As I sat on my boat this Memorial Day, having a cigar with a friend of mine who serves in the military, I was thinking about how good we all have it. There are so many people we have to thank for giving us this way of life and keeping it secure. Just think about what some of them have given, so we can enjoy everything we have come to cherish and take for granted. Many of our brothers have given of

themselves, some have given everything. Please remember to thank them for their service and sacrifice. I would like to thank

everyone for the confidence they have put in me as Master for this upcoming year. I look forward to a great year.

Lansing V. TenEyck III passed away in April. Since he decided to drop his membership there will not be a memorium block presented. Linnett Pozefsky had a short hospital stay. Bill Ogren was admitted to St. Peters on May 18th with a respiratory problem. He was evaluated over the weekend. It was determined that he had something just short of being pneumonia. He was moved to the Eddy Heritage House in Troy, May 22nd for physical therapy to help strengthen him to fight the infection. Ken Moore a former secretary and Brother in Florida went into the hospital with a low heart rate.

During the work up it was disclosed that his blood had a high calcium content and an elevated creatinine level. Therefore it was off to the nephrologist to have his kidneys checked out. The kidney guy order a full CT scan, that revealed that there were lumps in his lungs. They had the car all pack to come north for the Summer, when the doctor called and wanted him to have a PET scan done to see if anything was cancerous. Jimmy Fuller has a camp on Lake Ontario. His daughter is living there while she is in college. He spent most of last weekend filling and placing sand bags in a battle with the rising lake level.

Sickness and Distress:

Please communicate sickness and distress and/or glad tidings. Brothers, we will never have knowledge to give support to our Brothers, their Widows or Orphans unless we communicate. Harmony is the support of all institutions, especially this of Our Great Masonic Lodge, Wadsworth #417.

Glad Tidings: Vic Stewart took up residence in the Masonic

Care Community in Utica in late February. His address is Room 337 at Wiley Hall. He has nothing but high praise for the facility and the people. He has already had one meeting with the lodge that meets once a month at the facility.

Jim and Kathy Van de Wal celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in March.

Ken and Joanne White are soon to become a grandparents for the second time.

Katie Scott will marry Kenny Dill on June 29th in Buffalo. Kenny is the son of John’s childhood best friend. Katie received her doctorate in Physical Therapy and she is working with severely disabled children in the Buffalo school system, which is her dream job. Kenny will receive his

doctorate in Pharmacy next weekend and he will start his residency at Sisters Hospital in Buffalo following graduation. They plan to reside in the Buffalo area.

Ken Brown’s daughter Kaitlin will be attending the University of new Hampshire this Fall. Her major will be in Communication Sciences and Disorders. After graduating she plans to work on a Masters degree in Speech Pathology.

She was inspired in this field by watching the success of her cousin, who graduated last year. Also, her Grandmother has live with the family and she watched her slip into dementia and Alzheimer’s. They are hoping to receive some help from Grand lodge and Scottish Rite with scholarship money.

Around the District:

District Web Page is Old 17th.org

DD Visits In Beukendall lodge Ken spoke about giving, as he reflected on the recent Charity Night at Ancient Temple. How that giving reaches beyond the District and how it enriches lives. How a Mason’s giving reaches beyond the grave.

At Mount Zion he reflected on President’s Day and on leadership types. He applied this to the first president, as well as, other masonic presidents.

During his visit to Appolo-King Solomon he reflected on the difficulty of fulfilling his necessary duties and how they conflict with interfacing with the Brothers. But his message was about parenting which he applied to A K-S Lodge since many of the Brothers have been through the line more than once and have the experience to be parents to the new brothers entering the Fraternity. He continued with his intentions to promote the Grand Lodge Membership program.

At Van Rensselaer the message was rebranding the Fraternity making it something young men will want to become a part of.

Honor Flight There was a Leatherstocking Honor Flight May 11th. Brethren and families gathered at 6:00 AM to see the veterans off on their flight. The gathering was followed by breakfast.

District Investiture This year’s investiture service was be held on May 22nd at Evening Star Lodge.

Memorial Day Flags Brethren gathered on May 24th and 25th to place flags at the Masonic Plot in memory Gardens. Ongoing Programs Every Tuesday 9-12 Coffee and Fellowship, Evening Star, 260 Old Loudon Road, Latham

Poet’s Corner:

A Spring Day

Another spring is coming as it has since time began. The days are getting longer for it's part of nature's plan The winter's cold is gone now, no snow piles can be found. They've served a final purpose by watering the ground.

Our world has been renewed as it brightens up our day. Winter snows are now forgotten, and the plows are put away. The springtime is a happy time when life begins anew. Like cleaning up from winter that we must prepare to do. I feel the crispness in the air, walking through the field. As I see the work of nature whose beauty is revealed. The vista that surrounds me is an awesome sight indeed. For that beauty with its grandeur is all I really need.

I gaze upon the meadowland around me on each side. And walk upon the footpath from the road I stood beside. Grass has started growing with restful shades of green. Though every now and then, a yellow dandelion is seen.

Buttercups join crocuses, blooming all around. They fill the field with beauty, splendor from the ground. The field beside me beckons, it is blooming and alive. I gaze upon the leafy stems where lilacs soon will thrive.

The springtime is a special time with colors all aglow. Showing us the beauty that was dormant ‘neath the snow. Enjoy this special season that we've waited for so long. For the birds will soon be chirping, and singing nature's song.

Tales of the Ring

THE TEST Author unknown

Several years ago, the story is told of a Mason who always wore his Masonic ring and lapel pin when in public. On some occasions, he rode the bus from his home to the downtown area. On one such trip and when he sat down, he discovered the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change. As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, "You'd better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it." Then he thought, "Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter; who would worry about this little amount." Anyway, the transit company gets too much fare; they will never miss it. Accept it as a 'gift from God' and keep quiet. When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, and then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, "Here, you gave me too much change." The driver with a smile replied, "I noticed your Masonic ring and lapel pin. I have been thinking lately about asking a Mason how to join. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. You passed the test. Can you tell me how to become a Mason?" When the Mason stepped off the bus, he said a silent prayer, "Oh God, Grand Architect of the Universe, I almost sold you and my beloved Masons out for a mere quarter." Our actions are the only Masonic creed some will ever see. This is a really almost scary example of how people watch us as Masons and may put us to the test even without us realizing it! Always be diligent, whether it is at the theater, restaurant, grocery, service station or just driving in traffic. Remember, whether it is a lapel pin, a ring, or an emblem on the car, you carry the name of our great fraternity on your shoulders whenever you call yourself a Mason. You never can tell who might be watching!

Since we are bringing new Brothers in this Spring, it seems appropriate that we trot out this old chestnut.

Greenhouse Cornerstone

On March 16 the Cornerstone was laid for the Greenhouse (Horticultural Center) at the Masonic Care Community in Masonic tradition. Many of our Brothers were in attendance for the event. Including R∴ W∴ Steve King who received the working tools used for the ceremony from M∴ W∴ William Sardone. The tools will become the property of the Livingston Library to commemorate the event.

“…Victoria Cataldo in our MCC Development Office has been reaching out to various organizations regarding programming for the space. There is interest from Cornell Cooperative Extension as well as various local colleges to get involved on the programming side of the project.” Said M∴ W∴ William Sardone.

While there R∴W∴ Ken White visited with W∴ Vic Stewart and gave him a Ken Pen.

Spring EventsAnnual Ken White Nine Ball Tournament On March 27 th Wadsworth held its annual pool tournament. Unfortunately due to his arduous schedule as DDGM our traditional organizer Ken White was unable to attend the event. Regardless we had a very successful tournament. There was a brother Schenectady

Lodge, Carl Adamec, who joined us along with one of our newest brothers Jim Risley. In addition, we had three prospective candidates. The evening had the usual good natured ribbing, fellowship and intense competition. This year’s winner of the Ebenezer Cup was Paul Baum.

Bowling Night The idea for a Bowling Night started with a promotion from Del Lanes in Delmar. However, we did not stop to think that weekdays the lanes are taken up with leagues. Our group shows up only to find all of lanes occupied and likely to remain so until 10 PM. Andy began working with the manager and eventually a bowling alley was found in East Greenbush that could accommodate us. The caravan took off for east Greenbush and our Bowling Night was saved. Everyone was able to roll two games. Jim Risley had a high score in the 180’s for game one and Steve Conant rolled a high of 195 in game two. Honorable mention was awarded to Jerry McCall

and Jorge Garcia. They all received a Stewart’s Gift card as a prize. It should be noted that the gift cards were originally planned as prizes for a Masonic Trivia contest, that never seemed to develop for one reason or another. We had been trying to figure out where we were going to use them. At last an occasion presented itself. At the Past Masters dinner Geoff Hoderath mention that he knew a place where we could bowl without worrying about leagues interfering. With that in mind we are hopeful that this will become another regular Brother bring a Friend night on our calendar.

Meet the New Brothers

Vladimir Manreka Michael Campbell Jim Risley

Michael T. Campbell, Jr. comes from Syracuse. He was interested in being a Mason as soon as he was old enough, his father was a Mason and he wanted to follow in his footsteps. He initially submitted a petition to Liverpool 501 when he turned 21. However, after weighing the amount of work to become a Mason and going to SUNY-Buffalo, he withdrew his petition. We have been in contact with the secretary in Liverpool and been assured he is free

and clear on their books. After graduating and moving to Albany he sought us out through our website. He still returns to Syracuse every other weekend to help on the family farm. He currently lives in Cohoes. His occupation is a logistics specialist. He has moved to Albany with the intention of entering law school.

Meet the New Brothers Cont’d James A. Risley III is another young man who sought us out through our website. I will let him tell his own story as related to me. I’m interested in brotherhood and character development and I believe that being apart of the free masons would be mutually beneficial. In college, I held the position of president in my fraternity as well as many other leadership positions. To this day, I still reflect on the the older brothers that made me into the man that I am today as well as the younger guys that I mentored as neophytes. Please let me know what I can do to initiate the beginning stages of this process. I grew up in Wynantskill and went to Averill Park High School. For college, I attended SUNY Oswego and I studied abroad in London at Imperial College. After graduating, I spent 3 years teaching English in South Korea. Now I am 32 years old and I work for the office of the state comptroller at 110 state street in Albany. I'm currently not married but I am in a serious relationship of one and a half years with my girlfriend and I could see us becoming engaged in the next year or two if things continue to go the way that they are. I have no kids at the moment but there is also potential for this following marriage.

Vladimir Manreka was born in Tirana, Albania. I will let Ladi tell his own story by way of his introduction to us and his letter of intent, that accompanied his petition. I have been living in Albany since 2002 and currently a member of the Military and a Federal Law enforcement Officer. I found out about your lodge through a co-worker of mine who is a member, but in a different lodge located in Queens, NY. I am married and have two children with my wife Anisa. I have graduated from HVCC, UALBANY and have a Master's Degree from the College of St. Rose. I would like to join the lodge for many different reasons but the most important ones are brotherhood, knowledge, be a part of something bigger and help others. I have been involved in several related groups in the past, such as helping veterans from Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq Wars finding houses and receiving benefits they deserve. I am also a at talking to people, understanding people form different backgrounds, being able to deescalate situations (learned from my law enforcement experience) being a team player (learned during my military training) and above all being a great family man and more.

Summer Picnic We have a new venue this year. The facilities at Bethlehem Park filled up faster than usual and Bruce could not secure our usual pavilion on the river. After much hunting he found a suitable location in John Boyd Thatcher State Park. To get there take either Route 85 or 443 and then right on Route 157. Alternatively take Route 146 to Altamont then Route 156 up the hill and then left on Route 157.

The picnic is for Brothers from Wadsworth Lodge and the Old17th District, their families and friends. This is a great time to get together and catch up, especially if you have not gone to any of the other events this Summer. It is also a great “Brother Bring a Friend” event. The location that Bruce secured for our picnic is call Horseshoe #2. It is one of two picnic pavilions located on the promontory that projects out into the valley between Indian Ladder and Hailes Cave. If you have never visited Thatcher Park, or have not been recently, then this is a great opportunity. A fantastic Visitor Center was recently completed, which is a few hundred feet and a short climb from our location, or as a stop on the way in or the way out. It has a history of the park, physical and geological. It has great pictures, graphics and fossils to look at. But back to our picnic area. There are great views from the pavilion, paved access to the pavilion from the parking area, paved walkway from the pavilion to the bathrooms (about 100ft), There is also, a horseshoe pit, kids play/climbing area, Frisbee golf course in the field nearby and access to the hiking trails. There is someplace to plug in electrical devices. For cooking there is a standing charcoal pit and fire pit. Speaking of cooking the Lodge will provide burgers, hot dogs and the fixins’. As in the past everyone is encouraged to bring some kind of dish, salad, snack, dessert etc. Please let Bruce Susser know if you will be attending and how many people you will be bringing. His phone number (518) 439-9405 and his Email is [email protected]
