Dear Parents/Guardians, We have reached the end of another school year. It is amazing how quickly ten months go by and it has been an amazing and eventful year filled with so many great accomplishments by our students and staff. Our athletics program brought home several banners, our Skills team came away with some significant accolades and our Fine Arts department won many choral, music and drama awards and had an excellent display at the Art Gallery in Edmonton. Add in all the fantastic accomplishments in the area of academics and we have had a successful year. A number of thanks goes out at this time of year. First, I’d like to thank all of our students. Year after year, I continue to be proud to be a principal of a school where our students are often identified as being outstanding individuals who are considered to be good kids. Although high school students sometimes get a bad rap for being teenagers, I get told often that we have some of the most polite, welcoming and helpful students that visitors encounter. Second, a huge thank you and best wishes go out to our graduating class of 2018. We have seen many of you grow from Grade 10 to Grade 12 and in the three years, saw you mature into fine young individuals. Whatever path you choose, do so with passion and know that as a staff, we are proud of you. Last, we’d like to thank you; our parents. We know raising teenagers is not an easy task and that you entrust us to do our best throughout the year to give them a quality education that will help them once they graduate. We know that at times, this can be a challenge to get students to do their work, study for exams or at times, even wake up to come to school. Thank you for taking our calls and being patient with us throughout times of craziness. We appreciate all the support you have provided us and for those of you returning, welcome you back in August to continue the journey. Every year I’ve been in education, we always have some goodbyes to give and some welcomes to announce. As mentioned earlier, our grade 12 graduating students are moving on to their post high school endeavors and we wish them the best in all they do. We would also like to say goodbye at this time to some of our staff who are also moving on. Mr. Mick Sahib, Ms. Nicole McRae, Ms. Stacie Becker, Ms. Savannah Essington and Ms. Robyn Nichol will sadly not be returning to Sturgeon Composite High School. We would like to wish them the best of luck in their professional journey. We also have to say good bye to Mr. Mike Snow, Ms. JoAnne Welwood and Ms. Cherie McKeever who are all retiring this year. Although we will miss them, I am sure that they will have many different plans which they will thoroughly enjoy. We welcome back to the school Ms. Carmen Baxandall and Ms. Rae Ann McKinnon and new to the school next year is Mr. Chad Hill and Jackson Percy. As we end the school year, we’d like to remind our parents about our summer communication. In August, you will receive an email which will provide you important dates and information that I will also give you a brief summary of below. Our school office opens officially August 27 th. In our summer communication, you will receive information regarding your child’s schedule and how to request a timetable change if you require one. The schedules should be available via PowerSchool sometime in August. Our first day of school for Grade 10 students will be September 4 th. This is for Grade 10 students only. All other students will begin on September 5th. The last item is a celebratory one. This summer will mark the completion of the Sturgeon Composite Modernization. There is a little bit of work to be done inside and some landscaping and east side parking lot issues to address but once those are done, the work will be complete. It has been a long process and one in which there have been numerous challenges and some very difficult moments for students, staff and parents. Thank you for your patience but it is coming to an end very soon. I would like to extend my warmest thanks to all of you and to wish you all a peaceful and relaxing summer. I look forward to August and the start of the new school year.

Sturgeon Composite High School Art 30 students Grad show at the Alberta Gallery of Art!
SCHS teacher Cheryl Tanouye was presented the Art Educator Award from the Canadian Society for Education through Art (CSEA)
Welding
Logan Dunkin placed 4th at regionals for welding. Logan qualified for provincials and will be representing our school with pride.
Drama Drama 20/30s took two of their plays, Us and Them and Sure Thing, to the Zone 3 One Act Play Festival, in
Ardrossan. There, they competed against a variety of schools from Ardrossan, Sherwood Park, Lmont, Lloydminster, and Tofield. Both plays were well received and adjudicated by Doug Mertz, who holds a BFA in Acting and an MFA in Performance Pedagogy, and currently serves as Director of Education and Out-reach at the Citadel Theatre.
Kudos to all the Drama 20/30 students who performed at the festival, and congratulations to Rebecca Vrdolak, who won best director for Sure Thing, and to the cast (Rebecca Vrdolak, Tyler Sheskey) and crew (Cheyenne Hatter, Miguel Wilson) of Sure Thing, which won best play, for Zone 3, 2018.
Music
Vocal Jazz Ensemble received an 'Honours with distinction' rating, and were invited to compete at the Choral Provincials Festival on May 27th.
SCHS concert choir received a Gold rating at Choralfest in Edmonton.
AIBF (Alberta International Band Festival)- Edmonton Jazz Band received two 'Superior ratings' (the highest at this festival) resulting in an AIBF GOLD award. Concert Band received two 'Excellent ratings'
St. Albert Rotary Music Festival Choir and Vocal Jazz Ensemble received gold ratings Concert Band received a mark of 91% (Honours) and earned the Concert Band Award from SARMF. Jazz Band received a mark of 95% (Honours with Distinction), won the jazz band award, and was invited to play at the "ENCORE awards night" to close this year’s St. Albert Rotary Music Festival at the Arden Theater.
Darwin Krips our Vice Principal and Choral Music Teacher was awarded the 2017 Arts and Culture Citation Award (In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments. Your continued dedication and commitment to ex-cellence has brought honour to the City of Edmonton.

Green Team – Donated 160 Thanksgiving meals to people in need at Hope Mission Leadership – Under the direction of Carrla Cowley have been collecting and raising donations for the Mustard
Seed and spent time serving supper for those in need. Euclid - International mathematics competition out of Waterloo, Ont. This was the 6th year SCHS competed. This
year we had the highest team score yet. Which declared us zone champions for the 6th time. Bill Crittenden our Table Top Club and Math teacher represented Alberta at a world Table Top championships in
Seattle Washington.

Building Community Growing Hope Supporting Change
On Monday, April 23rd, nine members of the leadership team were able to
accompany Ms. Cowley to the Mustard Seed, which Leadership had been raising
donations for. They spent there time preparing and serving supper for those in
need. This event was a great eye opener to see so many individuals who either lived
on the streets or couldn't afford any food to come together and enjoy a meal,
desert, and a great hockey game! Thank you to everyone who donated or helped at
the Mustard Seed it was much appreciated and we encourage you to volunteer or
donate supplies for the Mustard Seed!
