“BUILDING ON OUR FAITH”: We have started our “Capital Campaign” to raise funds for the replacement of our hall roof in the Spring (2018), and several other repairs of the Church, hall and rectory. All parishioners will receive a pledge form as well as a letter explaining and requesting your financial help to complete this work. Our target is to raise $150,000.00. So far 49 families have made the pledges. Thanks to everyone who has already made the pledges. I ask every family who has not made the pledges to make your pledge before March 1, 2018 so that we will be able to finish this work in the Spring.

THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS MARY AND JOSEPH
Sunday, December 31, 2017
MASS INTENTIONS: Every Mass is a wonderful gift of God for us. We consciously recall the love of God poured out for us in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. At each Mass all the intentions of all God’s people, both living and dead, are included. Envelopes are placed at the entrance of the church. If you need a specific date please let us know at least one month in advance.
WHY SHOULD I FEEL BAD ? :Once, there was this guy,
who was in love with a girl. She wasn’t the most beautiful and
gorgeous but for him, she was everything. He used to dream
about her, about spending the rest of life with her. His friends
told him, “why do you dream so much about her when you
don’t even know if she loves you or not? First, tell her your
feelings, and get to know if she likes you or not”. He felt that
was the right way. The girl knew from the beginning, that this
guy loves her. One day when he proposed, she rejected
him. His friends thought he would take alcohol, drugs etc and
ruin his life. To their surprise, he was not depressed. When they
asked him how was it that he is not sad, he replied, “‘why
should I feel bad? I lost one who never loved me and she lost
the one who really loved and cared for her.” Moral: True Love
is Hard to Get. Love is all about giving to other person
without greed of gaining anything in return, if other person
rejects it, its him/her who will be losing the most important
thing in life. So never feel dejected.
A SOLDIER’S STORY: A story is told about a soldier who
was finally coming home after
having fought in Vietnam. He called
his parents from San
Francisco. “Mom and Dad, I’m
coming home, but I have a favor to
ask. I have a friend I’d like to bring
home with me. “Sure,” they replied,
“we’d love to meet him.” “There’s
something you should know,” the
son continued, “he was hurt pretty
badly in the fighting. He stepped on a Land mine and lost an
arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to
come live with us.” “I’m sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can
help him find somewhere to live.” “No, Mom and Dad, I want
him to live with us.” “Son,” said the father, “you don’t know
what you’re asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a
terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we
can’t let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you
should just come home and forget about this guy. He’ll find a
way to live on his own.” At that point, the son hung up the
phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days
later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco
police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they
were told. The police believed it was suicide. The grief-stricken
parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue
to identify the body of their son. They recognized him, but to
their horror, they also discovered something they didn’t know,
their son had only one arm and one leg. Moral: The parents in
this story are like many of us. We find it easy to love those who
are good-looking or fun to have around, but we don’t like
people who inconvenience us or make us feel uncomfortable.
We would rather stay away from people who aren’t as healthy,
beautiful, or smart as we are. Thankfully, there’s someone
who won’t treat us that way. Someone who loves us with an
unconditional love that welcomes us into the forever family,
regardless of how messed up we are. Tonight, before you tuck
yourself in for the night, say a little prayer that God will give
you the strength you need to accept people as they are, and to
help us all be more understanding of those who are different
from us.
Today we celebrate the Feast
of the Holy Family of Jesus,
Mary and Joseph. The feast
of the Holy Family is the
natural continuation of the
Christmas Season. All the
scripture readings of today
reflect on aspects of family
including the duties and
blessings that come about as
a result of the faithful living
of family life. In the creation narrative of the Bible we read that
God created man in his image and likeness and placed him in a
family. Pope Leo XIII promoted the feast as a way to counter
the breakdown of the family unit. Towards the end of the
nineteenth century and at the beginning of twentieth, prompted
the popes, especially the far-sighted Leo XIII, to promote the
observance of this feast with the hope that it might instill into
Christian families something of the faithful love and the
devoted attachment that characterize the family of Nazareth.
The primary purpose of the Church in instituting and promoting
this feast is to present the Holy Family as the model and
exemplar of all Christian families. Today’s readings of the feast
of the Holy Family proclaim that God does not intend
individuals, especially people in a family, to live in a world of
violence, disharmony and intimidation. Rather, God desires all
to flourish in families in which love of God and love of the
other guides every action and thought.
A little boy greets his father as he returns from work with a
question: “Daddy, how much do you make an hour?” The
father is surprised and says: “Look, son, not even your mother
knows. Don’t bother me now, I’m tired.” “But Daddy, just tell
me please! How much do you make an hour?” the boy insists.
The father finally gives up and replies: “Twenty dollars.”
“Okay, Daddy,” the boy continues, “Could you loan me ten
dollars?” The father yells at him: “So that was the reason you
asked how much I earn, right? Now, go to sleep and don’t
bother me anymore!” At night the father thinks over what he
said and starts feeling guilty. Maybe his son needed to buy
something. Finally, he goes to his son’s room. “Are you asleep,
son?” asks the father. “No, Daddy. Why?” replies the boy.
“Here’s the money you asked for earlier,” the father said.
“Thanks, Daddy!” replies the boy and receives the money. The
he reaches under his pillow and brings out some more money.
“Now I have enough! Now I have twenty dollars!” says the boy
to his father, “Daddy, could you sell me one hour of your
time?” Today’s gospel has a message for this man and for all of
us, and the message is that we need to invest more of our time
in our family life.

*A priest, a minister and a rabbi are walking home from their
respective services when they pass a bar. The minister says, "I
wish we could all go in and have a drink tonight." To this the
priest says, "let me try something I'll be right back." So the priest
goes into the bar, sits down and orders a drink. When the
bartender comes over to get paid the priest says, "my son, I have
already paid you for my drink.", to which the bartender replies,
"I'm sorry father, it must've slipped my mind." "It's alright my
son. You have a good night", the priest says and leaves. He goes
outside to tell the minister and the rabbi what to do. The minister
goes in and comes out successful, so the rabbi goes in. He orders
and when it comes time to pay he says to the bartender, "listen
sonny I have already paid for my drinks tonight". Now the
bartender replies, "I'm sorry rabbi, you're the third man of the
cloth to come in here tonight I must be slipping!" to this the rabbi
replies, "that's ok sonny, but can I have the change from my
fifty." *Two Jewish men are walking down the road talking,
when they see a sign saying, "Convert to Catholism and we shall
pay you $100." One of the men says, "I think I'm going to
convert, what about you?". The other man says, "No, I like being
Jewish. You go ahead and I'll wait for you here." So, one hour
passes and the man comes out. The Jewish man asks, "Did you
convert?" The new catholic says, "Yes, I did." The Jewish man
then asks, "What about the $100?" The catholic man then yells,
"You Jew, you only think of money!" *A customer was bothering
the waiter in a restaurant. First, he asked that the air conditioning
be turned up because he was too hot, then he asked it be turned
down cause he was too cold, and so on for about half an hour.
Surprisingly, the waiter was very patient, he walked back and
forth and never once got angry. So finally, a second customer
asked him why he didn't throw out the pest. "Oh, I really don't
care or mind," said the waiter with a smile. "We don't even have
an air conditioner."
Father Sunny is away from January 2nd to 9th.
Please note that there will be no weekday Masses.
Father Don Layden CSC will be celebrating
weekend Masses of January 6th and 7th.
