes always have great food, and Flo’s lived up to its reputation.

Although its collection ranges from a Wright Flyer Replica to the Viet Nam era and even the gondola of a retired Goodyear blimp, the Planes of Fame Museum specializes in World War II aircraft. Its Warbirds include static displays, many planes in flyable condition and a restoration shop

that is bringing planes back to flying condition. If a plane can fly, it has a drip pan on the floor to collect the oil that leaks. There were quite a few drip pans.

The mission of the Museum’s founder, Edward Maloney, was to save old planes from the scrap yard or worse. Many came that way. One example was a German ME 109. It had been shot down and landed in a Russian Lake. Many, many years later it was retrieved from the lake, and is now on display complete with a visible shell hole in the wing. Often the parts from a find of 2 or 3, dilapidated planes could be combined and restored by a dedicated group of volunteers into one that would fly.

The tour ended inside a B-17. Standing at a waist gunner position holding that 50 caliber, looking out for incoming bogies, that was the wild blue yonder.

one side and a precipice on the other – that’s an achievement!”What he actually said, “Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger and in which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left to the fighter’s honor.”

“The cruel sport” is a phrase often used in connection with motor racing, as per Dan Gurney who first uttered those words.

I’ve noted in personal field observations that fighting bulls are quite a bit taller than Carreras, but they are not as long – or as lean.

Bulls rarely go off the track because they do something stupid.

Paul Newman’s first law – It’s useless to put on your brakes when you are upside down. It is more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow.

To achieve anything in the bull fighting or the car racing game, you must be prepared to dabble in the boundary of disaster.

Palos Verdes & Battleship Iowa TourSaturday, February 9, 2019

Photos & Story: Alan JohnsonThe rain stopped just before the first car pulled in for

check-in, and after that it got better and better. This was a tour with lots of historic and scenic sights and stops- the Victorian Point Fermin Lighthouse, the Korean Bell of Friendship, Fort MacArthur and the tidepools of the Whites Point Beach Park. The highlight was the Wayfarers’ Chapel designed by Lloyd Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright. Its glass roof pulled in the warming sun.

Most of the rest of the drive through Palos Verdes had lots of scenic views of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Bay but also lots of stop signs. But it finished with Palos Verdes Drive East with only 1 stoplight – and it was green. It climbs to the top of the Palos Verdes Peninsula with lots of sweeping turns then descends steeply with three 180 hairpins. Mundane city streets returned the group to BB-61, the Battleship IOWA.

The tour of the IOWA started on the main deck along side the 16” main turrets. Alongside Turret 2 is a plaque honoring the 47 men killed by an explosion inside the Turret. Climbing 4 more decks to view other weapons, Combat Infor-mation Center enclosed by 18” steel and the special accom-modations for FDR on his trip to Tehran. Below deck were the racks of bunks for the crew and the galley. About 7 tons of food was consumed each day.

As usual the tour ended in the Museum Store. I wish I had bought the coffee mug shaped like a grenade, but…

The morning after the Zone 8 President's Meeting and Banquet in Westlake Village in January... Thanks to Linda Cobarrubias we were treated to a mystery tour of a private car collection not too far away.

There was a fine mix of Porsche, Ferrari and many other makes. The cars are extremely well maintained and, according to the man responsible for that maintenance, they all get driven on a regular basis.

Thanks Linda!!!!!

by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast RegionBook Reviews for PorschephilesBobby's Got a Brand New Car byZidrou,artworkbySebastianChebretpublishedSeptember26,2017byWord&Pictures,LakeForest,CA

It must be admitted, up front, that this book has no Porsche content. It is not a book for Porschephiles to own and read, but it could have an important place in

the perpetuation of the car hobby. Many marque clubs today report declining membership.

Where once teenagers bought cars before they were old enough to apply for drivers licenses, and showed up at the DMV on the very day of their eligibility, it is now reported that many teenagers wait years beyond their eligibility to apply for driver's licenses. It has even been postulated that due to Uber and Lyft, total car ownership in 2020 will be less than in 2015. And it has been reported that Google/Alphabet already has numerous self-driving cars zooming employees from building to building amongst its Silicon Val-ley operations.

Modern cars, even the non-self-driving ones, tend to be self-propelled computers-on-wheels. Where once a few wrenches and a screw driver or two would put a mechanic in business, now it takes a computer, and a specialized one at that. The shade tree mechanic of the John Muir How to Keep your Volkswagen Alive (argueably the first of the complete idiot books) is now the guy with [only] a home computer.

Many current TV commercials for cars tout their sound systems, their driver-support sensor systems, systems to relieve drivers from the effort of parking the car, etc., but say nothing about driveability, performance, and absolutely nothing about maintainability or, perish the thought, hop-up ability.

What is there in all of the above to generate interest in the car hobby, to promote the mystique of certain marques (i.e. Porsche), to preserve the value of collector cars, or even acknowledge the joy of driving?

Many, cultural/political movements have recognized/pro-moted the need to inculcate adherence to their principles in its youth at very tender ages, in order to preserve and promote their cause. Why should the car hobby, and the Porsche Club in particular, not adopt a similar philosophy and start today, to germinate and nurture the Phorschephiles of tomorrow?

Bobby is a book not for Porschephiles to read and enjoy, but to gift to their progeny in hopes of developing Porsche-philes for the future. The story takes Bobby (a 10? year old) from his decision to buy a car “that goes VAROOM! for

real”, to cruising through town and chauffeuring his parents (who are ordered to wear seat belts), home from their respec-tive jobs. Bobby purchases everything “with his magic card (the one that pays for everything)”. Bobby enjoys the drive, but the book says nothing about the satisfactions of DIY maintenance/repair, the thrill of competition, or the social interaction of showing a car.

Bobby's got a brand-new car is hardbound with 32, 9x10 inch, highly graphic pages (e.g. the cover). With large type and short sentences, it is intended for readers of 5-8 years old. As I remember, at that and slightly more advanced age, I loved getting books for Christmas.

I have mixed emotions about endorsing this book as a means of motivating a new generation of car enthusiasts. I support the message that cars are nice, but cannot condone the sloppy English used in the title. By the time you read this, the book should be available for $17.95 from your fa-vorite bookseller (ask for it) or from www.quatroknows.com

(Continued from page 5)I spent a week there and was very happy to be able to help

move out furniture and trash getting the house ready for their moving truck to arrive. The original owners had both passed away, and most of their 70 years of living came with the house. That's actually a good story that includes caring neighbors, strong community and other laudable traits, but I don't have room to write it here, so let me get to weather... And I HAVE to talk about the food.

We got snow a couple of days. Low teens at night, mid 40s day. I took heavy duty clothing, but never really needed more than a couple of light layers. As long as you kept moving... I was told "IT IS DRY SNOW." Knowing about the DRY HEAT in our deserts, I made some assumptions. Altogether, the weather was not a hindrance. Driving from small town to small town over mostly 2-lane country roads through gentle rolling hills was pretty great.

FoodMy mother's family immigrated to this area from Sicily

in the late 1930s (OK, Rome, New York isn't exactly New Jersey but...). Nine siblings; She was next to youngest. They all eventually ended up in Los Angeles just before WWII. My dad (a sailor) met my mom who, at the time, was building DC3s in Northern California, and the rest is, well, my family.

Growing up I ate good Italian food. My mom did great, but some of her sisters were exceptional cooks. I spent a year as a student in Florence (Italy) in early 1970s, so I definitely had good food there. The best Italian food I've had in North America was in Boston's North End (on two trips). And I mean, there are a half dozen restaurants (in-cluding bakeries and pizza) that I'd go back to in a heart-beat. But the Italian food I've had in New York and now New Jersey, is just a notch below Boston, but better than anything I've had in SoCal (may be I just don't get around enough).

Because of Suesan, bagels, rye bread, Challah and pas-trami have reached pretty high standards for me, but we both need to thank Carolyn Rosenberg for turning us on to Langer's - best pastrami and best rye bread we've ever had.

Kim is working in grocery, so we spent time driving around the area (lots of small towns) looking at grocery stores. These are probably the largest grocery stores I've ever been in. WE DO NOT HAVE STORES LIKE THIS. Which door you walk into depends on what you're look-ing for. The Prepared Food section was bigger than some grocery stores I've been in. If you were looking for grocer-ies, you'd use another entrance. Every Friday night one of the stores has a $10 lobster dinner in the Sports Bar part of the store.

Croissants and BagelsThe grocery chain Kim works for makes croissants in most

of their stores. BUT, they are made with butter imported from France and, if I've ever had a better croissant, it was in Paris. So, a few dozen croissants went into an extra suitcase Kim lent me. I'd already picked up Italian cookies and other items, but then, on the way to Newark airport, I stopped at Livingston Bagels in Livingston, NJ. I bought enough bagels and Challah to fill the rest of the suitcase (a BIG suitcase). The suitcase was checked luggage (next time I'll get a smaller one and make it a carry on. Everything in the suitcase was moist from the humidity in the luggage compartment I guess).

So, the day after I got back home I delivered plastic con-tainers with half a dozen of the croissants to several family members in San Diego. I shared the bagels and other goodies with them as well. Within a week it was all gone, so I went to the best deli in San Diego (not very great) and Suesan and I looked at each other remembering those fabulous New Jersey bagels that we had just finished the day before.

I guess I'll be going back to New Jersey in the not too distant future.

Suesan and I spent last year's 4th of July in the Hyatt at the Arch in St. Louis. We were on our way to Parade in Lake of the Ozarks and went early to avoid traveling on the 4th. Besides the best fireworks I've ever seen behind the Arch and over the Mississippi River (from our hotel room window) there were several excellent things we managed to see in a few days.

The Cardinal's stadium complex was probably the nicest downtown baseball park I've seen. The Missouri Botanical garden is a must if you like things like that, but the City Museum (photo above) was one of the best kids climb, crawl, slide, caves, walkways places I've ever seen.
