This is a follow up to my March column. I brought up a bunch of events that we had during the month of March that I was fortunate enough to be a part of. As I mentioned last month, this spring there are quite a few great Grand Prix Re-gion events coming up. Please check out Page 2 of this is-sue. Unfortunately, I couldn’t participate in the drive to the wildflower super bloom at the Poppy Reserve, but from the pictures and post event comments, it was spectacular.

I did get to participate in my second Day Away from Work at Streets of Willow on March 11th. This time we drove the track in a clockwise direction (in October we drove counter-clockwise). I felt much more comfortable than I did the first time back in October. Probably because back then I hadn’t driven the track before. I was much more relaxed this time, since my confidence level was higher than before. I was able to run without an instructor for my last run group. We have fantastic instructors, and I found that with an instructor I was able to polish up my approach to each lap. What a fun day of driving and being with many of my PCA friends. The other great thing is that you get to meet people from other regions that you might not get to otherwise. The comradery is very special.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, if you haven’t run your Porsche on a track before, it’s time to do it. Our next Day Away comes October 14, 2019. ut it on your calendar. You’ll be glad you did.

On the Saturday before Day Away, about 20 members met for breakfast at the Paradise Cove Beach Café in Malibu. Each year we have a drive through the Santa Monica mountains for a fun run, then end up at Paradise Cove. This year we decided not to have the drive due to the devastation from the Woolsey fire, but we had a great time at the Beach Café, with great people, and terrific food. The restaurant roped off a section of the parking lot for our corral, where we got to look over each other’s Porsches and have friendly conversations. It was a beautiful morning at the beach. Hopefully next year, there will be enough of a recovery in the mountains to do a great tour again.

I’d also like to mention this year’s California Festival of Speed. Every year we recruit approximately 400 volunteers to help run this event. This year we had a great turnout of volun-teers from just about every region in Zone 8. My responsibility is Traffic Control, which requires the most volunteers. Typi-cally, I need about 120 volunteers to cover the whole weekend. I want to thank Janice Witteried, our volunteer coordinator, for wrangling almost that many. I had terrific coverage for the whole weekend, and we made several changes where we

thought we could make improvements. I’m very happy with the way everything worked out this year.

Traffic Control is a very important part of managing this three day event. We greet every car that comes in, direct peo-ple to the parking area, check credentials at various locations, and just make sure that we keep people moving safely and to the proper areas. We also cover the hot pits, the corral, entry to the garage area, as well as the track exit.

Traffic Control Assistant NeededI’ve been managing Traffic Control for the last six years, and

really enjoy and look forward to it. It’s becoming more than a one-man job. I think it would be a good idea to have someone assist me, someone willing to learn the ropes. Please contact me if you’re interested in being a part of this great event.

ToursOne of the things that the Grand Prix region does extreme-

ly well is the quantity and quality of our driving tours. Alan Johnson and his team are an incredible asset to all of us who get to particiipate in these.

Take a look at our calendar on page 3, but also notice the four new tour flyers starting on page 6. You'll also see the re-port on our recent Poppy Fields tour. We don't get spectacular desert blooms unless we have a particularly wet winter/spring, which we did this year.

Califronia Festival of Speed — Free TiresThe California Festival of Speed was a great success. One

of the things that peaked interest for many was the four sets of tire donated by Michelin. Winners were selected randomly amongst four groups: 1. Saturday's mini Autocross. 2. Sun-day's mini Autocorss, 3. One winner from amongst the 3-400 volunteers and 4. one set of tires went to one of our Time Trial/Club Racer drivers.

Even if you were not one of the Time Tria/ Club Race driv-ers, you could still be eligible for 3 of the 4 Michelin tire draw-ings. There were a total of 412 entries in the four categories. If

I'm doing the math right, you would have a 1/100 chance of winning a set of Michelin tires. That's an incredible oppor-tunity for contributing 4 hours of volunteer time and trying the mini autocross

We will cover the Festival in more depth in the May Circuit. It's been a week since Suesan and I returned from Festival. We've got most of the boxes sorted and stored for next year. My body has almost fully recovered from all the lifting and schlepping over those five days and things are almost back to normal. Of course, normal in this house means "what's the next project(s) we've got coming up.

Upcoming Trips for usI'm heading for a club race at Virginia International Race-

way in June. This will be my first visit to VIR. I've heard so much about it and I'm excited about finally getting there. Of course, I'm going as Club Racing News editor and don't ex-pect to be spending time in a race car.

Then in July we're heading to Boca Raton for the annual Porsche Parade. Hummm. Florida in July???. Suesan plans to make her time outside of an air conditioned car or resort as minimal as possible. There are some interesting tours on the schedule, including swamp boat tours in the Everglades.

We have never driven a car to a Parade east of the Rocky Mountains, so we do what we can in a rental car, which in-cludes any of the tours, the Gimmick Rally (which we really enjoy), and a few other things. Of course, many of the activi-ties happen right in the resort itself, which looks like a fabu-lous place to vacation.

If you've never been to a Porsche Parade, distance will not be the excuse in 2020. The La Quinta Resort near Palm Springs will be the venue. You might ask: Palm Springs in July? Well, there is that. But again, since cars now come with air conditioning, the discomfort can be pretty much minimized.

GPX Tour to Wrightwood (the wrong way) Saturday, June 22, 2019Redlands to Wrightwood via Big Bear & ArrowheadDrive the Twisties — Lunch in Wrightwood

Registration & Information: http://pcagpx.motorsportreg.com

Alan Johnson (562) 305-8002 [email protected]

Each year the Grand Prix Region drives Angeles Crest, but this is a different route to get to Wrightwood. “Wrightwood the Wrong Way” is its country cousin, Redlands to Wrightwood along the Rim of the World Highway. Last year’s tour was so well received we are going again, but with a stop at the Strawberry Peak Fire Lookout Tower.

Start in Redlands and climb Highway 38 over the Onyx Summit and past Big Bear Lake. Just off Hwy 38, the lookout tower was first built in 1933 with staff to look for smoke from forest fires. More modern technology has led to the closing of most towers, but Strawberry Peak is still open in the summer. Climb the three stories and bring your binoculars. https://californiathroughmylens.com/strawberry-peak-lookout

Continue along the Rim of The World Highway past Lake Ar-rowhead to Wrightwood and lunch at the Grizzly Café.

Saturday, drive from La Canada to Kernville with lunch at Kohnen’ Country Bak-ery in Tehachapi then up the scenic Kern River Canyon and spend the night in Kernville.

We have decided to move the GPX monthly Breakfast Meeting from the 1st Saturday each month to the 2nd Saturday, beginning in

April. Initially we had to move the April date because of activities in the Long Beach area. It occured to us that there are a lot of con-flicts on the 1st Saturday and people have been asking if we could

change it to the 2nd Saturday.

The LA Lit Meet every March, Steve McQueen Car Show at Boy's Republic every June, monthly breakfast at the Porsche Experi-

ence Center, Cars & Coffee in Palos Verdes, Orange Coast region's breakfast and more.

We took a show of hands at the last two breakfast meetings and no one objected to this change.

The Calendar on page two has the new dates, so I hope to see you at Glory Days Beachside Grill in Seal Beach on April 13. As usual,

our Board Meeting will immediately follow breakfast, so feel free to stick around and see how we operate

Poppy Reserve TourStory & Photos by Alan Johnson

Others have their “Flash Mob”; Grand Prix region had its “Flash Tour”.

With the past winter’s rain there was great interest in the anticipated wildflower bloom in Southern California. The peak bloom time is so dependent on sun, rain, wind and temperature conditions. With the local media report-ing that some areas had received over 10,000 visitors per day on the weekend, it had to be mid-week.

The tour was initially set up within a 2 week window. Watching the 10 day weather forecasts on the Weather Underground website, the final date was set for Monday March 25. It was predicted to be at the end of a warming trend with cooling and rain possible by Wednesday.

Members from Grand Prix, Los Angeles and Orange County Regions gathered in La Canada for the drive up the

Angeles Crest Highway. Even descending the San Gabriel Mountains hillsides of wildflowers came into view. Sticking to the backroads on the outskirts of Palmdale and Lancast-er, acre-sized patches of flowers began to appear around each turn. Cresting a rise overlooking the Antelope Val-ley, suddenly the expanse of the CA State Poppy Reserve came into view with miles of the State Flower of CA, the orange-gold California Poppy.

Once parked there were many trails taking visitors up amongst the flowers. Interspersed among the poppies were other flowers: Lupine, Red Maids, yellow Coreopsis and many more. At the Interpretive Center a packet of poppy seeds was purchased. After planting in the fall, I will have my own “square feet” of Poppies in my backyard.

byBruceHerrington,OrangeCoastRegionBookReviewsforPorschephilesThe Point of it All: A lifetime of great loves & endeavors by Charles Krauthammerpublished November 2018 by Crown Forum, NY, NY

This is a book with no PORSCHE content, but still an inter-esting, engaging, and even enlightening read. The subtitle may be misleading because this book is not a romance, but rather it is a collection of Charles Krauthammer columns, essays actually, printed in several different publications but mostly the Washington Post. Some 30 years worth have been selected by topics into 18 chapters pack-aged in five parts, bookended by commentary from his son, and editor, Daniel. Though his “life-time war on commas” makes him an enemy for this reviewer, the book is still highly recom-mended.

Charles definitely had a way with words: he worked very hard at it and it shows. His eru-dition will probably give your vocabulary some unaccustomed exercise; perhaps the same for your perspective on the world at large. His pieces are filled with humor, insight and facts. They are easily readable by anyone, despite challenging the intellect of even the scholarly. Most ar-ticles finish with a thought pro-voking flourish. As a formerly practicing psychiatrist, his com-ments on gun control, medical ethics and other national pas-sions, are particularly intriguing.

On the surface he might appear to be anti-establishment, but perhaps it is really a matter of being anti-gullible – he doesn't criticize per se, but points out alternatives and asks some questions that no one else (dares ?) to discuss. He really is presenting a 30 thousand feet view of goings on in this and oth-er countries. He deals with historical figures, philanthropists, scholars, philosophers, even journalists. Few current politician passed muster as worthy of inclusion in his 'if you can't say something good say nothing at all" commentaries. He writes

of chess, baseball, politics and economics, all with touches of ancient history thrown in. One is reminded of the Walrus in Through The looking glass who would speak of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings and....

Krauthammer does not dictate, preach or opine. He ob-serves and comments. Naturally, he ob-serves presidents and administrations, and sometimes he seems to favor; at other times to deplore, the actions of the same administration. Hard to cat-egorize his overall position, but in each instance he has a knack for convincing the reader that he, Charles has unique, constructive insight. He is definitely of the question authority school, but his questions are not about matters of legit-imacy but rather deal with the sound-ness of their thinking. An approach that may make one reconsider one's own thinking. That seems to be the point.

It's not so much that he's iconoclastic as that he is always looking for an oth-er side to the story. He refuses to buy conventional wisdom just because it is conventional, instead he has a canny knack for being able to point out an overlooked facet of many issues of the day. He writes critiques, not criticism.

One thing rarely found in Krautham-mer's writing is the word "I." He was not only a very private person, but also wise enough to recognize that his job

was to analyze and present topics, not himself. As editor, his son Daniel did create a final chapter with writings about his dad's life.

THE POINT OF IT ALL is hard bound with 360 6x9-1/2 inch matte pages with a very readable type size. There are no illustrations but there is a very extensive index. A must read for anyone interested in the world beyond their Porsche. It should be available for $28.00 from your favorite bookseller or from Amazon.com.

On our recent tour to the Poppy Field State Park near Lancaster, our participants got to see some truly magnificant colors, thanks to all the rain we've had this year. Mike and Karen Rozenblatt are shown in front of one of those fields. Alan Johnson took the photo.
