Megan has had a long & successful public speaking career at Marian Catholic College. This talent saw her rise to the national finals of the Rostrum Voice of Youth public speaking competition last year, and previously has won the Lions Youth Leadership quest.

The Lions Youth of the Year is a competition for students aged between 15 and 19. This is a prestigious event for young people, which boasts many high profile Australians amongst the ranks of former entrants such as: Kevin Rudd, Peter Beattie and ABC’s Sabra Lane. The program is in its 50

th year and provides an

unequalled opportunity to experience an interview situation – in a friendly atmosphere – and a chance to practice your public speaking skills.

Megan was required to submit an extensive contestant form which detailed her past accomplishments and community involvements. She was then interviewed for over 15 mins and asked to discuss topics such as ‘the European refugee crisis’ and ‘the Australia’s government approach to climate change.’

Megan was also required to speak on two impromptu topics for two minutes each. They were: ‘Australia gives a lot of foreign aid, does it give enough to its own people?’ and ‘if you could go anywhere in the world where would it be and why?’ Two very challenging topics which Megan managed t address very well.

After all this, Megan was also required to deliver a five minute speech for which she chose the topic of mental health. Her speech was both emotive and thought provoking and was well received by a captivated audience.

Seven exceptional students from Griffith schools competed on the day – all of whom performed brilliantly, however Megan was overall winner and it was well deserved. Her hard work and dedication to the skill of public speaking is continuing to be rewarded with outstanding success in this field and is a credit to herself, and the College is without doubt extremely proud.

Megan will now compete in the zone finals which fortunately, this year, will be held in Griffith on the 12th

of this month. Time and place has yet to be confirmed but details will be announced soon so that the College can get behind her and hopefully see this star continue to rise!

It was a delight to be part of the Year 12 Retreat at Warrambui and to see our Year 12 students immerse themselves joyfully and reverently in the Eucharistic sacrifice of the Mass presenting their dreams and future prospects to Jesus in that Mass. I wish all our Year 12 students all the best in their final year at Marian College and pray that the Good Lord help them realize their dreams in life.

God Bless you all

This week we were joined by Renee Cooper, School Coordinator for St Vincent De Paul Youth Conference from Wagga Wagga who is responsible for promoting and coordinating the conference in the local diocese. Renee will be part of future activities and hopefully become a familiar face at MCC. We were also joined by Monica Dickie, Griffith City Library who brought along Ada Snaidero and Jan Kurtzman who are members of the knitting club. The ladies will be assisting and guiding us as we commence our knitting for charity activity. The CAT members will work together to create blankets to be distributed for those in need as part of “Wrap With Love” campaign and for those in the group who are more advanced knitters they will be creating comfort teddy bear for those experiencing crisis or trauma.

Student Laptops Dear Parents,

When students were issued with their laptops, it was part of the agreement that students would carry them to and from their classes and the College in their Laptop Bags. A number of students are not using their bags and we are doing our best during school hours to remind the students around this part if their agreement. Laptops may be confiscated from the students until the protective case is brought in. This may hinder the learning of the student.

If they are dropped and broken, or end up with cracked screens, parents and/or students are liable to pay for the damage to have it repaired or replaced.

We are asking if parents could help remind your child about the importance of carrying the laptop in the correct protective bag to and from their classes and the College. The last thing we want is for families having to pay for repairs or replacements due to students not doing the right thing to begin with.

Lockers are available for hire from the office where students can safely store them during lunch and recess so they don’t have to worry about carrying them around. Your help in reminding students about this part of the agreement would be greatly appreciated.
