March finds us here at EDW fasting, praying, and helping our neighbors through our St. Lucy’s Lenten Drive (see separate article).

Life is not easy or fair. I believe that everyone, no matter his or her circumstance, carries a cross. We live in a world that idolizes people’s

cool Facebook post or perfect IG (Instagram) picture. But that is not real. That is not a true representation of what is going on in someone’s life. It is a moment in time. It is what some want the world to see. No one is perfect or has a perfect life. There is no such thing. Everyone gets scared, stressed, angry, and jealous. Everyone faces trying times. That is why we need Lent. To take a step back and look at our lives and the way we live through a different lens. God’s lens. What truly has value. What truly matters. St. Joseph is a perfect example of this.

The Church encourages us to be devoted to St. Joseph because he was a model in the heroic practice of all the virtues. The example of virtuous living that he gave in the exact fulfillment of the duties of his state of life is worthy of our reflection. Read the gospel and you will see his faith, hope and charity practiced under trying circumstances. He was prudent in caring for his wife and the child; he showed great leadership in protecting them and assisting them. He was religious in every sense, with that delicacy and sincerity of conscience that is proper to the saints of God. He was just in his dealings with God and man. He was conspicuous for his fortitude and courage. He was truly outstanding in the practice of virginal chastity. More: he protected and defended Mary's virtue in the time of courtship and all during their life together. They had made a promise of chastity, and because they were resolved to live it for God they were blessed above all others. While Mary inspired him to practice this virtue perfectly, he, as a real man, understood the profound meaning of her inspiration and how it came from a heart that was steeped

in the love of God. Time and again the Church has made it clear that Joseph is not a saint for only a certain number of souls, but that he can help all.

During this month we will continue our journey to the cross with our acts of penitence. We will reflect on our mortality ("Remember man thou art dust") and the shortness of life ("and to dust thou shall return"). We will heed the call, "Now is the acceptable time, now is “the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2).” Just like Our Lord's earthly life every moment of our lives is leading up to the last moment—when for eternity we will either go to God or suffer the fire.

The Solemnity of St. Joseph is a special landmark this month in which we will celebrate the great honor bestowed upon the foster father of Jesus. And if you are Irish (who isn't), St. Patrick's feast is another cause for a joyful celebration. The feast of the Annunciation is celebrated on March 25. The saints that we will focus on this month and try to imitate are St. Katharine Drexel (March 3), St. Casimir (March 4), Sts. Perpetua and Felicity (March 7), St. John of God (March 8) St. Frances of Rome (March 9), St. Patrick (March 17), St. Cyril of Jerusalem (March 18), St. Joseph (March 19) and St. Toribio de Mogrovejo (March 23).

Please check out the Lent chart inside. If you are like me, you sometimes need a quick reference. Hold fast with Christ this Lent. The joy of Easter is around the corner. Save the date for the Annual EDW Easter Egg Hunt - Holy Saturday April 11th.

KNIGHT OF THE MONTHBy GK John Rovinski Jr

The March Knight of the Month is Bob Dannemiller. Bob is active as ever at the Council, Board, Assembly, and the State Level but that is not why I chose him. Bob also works tirelessly for St. Lucy Project. He delivers literally tons of food to four area food banks. Bob’s quiet service to others is a model for all us. Thank you, Bob, for all you do.

EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTHBy GK John Rovinski Jr

If you have had anything to eat from the Grand Ballroom or the Paradise Lounge, there is a good chance it was made by Maria Diaz and Lucy Diaz-Miaja. Event after event our guests rave about the food and it is because of these two ladies. Their culinary expertise makes sure that our guests enjoy their time here, leave satisfied, and come back. Maria and Lucy, I can not thank you enough.

RETIREES’ CORNERMarch 2020

Are you retired? Maybe semi-retired? Join some Knights for lunch – March 10th !!

At a recent Council Meeting, it was mentioned that the “Retirees” are meeting informally with lunch at Anthony’s Restaurant (US50 and An-nandale Road) on the second Tuesday of each month at 12:30PM.

This small group would like to gather more Knights for lunch. If a sufficient number of Knights gather on a regular basis, the hope is to move the lunch back to the Council with Maria’s equally delicious lunches AND perhaps expand the activities (games, cards, conversation, etc).

ROSARY FOR MARRIAGEBy PGK Kenny Goss

Please join the rosary group on Saturday March 21st at 12 noon to pray a rosary for traditional marriage. I have signed up as a Captain, and along with hundreds of other Captains nationwide we will gather to pray. This is open to anyone who wants to join us, so feel free to invite friends and family.

LENTEN DRIVE FOR ST. LUCY’S PROJECTBy GK John Rovinski Jr.

When you think of Arlington, you think of the many blessings those living here enjoy. What if I told you that almost a quarter a million people are food insecure in the Arlington Diocese? Food insecurity means that a person does not know where his or her next meal is coming from. We at EDW are very blessed and continue to look for ways to serve those less fortunate. Members of our council, like Bob Dannemiller, give of their time every week helping St Lucy’s respond to our neighbors in need. As we begin lent, I ask that everyone give to our Lenten Drive for St. Lucy’s Project. There will be donation bins at the council home bar and the main hall during events. I believe that this should be a yearly Lenten observance for EDW. So, instead of ordering fries or another adult beverage, drop some bills in the bin for someone less fortunate. Thank you in advance. Happy Lent.

PLAN FOR THIS TAX DAY AND INTO THE FUTURE

April 15 (tax day) is right around the corner. It’s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a tax-savings vehicle. Or perhaps someone has tried

to convince you to open an account, touting the rate of interest that money in one of these accounts can earn. Let me join the chorus of folks encouraging you to open or add funds to an annuity, but for a different reason.

Certainly, contributing money to a Knights of Columbus annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And, our annuities do pay a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. Opening or adding to an annuity for these reasons, however, strikes me as taking a short-term view of a product that is designed to provide long-term security. How much security? How does retirement income that you cannot outlive — guaranteed — sound to you?

Here at the Knights of Columbus, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into that annuity over time can – properly structured – guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. That guarantee — along with the fact that no one has ever lost money left in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember – absolute safety of principal) — really will provide you with peace of mind.

We are am happy to meet with you – at your conve-nience and in your home – to explain in detail the benefits of opening a Knights of Columbus annuity, along with the benefits of our top-rated life insurance, disability income and long-term care insurance plans.

LONG-TERM CARE PLANS OFFER PEACE OF MIND

Since its addition to the Order’s product portfolio in 2000, long-term care (LTC) insurance has provided the Knights of Columbus with an excellent opportunity to further serve members and their families. And, for our long-term care policy holders in the United States, there’s an added bonus.

It’s called “Provider Pathway,” a program offering access to a network of long-term care providers at discounted rates. The network includes discounts on products, such as hearing aids, diabetic supplies, personal emergency response systems, and durable medical equipment, as well as skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, and adult day care.

Eligibility for participation in this program is open to Knights of Columbus long-term care insurance policyholders, their spouses, dependent children, parents and parents-in-law. All providers are fully credentialed and meet state licensing requirements.

If you haven’t yet spoken with us about long-term care insurance, you owe it to yourself to do so. There are a few decisions to make in choosing a “plan” — a comprehensive plan that covers care whether you’re at home or in a facility, or one that covers facility only; daily benefit amounts and benefit durations (how much and how long it will last); and the length of the elimination period (waiting period) before benefits kick-in.

Having a professionally trained agent ― and brother Knights you can trust ― to help guide you through the process is yet another valuable benefit that comes with your membership. Take advantage of it; contact us today. Robert J. Canter, Jr., FICF, LUTCF, CSA 301-952-0180
