AN INTRODUCTION TO MARWAR

‘Marwar’, literally the land of death is the name given to large swathes of the Thar Desert, west of the Aravali Mountains. In

this arid land of extreme climate, annual rainfall can be as little as 10cms, maximum temperatures in summer touch 50

Degree Celsius and the minimum plummets to freezing point in winter.

The Gurjara Pratiharas established a kingdom at Mandore, about 9 kms from Jodhpur in the 6th century AD. By the end of

the 12th century, Mohammed Ghori, the Afghan conqueror, had defeated Prithviraj Chauhan – the last Hindu ruler of Delhi.

He proceeded to capture the Rajput kingdom of Kannauj (in present day Uttar Pradesh), bringing large parts of Northern

India under Muslim rule for the first time. The Rajputs of the region are understood to have fled west, establishing a Rathore

kingdom around present day Jodhpur in the 13th Century. The Kingdom became part of the Mughal Empire in the mid-16th

century when Akbar’s army defeated Rao Malladeva of Jodhpur.

This arid, sparsely populated region is home to many interesting communities, including the Bishnoi tribe that worships

animals. This has ensured the survival of endemic wildlife, including the Chinkara(Indian Black buck), the desert fox and the

Nilgai(an Indian Gazelle). The few oases and man-made lakes are also home to a number of migratory birds in winter with

local communities, like those in Kheechan helping their migrant visitors with grain. Locally available sandstone that varies in

colour from brick red around Bikaner to golden yellow at Jaisalmer provides excellent construction material, lends itself well

to carving, and obviates the need for paint and plaster. Little wonder then that this otherwise barren land houses some

architectural marvels and buildings within a town while architecturally distinct, appear rather uniform.

The region gave the World Marwari horses – India’s finest, Maharana Pratap’s famous steed, Chetak was one specimen. Long

pants called Jodhpurs are still used across the world by horse riders. The Marwari people were amongst India’s first and

finest business communities and their capital, acumen and risk appetite continue to drive the Indian economy today. BACK
