MARK TAN ARTIST STATEMENT
When I see art, I view it as an extension of the artist themselves and how it’s perceived. With the artists state in mind, I look at furniture making as an extension of myself. There are no rules. Nobody said you had to do it a certain way, it was just a sug-gestion.
I design and make work in our society that is overcrowded with mass produced objects, I see it as a renegade to hard craftsmanship. The difference is that there is a result of natural beauty and dedication of a man made object.
I create objects that act as a response to modern day industrial processes and how a one-man army can take over. Working with primarily domestic woods, I produce furniture that in-cludes unusual shapes that feed unusual thoughts.
