Subject: Maribyrnong Domestic Animal Management Plan 2013-17

Dear Councillor,I am writing to you as a concerned member of the public who cares about our communitys pets.I have reviewed with disappointment the euthanasia figures quoted in the draft Maribyrnong Domestic

Animal Management Plan 2013-2017 and I have grave concerns in particular about the outcomes foryour unclaimed pets 68% of your unclaimed dogs and 98% of cats were euthanised at the LostDogs Home in 2008/12. Not only do you not acknowledge that these figures are unacceptably high, but also fail to include any plans in the DAMP that will substantially reduce this rate over the next fouryears.

Why does Boroondara only euthanase 4% of unclaimed dogs and 4% of unclaimed cats, andStonnington only 5% of unclaimed dogs and 7% of unclaimed cats? I would like to know whyMaribyrnongs service provider the Lost Dogs Home- has been allowed to get away with what Iregard as poor performance? Why has Maribyrnong not acted to protect your communitys pets in thesame way that Stonnington and Boroondara have? Increasingly the Lost Dogs Home is being

viewed by the community as a facility that simply euthanases animals for convenience and profitinstead of rehoming them.As a concerned member of the community, I am alarmed that Council places such little value on thelives of homeless pets. I believe you should be looking to use a service provider who implements bestpractice and progressive animal management strategies rather than the cheapest or most convenientoption. I want to see greater transparency and accountability for the fate of those pets.I urgeyou not to waste this opportunity with the new DAMP to improve the outcomes forMaribyrnongs homeless pets, ensuring both the Council and your animal management serviceprovider significantly raise their standards as demanded by our community.

    Yours sincerely
