April 18, 2015 will be another events that definatly writes european martial arts history for the eight time.

But the Munich Hall of Honours is not the only important event

in Europe. There is a few Hall of Fames

that are worth to look in it. Especially a few

The Swiss Hall of Honours, initiated and run by two Komi-

Masters, Grandmaster and Legends from Europe.

But Master Gregor Huss has decidet to overshadow and challenge all other events in Europe with his INNSBRUCK HALL OF HONOURS 2015, that will take place in another one of the most beautiful places centrally located in Eu-rope, the jewel of Tyrol, INNSBRUCK, Austria.

Gregor Huss:Hi, Cynthia, just so happy I can catch you before you leave for Manila to do your next action movie “Showdown in Manila” to ask you view questions for the article in Martial Science Magzine. You are now for the fourth year in row the star at the Munich Hall of Honours, that some people call the “european oscar for the Martial Arts.” What makes you feel so positve about this event?

Cynthia Rothrock:Munich feels like my second home now. There is so many amazing things about the Mu-nich Hall of Honors. You and your team go above and be-yond the call of duty of making sure everyone has an unforge-ttable time. Starting with the Friday night party where we dress in Bavarian style clothes and eat and drink like the lo-cals. Here we meet old friends from around the world and meet new ones. The next day there are many seminars where the masters join in as well and have a great time. Just a great day of learning, no ego’s here. Then at night the Hall of Ho-nors begin. You have made this the classiest. The food is abso-lutely the best with an incredi-ble show which changes from year to year. This has truly be-come the event one must attend and you will keep coming back. If that isn’t enough the next day is full of laughs, sightsee-ing, craziness, food, traditional drinks and a memory of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Do I sound like I LOVE this event? Absolutely

Gregor Huss:Yes we indeed have a great time before and after the event,

together with many other mar-tial artists and friends and touring the country to do some sightseeing. Two years ago we couldnt make it to Innsbruck to see this beautiful capitol of Tyrol in Austria. Now it seem we will be there more often. The 1st Inns-bruck Hall of Honour is on June 20, 2015 and Austria, here we come. Are you excited about it?

Cynthia Rothrock:Yes very

Gregor Huss:What do you expect from this new project which will have a totally new concept and the pos-sibility to more than double the amount of guests in the first year already?

Cynthia Rothrock:I am looking forward to the first Innsbruck Hall of Honor. I know you are behind it, it will indeed be another world class event with Austrian flavor. Very proud to be at the first one and looking forward to meeting new people and explo-ring a bit of Austria. Can we go to where the Sound of Music was filmed and we can run through the fields singing.

Gregor Huss:Well, I think we can manage to go to the historical scene at the Mirabel Castle in Salzburg which is not too far from Innsbruck. And maybe we can take the first ten readers of martial science magazine participants with us as an reward and make this a unforgettable time for them, if they book Innsbruck Event before April 15th. Yes indeed we want to have another unique flair to this event and therefore we have some great austrian martial artist, Legends and Grandmaster on board like Grandmaster Erhard Kellner from St.Pölten, which you know already for a long time, one of the Karate Legends in Austria. Grandmaster Perry Zmugg from Graz, an extremely well known Kung Fu and Hapkido Expert and from Innsbruck itself Master Ado Dulas, a self defense expert from Tyrol.

You have met them before many times and I am sure you will be happy to have them with us in this event, together with Wing Chun Legend Samuel Kwok and the UK Stars Emma Elmes, Zara Phythian and Silvio Simac.

Cynthia Rothrock:The best of the best.

Gregor Huss:Speaking of the best of the best, besides the Munich Hall of Honours in April and the Inns-bruck Hall of Honours in June, you have been doing and will be doing a few new Action Movies. What are your plans in this field in 2015 and beyond?

Cynthia Rothrock:I will start shooting Showdown in Manilla next week. I am really looking forward to work with Mark Dacascos We have a great cast and it will be very ac-tion packed. I will be working with lot of my friends which always makes it a lot of fun. Films that I hope to shoot this year is The Peculiar Perils of Penelope Peacock, Blood Raid and The Martial Art Kid 2. The first one will be coming soon.

Gregor Huss:

I am sure this sounds fantastic to all your fans all over the world. We all looking forward to see you starring in these films. It seems you are always travelling all over the world, doing the most exiting things like climbing in the Himalya or touring Island or the Dschungels of Southamerica, what are your plans in this field in the near future?

Cynthia Rothrock:In May I will be doing a cha-llenging adventure trip in Ecuador and the Galapogos. Trekking, canyon swinging, kayaking, biking, repelling and whatever crazy stuff I can do.

Gregor Huss:Wow, that sounds very exciting and like a great adventure to me. I think this is one of the reasons besides your film career, why your millions of fans love and admire you over all these years, because you do all these fantastic things and let them be part of it in a humble way and experience these

He was rated competitor of the year in 1994 with the National Coali-tion of Martial Artists. In 1997, he was rated number 2 in overall points in the Pacific Rim Tour Tournament circuit. Also in the same year, he was rated number one in traditional weapons and katas in M.A.R.R.S for his age division and number two in overall points. On November 14th, 1998 he attended the Unified World Martial Arts Federation year end banquet, and walked away with 1st place winnings in each of 4 categories:

Within that same year, Mark also took the Grand Champion in Kata’s at the finals held in Lake Tahoe for the Golden State Karate Assoc. (GSKA) as well as taking first place in the traditional senior weapons and traditio-nal open.

After taking the National title in traditional senior weapons in IMAC, Shuey was also awarded Competitor of the Year by IKSA. In 1999, Mark reached his goal of taking NASKA’S World and National, Masters Tradi-

tional Weapons Title, and IMAC’S National tit-le. For 2000 he defended his World Cham-pion title for NASKA and won top honors in the World for the KRANE Ratings. In 2001 GM Shuey repeated for the third time, de-fending his National and World titles on the NASKA tournament circuit.

In 1998, he was inducted into the Martial Arts Masters, Pioneers, and Legends Hall of Fame as a “Master Instructor”, as well as 1999. In 2001, he was honored by induction to the Action Martial Arts Hall of Fame, International Association of Karate, Kobudo, Puerto Rico Hall of Fame and USMA. Also in 2001, Mark was appointed to the Board on the World Sokeship. In 2003, Mark was inducted into the Black Belt Maga-zine Hall of Fame as “Weapons Instructor of the Year”.

Mark has been promoting tournaments in the martial arts since 1980, and has hosted over 16 tournaments of his own. Because of his love for the Cane, his traditional “de-terrent of choice”, he was one of the foun-ders and now sole owner of “Cane Masters”. This company has introduced the Cane to a greater audience in the martial arts com-munity, as well as senior citizens and the physically challenged. Furthermore, Mark travels throughout the world giving seminars on using the cane for self-defense as well as exercise. At the start of 2000, Shuey formed the Cane Masters International Association for students of the cane and to certify instruc-tors for his system.

Due to articles in the media, like the article by Jennifer Levitz in the Saturday July 12, 2008 edition of The Wall Street Journal entitled “Everybody Is ‘Cane Fu’ Fighting At Senior Centers, So Watch Out (Older People Get Healthful Exercise And Learn to Wield a

Ready Deterrent)”, and interviews on major tv sports and entertainment programs have helped to bring Mark’s system of cane figh-ting to the attention of the world at large, and his “American Cane System” is being tau-ght by over 300 instructors throughout the world.

Incorporating a combination of stretching, balance, isometric, and isotonic routines, Mark’s system has been recognized by physicians, chiropractors, and physical therapists from coast to coast as not only great for general fitness, but also an efficient and effective method for rehabilitation. The focal point of the system is a cane, and, by Mr. Shuey’s own admission, preferably a Cane Masters cane.

“In one of the Agama Sutras, the Buddha’s early sermons, there is a very interesting story:

Once there was a man who had four wives. According to the social system and circumstances of ancient India, it was possible for a man to have several wives. Also, during the Heian period in Japan, about a thousand years ago, it was not unusual for a woman to have several husbands. The Indian had become ill and was about to die. At the end of his life, he felt very lonely and so asked the first wife to accompany him to the other world.

‘My dear wife,’ he said, ‘I loved you day and night, I took care of you throughout my whole life. Now I am about to die, will you please go with me wherever I go after my death?’

He expected her to answer yes. But she answered, ‘My dear husband, I know you always loved me. And you are going to die. Now it is time to separate from you. Goodbye, my dear.’

He called his second wife to his sickbed and begged her to follow him in death. He said, ‘My dear second wife, you know how I loved you. Sometimes I was afraid you might leave me, but I held on to you strongly. My dear, please come with me.’

The second wife expressed herself rather coldly. ‘Dear husband, your first wife refused to accompany you after your death. How can I follow you? You loved me only for your own selfish sake.’

Karma (The Four Wives)

Teachings of the Budha

Page 27: Martial%20 science%208%20april

APRIL/2015 27

Lying in his deathbed, he called his third wife, and asked her to follow him. The third wife replied, with tears in her eyes, ‘My dear, I pity you and I feel sad for myself. Therefore I shall accompany you to the graveyard. This is my last duty to you.’ The third wife thus also refused to follow him to death.

Three wives had refused to follow him after his death. Now he recalled that there was another wife, his fourth wife, for whom he didn’t care very much. He had treated her like a slave and had always showed much displeasure with her. He now thought that if he asked her to follow him to death, she certainly would say no.

But his loneliness and fear were so severe that he made the effort to ask her to accompany him to the other world. The fourth wife gladly accepted her husband’s request.

‘My dear husband,’ she said, ‘I will go with you. Whatever happens, I am determined to be with you forever. I cannot be separated from you.”

This is the story of ‘A Man and His Four Wives.’

Gautama Buddha concluded the story as follows: ‘Every man and woman has four wives or husbands. What do these wives signify?’

THE FIRST WIFE

The first ‘wife’ is our body. We love our body day and night. In the morning, we wash our face, put on clothing and shoes. We give food to our body. We take care of our body like the first wife in this story. But unfortunately, at the end of our life, the body, the first ‘wife’ cannot follow us to the next world. As it is stated in a commentary, ‘When the last breath leaves our body, the healthy color of the face is transformed, and we lose the

appearance of radiant life. Our loved ones may gather around and lament, but to no avail. When such an event occurs, the body is sent into an open field and cremated, leaving only the white ashes.’ This is the destination of our body.

THE SECOND WIFE

What is the meaning of the second wife? The second ‘wife’ stands for our fortune, our material things, money, property, fame, position, and job that we worked hard to attain. We are attached to these material possessions. We are afraid to lose these material things and wish to possess much more. There is no limit. At the end of our life these things cannot follow us to death. Whatever fortune we have piled up, we must leave it. We came into this world with empty hands. During our life in this world, we have the illusion that we obtained a fortune. At death, our hands are empty. We can’t hold our fortune after our death, just as the second wife told her husband: ‘You hold me with your ego-centered selfishness. Now it is time to say goodbye.’

THE THIRD WIFE

What is meant by the third wife? Everyone has a third ‘wife’. This is the relationship of our parents, sister and brother, all relatives, friends, and society. They will go as far as the graveyard, with tears in their eyes. They are sympathetic and saddened...

Thus, we cannot depend on our physical body, our fortune, and our society. We are born alone and we die alone. No one will accompany us after our death.

THE FOURTH WIFE

Sakyamuni Buddha mentioned the fourth wife, who would accompany her husband after his death. What does that mean?

Page 28: Martial%20 science%208%20april

28

The fourth ‘wife’ is our mind [or Alaya consciousness]. When we deeply observe and recognize that our minds are filled with anger, greed, and dissatisfaction, we are having a good look at our lives. The anger, greed, and dissatisfaction are karma, the law of causation. We cannot be separated from our own karma. As the fourth wife told her dying husband, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’”

A lot has been said about strength, striking power, and weight lifting methods. I have

heard many opinions at my gym regarding number of sets, repetition, and ideal weight to pump up and down for conditioning. Now, out of all that…, who should we listen to, and who is right or wrong? Let’s begin by saying that there are many, many, many different strength training methods and divi-ded personal opinions in between professional coa-ches. They all could be correct or wrong depending on what your purpose, the specific needs of your combat discipline, and the time you have to pre-pare for the event you are training for. This means that what is best for weight lifter who is trying to break a record in squat, or sprinter, is not the best for a bodybuilder who intends to gain muscle mass, or get ripped. And what is the best choice for the bodybuilder, is for sure, the wrong one for a martial artist or a combat sport practitioner.

By definition, strength is the capacity to apply force on an object, using the body muscles, and is deter-mined by two main factors:

1-GENETIC FACTOR: which presets the most abundant type of cells (fibers) in the muscle mass, either way red, also called slow twitch fibers. This type of fibers play their main roll during aerobic

endurance types of exercises, such as jogging for a long time, swimming, walking, lifting weights to failure, etc., or white cells, also called fast twitch fibers. White twitch fibers are responsible with actions that require very fast and explosive mo-vements and maximum force, such as Jumping, sprinting, heavy lifting, throwing, etc.

The predominant type of cells is inherited and can-not be changed by training.

2-TYPE OF TRAINING: Focusing on right kind of exercises designed for your goals, combined with the correct planning which covers volume, intensity, rest, proper nutrition, etc. It is possible to increase the numbers of cells involved in the ac-tions, resulting in an increment of force the athlete is voluntarily able to exert.

Strength itself manifests in three different ways depending on the type of actions being done at a time, they are:

MAXIMUM FORCE: Is commonly seen in sports like Power lifting, and weight lifting, in which they work close to the limit capacity of the practitioner, sometimes referred as 1RM (one repetition maxi-mum), It’s the maximum amount of weight a per-son can lift or move in a single repetition, of any exercise, and is rarely seen in between the actions of martial arts sports, neither street fight. Unless somebody uses raw strength to push, pull or lift his opponent off the floor, which is exactly what tech-nical preparation teaches not to do.

STRENGTH AND MARTIAL ARTS, SOME OF ITS PRINCIPLES, AND GENERAL TRAINING TIPS

APRIL/2015 33

FAST FORCE EXPLOSIVE / REACTIVE: They re-quire an immediate recruitment of fast twitch mus-cle fibers for quick contraction to make the move-ment possible. We see this in actions like jumping, landing, sprinting, punching, kicking, Judo like quick pull, or any sudden explosive action done in the minimum time possible.

ENDURANCE OF FORCE (ENDURANCE STRENGTH): Is your capacity to maintain the muscle groups involved in any specific action, kee-ping the correspondent degree of contraction for a long period of time continuously. For example, a grappling situations in which a person is being shocked, he/she may have to resist a pull or a push for a long time from a very strong opponent. Ano-ther example in which this muscular ability manifests itself, is when repeating many, many times, very short actions that re-quire quick explosive contractions, for example, when an athlete fights for a long time in events without time cons-traints like MMA in its origins, is tiring and one must punch or kick again, and again until the end.According to the principles of sports training methodology, and its modern concepts, a well-balan-ced training program should dedicate time to develop each of those different types of strength explained above se-parately, during periods of time ca-lled cycles. The length of each indi-vidual cycles depends on the length of time an athlete has to prepare for an event, and the specific needs of di-fferent sports disciplines.

Implementing fast explosive force will increase your striking power and the performance of sud-den actions like Judo pull, throws, jumping, etc. while increasing your level of endurance stren-gth, will enable you of doing more repetitions of any specific action before muscle failure. The drills and exercises used to develop each specific type of strength are very different from each other, and they could be chosen

based on the type of muscle contraction that is ha-ppening in the muscle fiber when doing the exer-cise.Are you lost? Here are some general principles and tips that may be helpful:

1-ALWAYS WARM UP BEFORE ANY WEIGHT TRAINING SESSION, KEEPING IN MIND:

*A light stretching before training session, is always good but do not overdo it. Any movement with weight resistance shortens muscles fibers kee-ping some minimum degree of contraction (muscle tone). A long stretching session would not get you ready for lifting. It would be like taking a drowsy muscular relaxer pill, then trying to lift.

*If you jog for a warm up, about 3 to 8 minutes should be more than enough, because its purpose is to ele- vate your heart rate, improve the b l o o d flow to the muscles involved and w a r m them up. If you do it for too long,

you might be impeding yourself from working with your optimum

weight due to fatigue. Instead try focusing on few

repetitions of extensions, flexion, and rota-tions of the joins involved in the exercises to be

performed that day, and mainly, on more spe-cific exercises. For instance try a few sets with low weight and reps of the same exercise you are

going to do in that session, then increase them gradually until you reach the ac-

tual poundage you are going to work with. Your cardio session is not a proper warm up, for your stren-gth session with weights, even if you are going to work your legs the same day and regardless how much you sweat when you

d o it!

2-The type of force intended to be de-veloped in training sessions, will be determined by the relation Sets/Repe-t i t i o n s / Pounds/Rest in between

Page 34: Martial%20 science%208%20april

34

sets. As a general rule, the following percentages are widely accepted:

Power and explosiveness5-6 sets/6-8 reps/80-90% of 1RM/1-1/2min reco-very

Endurance strength2-4 sets/25-50 reps/up to60-80% of 1RM/-2 min recovery

Pure Strength but little power4-6 sets/1-5reps/90-95% of 1RM/2-3 min recovery.

3-Working above 95% of 1 RM has very few be-nefits in martial arts, and is dangerous, therefore please avoid unless you are advised and spotted by a knowledgeable coach, or training partner.

4-In an ideal scenario, a professional fighter, or anybody who has the time and dedication, would split his/her physical conditioning and techni-cal-tactical preparation, into separated training sessions, dedicating between 2-3 training sessions per cycle (around a week), to work on strength. If that is not you case, trying to get as close to it as possible, should help you to achieve measurable improvements sooner, if the rest of the elements of a well-planned training program are also meet.

5-If you only have time to practice between 2-3 ti-mes per week, and most do your physical condi-tioning and technical training in the same session; then always work on Power Strength (explosive-ness), before any other type of strength. If working different physical capacities, such as: speed, endu-rance, agility, flexibility, strength, coordination, etc. in the same conditioning training session, then do always, speed first before any other, and Strength before endurance.

6-Many coaches would plan an initial cycle of few weeks intending to develop power strength with exercises that cover the major muscle groups used during the most commonly seen actions of their discipline, example Bench presses, Squats, Arms flexion and extensions, Abs, etc., to follow

with another cycle of few weeks, during which the purpose is to develop Endurance Strength, using other types of exercises that cover multiple mus-cle groups such as clean and jerk, snatch, stepping on to a platform with weights, lounges, plyometric, circuit training etc.

7- I would choose always, free weights equipment, over any machine or cable pulling device anytime that is possible. It will allow you to develop more balance and coordination, plus avoid counting on the missing weight due to the major leverage sys-tem of the machines.

8-Increasing muscle mass could definitively be a consequence of strength training, but, unless the practitioner is intending to move to a higher weigh division, it should never be a main purpose over the development of the other capacities mentioned above.

9-Body building methods are ineffective for mar-tial arts conditioning. Their purpose is to increase muscle size, definition, and symmetry with an ex-treme low body fat. That could be detrimental for your health, and for sure, will not allow us to go through long training sessions of perfecting our form, combat drills, sparring, speed and enduran-ce training, etc., that we do almost every day. Not to mention all those different types of supplements used in bodybuilding that includes not only exces-sive amounts of proteins and vitamins, but steroids, anabolic, HGH, etc. That have already proven to have a catastrophic effect in the practitioner’s athle-tic performance, and their social lives also.

A weight training program focused on isolated muscles, makes sense for a body builder, or some-body who works out with the intention to impro-ve his/her fitness level. Very often they would do a lots of repetitions until muscle failure. Increasing size (“getting big”), improving symmetry, or bur-ning fat (“getting cut”) are their main objectives. In other words they try to achieve an appearance, a look, without a concern for improving their perfor-mance capacity like we do. They use what is called a “split body part routine”, meaning they work di-

Page 35: Martial%20 science%208%20april

fferent muscle groups on different days, they try to isolate the muscle, and more likely would work every muscle only once per cycle only. To exercise the entire body it usually takes a week, and as many good coaches know; weight training five days a week leaves little time to work on speed, cardio, coordination, flexibility, agility, endurance, and obviously technical preparation.

Discussing bodybuilding methods should be irrelevant to most martial artists, because it hinders our purposes. Unfortunately most martial artists who don’t have proper guidance use them, together with other common gym concepts of being in shape due to popularity rather than practicality. Avoid them because they will not develop the type of strength we need for fighting.

Regardless of the motivation that brings you inside the dojo, and your personal approach to martial arts, whether is tournaments, physical and spiritual improvement/growth, self-defense, or any other; apply these principles for optimum success when strength building for your martial arts discipline. Ex-pose yourself to hardcore training that makes you a martial artist rather than a hobbyist who builds muscle without a purpose.

WHEN THERE IS A WEAPON AGAINST us. Tips against knife attacksBy: Sensei Henry Binerfa

Photos Courtesy: Hombu Dojo ShinKaido Ryu

Can we unarm a man who plans to make an end of our lives? It is likely that, most expert or beginner masters would quickly respond “Yes”. But there is a small group of persons where I am included who would not respond such a difficult question with simple words; a deep analysis on a situation related to life or death is needed.

I have noticed that sometimes the techniques tau-ght at the Dojos are far from the reality that the practitioners will face at the streets. So, they cannot face them adequately. It is derived from their lack of physical and psychological training.

From my point of view, to unarm someone is a complex task, it is dangerous and demands a full study, based on respect and seriousness; one must try to choose real performance techniques for a real environment. But, these elements do not work if they are not supported by theoretical foundations that will help to surpass this type of situation.

Page 37: Martial%20 science%208%20april

APRIL/2015 37

Below, I will show a selection of seven points or steps to be taken into consideration to confront a high intensity aggression:

1. To evaluate the situation,

2. To have a clear general vision of the opponent,

3. To locate the direction of the attack,

4. To come out the line of the attack,

5. To turn aside, control and address the weapon to the right direction,

6. To make him lose the weapon,

7. To always make sure that the action gets to an end.

Now, let’s explain the importance of these elements one by one:

1-TO EVALUATE THE SITUATION:

This concept is based on our determination to eva-luate the real possibilities we have to face the oppo-nent. To know about the kind of weapon the oppo-nent has; if is a large cutting edge, if it is medium or small; or if it is a stick or a fire weapon, etc.

Once we are familiar with these elements, it is pos-sible to consider our possibilities to decide whether to escape from the situation or to face it, so as to di-minish the opponent’s strength. To evaluate the si-tuation, allows studying the elements within each; be it, a belt, a shirt, a folder, etc. Such media, can be useful to protect ourselves from the aggressor and to avoid injury or keeping at a distance.

We frequently do not find much time for many things, but to evaluate the situation, allows us to carry out the right action at the right moment, this reaction usually appears by instinct and it improves with daily practice.

2-TO HAVE A CLEAR GENERAL VISION OF THE OPPONENT:

Where most we direct our eyes on this type of con-frontation? A great many think that we must look directly to the opponent’s eyes; many others argue about this and state that we must concentrate on the fist where the weapon is carried. In my opinion, one must look to the opponent in general; that’s my philosophy. It will help us to watch the hands of the opponent; many fighters have injured for they have only looked at the opponent’s armed hand, while the other was also armed. Besides, with long-dis-tance and wide vision it can be determined if there is another aggressor in the fight, what is very com-mon by these violent days.

A panoramic vision contributes to value the direc-tion of the attack and to avoid misleading in rela-tion to looking at the hands which confuse us. Not

Page 38: Martial%20 science%208%20april

38

to look at the opponent’s eyes frees us from intimi-dation; please, believe that there are faces and body expressions that might even paralyze with fear and nervousness. There is another shortcoming when we try to read the opponents’ action by looking at their eyes, and it is precisely that they keep them keep them close, so that we cannot infer the action they that are about to perform.

A Japanese master once stated: “when one is sepa-rated from the opponent, he must be regarded as a big tree spotted from a distance”.

3-TO LOCATE THE DIRECTION OF THE ATTACK:

It is important to locate the direction of the attack, since it helps us to find the right technique to face the action developed in the attack. This aspect is not difficult to understand with simple words: it consists of gaining control over the direction that the attack reaches at some points which may adopt the following forms:

Attack directed straight

low

An attack directed straight

up

An attack directed straight

down

A downward diagonal

slash

A horizontal attack low

A horizontal attack high

A horizontal attack return

a. No. 1 Angle of Attack. A downward diagonal slash, stab, or strike toward the left side of the de-fender’s head, neck, or torso.

b. No. 2 Angle of Attack. A downward diagonal slash, stab, or strike toward the right side of the de-fender’s head, neck, or torso.

c. No. 3 Angle of Attack. A horizontal attack to the left side of the defender’s torso in the ribs, side, or hip region.

d. No. 4 Angle of Attack. The same as No. 3 angle, but to the right side.

e. No. 5 Angle of Attack. A jabbing, lunging, or

punching attack directed straight toward the defender’s front.

f. No. 6 Angle of Attack. An attack directed straight down upon the defender.

g. No. 7 Angle of Attack. An upward diagonal at-tack toward the defender’s lower-left side.

h. No. 8 Angle of Attack. An upward diagonal at-tack toward the defender’s lower-right side.

i. No. 9 Angle of Attack. An attack directed straight up-for example, to the defender’s groin.

These could be the main forms of attack that we may face. This idea demands the application of

ANGLES OF ATTACK.

Page 40: Martial%20 science%208%20april

40

the second aspect, since it is easier to determine the type of attack if we have a general vision of the opponent. We are compelled to study the different forms of attacks to accurate localize its direction.

4-TO COME OUT THE LINE OF THE ATTACK:

To escape from the line of attack is an art that the Japanese call Tai sabaki; it is the art to protect our-selves with the body keeping the right balance to respond to the opponent’s attack. To come out the lines of attacks cannot be ignored on this kind of situation; if one forgets to do this and does not try hard, he will never get unhurt in a real confronta-tion. If the line of attack is forsaken fulfilling right move-ments it becomes easier to escape from the punches and we are trained to react in an accurate manner. This concept can be clearly seen on the following

EXAMPLE:

Imagine that you are standing at the railway, and suddenly you spot a train coming to you at a very high speed; you stand still as it gets closer and clo-ser; the risk and the train together. You get nervous, but what would you do? Granted that, you dear reader would move lateral, away from the railway; of course, you will never move backward. Thus how we must move to face an armed opponent; we must carefully choose the appropriate movement, so that, we come out the distance of the weapon. This is the first action to be considered to keep ourselves alive.

5-TO TURN ASIDE, CONTROL AND ADDRESS THE WEAPON TO THE RIGHT DIRECTION:

Once the Tai sabaki has been performed, to turn aside to control and address the weapon becomes almost an instinctive action. This action is very important, since it allows controlling the situation for a while and at the same time to stop the threat of the weapon. Second, we go over addressing the hand to the exact place, in the majority of the cases, this action is aimed at applying sprain techniques in the arm or wrist of the aggressor, so as to find an

equilibrium of strengths and thus to stop to suffer from uneven confrontation.

Above all, I recommend you to try to control the hand of the weapon in a real conflict. Though the possibility to get injured continues to be, the right control reduces it to its minimum. I specially call your attention towards selecting the technique that allows you to grab and control the attack.

6-TO MAKE THE AGGRESSOR LOSE THE WEAPON

The risk does not end by turning aside or contro-lling the arm of the weapon, but when the aggres-sor has lost the weapon. We have reached the final aim of the technique to be used against this kind of situation.

Concentration must focus on only one principle: to unarm the opponent, leaving no space to the supe-

Page 41: Martial%20 science%208%20april

riority he once had. Psychological studies demons-trate that the person who regularly uses weapons looses them at a fight; this action makes him feel defenseless as he steps back to the man he always was; the one who needs a weapon to feel stronger or a little more powerful.

7- TO ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT THE ACTION GETS TO AN END

The removal of the weapon suppresses the threat and the apparent superiority that there once was; but the conflict has not yet finished; we have just got to the last phase, the time for punishing the ag-gressor and leaving him absolutely unable to start a new fight has come. Besides, we cannot let oursel-ves go fool by someone who pretends to be injured or dead so as to beat us on our backs; such things should never happen.

Sometimes, we can evaluate when to end the fight in accordance with the intentions of the aggressor and the kind of weapon he used. This is a very di-fficult situation, since we must keep ourselves alive; so, it is advisable not to forget to finish off with a knock down as a guarantee that he does not rebels again.

When and how did you come to the practice of martial arts?

My dad was an Martial arts teacher. He was an certified teacher in Judo, Jiu Jitsu (tradional), kara-te and taekwon-do

So at the the age of 4 i started judo, at 7 with tae-kwon-do and at 11 with Jiu jitsuLater on i picked up some Boxing and Thai Boxing

In november 1993 i introduced BJJ In europe

How did you get to enter the UFC II?

There was an advertisment in an magazine. That was called KO magazine, It was ownedd nu Ino Alberga (the first teacher of Gegard Mousasi by the way) The asked for athletes in an open tourna-ment with less rijles than usual.

I looked for a challenge in my life and the UFC was the one.

Did you already know something of Bra-zilian Jiu Jitsu before entering the UFC?

I introduced BJJ in europe in november 1993That was sort of the same time period

There was some news about BJJ and no rules mat-ches. But the magazines where mainly interested in Thai Boxing and the exotic. Arts

In that fight with Royce Gracie, two of you looked at each other into the eyes for several seconds. What were you thinking then?

When i have a fight. I don’t try to think. Just keeping focused on the situation. And try to Apply what i have learned and trained for.

And you always train for your Waterloo. That is the one where you meet thee one which is the better fighter that day and gives you the Sparkle to continue training and keep on learning

Me and my dad, my biggest inspirator...

Next being the first in europe with BJJ. This was the first BJJ seminar in Scandinavia

I looked for a challenge in my life and the UFC

was the one.

Page 46: Martial%20 science%208%20april

46

What did you learn from brazilian jiu jitsu? How this contributed to your knowledge of previous martial arts?

BJJ is totally different than other sports or arts.I have been training and teaching all my life. But BJJ brought something different. Don’t ask me how or what. But it changed my life.

Also the match with Royce, liborio and training with Renzo and RicksonMade a profound and deep change of mindset of my view on Martial arts / MMA

What do you think of the UFC today, compared to UFC 90 where you fou-ght.

It is a different gameYou can’t compare.

At that time we did not had the knowledge we have like today.

The good thing was that there where no rounds. So you need to fight to survive. Now you can go in.. Make it thru some rounds and the judges decide

At that day it was style vs style. Now everybody is Well educatedd and knots a bit of everything.Only the top hybrids will stand out

Was recently asked: What happened to Remco Pardoel? And now I pass the question to you. What are you doing now?

I changed my life in 2009 / 2010Due to some Personal reasons.

Now i al an club manager (same profession Again :)) for the biggest fitness / Health chain in europe.

Next to that i still work with some professionals for improving their technique and game plan. My other passion being an DJ

When the opportunity is there i still try to compete

Page 47: Martial%20 science%208%20april

APRIL/2015 47

I have a lot of seminars. Being the coach of the national team for ne Waza / BJJ for the dutch Judo Union. I teach BJJ / MMA a fee times a week. I am an MMA referee on some events outside of the Netherlands. I do color commentating for some MMA events for two tv channels in europe and when there is some time i am DJ ( deep house and techno is my style)

What martial arts and music mean to you?

I can’t live with them.Music and martial arts are always there. They support, they lift you up, makes you smile,

they teach you lessons in life and are a part of ma-king me the better person i am today

Is there any story throughout your career that you would like to share with us?

There are so many storiesI’ve been blessed to meet Great persons and perso-nalities in my lifeSo by. Mentioning one.I will do short on a Great memorystick with ano-ther...

DEADLY ANGAM FIGHTING STYLES

There is a small island which is little known in this world… it is si-tuated in the center of a major trading route and complete with vast natural resources …. Ideal climate for agriculture, and cultivation …. It attracted the attention of the nations who were the superpowers at the time.. The tiny island nation was attempted to be conquered countless times… But None were able to subdue this land through the art of war. The reason was that this small insignificant looking country had an over 5000 years history and culture that evolved with the test of time… and with it a powerful martial art that runs through the very life blood of its countrymen. A fierce fighting style replete with ancient technique… tempered in the iron will of island patriots …fashioned in to an unstoppable martial art.

The age of King Ravana which was some 6000 years ago, is considered to be the time when the art of Angam was at its pinnacle. Ravana was said to be a specialist in pressure point healing. This is evident in the medical writings done by Ravana. The association between Ra-vana and Angam it is strong, it is such that, even today, Angam gurus begin their training only after lighting a lamp in memory of this ancient Sri Lankan King. The art of Angam which was developed for so many thou-sands of years has done its best in protecting Sri Lanka from its enemies.

Ravana is said to have also been a specialist in all forms of Angam. History tells us that he has written several books about it as well. This master in Angam is said to

have trained all his soldiers, cavalry and other types of mounted troops in the art of Angam.

Ravana is also said to have ruled over many states in southern and central India. To maintain such a large empire, it is obvious that the aid of something as for-midable as Angampora was essential. Even now, after all these ages, certain families still have deadly Angam fighting styles names after Ravana, which specifically use pressure points to disable and eliminate ones oppo-nents.

The history of angam had never been recorded on an official treatise. However it is a privilege that the tech-nical aspects of angam had been documented by angam warrior clans of Sri Lankan history. All that we have

are inconsistent records of instances in history where it has appeared but briefly, only disappear from the books of history leaving gaps as well as a lot of unanswered questions.

Angam is believed to have been a part of the ancient culture of Sri Lanka that dates back to over 10000 years. It had evolved from generation to generation, standing the formidable test of time, and once became an indis-pensable part of the Sri Lankan way of life. For centuries the country went through most turbulent eras that required it’s rulers to muster defenses with the help of their fellow countrymen, to battle disturbances that came from foreign lands as well as dissention from within.

Page 53: Martial%20 science%208%20april

The monarchy maintained a reasonable army that con-sisted of full time soldiers, but the majority of country-men were ready to answer the call to arms in the name of king and country. Hence Masters of Angam were sca-ttered throughout the land under whom civilians who engaged in different trade such as farming, pottery, also trained in the martial arts for mental and physical dis-cipline as much as to be able to protect their country in a time of need. Out of these schools several managed to be outstanding and make the books of history. Af-ter years of insurgency, the foreign invaders managed to divide and conquer the island through trickery. This spelled fatal to the Sri Lankan martial art world, as its new foreign rulers, the appointed governor of Ceylon Robert Brownrigg banned and outlawed the practice of Agam. Extreme measures were taken that included im-prisonment, persecution, and an order to shoot in the knees of any known practitioner of the art.

Page 54: Martial%20 science%208%20april

54

During the rule of Sri Lanka by the British, in the year 1818 it has been recorded on official documentation that the practice of the art was banned as part of their initiatives to dampen the efforts of the nation’s patriots to free the country from foreign dominance.

In the outset of such times, many (gurus) masters of the art, along with its avid practitioners went underground, and employed various methods of concealing the art in plain sight.

Due to the rich cultural heritage of its island nation Angam has an aesthetic value, in terms of rituals sym-bolism, and the mystique. Like all Martial Arts it had unarmed combat techniques, grips and locks as well as mastery in weaponry.

There are many varied views out there regarding this ancient art…. But what really is angam? According to the grand masters Angam has 2 different subject areas that can stand alone individually as vast bodies of study. Although some of these areas have been lost with the decay of time, but most of it has been preserved by true masters who exist to this day with their perseverance and true patronage of the art.

There are 2 aspects to this martial art that makes it fully integrated in to the cultural belief system of its people. These areas are namely

1. “Angampora”unarmed combat2. “Illangampora” armed combat

ANGAMPORA (UNARMED COMBAT)

Unarmed Combat which is commonly known as “an-gam pora” has its distinct meaning. “Angam” refers to the body while “Pora” refers to combat. So while angam-pora means the martial use of the limbs without the use of weapons, it is also divided in to three main categories.

1. Pora Harammba (offensive and defensive techniques)2. Gata Harammba (grips and locks)3. Maru Kala (vital point attacks) 1. Pora Harammba (offensive and defensive techniques)

This are covers the techniques relate to the offensive execution of different strikes and the defensive uses of a vast variety of blocks. In angam the artful execution of foot work is essential in mastering its powerful tech-niques.

In theory the master prompts his students to train their students to cultivate a strong metal and physical apti-tude that requires them to train their proverbial eagle eye, for watch fullness, the Peacocks hearing, listen to the movements of the enemy, the leap of the monkey, to stay agile and supple, the walk of the tiger that refers to the readiness and alertness in ones movements, the grapple of a bear, , the gait of the that refers to strength needed for ground fighting and executing neutralizing techniques.

These techniques are taught in the form of movement sets that includes different combinations of strikes and block with the relevant foot work. Students are taught these sets of movements, from basic to more advanced varieties.

2. GATA HARAMMBA (GRIPS AND LOCKS)

Grips and lock in angam is an area that clearly set the art part from many others in the world. Over the years this areas has proven to be one of the most deadly and practical techniques to be taught in the angam maduwa (dojo). It requires both strength and skill with the addi-

tion of extensive training in or to execute perfectly and effectively.

Different kinds of gripping and grappling techniques exists to counter different sorts of assaults. Those that are specifically used to neutralize an enemy who may strike with hand, foot, knife, sward… ect…

In reverse, the counters attack/releasing technique for a grip or a lock is also a separate area of study.

3. MARU KALA (VITAL POINT ATTACKS)

Attacking specific pressure points of the body of an opponent’s is a deadly technique in angam. This is known as “Maru kalawa”, can be called the “Art of Death”. But this at it not taught by the angam guru (master) to every student. Only the most trusted and experienced students are taught after extensive ceremonies offered to the god Rawana, and taking 7 oaths.

A knowledge of astrology is essential in order to use this art effectively. The art speaks of 107 major pressure point of the body, and 12 deadly ones. There are many strikes that are executed with pressure points

• Attacking while griping pressure points• Attacking points that cause sudden death• Neutralizing a limb • Attacking to induce blood vomiting• Attacking mathematically (according to astrology) to caise death time after a specific cause to death. • Striking to make enemy pass out

Page 56: Martial%20 science%208%20april

56

• Attacking to make ill for an extend period of time.• Striking to induce the creation of bodily excre-ment

Likewise, this kind of technique is unique to angam.

Along with the art of striking pressure points, it also re-lated to its medical application for curative results.

When training, master and students alike take care to be very cautious. And in the case of an injury during practice, the medical applications are used to treat the injury. Experts in the art can treat ailments by applying the right amount of pressure to the right pressure points.

ILLANGAM PORA ARMED COMBAT

Ilnampora is another special part of Angam. This is known as the armed combat techniques of Angam. To be complete and competent Angam practitioner, the knowledge of Illngam is essential. Normally illangam is taught to a student after at least two years in to his tra-ining. Learning this requires a lot of discipline and de-dication. Generally students are taught the techniques pertaining to all weapons; one can only “master” two or three weapons according to one’s physical prowess. Most of the weapons used for practicing are cleansed with specialized rituals. A student must be granted per-mission from the guru in order to learn particular wea-pon, and this is signified by performing a special ritual where the weapon is handed over to the student by the guru.

This art consists of 21 weapons. There are 4 main cate-gories in this

1. Curved weapons2. Circular weapons3. Long weapons4. Blunt weapons

SWORD TECHNIQUES

The sword is the most superior and prominent weapon used in angam, and for centuries Angam practitioners have been famous all over the Asia for their sword play.

There are 110 varied techniques in terms of illangam sword play, and 28 types of swords. Here single sword, twin swords, and four sword sword play is prominent.

A well trained illangam swordsman has ability to battle with a large group of enemies.

The special relationship between a sword and it’s owner is signified by the age old ritual where the weapon is forged according to the horoscopic auspicious time of its owner, an also seasoned using oil and poisons which are also made out of herbs that are selected according to the owners horoscope. A custom made sword of this kind is considered as guardian of its owner and will notlet him/her be harmed by another weapon, nor can that sword it’s self be used to harm it’s owner.

According to folk lore, expert sword fighters of medie-val sri lanka were able to attack while somersaulting over enemy heads.

BELT SWORD

A unique and most prominent weapon used in illangam is the welayudaya. It can be known as the belt swords. It is mainly used to attack a large number of surrounding enemies at once. It is called “wela yudhaya”, because it is used while swirling around one’s own body. It is made of steel blades that are about 1 inch in width and 6 feet in length. It comes in single blade, tri blade, six blade variations. When it is played with both hands, with two weapons in each hand, no one can approach close enou-gh to attack. But the user must be extremely careful as it will cause serious injury if not done correctly after care-ful practice. This has been used normally as a last resort, when a single fighter has to take on a large number of surrounding enemies at once.

KNUCKLE DUSTER

Knuckle duster is an important weapon. It is used sin-gle and twin movement techniques. This weapon is made using the horns of bulls. This mostly causes bone shattering, the strike may heal from the outside, but the venom of the bulls’ horn makes inflammation from the inside.

In illangam there are a lot of techniques For the Dagger, the Horn Dagger, the battle axe. Angam practitioners are honed in, any defensive techniques that are taught in order use when an enemy attacks using any of the-se weapons. The specialty of the battle axe is that once attacked and lodged in to an opponent’s flesh, it will be difficult to remove, and cause more damage if an at-tempted to remove.

Among the many style in Illangam, there are a vast va-riety of the double wielding of the heavy cudgel and the double wielded short cudgel styles.

In modern placement of Angampora

Sri Lankan Traditional Indigenous Martial Art As-sociation (STIMA) is born through the collabora-tion of gurus and student from various angam clans who’s singular goal is to sharing knowledge and the preservation of this art by researching, categorizing, organizing and storing knowledge in one place to be carried forward for future generations. Currently STIMA has reached international martial art arena with staring two international branches in Germany and Switzerland and STIMA also welcomes anyone who like to learn Angampora to start training with us. A Travelling Ronin

Lohan Kung Fu: School of Chinese Martial Arts:

Parker, COBy: Martin “travelling ronin” FranshaM

BACKGROUND: I was going to Colorado and I didn’t know anyone to train with. Normally I go to Google to give me a school to reach out too but this time I decided to try something different. I participate in a forum LinkedIn and decided to ask my network if they knew anyone that I could learn from. A friend of mine, Matt Relyea, told me that I had to check out the “School of Chinese Martial Arts.” An email and phone call later I was having coffee with Shifu Wayne Hinton.

Lohan Kung Fu can be beautifully graceful and wickedly powerful.

After a great conversation where we discussed our past training and where we had both come from

Shifu Wayne took some time to work with me per-sonally before class started. On his floor I noticed that there were two triangles. I have seen triangles in almost every Martial Art I have visit. They are a fundamental piece of architectural engineering due to the strength that the structure creates. The strength they confer on the human body is no different.

When Shifu Wayne took me over to the triangles and asked me what I saw. I talked about structure and strength and how the triangle granted both. He smiled and then added to my answer pointing out that the triangle on the floor also showed how to take structure. To illustrate the point he shoved me straight on. Predictably, I rocked back on my rear leg and returned to my fighting stance. Taking a step to the side he gave me a much gentler push. No longer able to brace myself I rocked back and ended up pedalling through the air to catch my balance.

Shifu Wayne pointed out to me that we are all essentially three-legged tables that only have two legs. You need to understand not only your own structure but your opponent’s as well. It was a pertinent lesson that you need to not only focus on yourself but on yourself but on your assailant as well. Quoting Sun Tzu, “If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles*.”

Page 59: Martial%20 science%208%20april

Takedowns on triangles. Sifu Wayne gave me a great lesson on balance.

WHAT DID I LEARN?: Lohan Kung Fu is charac-terised by large swing hands. Their big movements are designed to help a fighter generate the maxi-mum amount of power possible. There are several very good reasons to train like this. First, you can offset relative strength. There will always be stron-ger fighters and you may require additional power to win the fight. In the Lohan system you use body mechanics to build that additional power which can give a “weaker” fighter a strength advantage over a much “stronger” opponent.

Lohan fighters training with weights to develop power.

However, the second reason is even more im-portant. These big movements teach you to carry through on your strikes. A friend of mine, Paul Ingram of the Kali Center, often says “under pressure you will perform at your lowest level of training.” I have seen really good fighters begin to choke under stress and begin to pull their pun-ches. Once this happens that fighter is no longer committed to the attack and they get picked apart.

Lohan Kung Fu gets fighters to always commit to their attacks. When Lohan fighters fall back on their training they are always active and always striking. Some of the striking might look wild but techniques are sound and aggression has its own value. Roy Nelson, a Kung Fu practitioner, uses these techniques all the time to lay fighters out in the UFC. Similar techniques always give him a“puncher’s chance” and he seems to chance on luck a lot. After all, a good defense is a strong offense.

Page 60: Martial%20 science%208%20april

60

WHAT WAS AWESOME?: Coming from a Kung Fu background I loved the atmosphere of a tra-ditional school. But what really stood out to me was the philosophy of “many trees, one forest.” You will see this quote on the website and in everything that Shifu Wayne is teaching. When I spoke to with him, Shifu Wayne explained to me that a number of his students had backgrounds in numerous Martial Arts. He had two choices, he could try to remake each student in his image or embrace the differences in his charges.

Thankfully, Shifu Wayne has chosen to embrace to the later. Instead of forced conformity he provides a framework for his students to follow but encou-rages them to add their own flavour. By giving a structure and system the students have all the tools they need in order to effective fighters yet the freedom to grow and experiment.

Continuing to drive forward I crash into my partner.

CONCLUSION: I had a great time with Shifu Wayne learning about Lohan Kung Fu. It is both amazingly simple and incredibly complex. I can see why the basic techniques are staples of top MMA Fighters. Kung Fu will always be a balance of grace and raw power. Lohan Kung Fu has both these qualities in spades.

School of Chinese Martial Arts is a great place to train Traditional Kung Fu.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST STARTED MARTIAL ARTS?

The first time I opened the doors of a Dojo was in 1984 when I was 10 years old. I started training in Shotokan Karate and when I turned 17, I became a black belt. I also trained a little in Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu (Wu Shu), and Full Contact. In the discipline of Full Contact, I had two great teachers: André Tavernier and William Delval in Brussels, Belgium.

William Delval was Claude Goetz assistant professor Jean - Claude Van Damme. Then later I started learning Nunchaku, thanks to my admiration of Bruce Lee and his films! I prac-ticed this discipline with a global professional, Kim Silver. I was the winner of the European Cup Artistic Nunchaku. 1994 and 2000.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO TRY YOUR LUCK IN THE FILM INDUSTRY IN AMERICA?

Since I was a kid, I dreamt of being in films. Nearly all of my favorite action films were American. Also a lot of big stars in martial arts are American such as Chuck Norris, Bill Wallace, and Joe Lewis. I love the United States because people are very open. I made a lot of appearances in various film projects in France and Belgium, but from my experience, I see that the-re are more opportunities in the US.

DID YOU EVER HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET AND WORK WITH SOME GREAT PEOPLE IN MAR-TIAL ARTS WHILE IN NORTH AMERICA?

Yes, I was able to meet some great people when I was at Dra-gonfest in Burbank, CA. I was also lucky enough to train with Grand Master Billy Blanks in Los Angeles and Master Todd at American Kempo Karate in San Diego.

HOW ABOUT IN EUROPE?

In Europe, I had the chance to do a seminar with Scott Adkins in London. It was a really great experience. He’s very open and humble.

Page 64: Martial%20 science%208%20april

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR EXPERIENCES IN MARTIAL ARTS FILM?

I had the chance to work in a film with Jean - Claude Van Damme: “JCVD”. It’s a great experience working with him.

Jalal Merhi gave me a great opportu-nity to be in his TV Show, Master of the Art in Toronto. I was also a fan of Jalal when I was a teenager. He is very down to Earth and I respect him a lot.

In a French action film, “Svolta” I play the villain. In one scene I face the main actor with nunchaku in honor of Bruce Lee.

I also did a lot of appearances in Eu-ropean TV show with my Nunchaku but now I work a lot in my career for movies while remaining active in training. I did

Page 65: Martial%20 science%208%20april

a demonstration at the world’s largest exhibi-tion of martial arts in the Martial Arts Festival in Paris - Bercy in France too. The event had more than 150,000 people with live TV broad-casting!

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR LATEST PROJECTS?

I just finished working in the pre-production of a short film in San Diego called “The As-sassin Exit,” in which I play an ex- assassin who’s looking for his daughter. Also, I have a big project with director Chris Power. One of his works is a horror film called “Long Pigs”,

which is one of my favorites, but the project we’re working on is an action film “The French Dragon”. We just recently finished shooting a demo. I’m really looking forward to working on this project! I cannot say anymore for now... It’s a SURPRISE!

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON MMA?

I will say that it’s definitely what is in right now. Although I must confess that I prefer Kic-kboxing and Full Contact. Don’t get me wrong though, I do enjoy watching it. I’m a big fan of Georges St. Pierre.

Page 66: Martial%20 science%208%20april

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR TRAINING METHODS?

I do a lot of stretching. Flexibility is very important in martial arts. When training with Nunchaku, I do a lot of artistic Kata figures.

WHO ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRAIN WITH?

Michael Jai White is one. I like his style. The-

re are also many others, but the list is too long to name all of them.

HOW LONG DO YOU SUPPOSE IT WOULD TAKE TO BECOME AN EXPERT IN NUNCHAKU?It all depends on the practitioner. Generally with 2 years of practice, there’s a good chance that someone can be at a decent level. I will say though, that it will take at least 5 years to have full control of the weapon.

Page 67: Martial%20 science%208%20april

APRIL/2015 67

WHAT TYPE OF NUNCHAKU WOULD YOU PREFER A BEGINNER TO START WITH?

I would recommend working with one made of flexible plastic so it won’t hurt as much because it can be very dangerous when handling this weapon. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or expert, you WILL hit yourself at least once.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GIVE TO EVERYONE READING THIS?

A positive message of course! Mainly what I would like to say to them is to practice as much as possible, stay in shape and don’t give up. I had a lot of people tell me that my dream is too big for me to accomplish and I’m just wasting my time. If I would’ve done what they told me, I don’t think I would ever have an opportunity to achieve the things that I have achieved, like be in this maga-zine. Another thing I would like to say is never turn your back on the ones who did believe in you and supported you when others didn’t. Those are the people you want close to you.
