Club member Liz Campbell says “If you want to know some of the plants that grow well in the Northern Neck, visit Denise Green at Sassafras Farm in Hayes. You will dis-cover a number of native plants that she has grown for sale.”

Green recently shared knowledge of her favorite natives with the Chesapeake Bay Garden Club in a lec-ture titled “Landscaping with Natives.”

Her slides demonstrated that a beautiful garden can be cre-ated by using these plants, said Campbell. A handout for mem-bers listed plants that do well in different areas of the garden, such as dry or wet shade, dry or wet sunny areas.

“We try to controI nature rather than work with it. If a [native] plant is placed where it likes to grow, no special care is needed. After all, it has already adapted [to that area],” she said.

The design for the month, a creative line design, was titled Nature’s Contrast. Seven designs were evaluated by guest judge Jane Denton of the Kilmarnock Garden Club.

Winners were Lorraine Van Wickler, blue and Best in Show; Sharon Lemke, blue; Dody Douglas, red; Rebecca

Marilyn “Micki” Pugh of Wicomico Church won a blue ribbon for “Best

Use of Color in the Wall Category” for her quilt, “The Ancients,” at the spring 2012 Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival.

Based on a 1987 painting, “Of An Ancient Civilization” by artist friend Richard Stodart of Burgess, Pugh worked on her quilt for nearly a year, she said.

“I wondered if I could interpret the mythic painting artistically as a quilt. With Richard’s agreement, I did a tracing of the entwined archetypes and had The Highlander Studios enlarge the tracing to the size I wanted,” explained Pugh.

“Since the figures are curvilinear, I chose quilting techniques developed by Ruth McDowell and Caryl Bryer Fallert to piece the curves,” she said. “Free-motion quilting stitches from Leah Day’s site and elsewhere add textural dimension. Hand-dyed fabrics for the faces provide a painterly effect, which variegated threads carry to the rest of the quilt.”

Friends and fellow members of the Five Rivers Fiber Guild, Cutting Edge Quilt Guild, and RFM Needlers, are especially proud of Micki for winning such a big award at this highly competitive quilt show that accepts hundreds of entries, said Sandy Henbest.

On the road againThe Kiwanis Club recently held its semi-annual roadside cleanup along Christ Church Road in Weems. Crew leader Carroll Chewning reported this was one of the largest collections of debris in quite some time. The cleanup is part of the Virginia Adopt-A-Highway program. Kiwanis members from left are Tom Coye, Charlie Wiggs, Jim Deaver, Chewning, Clay Macaulay, Larry Kight and standing in the truck is Curt Dozier. Also assisting was Camille Bennett.

The Bluff Point Community League recently received a grant from the Northern Neck Branch of Preservation Virginia to assist with the purchase of archival materials to preserve documents relating to the 100-year-old history of Bluff Point Graded School located in Kilmarnock. Armed with gloves, rakes and pruners, they recently attacked the garden, reported

spokesperson Margie Redlin. Bags of mulch donated by the Earth Store complimented the garden.

“RGC members partici-pate throughout the year with seasonal tasks such as this to keep the landscape looking its best,”said Redlin.

The clinic garden is one of the RGC community projects, she said.
