En route to victory - 2This deal was featured on page 2 of yesterday’s

Daily Bulletin. However, we have since determinedthat we misread Barry Rigal’s notes, so the play ofthe deal was attributed to the wrong person and thewrong team.

The deal occurred in the match between JimFoster’s team, the squad that eliminated the defend-ing champions captained by Reese Milner, and theteam captained by Richard Pavlicek. Pavlicek tookover the No. 1 seed by defeating Foster, but it wasAllen Hawkins of the Foster team who found thestrip-squeeze on this deal.

Here is a repeat of the writeup putting the play-ers in their correct positions.

Michael Kamil led a heart, and Hawkins wonthe jack with the queen. Hawkins led the ♣Q,ducked, but the second club went to East’s ace.Martin Fleisher tried the ♠J, won in dummy withthe queen, and declarer called for a low diamond.Fleisher rose with the king and Hawkins ducked.Fleisher switched back to hearts, leading the 10,and Hawkins took his king.

When Hawkins now cashed his three goodclubs, he caught East in a strip-squeeze. If Fleisherdiscarded down to two hearts, he could be end-played into leading away from his diamonds. If hesluffed a diamond, declarer could win the ace andjack. Either way Hawkins had his game.

OverkillBy Barry Rigal

The definition of overkill is a complex one atbridge. Sometimes it could come about as thedefensive problem of having too strong a combinedholding against notrump. More typically though, itrelates to what happens when one side gets two out-standing results on the same deal and the IMP scaledoes not reflect it. From our second-roundVanderbilt match this example left both pairs feel-ing very happy.

You may not agree with John Diamond’s handevaluation – it was understandably successfulthough! Playing in hearts, the club loser in Northcan be discarded on the long spade. Plus 1430meant a 15-IMP pickup for the good guys.

Solving the puzzleHaig Tchamitch, aka Hagar the Horrible,

threaded his way through the maze to land a vulner-able game on this deal from the early rounds of theVanderbilt Knockout Teams.

Tchamitch, South, received the opening lead ofthe ♣6, which went to the 4, 7 and king. Clearly, there was work to do.

Tchamitch played the ♠Q to the king in dummyand played the ♥2 to the 5, 9 and king. Anotherspade put Tchamitch in dummy again, and heplayed a diamond to the 9 in his hand. West won the♦J and got out with a trump. Tchamitch won inhand and played the ♦Q, covered by the king andace. On the third round of diamonds, East’s 10popped up. Tchamitch ruffed, played a heart todummy’s 10 and threw a club on the now-good ♦8.

It might appear that Tchamitch would havegone down had East won the ♣A at trick one to givehis partner a ruff. Not so.

If East wins the ♣A and returns a club,Tchamitch ducks, but the defenders get only onemore trick. West could ruff and return a spade, butTchamitch would be in control. He cashes the sec-ond spade and plays the ♥A and another heart. Westwould be endplayed, forced to lead away from the♦K or give a ruff and a sluff with a spade return.

Plus 620 was good for 13 IMPs for Tchamitch’steam. At the other table, North-South were pushedto 5♥ and went down two.

What’s that again? Here’s a question a player asked a director:“If my partner were here, is this where he’d

be?”

Runners-up in the Mixed Pairs were Jay Baum, chief executive officer of the ACBL, and hiswife Kathy. It was only the second time theyhad ever played in an NABC event – a yearago they tried the Mixed Pairs and failed toqualify. What a difference a year can make! Inour report on the Mixed Pairs yesterday, thevery last word of the article was missing. Jay’sfull quote was, “My wife played perfect!”

Real men don’tneed real stoppers

Remember when Zeke Jabbour said “Real mendon’t need real stoppers” when he was a member ofthe It’s Your Call panel? Two deals he has playedhere prove that he puts his bidding cards where hismouth is.

After Judy Gushner of Philadelphia bid dia-monds and spades, Jabbour decided to take achance that the ♥K would cure any heart attack.Sure enough, East led his fourth-best heart and sud-denly Jabbour had 12 tricks.

But wait! The ♥J was a threat against East andthe ♦J was a threat against West, so neither defend-er could hold onto spades. So Jabbour wound upwith all 13 tricks.

The next deal is an even better illustraton of the“real man” theory.

Jabbour didn’t want to bid diamonds, so hedecided to gamble on his queen doubleton spade. When West led a low spade and dummy was faced,Jabbour gasped. He could visualize ace or kingtripleton on his right, which would lead to a three-trick set. But East played the jack! West had ledaway from the ace-king to maintain communica-tion. Jabbour gratefully took his queen and ran his11 tricks.

Losing tricksBy Barry Rigal

When you take on Malcolm Brachman’s team, you have to take advantage of your opportunities. Here’s one that got away:

It’s not easy to avoid playing 4♥ here, but my2NT opening bid saw Jeff Aker transfer to heartsand then offer notrump. I was happy to play for aswing by trying the notrump game.

I was favored with a low spade lead to the 9and 10. Now the obvious thing to do is to play onhearts. But how? I decided to make my best playfor holding my losses to two by running the ♥J,losing to the queen.

Eddie Wold found the fine club shift – and Iwas toast when diamonds did not split and Westturned up with the long club and the heart entry.

But of course I had misanalyzed the deal. Theright play is to lead a heart to the king at trick two. IfI did that, the defense wouldn’t be able to stop mefrom setting up a ninth winner in clubs or hearts.

Even our “triumphs” turned into disasters. Irarely open 10 counts, but late in the match atfavorable vulnerability I broke my rule.

round, learning that West had started with a singleton. The problem, of course, was who had the ♣Q. Therewere 11 cards remaining that West could hold butonly nine for East because East was known to havefour trumps. So the odds favored playing the handwith the singleton trump for the ♣Q.

But Rosenkranz had that hunch. Finally hewent for the hunch and finessed East for the keycard. The hunch paid off – East had queen-third ofclubs. 7♠ bid and made.

The Facts: 2♠ doubled made two, +670 forN/S. The play had gone: ♦2 to the ace; ♥A; heartto the king; ♦K; ♥2 to the queen (pitching a club);♠AK; ♦Q ruffed; ♥10 (pitching a second club). The board was scored and later passed to the othertable where it was discovered that the South handcontained 14 cards (including five clubs) and theEast hand only 12 cards (including only two clubs).

Consequently the Director was called. Whenhe took the board back to the first table and had theSouth and East players check their hands, East wassure he had held only the ♣Q8 and South was sureshe had held only four clubs. (Clubs had never beenplayed.)

The Director ruled that the table result at thefirst table would stand and that a club spot (the ♣3)would be removed from the South hand and placedin the East hand.

The Appeal: E/W appealed the Director’s rul-ing. Each player was asked if they had countedtheir cards. N/S said they always counted theircards while East said he usually does but had notthis time. East said he had been upset by thedefense on the previous board and was distracted. However, he did say he had noticed dummy’sclubs. West said he noticed nothing.

The Panel Decision: The Panel decided that thepreponderance of the evidence suggested that theconditions of Law 13C (which instructs that whenit is determined after play ends that one hand orig-inally contained more than 13 cards and anothercorrespondingly fewer, the result must be canceledand an appropriate procedural penalty applied)should not apply. All the players had seen thedummy and no one had called attention to the pres-ence of an extra card. Thus, both sides weredeemed responsible for the problem. With no basisfor overturning the table ruling, the Panel decidedto allow the table result to stand.

(1) Alerted; takeout

The Facts: 5♣ doubled made five, +550 forE/W. The opening lead was the ♦Q. The Directorwas called when West explained before the openinglead that he believed their agreement was that 4♣was natural.

The Director ruled that West had forgotten hisagreement, that the 5♣ bid could have been sug-gested by the Alert of 4♣, and that passing 4♠ dou-bled was a logical alternative. Thus the contractwas changed to 4♠ doubled.

The Director determined that various defensesled to results ranging from 4♠ making to 4♠ goingdown more than one trick. By ducking two roundsof spades and playing on hearts, the defense wouldcome to five tricks. This was judged to be the mostfavorable result likely (Law 12C2) for N/S, andboth sides were assigned the score for 4♠ doubleddown two, +300 for N/S.

The Appeal: E/W appealed the Director’s rul-ing. E/W both admitted that they played cheaperminor for takeout (as was Alerted and explained byEast) and that West had forgotten the convention.

West believed that passing 4♠ was not a logi-cal alternative. He knew from the auction thatspades were breaking badly and it seemed impossi-ble that 4♠ could ever make. Partner did not over-call directly over 3♦ and therefore could not havea good hand with five spades.

On the other hand he contended that there weremany East hands where 5♣ would make and whichwould provide no play for 4♠. Later on West saidhe had to bid 5♣ because East did not yet know hehad clubs. N/S contended that the West hand wasan attractive hand to be dummy in 4♠ and that passwas therefore a logical alternative.

The Committee Decision: The Committeedecided that the unauthorized information from theAlert and explanation could have awakened West to

the fact that he had forgotten his conventionalagreement. West apparently did not completelyunderstand the rule concerning unauthorized infor-mation when he stated that East did not yet knowhe had clubs. The Committee also decided that passwas a logical alternative to 5♣ which was demon-strably suggested by the unauthorized information.

The Committee then considered the play in 4♠doubled. The Committee assumed that Southwould lead his singleton diamond, which gives thedefense its best prospects. The declarer play prob-lem on this deal is complex and the Committeeconsidered many reasonable lines of play coupledwith good defense, and finally concluded that +300was the most favorable result that was likely for thenon-offending side.

They also determined that some inferior lines ofplay could lead to +500 for N/S and that these met the“at all probable” standard of Law 12C2. Accordingly,–500 was also awarded to the offenders.

Since E/W were both experienced players(although they had not played much in recentyears), the Committee assigned them an AppealWithout Merit Warning.

ently still has currency among newer players.“They don’t realize you aren’t going to be in thesame room with the experts,” says McCarthy. “Youlisten to their talks then you go play bridge withother new players.”

Both are fairly new to duplicate. McCarthy saysshe “came in off the street” as a duplicate player aftersome years of social bridge. “I’m very competitive,”she says, “and when I realized what kind of an ani-mal duplicate is I was immediately hooked.”

Her father expresses similar sentiments, allow-ing that both of them began bridge lessons after afew duplicate games to try to speed up theirimprovement.

Both said the tournament directors running theI/N games are a huge part of their success. “Thedirectors are fantastic,” says Edwards. Echoes hisdaughter: “They are friendly, funny and fair. We’rehaving a blast.”

The two I/N players with the most success atthe Spring NABC are a pair from Connecticut: BillFilip of New Canaan and Warren Williams ofWilton. Through Thursday afternoon, the retiredIBM employees had racked up 19.34 masterpointsin I/N games even though they had played in someother events as well.

Both described the atmosphere as ideal for new

players. “It’s a very friendly, relaxed game,” saysWilliams. Adds Filip: “We like to play for fun asopposed to heavy competition.”

They, too, praised the I/N directors. “I’m real-ly impressed with the skill they show,” saysWilliams.

The pair, who learned bridge many years agobut returned to the game only after retirement, saythey have been to every NABC since the 2001Summer NABC in Toronto.

Larry Gomberg, who drove from Fairfax VAThursday morning to play with J.J. Armour, a long-time partner, says he was pleased to run into sever-al players he met in Phoenix at the 2002 FallNABC there. He enjoys the I/N games, he says, because “it’s not intimidating at all. It’s just fun.”

Two locals – Diane Davis of Penn Valley andSuxan Baxter of Gladwyne – describe their experi-ence at the NABC as “amazingly exciting.” SaysDavis: “We get to play with people from all overthe country.”

Baxter says she likes bridge so much because“it’s a thinking game, and defense is a lot of fun.”

Betty Bratcher is one of the tournament direc-tors running the I/N games. She has high praise forthe members of the NABC organizing committeefor getting the new players out to the I/N games.“The locals have done a great job,” says Bratcher.

Other I/N directors are Judy Cotterman, AliceKinningham, Donna Bowser and Priscilla Smith.

Philadelphia so far. Before last year, Waterworth, 30, didn’t know

anything about bridge. She did know about compe-tition, however.

Waterworth went to the University of SouthCarolina on a tennis scholarship in 1991, earning abusiness degree upon graduation in 1994. She laterbecame a chartered accountant and was working inthat field before deciding it wasn’t for her. Onegood thing about that field, she says, is that she mether husband, Bob, also a chartered accountant.

In a major career change, Waterworth wentfrom accounting to working in a golf shop. It wasthere that she was steered to bridge. “All my golffriends said I had to learn bridge,” she says.

Her teacher turned out to be Seagram. “Barbaraand Alex (Kornel, Seagram’s husband) made it funfor me. They told me diamonds are for your fingersand clubs are for golf. They’re no good in bridge.”

Waterworth’s typical day now is to get up early, sign onto the computer, exchange a few e-mailswith Eddie Kantar (yes, that Eddie Kantar) andcheck out one of the many bridge software pro-grams she owns. “I’ve got every disk,” she says.

She also plays regularly at club games. Starkreports on a very creative play by Waterworth onthis deal from one of their club sessions.

Waterworth cashed her top spades, declarerpitching a diamond from dummy, and switched to the♥6. Declarer played low from dummy and Stark, thinking declarer had the jack, put in the king. Therewas no point in continuing hearts, so Stark switchedto the ♦Q, which held. West took the next diamondtrick with the ace and cashed the king, noting the 3-3split. Declarer, obviously eyeing the club suit fortricks, threw the ♥9 on the third round of diamondsand the ♥10 on the 13th diamond.

When West, who had neglected to cash thegood ♠J, played a low club from hand, Waterworthsmoothly played the queen. West won in dummy, returned to hand with the ♣A, and, still neglectingthe ♠J, played a club to dummy’s 9. Stark won the10 and Waterworth’s ♥A J took the last two tricksfor plus 200.

“One of Heather’s assets,” says Stark, “is hersmooth play on defense.”

Waterworth has had so much fun at the SpringNABC in Philadelphia that she’s planning on mak-ing every NABC for the foreseeable future. She’sreally keen to meet Kantar.

By the time she gets around to that, she may bewinning major championships. She certainly hasthe desire: “I want to be good at this game.”

Says Stark: “She shows a lot of promise.”

Weinstein led the ♥Q and Bjerkan decidedthat, with no redouble or heart raise, her partnerhad the singleton queen or queen-doubleton.Accordingly, she won her ♥A and shifted to the ♦J.When that held, she continued with the ♦K and alow diamond.

Weinstein cashed two diamond tricks anddeclarer was already down one. Noting that declar-er had pitched one spade and two clubs fromdummy on the diamond tricks, Weinstein shifted toa low club. Declarer won dummy’s ace and cashed

two more club tricks. When the suit did not run, she mistakenly

cashed her heart tricks before reverting to spades. As a result, Bjerkan was able to win her ♥A andcash a long heart for down three.

Whitehead Trophy, donated in 1930 by Wilbur C.Whitehead of New York, a great bridge authorityand a member of the team that won the VanderbiltCup in 1928, the first year it was in play.

Whitehead (1866-1931) was president of theSimplex Automobile Company, but bridge heldsuch a fascination for him that he retired from busi-ness in 1910 to devote his life to bridge.

He was the inventor of many bidding and playconventions, the quick-trick table of card values, the Whitehead system of requirements for originalbids and responses and the Whitehead table of pref-erential leads.

Whitehead was instrumental in standardizingprocedures in auction bridge and later in contractbridge.

First-time partners Curtis Cheek and Eric Grecobuilt on a monster game in the second qualifying ses-sion to win Open Pairs II last year in Houston. (Thefinal two sessions of this year’s event are taking placetoday.)

Cheek and Greco had never played togetherbefore, making the Open Pairs II date at the lastminute. They were the leaders after two qualifyingsessions, thanks to a 75.58% game in the secondqualifying session. “You wouldn’t believe the thingswe didn’t know we were doing,” said Cheek.

Greco went after an opponent’s one-level over-call to gain most of the matchpoints on this deal fromthe second final session:

Greco made a good decision to convert the neg-ative double at these colors. The opening lead of the♣2 went to Greco’s king. The spade return was wonby declarer’s king (West ducked the ace).

South tried a low diamond toward dummy andthe ♦Q was captured by the ace. Greco exited with adiamond to Cheek’s king. The ♠A was next (Eastpitching his last diamond) and Cheek continued witha diamond which Greco ruffed low.

Declarer ruffed Greco’s ♣A and played the ♥9.East won the king and returned the ♣3. Declarerpitched the ♠10, allowing dummy’s ♣J to win thetrick. The ♣9 was next and declarer shed the ♠K.

West ruffed and returned a spade, which Grecoruffed high. He then led the last club to promoteWest’s ♥J. Down three, plus 800.

* * *Play begins today in the four-session Open Pairs

II with the Wernher Trophy, donated by one of theoriginators of the masterpoint system, as a reward for

the winners. The Werner Trophy was donated in 1934 by Sir

Derrick J. Wernher and presented to the winners ofthe National Men’s Pairs Championship.

The event was contested at the Summer NABCuntil 1962 and subsequently at the Spring NABC.From 1969 through 1971, it was contested as a three-session championship.

In 1992 the event became Open Pairs II, a four-session event which consists of two qualifyingrounds and two finals rounds.

Wernher (1889-1947) was a resident of London,England and Deal NJ. A leading personality inAmerican bridge in the Thirties, Wernher was presi-dent of the American Bridge League (ABL) in 1933,chairman of its Master Plan committee and a mem-ber of the board of directors of the American WhistLeague (AWL).

Wernher placed second in the Asbury ChallengeTeams (now the Spingold Knockout Teams) in 1936and won the Reisinger (played in conjunction withthe New York regional) in 1930.

Open Pairs II was exciting last year

It takes two! Each player is required to have a convention card

filled out legibly and on the table throughout a ses-sion. Both cards of a partnership must be identicaland include the first and last names of each memberof the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player has asubstantially completed card, the partnership mayplay only Class A conventions and may use onlystandard carding. This restriction may be lifted onlyat the beginning of a subsequent round after conven-tion cards have been properly prepared and approvedby the director. Further, the partnership will receive a1/6 board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuinguntil the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has atleast one substantially completed convention card buthas not fully complied with ACBL regulations, thedirector may give warnings or assign such penalties ashe deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties isthe encouragement of full compliance with ACBLregulations.

If your partnership plays pre-Alertable Mid-Chart or Super-Chart opening bids or overcalls inevents which permit such methods, you must fillout one of the new pre-Alert/Disclosure forms foreach such method that you play and make themavailable to your opponents before the start of eachround or match segment.

This applies to any event, NABC+ or regional, which permits Mid-Chart or Super-Chart methods.Look for the light blue forms on the tables whereconvention cards and pencils are located.

A Senior momentBy Glenn Grotheim

On day two of the Vanderbilt, the Grant Bazesquad faced the Swedish Junior national team thathad pulled an upset over the Richard Schwartz sex-tet on opening day. On this deal, Michael Whitmanshowed the Juniors how the Seniors play. Whitmanwas playing with team captain Grant Baze.

At the other table, North-South stopped ingame and won 11 tricks for plus 450. Whitman andBaze bid the good heart slam. Whitman got the ♠Qopening lead. He rose with the ace, ruffed a spadeand then played the ♣J from hand. West didn’tcover, so Whitman discarded a diamond fromdummy.

When the ♣J held, Whitman ruffed a low cluband played a trump to his ace, discovering the badbreak.

Next came another low club ruffed in dummy, then the top diamonds and a diamond ruff. Thiswas the position:

Whitman ruffed the ♣Q with the ♥Q and Eastwas forced to pitch his last diamond. WhenWhitman led a spade from dummy, East – down toall trumps – had to split his trump honors to keepWhitman from making his 12th trick with the ♥9.That only postponed the inevitable, however, asWhitman discarded the ♣A and had the ♥K 9 overEast’s ♥J 4 in the end for plus 980 and an 11-IMPswing on the way to victory.

Honor your partnerBy Mark Horton

Consider your partner to be a friend. Treat yourpartner well, even (especially) if you are playingtogether for the first time. Always offer your partnera drink — tea or coffee is a good starting point. Thiswill lead to a relaxed atmosphere, enabling you bothto play your best. By the way, always be a pleasantand courteous opponent.

Tolerate errors. Never go on about partner’s mis-takes — just forget about them and move on to thenext deal. You may be able to make a constructivecomment at the end of the session. Your partner willsurely show you the same consideration.

Be encouraging. Always be prepared to supportyour partner — “well played” always goes down welland a “thank you” for the dummy does not go amiss. In one of my partnerships, if dummy was exactlywhat was needed, “mille grazie” would let partner inon the good news!

Keep a straight face. Never make the mistake ofpulling a face or raising an eyebrow. Apart from hurt-ing your partner’s feelings, being deadpan does notlet your opponents know that something may havegone wrong.

Win or lose, always stay calm at the end of thesession and thank partner for the game. This is espe-cially important if things have not gone so well. Inmy most successful international partnership, the firsttime we played together was absolutely hopeless butwe stuck with it.

The best way to cope with the inevitable disastersis to laugh them off. This tends to disconcert even thebest opponents who are used to seeing their oppo-nents argue.

Stick to the conventions you both feel comfort-able with. A player trying to remember some conven-tion he is not familiar with will make errors in otherdepartments.

Seven-year-old Morgan Compton couldn’t waitto play in the Midnight Zip Knockout Teamsearlier in the tournament. She and her father,Chris Compton, playing with her mother,Donna Compton, and ACBL Chief TournamentDirector Rick Beye, won one match and mighthave done better if Dad hadn’t bid a grandslam off an ace. Although Morgan didn’t takeDad to task about his error, she was reportedlyspotted at the Baron Barclay booth looking fora book on Blackwood.

Special I/N award.NABC Philadelphia will award a mini-library

of bridge books plus a 30-minute lesson by tele-phone with Marty Bergen to the top masterpointwinner in the I/N category.
