Dearly beloved in Christ
But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold."(Mark 4:20)
Dearly beloved, we are privileged to hear Gods word freely. This great privilege is also a great responsibility. If we respond to the word of God positively and obediently our lives will be illuminated by the true Light. Let us bring the light of Jesus into the lives of people around us.
The parable of the sower is also called the parable of the soils. We can see this parable in the three synoptic gospels. It tells the story of a sower who scattered seeds on four different types of soils. The way side, the rocky ground, among the thorns and the good soil. Jesus himself explained the parable to his disciples .The seed is God’s word. The various soils represent different kinds of hearts. The varied results show the different responses to the word of God. Like the seed, the word of God is living, active and able to produce spiritual fruit. ‘The way side’ shows hard hearted people who resist the word of God. Careless hearing of the word of God will not give good result. “Keep your heart with all vigilance, from it flow the springs of Life”(proverbs 4:23).
Hard hearts need to be ploughed up to receive the word. ‘The rocky ground’ represents the shallow hearts having no depth to the word of God. This represents the emotional hearers. They accept the word of God joyfully and enthusiastically but when difficulties come, their Joy and enthusiasm disappears. The soil among the thorns is the crowded heart that pictures the person who receives the word of God and does not truly repent and remove the ‘weeds’. The worldly pleasures and desires for riches choke the word. And finally, good soil pictures the heart of a true believer who hears the word of God and follow them. Jesus said, “Everyone who hears the word of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn't do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand." (Matt. 7: 24-26) Both men built
FROM THE VICAR’S DESK
houses that looked good and sturdy. When storm came one of the houses collapsed. He belonged to one of the first three categories of hearers.
Once again we are closer to the season of great lent. This is a time set apart for prayer, fasting and meditations. We remember the passion and the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, to deliver the whole humanity from sin and death.
May the observance of the lent help us to grow in the word of God and bear fruit.
With love and prayers, Rev. Sajit Thomas John Vicar

Dearly Beloved,
This year March 3rd marks the beginning of the Great Lent for the Mar Thoma Church. This special time of the year, we try to examine ourselves and see what we can change so that we can be more like Our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Often we focus on what we need to change in ourselves, but we also need to see what as a family, a church, and a community we need to change. In some homes it might be to start family prayer again. In other homes it might be trying to have a meals as a family, so that a stronger fellowship can be created. Also as a church and a community there are changes that need to be made.
It is because the Lord loves us that he wants us to lead a truly ful-filling life. A loving, caring, sharing life. A life where we build the relationships that brings us and others closer to God. Jesus the Christ preached, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven has come near. (Matthew 4:17).” Repent means so much more than to feel sorry. One of the Jewish words for sin is cheat which means “to go astray.” So the word that we translate repent really means “return.” Change your life and return to God. Stop doing what you want and do what God wants and do it now for the kingdom of God is near.
May the Lord enable all of us to properly use this Lent season to return to God and live the life God wants us to. Yours in Christ’s Service,
Rev. Shibi Abraham Youth Chaplain

SECRETARY’S CORNER Knowing my Father
What comes into our minds when we thank about God is the most important thing about us. For some, such a claim to be the kind of thing a preacher is expected to say on Sunday morning. God-talk may have its place, but in the real world other things seem far more relevant. The agenda of modern secular man has little place for God. The evidence that we know God is not so much our ability to define the divine attributes, as it is our response to people.
Right knowledge of God is present when we imitate our Father’s response. We know it as the parable of the prodigal son, but that convenient name indicates that we have perhaps not listened to it carefully enough. For the story tells not of one son but of two, and the Lord’s purpose is not so much to describe a prodigal son as His Father’s love. It is, in fact, the parable of the Father’s heart, recorded in Luke Chapter 15.
What we know of God is seen in how we view ourselves as lost and how we deal with others as lost. God’s heart aches over those who are lost; God’s heart rejoices over those who are found. How well we know Him is revealed by whether or not we ache and rejoice as He does.
May the Lent season help us to grow and continue to be a blessing for the Parish and the Community.
Kurien Thomas (Mony) 2019 Secretary
