DICK BAKER WINS WCST EBONITE SINGLES SUPER SENIOR DIVISION

AT SILVER NUGGET LANESby Dick Sanders

LAS VEGAS—Dick Baker (Henderson, NV), captured his 6th WCST Title, last week-end at Silver Nugget Lanes in N. Las Vegas, NV. It was a nip and tuck battle between two very expe-rienced tournament players, that went right down to the wire in the finals. Ron Winger, leading qualifier on Saturday, with 2351 for the 10 games, led Dick by 31 pins. Dick started the finals of 10 bowlers in 3rd place. Ron held the lead up until Game #7, then Dick took over the lead, up until Game #9, and Ron back in the lead by 34 pins, going into the position match game. Both bowlers, opened in their 1st frame of the match, Dick another opening the 3rd frame. Ron got a bad break in the 5th frame, leaving a 7-10 split on a pocket hit. Both bowlers went off the sheet with strikes, Dick from the 4th frame and Ron from the 6th frame, ended up with Dick beating Ron 244-225, and with a bonus of 30 pins for the win, a narrow 15 pin victory. Dave Smith, made a big move when he shot a 300 game and a 258 game in Games #7 & #8, only to run into a brick wall in Game #9, with 146, and then finished 6th in the tournament. Top 3: 1st Place, Dick Baker, $840.00, 2nd Place, Ron Winger (Las Vegas), $675.00, and 3rd to Frank De Filippo (Las Vegas), $510.00.

Total Entries: 33 bowlers and 11 checks paid out, a total of $4,665.00. For 4 tournaments this year, $28,845.00 paid out, and for 325 tournaments, $3,501,750.00 paid out. There was no Regular Divison for this tournament. The WCST would like to thank our hosting center, The Silver Nugget, and their workers for all of their cooperation. Joe Chattin, a great job, posting all scores and doing the Brackets on Saturday, and to EBONITE INTERNATIONAL CO, our coverage sponsor.

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSby Connie Marchione

MORE ABOUT APRIL 75TH GLDBA TOURNAMENT IN LAS VEGASLAS VEGAS—In wake of the shocking news of only 46 teams in the men’s 75th anniversary

Great Lakes Deaf Bowling Association and only 14 teams in the women’s 64th Great Lakes Deaf Women’s Bowling Association tournaments, no reason was given for this scarcity of entries. Back in 1996 the last time both proud organizations held their joint tournaments in Las Vegas, they drew deaf record breaking 188 and 76 teams respectively. That 1320 was the largest ever gathering of deaf bowlers. Regardless both organizations knew they made a mistake and the show must go on.

With ample lanes left over at Red Rock Bowling Center, GLDBA asked the women to drop theirs at Texas Station Bowling Center and move to bowl together under one roof. The schedule also had been changed with the respective Cahen Masters and Kernz Queens starting at 9 AM Wednesday April 6. Then on Thursday the doubles and singles events bowl with two squads, one at 10 am and other at 1:30 PM. On Friday the team event rolls at 10 PM and the Seniors Masters elimination start at 2 PM.

There will be no bowling on Saturday as the Hall of Fame Luncheon only is on at Red Rock Resort. It is a formal affair and all are requested to wear business suit with jacket, neat business shirt and slacks. The celebration will end in the evening with the floorshow provided by Cirque Du Sign in Red Rock Ballroom.

Nothing had been said about why the big drop in entries. It could be blamed on bad economy with people out of work, losing their homes and not affording the high entry fees (it cost me $360.00 to enter) plus the $100 plus per night at the hotel. This writer blamed poor publicity by GLDBA depending entirely on internet for its publicity. Many bowlers who do not have internet knew nothing and not getting any information about this tournament.

WHO IS THE GREATEST DEAF BOWLER? This question prompted me to put up when friend Ed Abakumoff read on internet about one

admitting that he is the greatest deaf bowler. I will not mention his name but that guy may be the best during an era but not all time.

So I am asking all of you for your opinion who you think is the greatest deaf bowler living or dead and why you think he is the one. You can answer by telling me on computer [email protected] and give me his name and reason.

If I get your opinion, I will write about it in this paper for all to read. Also if I do not get any, I will ask will known bowlers for their opinions and write about it.

In early 1940s I marveled at the late Pete Samolis of Cleveland, Ohio who was the first deaf bowler who averaged 200 back then when it was really hard to average 200. That was why I named him as one of three who should be in the USBC Hall f Fame before me in my Induction Ceremony speech. But after him, I had seen and known better great deaf bowlers.

YOMA LED DEAF TRAVEL WITH LOW 760 AT DEL RIODOWNEY—Blame it on the wet weather. So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League had a poor showing

at the usually high scoring Del Rio Lanes and the bowlers did not score well during the wet weather. Pablo Yoma led the 7 men honor roll when he started poorly with 146 but finished with 196-200-216 for 760. Following Yoma were Ed Abakumoff with 191-185-208-158 for 749, Robert Audette 155-187-194-191 for 727, Bob Bergan 156-153-200-212 for 721, Don Millwee 227, Bob Jones 212 and Connie Marchione 206.

Three teams made big wins. League leader stretched its lead to 10 points with a 15-5 win over 2nd place L A City. Lake Elsinore moved up to 3rd place with a near sweep win 18-2 over Mid City and Riverside beat China 13.5 to 8.5. The league thanks Del Rio manager Mike for hosting. Next on schedule is April 3 at Brunswick Covina Bowl in Covina where the manager begged us the start bowling at 12.00 Noon instead of our regular 1:00 PM starting time. Pres. Abakumoff requested all bowlers to show up at 11:30 AM so all could start at 12.

IRVINE—We had a long awaited return to Irvine Lanes Saturday, and had a decent turnout of 166 entries in our one day event. We saw a tough shot again this week that kept the cut scores low, but very fair to all. Making the cut to the Semis/Finals were +33 for the men and +24 for the wom-en. The Super Seniors added to the board (2 men and 1 fe-male) were Javier Avila (+32) and Steve Benavente (+17), and for the women it was Sheri Cross (-2). That would give us 48 bowlers making it this week in our special Beat the Board semi-finals.

For all qualifying squads, our top qualifier for the Men was Brad Le Count with a +125, and for the women it was Annaliza Agoncillo with a +103. Each will get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. Each week our top qualifier draws the Match Series, and this week it was worth $292. Brad drew a 525 and none bowled this score during qualifying this week.

Next week at West Covina, we will estimate the Match Series at $700. For the 3-6-9 qualifying this week, we had Charles Weeks survive the roll-off to go for the pot, but he would miss on his 4th shot, getting $50 consolation. We will add another $100 at West Covina giving us a total of $1,900.

In the optional doubles finishing first were Dom La Guardia and Vic Paolucci with a 1384 for $130. Finishing second was Dom and Jiradej

ABTA Returns to West Covina this weekendHarnpatanakitpanich with 1363 for $110. We had a total of $860 paid out in doubles with low to cash of 1319.

In the semis this week, we would see Chris Romero lead after the first game and follow-ing in 2nd was Hyun Oh Park. After two games, Chris at +115 would continue to lead the pack by 55+ pins, and still in 2nd was Hyun Park +77. Many were in the hunt, but Chris had a formidable lead in the final game.. Chris was in a nightmare as he bowled a 115 game and the others feel a bit also. We would see Jason Jones, and Ada Wong bowl nice games to come up just short, and Chris at 677 held on for a 19 pin victory over our 2nd place finisher, Jason Jones and a 22 pin advantage over our 3rd place finisher Ada Wong +55. In 4th was Vuong do+53, 5th Vic Paoluccu +49, 6th Sierrie Herradura + 46 and 7th a pretty newcomer Carole Reese at+40.

Congrats to Chris one of the Good Guys, as he led from start to finish using that big game 1 score of 280 with his handicap, to take home $1,000 for first place, $425 for cash and carry, and an additional $100 for using a Global 900 Ball during semis, giving him a total of $1,525. Jason would take home $500 for his 2nd place finish, and in 3rd was Ada Wong for $200.

This week, our top seed in semi-finals had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $2,560. Chris drew a 165. After a review of all the

scores bowled, we had three people who bowled that score. They were Ted Villaroman, Giang Huynh, and Julie Nguy-en. Each will get $853 for their 3rd game 165 scratch. The es-timated pot will be $1,400 at West Covina.

This week we had ten new bowlers join us. Let us wel-come these new bowlers to the club, James Cochran, Michael Modica, Chris Anson, Mike Johnston II, Nathan John-ston, Sam Hitchcock, Kevin Walther, Wai Li, Sean Perry, and Carole Reese who cashed 7th in her first ABTA event.

Champion Chris Romero is from Carson and used a Global 900 Vamp (he got the ball in our January tournament) drilled at South Point Pro Shop. He wants to thank God for all His guidance and support. Special thanks to his wife Delia for let-ting him bowl, ABTA and staff for a great job.

Jason Jones (2nd Place) is from Lakewood and used a Nano Storm drilled by Billy Myers. He is engaged to Me-gan, who he will be marrying on April 2nd. He would like to thank his Mom and Dad (Dave and Jean) from England, Rose, David and Brandi for being there, and of course to Mark Baker for the coaching. Ja-son will marry ABTA member Megan Cavanaugh this Sat-urday. We wish them well in their future together they are great People!!

This week, the weekly ball sponsor winner of a 900 Glob-al Ball was William Garrett, he received the Favorite bowling

ball. This week we raffled off (2) 1 night stays in Las Vegas for our July event. The win-ners were Renior Land and Carlos Umana. Each time you bowl, you get a free ticket for this prize given away by our Sponsor, 900 Global.

This week the raffle win-ners of an ABTA Entry was David Emrich, Memorial En-try was Wilson Cheung, Las Vegas Entry was Jowell Tatal-onghari, and winning a Bounty Hunter Pearl was William Gar-rett (his 2nd ball of the day-) Who says William don’t have two balls:_)) The rest of the results are in the payoff sheet in this paper.

WINNETKA — Today is the last day of March, but look at the happenings for the month April. Tomorrow, April 1st is a date that many people enjoy because if you’re not paying atten-tion to what they say or do, it could be an April Fool’s joke. Then, it’s pressure time if you haven’t done it yet because your Federal and State Income Taxes are due on April 15. All the pretty colors and egg hunts will be out for Easter on April 24. So looking ahead, it should be a great month and hopefully great weather for all to enjoy. And always remem-ber that Canoga Park Bowl is open 24-7 so come on over and enjoy bowling. PBA Senior Tour Returns to Florida to Kick Off 2011 Season

Sold-Out Field to Invade Winter Garden for Senior Don Carter OpenSEATTLE, Wash. (March 25, 2011) - The 2011 Professional Bowlers Association Senior Tour

season will get underway with a sold-out field of 120 players in the PBA Senior Don Carter Open at Carter Family Bowl in Winter Garden, Fla., April 17-21. The Senior Don Carter Open will be fol-lowed by another Florida stop when the 50-and-older generation returns to Spanish Springs Lanes in The Villages, Fla., April 23-26, after a one-season absence.

Heading up the 120-player field in Winter Garden will be PBA Hall of Famer and 2010 Senior Rookie of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla. The 2010 Senior Tour was one of the most exciting in history with a Senior Player of the Year race involving three Hall of Famers that was decided in the last tournament of the season. Wayne Webb secured Senior Player of the Year honors by winning the Senior Jackson Open, outlasting Williams and another Hall of Famer, Mark Williams of Beaumont, Texas.

W.R. Williams, who earlier in the 2010 season earned PBA Player of the Year, narrowly missed in his bid to become the first to win PBA Player and Senior Player of the Year honors in the same year. Named after one of bowling’s all-time greats, the Senior Don Carter Open, will also benefit two charities — United Cerebral Palsy and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Other stars scheduled to compete are PBA Hall of Famers Dave Soutar, Bradenton, Fla.; Johnny Petraglia, Jackson, N.J.; Tom Baker, King, N.C.; Dale Eagle, Frisco, Texas; and Ernie Schlegel, Vancouver, Wash. Also entered are 2009 Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alas-ka, and 1998 Senior Player of the Year Pete Couture, Titusville, Fla.

Other Florida standouts entered are five-time PBA Tour and one-time Senior Tour titlist Bob Handley of Winter Park, six-time Senior Tour and four-time PBA Tour winner Steve Neff of Ho-mosassa Springs and four-time Senior Tour and two-time PBA Tour winner Bob Chamberlain of The Villages.

Qualifying rounds will be conducted April 18-20 and match finals rounds on April 21. Practice rounds will be conducted the morning of April 17 with pro-am squads conducted at 1, p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. with a special youth pro-am conducted April 16 at 5 p.m. Pro-am entry informa-tion may be obtained by contacting Carter Family Bowl at (407) 656-2000. Tickets for qualifying and match play finals rounds are also available by calling Carter Family Bowl.

In addition to Carter Family Bowl, Playdrome Rose Bowl in Allentown, Pa., will be a first-time Senior Tour host when the PBA Senior Mark Roth Allentown Open is conducted May 21-24. The second major of the season, the USBC Senior Masters moves from Las Vegas to Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in Columbus, Ohio, July 31-Aug. 5.

time of his latest perfecto, Bob was bowling in two leagues, with a high average of 181.

Bob’s highest three game score was 896 (299 - 300 - 297) bowled in the middle of a block in the Kearsaw (pho-netic) Open, at LaHabra 300 Bowl in 1968. This scratch tourney was a non-sanctioned 40 gamer. FORTY GAMER! Oh, the good old days of mara-thon bowling. Bob wondered out loud... “do the kids today, with all their REVS, have the

stamina to bowl a 40 gamer?” Bob loves bowling at Trevi

Lanes and would like to thank FRANK MAZEIKAS of Strike Zone Pro Shop for drilling his equipment.

He also wants everyone to know he reads the BOWL-ING NEWS every week, and appreciates everything “our” bowling newspaper does for us. Anyone knowing of an older Citrus Belt bowler to bowl a perfect game should contact us.

After a few intense meet-ings, the National Bowling Stadium group convinced Mr. Mossontte that he was their man to head the greatest bowl-ing venue in the world. What an honor!

Will Bill Mossontte be missed in Southern Califor-nia?

I don’t think so, because this is the April 1st issue and Bill, it was YOUR turn. April Fools Readers!

SENG TONG’s “Jelly Buns” Help JAMES HAWKINS Roll 828!

by Frank Weiler MURRIETA — SENG TONG, owner of the MISS DONUTS

SHOP in the Sierra Vista Plaza, bowls in Cal Oak’s 640 Scratch League. He loves competing in the scratch league so much that he treats league bowlers to donuts - five dozen last week.

The “JELLY BUNS” were terrific. So good, that they fueled James Hawkins big night last week. Hawkins, an eighteen year old two-hander, rolled an 828 (300 - 249 - 279). He used his new Tropical Heat, drilled by MATT MURTISHAW of Fast Lanes Pro Shop.

Hawkins is regularly bowling big scores. He scored his first 300 when he was ten years old! Since then he has racked up numerous eight hundreds and three hundreds. His secret is 650 ball revolutions hitting the pins on every shot. That’s the power generated by the two handed delivery. TAKE

NOTE YOUNG BOWLERS: “THE FUTURE OF BOWL-ING IS IN YOUR TWO HANDS”.

League President JERRY DeYAGER thanked Seng for the donuts. Jerry’s team had a Baker’s Dozen of those tasty choco-late sparkles I love. We wish every reader could have joined our party last week, and want to thank the

Earthquake Strikes Japan, and US Bowlers Strike Back

by B.A. Campbell

ORANGE—Within 48 hours of the 9.0 earthquake in Japan, Southern California bowlers Glenn Wada and Marge Miyoda got together to raise funds for the bowling community in Japan. Not-ed bowling photographer Hero Noda was in Daly City, California for the JANBA (Japanese-American National Bowling Associa-tion) Tournament being held there; he wanted to help and agreed to take any money raised directly to Japan when he returned there March 20. These “bowlers helping bowlers across the sea” have taken the opportunity to raise and send 100% of funds directly to Japan, without any “administrative fee” involved. Ms. Mi-yoda explained that the Bowling Proprietors Association of Ja-pan (BPAJ) will be distributing the funds to those families of the Japanese bowling community hardest hit by the disaster.

So Cal leagues and individuals responded quickly and con-tributed generously. From the Tuesday am Niko Niko Ladies at Westminster Lanes; Wednesday pm Orange County Chinese Bowling Association Mixed and Thursday pm F.V. Nikkei Mixed leagues at Fountain Bowl; Thursday pm Sansei Mixed and Friday am Hawaiian Alley Cats Mixed leagues at Carter Bowl; Friday pm Tozai Mixed league at Keystone Lanes. Other generous do-nors were James & Jane Arita from Mountain View, HI; Tom & Kay Nakawatase from Torrance, CA; Margaret Tsujimoto from Oakland, CA; Don & Charlene Hillman from Surprise, AZ.

Within a week of the disaster, Mr. Noda returned to Japan with $2,921 in donations direct to Japan. According to Marge Miyoda, the BPAJ was “overwhelmed and very grateful for our support.” But, as anyone who can access the Internet and Google Maps can find out, the devastation to the Japanese society reaches far and wide. Other bowlers, hearing of Ms. Miyoda’s initial efforts, asked her to take more funds to distribute to those in Japan; in re-sponse, she has graciously agreed to continue to relay donations. Any amount will help and you will receive a receipt from Ms. Miyoda for your donation. Please make your checks payable to Marge Miyoda, and send to: 2002 E. Hillman Circle, Orange, CA 92867. For more information, email: [email protected]. Ms. Miyoda will deposit all donations in a special account and wire the funds to the Bowling Proprietors Association of Japan.

Midwest, Southwest, West/Northwest Finalists Square Off Sunday on ESPN in Dick

Weber PBA Playoffs’ Lucas Oil Regional Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Chris Barnes and Bill O’Neill will try to keep their long-shot bids for Professional Bowlers Asso-ciation Player of the Year honors alive during Sunday’s ESPN telecast of the Lucas Oil Regional Championship round of the inaugural Dick Weber PBA Playoffs at Woodland Bowl.

The ESPN telecast, featuring nine players competing for the final three berths in the April 10 PBA Playoffs Conference Championships, will air Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Barnes, who won the PBA World Championship in January to become the sixth member of the PBA Triple Crown club, and O’Neill, the 2010 Pepsi Viper Champion, are the only players who still have a chance to win two titles during the 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season, and put up a last-minute challenge to leading contender Mika Koivuniemi.

Koivuniemi won the $250,000 top prize in the $1 million PBA Tournament of Champions and became the first player in PBA history to appear in the television finals of all four PBA Tour major championships in a single season (PBA World Cham-pionship, Bayer USBC Masters and U.S. Open). Despite Koivu-niemi’s extraordinary season, Barnes and O’Neill also have had strong seasons and a second title could influence some voters.

O’Neill will bowl in the one-game Midwest Region champi-onship match against Jack Jurek and Wes Malott after qualify-ing second in his region. Jurek, the 2011 Bayer USBC Masters runner-up, led the region’s final elimination round. Malott, the 2008-09 PBA Player of the Year, grabbed the third spot and will try to end a two-year title drought.

Sunday’s Lucas Oil Regional Championships round also will include the Southwest and West/Northwest Region finals. The Southwest Region final will include Dino Castillo, a former Exempt Tour player who is trying for his first PBA Tour title; Australian two-handed star Jason Belmonte and Tour veteran Brad Angelo. Castillo was runner-up in the 2010 Japan Cup. Bel-monte, the 2008-09 Rookie of the Year, and Angelo, the 2002-03 Rookie of the Year, both are trying for their second career titles.

Barnes will be the West/Northwest Region favorite in a match featuring Lennie Boresch Jr. and Barnes’ former Wichita State University teammate, Lonnie Waliczek. The 48-year-old Bo-resch, a first-year Exempt Tour player, will make his national television debut in his bid for his first PBA Tour title. Waliczek is a two-time PBA Tour title winner who hasn’t won since 2003.

A preview of Sunday’s Regional Championships can be seen on pba.com’s Xtra Frame. To subscribe to the PBA’s exclusive online video streaming service, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame logo.

The Lucas Oil Regional Championships winners will ad-vance to the Conference Championships airing on Sunday, April 10, at 1 p.m. Eastern, where they will join the winners of the Go RVing Regional Championship round. East Region winner Steve Jaros will bowl one game against the South Region winner Randy Weiss, Central Region winner Dick Allen will take on the Midwest Region winner, and the Southwest winner will meet the West/Northwest winner.

The three Conference Championship survivors will return to Indianapolis on Sunday, April 17, at 1 p.m. Eastern for the final live ESPN telecast of the 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season.

Jaros, Weiss, Allen Advance to Conference Championships in PBA Playoffs Walter

Ray Williams Jr.’s record for titles in consecutive seasons ends at 17

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Seven-time Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour champion Steve Jaros of Yorkville, Ill.; 10-time PBA Regional winner Randy Weiss of Columbia, S.C., and two-time PBA Tour titlist Dick Allen, also of Columbia, S.C., advanced to the Conference Championships in the Dick Weber PBA Playoffs after victories in the Go RVing Regional Championships Round at Woodland Bowl.

The Go RVing Regional Championships Round, which aired Sunday on ESPN, featured three three-player regional champi-onship matches with the winners advancing to the Conference Championship Round, and the two lowest scores being elimi-nated. The Conference Championships will air Sunday, April 10, at 1 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

Jaros, who has now made a television appearance in 20 con-secutive seasons, nipped Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich., 258-257, to win the East Region championship. Scott Norton of Costa Mesa, Calif., finished third in the three-player East Re-gional final with a 224.

Weiss, in his national television debut, threw five strikes in a row to end his game and stun 12-time PBA Tour champ Tommy Jones of Greenville, S.C., 239-238, in the South Region cham-pionship. Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y., also was eliminated after rolling a 207 game.

Allen was nearly perfect in throwing a 289 game that elimi-nated Walter Ray Williams Jr. (221) of Ocala, Fla., and Mika Koivuniemi (201) of Hartland, Mich., in the Central Region fi-nale.

In the East Region championship, Jaros started with seven strikes before leaving back-to-back 10 pins, but Smallwood battled Jaros into the 10th frame. Jaros finished first, throwing a strike on his first ball in the 10th and filling the frame with a 10 pin/spare. Smallwood needed the first strike to win, but left a 7 pin. After converting the spare, he then needed a strike to tie Jaros, but he left a 4 pin on his fill ball.

Jaros said he thought the match would be close, but “I figured it would be Tom or me versus Scott after the way he bowled in practice. But Scott just didn’t look comfortable once the show started.”

Weiss was the surprise of the day with his clutch finish to nip Jones after a horrible break ended Shafer’s hopes. Shafer was very much in the hunt, but trying to extended a double in the eighth and ninth frames, the four-time PBA Tour winner left a 7-10 split on a pocket hit in the 10th frame to end his chances.

At the same time, Jones overcame the carry issues he had dur-ing the first half of his game, stringing five strikes before leaving a 4 pin on his fill ball in the 10th frame. That pin gave Weiss an opportunity to strike out in the 10th to win by one pin.

“I knew I was going to have to strike because these guys are really good,” Weiss said, “but they are human, so I knew I had to stay in my world and see what happens.

“My thought in the last frame was that there is no way you could ask for anything better than an opportunity to win in the 10th, so I told myself to get a good shot off my hand and let the chips fall where they may.

“Mike Machuga may have given me the best advice when he said it’ll be the fastest 10 minutes of your life, so slow it down in your mind as much as you can, and that’s exactly what I did,” Weiss added. “I just kept slowing my thoughts and not watching what they were doing, and I focused on what my job was.”

In the Central Region match, Allen and Williams both started with five strikes while Koivuniemi struggled to strike after start-ing with a double. Williams’ string ended when he also left a pocket 7-10 in the sixth frame, but Allen kept on striking un-til leaving a 10 pin on his 11th attempt. By that time, thanks to a 4-6-7-10 split by Williams in the ninth frame, the match was over.

“I followed all of the old clichés – keep your head down, don’t watch what they’re doing, make one shot at a time – and that’s exactly what I did,” Allen said. “I wasn’t worried about anybody else. I know when I throw it good, I can strike with the best of them.”

Allen has a history of being one of the PBA Tour’s more vola-tile players, but after the birth of his first child in early March, “I came here with less negative thoughts,” he said. “I’ve got some cool pictures on my phone, I’m smiling more because of (daugh-ter Piper). My mind’s in a different place and I’m not so upset if I make a bad shot. And I’m not making as many bad shots because of a grip change and a swing change I made, and those are prob-ably the keys to success more than anything.

“I got away with about three bad shots,” Allen added. “That was probably the highest 220 game I’ve ever shot; let’s put it that way. Without a doubt I knew I was going for 300. When Walter got that second split in the ninth frame and I knew the match was over, I told myself to finish it off. Unfortunately I threw a really good shot in the 10th and they didn’t fall.”

The Lucas Oil Regional Championships Round will complete the field for the Conference Championships. On Sunday, April 10, the Conference Championships telecast at 1 p.m. Eastern will include the East Region winner (Jaros) against the South (Weiss), the Central (Allen) vs. the Midwest winner, and the Southwest vs. the West/Northwest winner. Those three winners will return to Woodland Bowl on Sunday, April 17, for the live ESPN finals at 1 p.m. Eastern.
