God who is with us, the year ahead holds many unknown opportunities. Bring life and growth to all that awaits us. Open us to the new

and unfamiliar, the challenges and the surprises as we walk together in our

WALK OF FAME.

We pray this the through Christ our Lord.

Amen

Here is an excerpt from our Staff Liturgy last Tuesday. It is a personal, reflective piece from Mrs Aventi. It sums it all

up so well...

We all are walking…walking the journey of life….at times we trudge, at times we run, some of us pace it all out, some of us just go with the flow. But how is this a walk of FAME? Working at Marian Catholic College each day we take a WALK of FAME and our walk includes parents, students and staff. Parents entrust us to walk with their children, guiding and instructing them to achieve FAME in their various curricula goals, students willingly (usually!) allow us to walk them to FAME through the educational and emotional journeys of their lives and as staff we walk together supporting and encouraging one another to reach for FAME for our community. Hence, our legacy is not our wealth, knowledge or what we have, our legacy is how we nurture these relationships within this community …how we take our WALK OF FAME.

We come together now to ask for God’s assistance this year, to help us all to support one another and our Marian Community

whilst we continue our journey together - our WALK of FAME.

Dear Parents, Students and Friends

Welcome to the 2015 school year. I trust that the break has rejuvenated and energised you, hopeful for a successful new year. The staff have putting a great deal of time and effort into ensuring that the first few days of 2015 go smoothly for students, and I thank those involved for spending much time getting the school “ship shape”. Our new Year 7 students are looking ready and eager to begin their journey through high school and I wish them every success at Marian.

The 2014 HSC results were outstanding and for the second year in a row, the best ever for Marian. The breadth of the

improvement was stunning. In general terms:

Students performed above state average in 22 out of 24 of subjects.

85% of students’ subject results were between a Band 4 and Band 6.

50%of students achieved between a Band 4 and Band 6 in all of their subjects.

47% of students’ subject results were a Band 5 or Band 6

10% of students achieved a Band 5 or Band 6 in all of their subjects.

8 students scored above 90 in their ATAR (University Ranking Score).

Our results have been steadily improving over the years, with our aim to lift as many students as possible into the higher HSC Bands (4-6) and the strategies are working. Our students are amongst the best in the state in large numbers!

These results demonstrate that our College provides an excellent education for our students and provides an open door for students to pursue their desired post school pathway, whether that be further study or the workplace.

To celebrate the achievements of our highest ranking students, the College will be holding the HSC High Achiever’s

and Dux Ceremony at 1pm next Wednesday in the Marcellin Hall.

Peace and Best wishes

Learning and Teaching News

A warm welcome back to everyone in the Marian Catholic College community. I hope that everyone is

ready for a happy and productive year in 2015. I thought it would be nice to start the year reflecting

on Marian Catholic College’s success in 2014.

Outstanding HSC results in 2014

All the staff at Marian Catholic College are delighted with the outstanding HSC results achieved by our

2014 Year 12 students. We are very proud of the students for their dedication to their studies and

their hard work, which has earned them these excellent results.

The Marian Catholic College results are outstanding for a great number of students, with more

students with a Band 5 or Band 6 than previously achieved, and considerably less students in the

lower bands. Overall, from seventy HSC students, there are 28 Band 6s shared across 16 students.

Our school also received 129 Band 5s, which is an increase from the previous years. This was across

the range of subjects and a range of students.

Students who achieved a Band 6 in one or more of their subjects or an ATAR of 90 or over will be

acknowledged at our High Achievers Assembly next Wednesday 4 February at 1pm. Our College Dux

for 2014 will also be presented on this day.

Decourcy results show that teachers make a difference at Marian Catholic College

The HSC results of all the students in Catholic Schools in NSW are pooled together each year for HSC

Analysis. Results are analysed on an individual student/subject level, as well as at a whole school

level.

HSC results are analysed in terms of two main factors:-

Competitiveness – This is a measurement of performance against State average.

Learning Gain – This is measurement of whether students have performed better than expected.

This is calculated based on student performance in Year 9 NAPLAN exams.

Our results this year showed that our 2014 Year 12 cohort was highly competitive, performing well

above state average. Our students also achieved high learning gains, showing that they achieved

higher results than expected based on Year 9 results. Our results were the best of all the Catholic

Secondary High Schools in the Wagga Wagga Diocese.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Marian Catholic College. Our fantastic results

are a testament to the dedication of our staff. Our teachers clearly provide a competitive education

that nurtures the learning needs of each individual so that they can achieve to the best of their ability.

Mobile Phone Use at Marian Catholic College

In 2015, we have made slight changes to our policy in relation to mobile phone use

We are aware that mobile phones have become a normal part of contemporary society.

The use of mobile phones can enhance learning opportunities in the classroom.

We believe that responsible use of mobile phones is an important skill for digital citizenship.

Use of mobile phones in the classroom Rights

Students have the right:

To use their mobile phone for educational purposes when directed to do so by their classroom

teacher

Responsibility

Students have the responsibility to:

Follow their teacher’s instructions

Only use their mobile when and as directed to do so by their classroom teacher

Keep their mobile phone on silent at all times

Consequences of inappropriate use of mobile phones in the classroom

If students use their mobile phone inappropriately in the classroom, teachers will request students

to put their mobile phone away. In the case of refusal to follow instructions, the phone may be

confiscated for collection at the office at the end of the day.

Use of mobile phones out of the classroom

(before school, recess, lunch and after school)

Rights

Students have the right:

To have a mobile phone if it is kept on silent

Responsibilities

Students have the responsibility:

to keep their phone on silent at all times

to respect the privacy of others. Students must not take photos or videos of staff or other

students

Students must not use their mobile phone in toilets - (serious legal implications)

to respect the safety (wellbeing) of other students. It is a criminal offence to harass or bully

another student via a mobile phone or any other electronic device

Serious breaches of inappropriate mobile phone use will be reported and dealt with

accordingly.

PLEASE NOTE

The College has a duty of care for each student and therefore:-

Parents should generally contact the office in cases of emergency

Students must ALWAYS report to the office when sick for parents to be contacted. Students

should NOT arrange for their parents to collect them via text message.

Sports Uniform 2015

Marian Catholic College has made a slight change to the Sports Uniform during the summer months

in terms 1 and 4.

During Terms 1 and 4, all students in years 7 and 8 are to wear shorts for the boys and skorts

or shorts for the girls.

Track suit pants are NOT part of the uniform in terms 1 and 4 and cannot be worn during these two

terms.

The college also encourages all boys in all year groups to wear shorts as part of their sport and

school uniforms during the hotter months.

100 Free - first placing only

Transition to High school a New Beginning While there is a natural tendency to focus on your child's reading, writing and number skills, a fundamental aspect of school success is your child's physical, mental and social development.

Children going from Year 6 to Year 7 can often be apprehensive about going to high school and what things they'll face. Parents need to be reassured that high school is a very safe and supportive environment.

Organisation is absolutely critical. You're coming in to a totally different kind of learning environment. Big changes for them include lots of different classes, different subjects, different peers and different teachers. Encourage your child to talk to their Year Advisor or Home Room teacher if feeling overwhelmed. Help them in the first few weeks to be organised. In primary school everything is done for them and centralised. For the first few weeks help them pack their bags and get organised. Set up homework routines and be engaged in the outcomes of their day. Listen carefully and acknowledge that their feelings are real and reassure that as the term goes on things will be easier. Soon enough you child will become independent and take responsibility on their own. There are some great resources on the Youth Beyond Blue and Schools A-Z website to help you navigate through the beginning of your adolescent’s journey and transition to Secondary School. www.youthbeyondblue.com, http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/home

Remember it is often harder for the parent than it is for the child.
