Pastor’s Corner July 27, 2015

Dearest Parishioners of Mary Star of the Sea, Christ’s peace to all of you. As many of you know, I have been given the gift of being the new associate pastor here. Many of us know each other; some of us do not. This letter is a way for me to briefly introduce or reacquaint myself with you as my priestly ministry begins at this wonderful parish.

I was born in San Pedro in 1975. My family is among the oldest families here, having immigrated to this town in 1883. We have been members of Mary Star for generations. I was baptized here, made my first Confession here, and received my first Holy Communion here. I was an altar server here for many good years in my youth, and always took great joy in being so close to the most central and sacrificial mystery of our Faith in the Holy Mass. It was among the most beautiful days of my life when I celebrated my first Mass here as a priest two years ago. To have now been assigned as your associate pastor—to be a spiritual father to the very community which has fathered, mothered, nourished, and supported me—is a humbling honor. My faith journey has taken me into many lands, and many lives. I have had the gift of seeking God among peoples of various cultures and traditions, a journey which brought me home spiritually in an even deeper way to the fullness of truth in Christ and His Church, and which now brings me home physically to you. A great paradox of our Faith is that the more we seek, the more hungry we become for the truth that we have found. We are never satiated, but rather thirst more and more for the divine life. The deepest passions of my heart were awakened through this search, which only intensifies with time. I am ever filled with joy to discover and to rediscover daily the Church’s wonderful way of life centered upon the Sacred Liturgy in its transcendent beauty, the peace and fire of the spiritual life, and the call to conversion of the true Gospel, and I am blessed to come home and live this way of life with you.

In the Heart of Mary, Father Cassian DiRocco

Quotes of the Week A SECRET The secret of happiness is to count your blessings while others are adding up their troubles.

—Anonymous GOVERNING OUR PASSIONS Whoever governs their passions is master of the world. We must either command them, or be commanded by them. It is better to be the hammer than the anvil.

—St. Dominic

First Reading — The people of Israel receive bread from heaven in response to their grumbling (Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15). Psalm — The Lord gave them bread from heaven (Psalm 78). Second Reading — Put on the new self that has been created in God’s way (Ephesians 4:17, 20-24). Gospel — I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger (John 6:24-35).

God’s Work We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being “God’s work.” But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God’s work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is “God’s work?” “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent” (John 6:29).

Help Wanted

Today we hear a continuation of the “Bread of Life Discourse” from the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel. We should try to place ourselves once again in the crowd that has been following the Lord. They just experienced the astounding miracle of the loaves and fishes. The Lord tells them that the bread of God will give life to the world. We can imagine ourselves being inspired by this saying and prompted to respond as Jesus’ followers did: “Sir, give us this bread always.” Isn’t this the real motivation behind coming to Mass week in and week out? Here, we find the very presence of Christ—in the word and in the Eucharist. Here we find the bread of life. Here we find the One who promises that whoever comes to him will never hunger and will never thirst. Let us allow this reality to sink in today as the word of God comes alive in our presence. Customs surrounding wedding rites are often in tension with our liturgical tradition. Sometimes practices are almost forced on engaged couples. Anyone who has ever planned a wedding knows how quickly the invoices expand. A hundred dollars here, a hundred there, often for non‑essentials, when more deeply traditional practices, like an expression of charity for the poor, fall by the wayside. One such practice often labeled as “deeply traditional” is the aisle runner for the bride. Actually, the American tradition is to clean our church buildings, in contrast to European village churches, which often had dirt or cobblestone floors. There, a band of linen (rented) or a carpet of flowers might be set in place for a bridal party. Here, plastic roll‑ups are procured and positioned by the ushers for the bride’s entrance. The problems are many, not the least of which is that there is no “bride’s entrance” in our official liturgy. Another is that in a wedding Mass, the communicants have to navigate the treacherous aisle with the sometimes-slippery runner. The aisle runner is neither a treasure nor a tradition, and by omitting it, the couple who asks for canned goods for the poor to be brought to church at their wedding Mass will find an extra hundred dollars or so for the cause! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
