Remember A man went to the doctor because of his failing memory. “Doctor, I’m getting to the point where I can’t remember anything anymore.” “How long have you had this problem?” The man answered, “What problem?” A key word in Deuteronomy is remember. Deuteronomy 8:1-2, “All the commandments that I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and posses the land which the Lord swore to give to your forefathers. And you shall remember all the ways which the Lord your God has led you.” Deuteronomy 8:18, “But you shall remember the Lord your God for it is he who is giving your power to make wealth.” So God was calling upon his people to remember what he had done for them, and in so doing, it would make a difference in the way they lived. Let me pass along a few fundamental things we need to remember. 1. Where we came from. We came from God. God wanted to share His aliveness with us and He created us in His image. That means we have value, worth, meaning. Our worth is neither conferred nor withheld by what other people say or think. That’s already been determined by our being made in the very image of God. We must not forget this. 2. We need to remember why we’re here. A document called “The Shorter Catechism,” written in 1647, begins with the question, “What is the chief end of man?” The answer is, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.” That’s why we’re here - to glorify God. 1 Corinthians 12:31, “Whether then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 3. We also need to remember where we are going. A preacher was visiting in the home of an elderly sister. As he was about to leave he said, “You must think a lot about the hereafter.” She responded, “I sure do, preacher. When I go from one room to another, I always ask myself, now, what am I hereafter?” We need to think about the hereafter. Our final destination is heaven. That’s where we want to go. Peter said we have an inheritance, reserved in heaven for us. So let’s all remember where we came from, why we’re here, and where we’re going. - Allan Eldridge
