Welcome to my workshop
About me….
Taught for the Waterloo County Board of Education in Kitchener, Ontario for 3 decades (yeah… I am OLD)
Business Teacher: Marketing, Business Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Business English, Intro to Business, Shorthand and also ….
Co-op, Careers and a taste of Foods
Purpose of this workshop…
To Show You How To Be
CreativeHands-onStimulatingSatisfied
In teaching marketing that is….
An interesting story…
Teacher’s college
Follow your passion – I did
You have to set the example for your kids
In order for you to set the example,
You have to understand what you are working with.
There are no two identical marketing classes.
Think about your marketing class.
Think about the personalities that you have.
Are they exactly the same as a previous class?
The Four Basic Personality TypesThe glass is half full
The glass is half empty
Half full…No! Wait!
Half empty!...No, half…
Half empty!...No, half…
What was the question?
Hey! I ordered a
cheeseburger!
Where do your students fall?
I think we have a lot of our students in our marketing class in category three and four!!!
Classroom Management
This is key before you actually start the content of your course
Establish this early in the course
MY two rules Respect No whining
Oh yeah… and one last one…
If any day I look like I do not want to be there, they can leave.
**That intrigues them every time.
Survival in the Marketing Classroom
Let’s brainstorm…
What do you think makes for a successful class where kids are engaged, motivated?
What is working for you?
Our kids have changed…
Face book Twitter Cell phones Computers
INSTANT FEEDBACK and CONSTANT STIMULATION
I grew up with…
PONG Electronic Game
I was almost over stimulated…
We wonder why we have a hard time capturing their interest!!!
Some days it doesn’t go as planned….
Don’t ever lose your sense of humour.
Some days our expectations do not match the output of our students.
This may be true of our spouses or significant others AS WELL….
How do you put this “fresh” philosophy into place? Teach the content
BUT
Make your assignments, hands-on, creative and realistic.
Exercise 1: Welcome to Marketing
What is their full name? If they had a choice, what name would they have
selected for themselves and why? What do they see themselves doing after high
school? (Must be legal) If they had to describe themselves as a fruit,
what would they be and why?
Exercise 1 continued….
Best Quality – something they are proud of….
Worst Quality – something they would like to change about themselves….
Why did they take this course?
The purpose….
Allows students the opportunity to learn something about each other.
Shows you who finds it easy to speak in front of the class.
Evaluation…
Just observe
You do not need to add extra stress to those students in your class who are already terrified.
Exercise 2: Say It Like It Is
The purpose is to get your students up in front of the room.
Any volunteers?
It only takes a MINUTE!
In advance of this exercise….
Visit your local dollar store…
Spend the best $30 bucks you have ever spent!
ENJOY!
Exercise 4: “Marketing Me”
Creating a 3-D dimensional object that represents YOU.
Present your ideas to the class.
Ideas from my students….
3D representation of an office – desk, laptop, carpeting, right down to a garbage can – successful businessman
5 ft. bridge out of popsicle sticks – Civil Engineer 3 ft. paper mache eyeball – teacher’s desk,
steno pad, pen, paintings, blackboard – Teacher Large scissors with pictures - Hairstylist
Exercise 12: Market Research Survey After you have taught them the theory,
have them use it.
Have your students choose one of the following three scenarios.
Three scenarios
Scenario ONE
You are a candy manufacturer and find that although sales in the overall market are improving, your company’s candy sales are decreasing. Create a survey that will provide your company with information that might help them improve this situation.
Scenario Two
You are working with an organization that is in charge of the opening of a brand new sports facility. Create a survey that will help your company understand the needs and wants of potential individuals who would use that facility.
Scenario Three
You work in the market research department for a company who is opening up a new movie theatre. Create a survey that will identify the wants and needs of your new theatre’s clientele.
The task
Create an introduction which contains the required five points discussed in class.
Include two or three demographic questions after the introduction.
Body should contain at least eight questions. Be sure to include a thank you at the conclusion
of survey.
This market research exercise allows: For choice on the part of your students. Ability to work individually or in pairs. Allows them to practice all the necessary
components of the theory you have taught them.
Gives them opportunity to be creative.
Another suggestion: Adding a Fundraising Component Selling of Yearbook Ads Raising Money for a Cause – Outreach Raising Money for Building Expenses
OR my personal favourite….
Who benefits???
The family. Your students and their families. Your community. Every student in your school.
EVERY ONE.
What goes around, comes around!
The following year, Brandon was in my Marketing Class and participated in a fundraiser for another person in need.
This is how you engage your students
And allow them to experience the PASSION that marketing offers.
Steps involved in this project:
Create a company Explanation of Product/Service Target Market Market Research Price Promotion Oral Presentation
Interesting Ideas over the years….
A special Gel that is used in ultrasounds that allows you to see your child at different ages of their lives.
Invizo Pro – A phone case that makes your phone invisible. Only way to see it is to put on your special contact lenses that come with your phone.
More ideas…
Shrinkview – A portable TV that shrinks and expands with the click of a button.
Fisherman Shoes – You can park your boat and “walk on water” to catch those fish.
Doctor Fix-it – Medical soda that repairs all injuries.
Still more ideas….
FastForm 360 – A niche market watch that can instantly transport you anywhere with a press of a button.
The Hover-Up – An alarm clock that flies around the room so you have to get out of bed to turn if off.
Liquid Gold – A water bottle that expands as it fills. Turns air into water.
The end result
The final presentation.
Let’s take a look
