FUN PALACE, MADRIDproject level 4

The Fun Palace is conceived as amixed-use project, creating an excitingnew public space served by a widevariety of entertainment and leisurefacilities, including retail, restaurants, cafes, museums and a theatre. It islocated in the Madrid old quarter, atManzanares riverside, in theexceptional site of the Segovia Bridge. The scheme comprises a new riverpromenade, linking the riverfront tothe historic city.

The complex stands at the riverside, creating a public pedestrianisedwaterfront, surrounded by differentlow height volumes, with river viewsbetween them. Each building respondsto a different use and the roof levelchanges depending on the spacerequirements of each one. Theextension of the building roofscreates an irregular shelter from thesun at the public space. The shelterstructure consists of a triangulatedlattice of flat stainless steel panels, supported by the different volumes. Alinear green area links the project tothe city, interrupted by slopingaccesses connecting the street levelwith the river level.

The Fun Palace is designed to admirethe riverside. Full-height windowsallow the surrounding landscape toform a backdrop to the leisurespaces, while daylight washes theinteriors. The project will create anew focus within the city and will actas a magnet for leisure and culturalactivities at this spectacular siting.

CHUECA HOUSING, MADRIDproject level 5

The centre of Madrid City ischaracterised by narrow streets, ahigh-occupation density and the closerelationship between the street andthe building. The project is located ina narrow rectangular site, standing atthe corner of a residential street. The scheme aims to introduce amodern residence building in atraditional environment- it is acatalyst for urban regeneration, vitalto the future of the city.

The building itself has nine storeys, with shops occupying the lower leveland apartments located on the upperfloors. The apartments are access viaday-lit stairwells, designed tomaximise the useable area on thefloors. Maisonettes with double-heightliving spaces are located at thecorners where they overlook the city.Smaller single-storey apartmentsstand at the other side of thestairwells.

Chueca Housing has a lightweightstructure supported by stainlesssteel pillars. The glass enclosureallows daylight to wash the interiorspaces and promotes naturalventilation. Full height windows areshaded by delicate filigree screens forprivacy.

VALLDEMOSAAUDITORIUM, MADRIDproject level 6

Public events increasingly demandvenues that can stage a big varietyof uses. Few facilities offer a flexiblespace for conferences, exhibitions, liveperformances or concerts. Anauditorium venue In a Mediterraneanvillage like Valldemosa, helps tostrengthen its reputation as a culturedestination. The enclosure stands at aspectacular natural landscape. Asloping street runs along the northfaçade of the building, providingdifferent level access to the project.

Responding to the climate, a generouscanopy extends from the sloping road. The top of the canopy consists of aroof garden, creating a public area.Sitting spaces run along the edge ofthe roof garden, creating a place toadmire the countryside. Beneath thecanopy, visitors can enter the lobby, which connects with a registrationarea, the auditorium and a caféterrace. The transition from thestreet to the canopy is linked by anoutdoor pedestrian concourse at theeastern façade. Two concrete layers, reinforces by concrete beams betweenthem, conforms the roof structure.

The building creates a sense ofintimacy, emphasising the shadebeneath the canopy, which providesshelter from the sun. The auditoriumlooks out onto the countryside, ensuring that the audience is as closeas possible to the nature. A glassshield wrap around the auditorium. Toheighten the darkness, a curtain canenvelope the auditorium enclosure.Valldemosa Auditorium provides a250-seat hall with surrounding areasopened up to the natural environment.

CENTRE FOR VISUALARTS, SEGOVIAproject level 7

This centre is part of amultifunctional complex, located inSegovia surroundings, between aresidential area and a protectednatural environment. The complexintegrates related activities, includinga hotel, an investigation centre, acongress centre and a centre forvisual arts. The building is conceivedas a cultural and social focus, wherethe study of art is an open, pleasurable experience, one not boundby the traditional enclosure of objectand viewer. As a result, the Centre ofVisual Arts is much more than aconventional gallery, creating adifferent way of exhibition.

The design for the centre drawsinspiration from a worm, creating acontinuity of ribs covered withtextiles, to provide a free-flowingsequence of spaces. Cause to the longspans, the complex structure is atriangulated lattice of flat stainlesssteel panels, supported by stainlesssteel pillars. These ribs are coveredwith an outer and inner layer oftextile, generating between them anair space, designed to produce thegreenhouse effect in a cold winterday. This lightweight enclosure allowscreating a flexible mix spaces for thecentre.

This building is multi-functional,including areas for art workshops andconferences alongside the exhibitionspace. Natural light flows throughtriangular strips on the textile roofto the interior spaces, while aluminiumlouvres, linked to temperaturesensors, provide a flexible system forthe control of natural ventilation. Thissystem is designed to be cool andrefreshing on a hot summer day.Covered and uncovered spaces createa curve route around an outdoorpedestrian concourse. This exteriorspace leads up to the different areasof the centre.

FLEXIBLE OUTDOORFURNITUREone-week project

This project is conceived as a restingspace, providing a shelter from thesun as well as comfortable furniture. The furniture creates different warmsurfaces that can be used for sittingor lying, doing away with excessiveformalities and stiff postures infavour of relaxation.

A concern for the context hasproduced a solution that is sensitiveto the environment, providingmaterials that convey warmth andemphasize the natural character. Thestructure consists of two elements:circular wood supports and a naturalcane work, providing both naturalshading and an attractive visualshield. The cane-net work is designedto create a covering that filters thelight and to conform the furniture, hiding beneath the canopy.

The design flexibility allows creatingdifferent screens for privacy andadapting the extension to therequirements. Using simpleconstruction techniques, the furnitureis designed to create a dialoguebetween the users and the nature.
