Grand Prix Region does our best to provide our members with events that they find fun, exciting and sometimes infor-mative.
In October we had all of the above. In addition to our terrif-ic Breakfast Club at Glory Days Beachside Grill in Seal Beach on the first Saturday of the month, we had a performance driving event, a driving tour, and two different cultural tours.
Our twice annual Day Away from Work (apply named as we always have it on a Monday) at Streets of Willow was held on October 16th, and, from what I’ve been told, was as terrific as ever. We had a great turnout, and fun was had by all.
On October 21st we had a driving tour in the San Gabriel Mountains that took us to the Graber Olive House in On-tario for a very informative and delicious tour, and from there we drove to Rancho Cucamonga to tour the beautiful Sam Maloof House and Workshop, and see some of the amazing furniture that he created.
We have many more events coming up. 2018 plans on being another busy year for GPX. Please check our event calendar in this issue, as well as our website www.grandprixregion.com for up to the minute changes.
I also want to give a free plug for the Porsche Experience Center. If you haven’t been there yet, I suggest you go. I re-cently spent the day there taking in an hour and a half drive with an instructor. I chose a 718 Boxster S manual. We spent the first part of the session on the handling course, and then moved on to some of the low friction circuits at the facility. Then back to the handling course. It was amazing how what you do on the low friction courses can apply directly to the handling on the road course. The instructor was great, the drive was great, and I can’t wait to get back there and do it again. I learned quite a bit about improving my driving tech-nique, as well as how to be much more efficient on a road course. What a blast!
After my drive Juliet and I had lunch at Restaurant 917. There’s a great view of the facility from anywhere in the din-ing room, as well as the balcony, and the food and service is absolutely first class.
Please join us every month for our Breakfast Club on the first Saturday of every month at Glory Days Beachside Grill in Seal Beach.
Please visit with Ludmila in our Goodie Store for some ter-rific club merchandise.
The December Cone Zone will feature 912 and all 911 models pre 1978. We had so many 914s at our most recent breakfast, the parking lot was almost 100% full.

At our September Breakfast meeting, Tours Chair Alan Johnson stands next to his Cay-man that had just had a full cramic coating installed by Polished Detail in Signal Hill.
We recently had a tech session at Polished Detail. Evidently Alan and others there were very impressed. It sounds like ceramic coating will soon replace the vinyl products that have been popular for several years.
On the Cover...
Last weekend Suesan and I drove up from San Diego for our monthly Breakfast Meeting in Seal Beach. It was no surprise that there were so many cars and members in attendance... It happens every time 914s are the designated marque for the Cone Zone. In the December Circuit we will be highlighting some of these cars. There were two just recently restored 914s that really caught my eye. It's great to see that there is such a following for these great Porsches. Up until about a year ago I owned a '72 2.0 that was so much fun to drive. It was my autocross and general fun car to drive for many years. So, a special thanks to Leamon Stansell and all the rest who came last Saturday.
Our tours, under Alan Johnson, seem to be getting more and more popular. Not only are we having more of them, but they are drawing more people than ever. Our upcoming Neth-ercutt tour sold out in just a few days. I guess we'll have to do another one soon. What we forgot to mention was the little known fact that the Nethercutt does annual holiday concerts every year. I've been once and, boy, was it worth the effort. These concerts are handled differently than the other tours. They establish a date that you can call to get tickets. There is no cost, and each person can only get four tickets, but you have to know about it and be persistent with your calling. It must have taken 40 speed dial calls when I did get tickets several years ago.
The concerts are limitied in size, so getting tickets is not easy. You just have to know about it in advance and know how to speed dial. Even though I am mentioning this a week after I heard that the tickets were available, if you are interested, put it on your calendar for mid October next year. Their website has information. One of the reasons that it is difficult to get through is that the Nethercutt has a very small staff so, in ad-dition to all of the other responsibilities they have, the holiday concert tickets adds one more very big job for them. But, it is definately worth it!
I'm heading up to Buttonwillow this weekend for the next to last PCA Club Race on this year's calendar, the final one being at Motorsports Ranch in Texas in two weeks. I've been asked to drive the pace car, something I've never done before. I know it is not difficult, but it will be interesting. Mike Mul-ligan (Mugs) will be the radio man in the right seat with me. Sounds like all I have to do is whatever see tells me to do. I guess this is just another way to get the Cayenne on the track.
In this issue you'll find a revised flyer for our December 16 Holiday Party, again being held at the Long Beach Yacht Club. Registration has just opened, so sign up as soon as you can. This is the one biggest event of the year that we "pay back" our memembers. OK, it's not reall a "pay back", but we do heavily subsidize the dinner as well as providing interest gifts to every attendee. This year Suesan found a new source for these gifts. She has been trying them out for over a month and has made some nice choices.
So, December 16. Mark it on your calendar and join us in Long Beach for our annual Holiday Party.
It sounds like Suesan and I must be two of the only people who have not been to the Porsche Expeerience Center in Car-son. I am sure we will make it up there at some point, but it has not happened yet. From reading Jeff's column on the fac-ing page, he is obviously enjoying it immensely. It's one of the tough parts about being the GPX President, but he seems to be handling it with ease!!! Good job Jeff!

by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast RegionBook Reviews for PorschephilesSHELBY AMERICAN Up Close and Behind the Scenes, 1962-1965: The Venice Yearsby Dave Friedman, published September 2017 by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, MN
The complete title of this great book is rather cumbersome; focus on the Up Close and Behind the Scenes which says it all about this book. Professionally produced, with differing images on the end papers, this book exudes quality – care-fully prepared, just like the cars described. The dust jacket has folded edges to prevent tears and make it durable, which is almost a pity - the subtle image on the hard cover itself is worth displaying on your coffee table. And images is what this book is all about.
The author was Shelby Ameri-can's official in-house resident photographer in the 1960s, and this book is a collection of his pictures resurrected from a variety of archives and provided with explanatory captions. Some of the scenes showing the Shelby operation of the early '60s, e.g. the front end papers, seem very similar to 1950s scenes from the Porsche shops.
There is no direct Porsche content in this book, but 904s are shown behind (darn) the Cobra's in some of the racing pictures, and Spyder hot-shoes of the '50s (Roger Penske and Bob Hol-bert) are mentioned as Cobra drivers in the '60s. There is also photographic evidence that George Lucas (the George Lucas no less) spent some of his youth as a Shelby crew member. Extensive quotations and detailed captions for the generally unposed pictures give the book a very personalized feeling. The conversational tone of the captions makes it read like behind the scenes gossip; it really is the inside story. The time frame covered is that of the design-build-develop-race-repeat era of Shelby American in Venice, California, the formative years, if you will. In addition to the Cobras, the develop-ment of the Daytona Coupes, Ford GT40 and The GT350 Mustangs is covered.
SHELBY AMERICAN Up Close and Behind the Scenes tells the story of a small company building virtually home-built
cars, unimpeded by outside interfer-ence of corporate mentality or govern-ment regulations, and beating the big boys on the race track. It is very much a reprise of the Porsche story. There are many pictures of cars in development/modification and on the race track, but to a great degree this book is about the people of Shelby, and their unique camaraderie. The names that float through this book are a comprehensive who's who of mid
century, world-wide motor sport.
Shelby-American was focused on racing and much of the book is devoted to race cover-age, presenting inside stories, not just results. It gives insight into a by-gone era of do-it-yourself, lo-tech manual work-the Venice shops that produced the cars that won the World Manufacturer's Championship in 1965 did not even have air tools. This is a book with a grass-roots feeling that any motor-sports
enthusiast, even Porschephiles, should have. Porschephiles come in multiple stripes, but those oriented to the mainte-nance/repair/modification/construction of cars, or the in-the-pits 'scene' of motor-racing world-wide, will love this book.
There are four chapters, one for each of the years covered. There is also an Epilogue that touches briefly on the GT350 production and 1966-67 Shelby-Mustang racing successes.
SHELBY AMERICAN Up Close and Behind the Scenes is a hardbound book of 240, 12 in x 9.75 in pages, with 100 color & 200 b-w photos. There is a complete index and a very comprehensive appendix tabulating Shelby-Ford results from the almost 150 races in which they participated from October '62 through June '67. By the time you read this, it should be available from your favorite bookseller (ask for it) or from QuatroKnows.com. It is not sacrilege for a Porsche-phile to have this
