Priest’s message STOP SUFFERING?

One of the most disconcerting books of the Old Testament is the Book of Job, since it deals with a very controversial subject: human suffering. Can a man be innocent and suffer diseases and calamities? The Book of Job resolves this dilemma, showing suffering as an opportu-nity for purification to receive greater and more abundant blessings. He ends by emphasizing that God, being the very source of Justice, is entirely free to bestow his blessings where, when and whom he wants. That human beings suffer, some more others less, when we suffer and why, rests totally the inscrutable Will of God, Owner of the world and our Owner. But we also know that God directs all his actions and all his permis-sions, to our greatest good, which is the goal towards which we are going: the Eternal Life. Job laments, complains and arrives at despair, but believes in God and invokes him. However, the story of Job takes place long before Christ. But with Christ, our attitude towards suffering has to be different. If the Son of God, innocent, took on our sins, what remains for us? The Gospel often shows us Jesus relieving human suffering, especially curing diseases and driving out demons (Mk 1, 29-39). And we know that sometimes God heals and sometimes does not, and that God can heal di-rectly in a miraculous way or indirectly through medicine, doctors and medicines. All healing has its source in God. God can also not heal, or heal earlier or later. And when it does not heal or alleviate suffering, or when it takes to heal and relieve, we have at our disposal all the graces we need to bring suffering with hope, so that it may produce fruits of eternal life and redemption. Of redemption? That’s how it is. Our sufferings united to the sufferings of Christ can have redeeming effect for ourselves and for others. Because human suffering is so controversial, Pope John Paul II touched on the subject frequently and, early in his pontificate, he wrote his Encyclical "Salvifici Doloris" about the redemptive value of human suffering. There he told us: "Every man has his share in redemption. Each one is also called to participate in the suffering through which redemption has taken place ... Christ has raised human suffering to the level of redemption "(JP II-SD # 19). So what attitude to have before suffering, illnesses, calamities? Stand against? Claim to God? God can alleviate suffering. We know. God can heal. And you can do it-even-miraculously. But only if He wants, and He wants it when it suits us for our ultimate good, which is our eternal salva-tion. So in asking to be healed or relieved of some suffering, we must always pray as Jesus did before his Passion: "Father, if you want to take this test away from me. However, my will be done not yours but yours "(Lk.22, 42). And, while the test lasts, while the suffering or illness lasts, do as Pope John Paul II asked us: to unite our suffering to the suffering of Christ, so that it can serve as a redemption for ourselves and for others. It is the most profitable attitude and, by the way, the most intelligent, be-cause who can oppose the Will of God? Who can change the divine plans?

Uno de los libros más desconcertantes del Antiguo Testamento es el Libro de Job, pues trata un tema muy controvertido: el sufrimiento humano. ¿Puede un hombre ser ino-cente y sufrir enfermedades y calamidades?

El Libro de Job resuelve este dilema, mostrando el sufrimiento como una oportunidad de purificación para recibir mayores y más abundantes bendiciones. Termina resaltan-do que Dios, siendo la fuente misma de la Justicia, es enteramente libre para otorgar sus bendiciones dónde, cuándo y a quién quiere.

Que los seres humanos suframos, unos más otros menos, cuándo sufrimos y por qué, descansa totalmente el la Voluntad inescrutable de Dios, Dueño del mundo y Dueño nuestro. Pero sabemos, también, que Dios dirige todas sus acciones y todas sus permi-siones, a nuestro mayor bien, que es la meta hacia la cual vamos: la Vida Eterna

Job se lamenta, reclama y llega a la desesperación, pero cree en Dios y lo invoca. Sin embargo, la historia de Job tiene lugar muchísimo tiempo antes de Cristo. Pero con Cristo, nuestra actitud ante el sufrimiento tiene que ser otra. Si el Hijo de Dios, ino-cente, tomó sobre sí nuestras culpas, ¿qué nos queda a nosotros?

El Evangelio nos muestra muchas veces a Jesús aliviando el sufrimiento humano, sobre todo curando enfermedades y expulsando demonios (Mc. 1, 29-39). Y sabemos que a veces Dios sana y a veces no, y que Dios puede sanar directamente en forma milagrosa o indirectamente a través de la medicina, de los médicos y de los medicamen-tos. Todas las sanaciones tienen su fuente en Dios. También puede Dios no sanar, o sanar más temprano o más tarde. Y cuando no sana o no alivia el sufrimiento, o cuan-do se tarda para sanar y aliviar, tenemos a nuestra disposición todas las gracias que necesitamos para llevar el sufrimiento con esperanza, para que así produzca frutos de vida eterna y de redención.

¿De redención? Así es. Nuestros sufrimientos unidos a los sufrimientos de Cristo pueden tener efecto redentor para nosotros mismos y para los demás.

Debido a que el sufrimiento humano es tan controversial, el Papa Juan Pablo II tocó el tema con frecuencia y, bien temprano en su pontificado, nos escribió su Encíclica “Salvifici Doloris” sobre el valor redentor del sufrimiento humano. Allí nos di-jo: “Todo hombre tiene su participación en la redención. Cada uno está llamado también a participar en el sufrimiento por medio del cual se ha llevado a cabo la reden-ción ... Cristo ha elevado el sufrimiento humano a nivel de redención” (JP II-SD #19).

Entonces, ¿qué actitud tener ante el sufrimiento, las enfermedades, las calamida-des? ¿Oponerse? ¿Reclamar a Dios? Dios puede aliviar el sufrimiento. Lo sabe-mos. Dios puede sanar. Y puede hacerlo -inclusive- milagrosamente. Pero sólo si El quiere, y El lo quiere cuando ello nos conviene para nuestro bien último, que es nues-tra salvación eterna.

Así que en pedir ser sanados o aliviados de algún sufrimiento, debemos siempre orar como lo hizo Jesús antes de su Pasión: “Padre, si quieres aparta de mí esta prue-ba. Sin embargo, no se haga mi voluntad sino la tuya” (Lc. 22, 42). Y, mientras dure la prueba, mientras dure el sufrimiento o la enfermedad, hacer como nos pidió el Papa Juan Pablo II: unir nuestro sufrimiento al sufrimiento de Cristo, para que pueda servir de redención para nosotros mismos y para otros. Es la actitud más provechosa y, de paso, la más inteligente, pues ¿quién puede oponer-se a la Voluntad de Dios? ¿quién puede cambiar los planes divinos?
