FISH BITES The Marlins finish out their season-opening homestand with the rubber-match of this three-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays starting today at 1:10 p.m. Henderson Alvarez is making his second start of the season, and he will go up against the Rays’ Nathan Karns, who is also making his second start of the season. Today’s ceremonial first pitch is being thrown out by former Miami Hurricane running-back Duke Johnson, and the National Anthem will be performed by Atlantic Montessori Charter School. Today is Boys & Girls Clubs Day at Marlins Park. The Marlins will celebrate the partnership between Major League Baseball and Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Local South Florida Boys & Girls Clubs will be recognized pregame and throughout the game at Marlins Park. The first 10,000 fans through the gates today will receive a Miami Marlins 2015 Calendar presented by Pepsi. Following this afternoon’s contest, Miami will embark on its first road trip of the season, an 11-day, 10-game trek to Atlanta (April 13-15), the Mets (April 16-19) and Philadelphia (April 21-23). YESTERDAY The Fish dropped game two of the 2015 Citrus Series by the score of 2-0. Jarred Cosart limited the Rays to one run on three hits and three walks while striking out one over 6.0 innings of work. Christian Yelich continued his hot hitting against American League teams, going 1x3 with a double and a walk. Marcell Ozuna picked up the only other Miami hit with a single in the eighth inning. VS. RAYS The Fish had their five-game win streak over Tampa Bay snapped yesterday. The two teams have traded victories in the first two games of the series after trading sweeps in the previous Citrus Series. Miami leads the series at home with a mark of 28-22, while also leading the all-time overall series, 48-47. Over the entirety of this series, only seven runs separate the two teams: the Fish have tallied 438 total runs, while the Rays have amassed 445. UP NEXT The Marlins travel to Atlanta following today’s game and will square off with the Braves in a three-game series begin- ning tomorrow at 7:10 p.m. Miami dropped its season-opening series to Atlanta and has come away victorious in just four of the last 11 meetings. The Fish are 66-114 all-time in Atlanta, and trail the overall series, 150-211. PLAYING IT CLOSE Of Miami’s five games this season, the pitching staff has limited opponents to two runs three times, but have lost all three. The last team to limit opponents to as many two-or-fewer run games over its first five and lose all three were the 1969 Houston Astros, who did so in their first three games against the San Diego Padres: 2-1, 2-0 and 2-0. That Astros team went on to finish the season with an 81-81 record. - Stats LLC CHRISTIAN CRUSHES THE AL In 28 games against American League foes, Christian Yelich has posted a career mark of .367 (40x109), which is tied with Aaron Miles for the highest all-time average in Interleague Play (min. 100 PA), ahead of Anthony Rendon (.361) and Wally Joyner (.353). Taking out a .158 (3x19) average against the Rays, Yelich is hitting all other AL opponents at a .411 (37x90) clip. INTERLEAGUE NOTES Miami’s 2015 Interleague slate has the Fish matching up against the Rays (also September 29-October 1), Orioles (May 22-24), Blue Jays (June 8-10), Yankees (home-and-home from June 15-18) and Red Sox (July 7-8 and August 11-12). The Fish have gone 163-149/.522 all-time against the American League, owning the best Interleague record among National League teams, in front of the St. Louis (143-132/.520), the Mets (157-145/.520) and Atlanta (155-144; .518). The Marlins’ 163 Interleague wins are the most among National League clubs; the Mets rank second with 157, followed by Washington’s 156. All-time in Interleague Play, Miami leads all National League offenses in runs scored (1,438), hits (2,771), doubles (572) and RBI (1,359). The Marlins’ best single-season mark in Interleague Play came in 1997, when they went 12-3. FREE RANGE Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna and Giancarlo Stanton were the first Marlins outfield trio to make consecutive Opening Day starts since Jeff Conine, Chuck Carr and Gary Sheffield in 1994-95. Last season, the triumvirate combined on a .280 average, 255 runs scored, 87 doubles, 12 triples, 69 home runs and 244 RBI. Miami’s trio was the first outfield with an average age younger than 24 to put up such numbers since the 1987 Texas Rangers, when Ruben Sierra, Oddibe McDowell and Pete Incaviglia averaged 23 years, 171 days and had 71 homers, 241 RBI and 247 runs scored for the season. - Stats, LLC DON OF ALL TRADES Over the course of his seven-plus year career, Don Kelly is the only active player to have appeared at every position in the field, including pitcher. His lone pitching appearance came on June 29, 2011 against the Mets, when he used five pitches to get Scott Hairston to fly out to center field. He has one career appearance as a catcher, 87 at first base, nine at second, 130 at third, five at shortstop, 165 in left field, 55 in center and 112 in right. - Stats LLC RED DAWN BREAKING In two years at the helm of the Marlins, Mike Redmond has amassed a 140-189 record, already the fifth-most games as manager in Marlins history. In 2014, he guided the Club to a historic turnaround from their 100-loss campaign in 2013. Miami won 77 games last season, making Redmond just the seventh manager in MLB history to lose 100 games in his first season and improve by 15-plus wins in his second season (same team only). Additionally, only two other NL teams since 1969 have recovered from a 100-loss season to win 77-plus games the next year: the 1986 Giants (83 wins) and the 2005 Diamondbacks (77). Henderson Alvarez is making his second start of the season tonight, coming off an Opening Day loss to the Atlanta Braves on April 6. In the start, he allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out two over 7.0 innings. Last season, went 12-7 with a 2.65 ERA in 30 starts. His ERA ranked as the sixth-lowest among National League starters, and fifth-lowest in Marlins history. Additionally, his 1.60 ERA at home led the Majors and was the third-lowest in Club history.

Alvarez is making his seventh career start and appearance against Tampa Bay, posting a 1-5 record and 4.78 ERA (37.2 ip/20 er). Took the loss in each of his first five starts against Rays before tossing an eight-hit shutout in last meeting, June 3, 2014 at Marlins Park.

Last season, he shut out Seattle on April 19, the Mets on May 6 and the Rays on June 3. With the Tampa Bay shutout, became the first pitcher in MLB history to toss three consecutive shutouts in Interleague play (first IL shutout was no-hitter vs. Detroit on Sept. 29, 2013).

Over career, has gone 3-3 with three shutouts and a 3.83 ERA (49.1/21) in seven Interleague starts. In last start against an American League opponent, suffered a 6-1 loss to the Angels on August 27, 2014 at Angel Stadium, allowing five runs on eight hits (two home runs) and a walk with three strikeouts over 6.1 innings.

According to Elias, the Marlins set a Club record by winning 10-straight games started by Alvarez from May 16-July 6, 2014, surpassing a stretch of nine straight wins in starts by Chris Hammond from May 19-July 2, 1993.

Last season, became one of six players over the last 20 years with at least five shutouts before their age-25 season. Alvarez, Clayton Kershaw, Derek Holland, Mark Mulder and Javier Vazquez have five each. Dontrelle Willis had eight.

He tied Adam Wainwright and Rick Porcello for the MLB lead with three shut-outs in 2014. He was also tied with four others for seventh in complete games (3), behind Clayton Kershaw (6), Dallas Keuchel and Adam Wainwright (5 each), and Johnny Cueto, Madison Bumgarner and Julio Teheran (4 each).

Ranked second among Major League starters in fewest pitches per inning (14.0), trailing only Clayton Kershaw (13.7). Since 2012, has average just 14.5 pitches per inning, tied with Bronson Arroyo and Bartolo Colon for second behind Hisashi Iwakuma (14.4).
