“501” River News - March 2018 - 3
From the DirectorHappy March Everyone!! Spring is creeping up on us and I’m excited that winter is almost over.
As we kicked off our annual fundraiser for our food programs this year, the name of the event has a whole different meaning. “Ken’s March Against Senior Hunger” was started in memory of our dear team member, Ken Fader. He was a Meals on Wheels driver, who unexpectedly passed away in January. Ken was one of the good guys with much passion about the program and serving our seniors.
If you are interested in helping to raise funds you can do so by mailing a donation, picking up a fundrais-ing packet to share with family and friends, reaching out to groups or organizations you may be affiliated with, or by donating at the center. It doesn’t matter how big or small the donation is…it all adds up at the end. Our event wrap-up, to say thanks and pamper our supporters, will be held on April 26th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Hospice of Michigan office.
As always, my door is open to each of you for any assistance you may need. Have a great month!

“Journey Through Grief”This is a six-week series facilitated by Stacy Malenfant, the Grief Support Services Manager for Hospice of Michigan, starting Monday, March 26th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. These meetings will provide an understanding of what we may experience as we grieve the death of a loved one. To know that we are not alone, that others feel as we do, may provide assurance and assist us in healing.
Please call BJ at 356-3585 for additional information or to sign up for the series.
Healthy Eating with Tips on Cooking For OneAny single person will tell you that cooking for one is an entirely different ballgame than cooking for two people or more. There are all sorts of random and unexpected challenges that can come with grocery shopping, stocking a kitchen, meal planning, recipe scaling, and more.
Join us on March 14th at 10:30 am as Amy Atwell, a Nutrition Instructor from MSU Extension, teaches healthy eating with tips on cooking for one. Call BJ at 356-3585 for additional information or to reserve a spot.

Are you Singing the Blue Cross Blues? Did you happen to receive a new rate notice that your Blue Cross Blue Shield of MI premium is increasing? The new rate will take effect on April 1 (this is no April Fool’s joke) so the increase will be billed on March 25 for April’s premium. In December, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) approved Blue Cross’ rate requests ranging
from 1.2% to a maximum of 15% to be effective April 1, 2018.
What you need to know is your letter from Blue Cross lists your full premium rate without any subsidy that you might already be getting. If you get a subsidy right now – you will continue to get it through December, 2018. Blue Cross didn’t show or subtract the subsidy in your letter. That’s because your subsidy comes from another organization – Michigan Health Endowment Fund. Check it out – the last sentence of your letter says, “Be mindful that this new rate is above the amount you’ll pay before any subsidies for which you may qualify are applied.” So, if you are getting a subsidy of $40, $65 or $125, then you need to subtract it from your new premium. For example, if your letter says your new rate is $267.77 and you are already getting a subsidy of $65, then you need to subtract $65 from $267.77. So, in April you would pay $202.77.
Lots of you are asking, what can I do about the increase? At the bottom of your letter on page 3, there is an address for the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services. Write them! Tell them how this increase is going to affect you. Tell them exactly what you’ve been telling me: Tell them how your 2% Social Security raise was taken to pay your Part B Medicare premium (so you really didn’t get a raise at all). Tell them that you considered dropping your insurance because you can’t afford anymore costs. Tell them that as a couple you are trying to decide who between you is sicker so you can keep that insurance and drop the other. Tell them that between heating bills, health care, prescriptions and other bills, living on a fixed Social Security income doesn’t allow for increases like this. Tell them that Blue Cross was at $122.86 in December 2016 now it’s going to be $___. (How Much?) Right now, I am gathering your rate information and charting the increases for as many seniors as I can. I would love to include your information and would need a copy of the following: your Blue Cross premium letter, your current BCBSM bill and, if you write one – a copy of your letter to the US Dept. of Health & Human Services.
Some of you have asked, “Can I change to another Medigap?” Maybe. I recommend you talk to your insurance agent or local insurance agency to find out. Medigap insurance policies are generally allowed to use medical underwriting to decide whether to accept your new application and how much to charge for the new Medigap policy. So, if you’ve been treated for cancer, stroke, heart attack, or diabetes with complications it would be best to contact your insurance agent to find out if 1) you would be eligible to change policies AND 2) what your premium would be. DON’T EVER DROP YOUR CURRENT MEDIGAP UNTIL YOU ARE ACCEPTED INTO A NEW PLAN.
BUT Wait! If you just said, “What Subsidy?” You might be eligible for a subsidy ($40, $65, or $125 depending on your age) from Michigan Health Endowment Fund if you have a household income of $26,730 or less for one person OR $36,045 or less for two people. Income includes your Social Security before anything is taken out (like Part D Medical premiums), pensions, annuities and/or any other income that can be reported on your income tax. Some of you may not be required to fill out income tax. That’s okay – you would use your annual Social Security letter and/or pension statement as proof of income. To qualify for the subsidy and in addition to the income guidelines above, you must have Medicare, be a Michigan resident and have a Medigap from a participating insurer (Blue Care Network, BCBS of Michigan, Priority Health, or United Healthcare AARP). If you think that you would qualify, please call me to schedule an appointment.

Kinship SupportMany grandparents and other relatives count on a time, later in life when they can take a break from some of life’s hectic demands. For kinship caregivers, that time never comes. Unexpectedly they are asked to raise children for the second time around, often without adequate family, financial, or community support. As a result, kinship caregivers commonly report that they feel alone in their struggles. If you find yourself in this position, please know that you are not alone, we are here for you. Kinship Support Group meetings will be held on the fourth Tuesday of each month. March 27th from 10:30 am to 11:30 am will be our first meeting. Please contact BJ or Annie at 989-356-3585 to sign up for this group or for additional information.
Save The DateSock HopApril, 14th
Early-Stage Alzheimer’s SupportAlzheimer’s Association early-stage support groups, conducted by trained facilitators, are a safe place for people living in the Early Stages of Dementia to:
• Develop a support system
• Exchange practical information of challenges and possible solutions
• Talk through issues and ways of coping
• Share feelings, needs and concerns
• Learn about community resources
Support Group meetings will be on the second Thursday of each month. March 8, 2018 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm we will be having our next meeting here at the Alpena Senior Center. Please contact BJ or Annie at 989-356-3585 to sign up or for additional information.

National Tamale DayIf you have ever eaten tamales, you know the taste of pillowy, stone-ground corn mingling with delicious fillings, like spicy pulled pork in chile sauce, or melted cheese. National Tamale Day – March 23rd – offers the perfect excuse to celebrate this traditional Latin American dish.
A tamale is a pocket of simple corn dough, called masa, stuffed with anything from meat and cheese to fruit and vegetables. Each one is wrapped in a corn husk or a banana leaf and steamed or boiled before eating.
We are taking orders for “Flo’s Homemade Tamales”. These tamales are a delicious combination of pork, spices and masa with a husk on the outside. Please place your order by March 16th. All funds raised will go towards our “Ken’s March Against Senior Hunger” fundraiser.
Flo’s Homemade Tamales
½ dozen for $7.50Or
1 dozen for $12.00
Please specify hot or mild
Call us at the Senior Center, 356-3585, to order your tamales in time to enjoy them on National Tamale Day.
National Nutrition Month“Go Further with Food” is the theme for 2018, and its importance is timely for many reasons. The foods you choose can make a real difference such as starting the day off with a healthy breakfast. Preparing your foods to go further, by planning meals and snacks in advance can also help to reduce food loss and waste. This year’s theme for National Nutrition Month encourages us to achieve the numerous benefits healthy eating habits offer, but it also urges us to find ways to cut back on food waste. Learning how to manage food resources at home will help you “Go Further with Food”, while saving both nutrients and money.
• Include a variety of healthful foods from all the food groups on a regular basis.
• Consider the foods you have on hand before buying more at the store.
• Buy only the amount that can be eaten or frozen within a few days and plan ways to use leftovers later in the week.
• Be mindful of portion sizes. Eat and drink the amount that’s right for you, as MyPlate encourages us to do.
• Continue to use good food safety practices.
• Find activities that you enjoy and be physically active most days of the week.

“501” River News - March 2018 - 13
I was born in Pontiac Michigan. Michigan is my state, but I lived a lot of my life in Illinois. My folks were up here and retired in ’89. I started making trips up here because my dad couldn’t make the trips anymore. I helped both my mom and dad here, so they could die at home, from cancer. They didn’t want to go into a nursing home. Then my sister found out that she had breast cancer. She said after things settle down with mom and dad that I needed to go get checked. They found I had breast cancer. Mine was worse than my sisters. She had her treatment and she’s fine. This cancer that I have now, this is my third cancer, and I don’t want it no more. They were all totally different cancers. I told God I didn’t want to die of cancer, but you don’t get your wishes answered all the time. I got my little Maltese Yorke “Anna” in 2006 and she has been my little emotional support dog. They let her fly on the airplanes with me when I go down to the University of Chicago [For cancer treat-ment]. I don’t know how we are doing right now with the chemo, but I just keep trudging along saying ‘This cancer has got to go’ but it’s not listening to me. We’re hanging in there. The sad thing for me is when I see people I know at the cancer center, and then you don’t see them for a while you know they are probably gone. That’s been a little hard. I just keep going. I don’t know what else to do. Your body doesn’t want to just give up and I’ve been a survivor and fighter all my life. I’ve had it pretty good. The hardest thing I think I deal with is the depression. When you’re depressed you start feeling sorry for yourself. One of the hardest battles is to be my own cheerleader. I don’t have a husband or children. My dog keeps me going. She gets me out walking. We know each other. The Alpena Senior Center is grateful to serve seniors like Sharon.
Senior Prominence
This class is an 8-week structured group intervention that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance.
First day of class will be April 2nd from 9 to 11 am. Please call BJ at 356-3585 for additional information or to register for the series.

RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED
It’s that time of year to raise money for the Senior Center’s meal program . We have named this fundraising event in memory of Ken Fader, one of our Meals-on-Wheels drivers, who recently passed away. This fundraiser will be active until April 26th, which is the date for our Luxury Event thanking everyone who helped raise money. Every dollar donated makes a difference and helps put food on the table of a senior in need.
No one should have to worry about how they will afford to feed them-selves or their family. Sadly, many seniors in our community are faced with this concern every day. Hunger does not discriminate. Hunger does not care about gender, age, race or religion. Hunger strikes the most vulnerable members of our communities.
