RESPECT LIFE

Nine abortion businesses have closed in California. The latest is in Paso Robles due to “community pressure.” Planned Parenthood had also announced that it had closed 3 locations in New Mexico, their only PP in Wyoming, 4 locations in Iowa, 1 each in Colorado,

and southern Nevada. Now is the time, more than ever, to come together to end abortion in our state of CA where 1/5 of all US abortions occur.

Pro-abortion Democrat Senator Connie Leyva from San Bernardino authored Senate Bill 320, which if passed will force UC and CSU

Student Health Centers to distribute the Chemical Abortion Pill, intended to kill human life up to ten weeks of pregnancy.

The Trump administration has re-instated, and expanded, something the abortion movement disparages as “the global gag rule.” Such a rule would force Planned Parenthood and other reproductive health providers to either stop discussing abortions with their patients or stop receiving Title X money. And they’re complaining-loudly! They are labelling this legislation as an “attack” on “medical ethics”-

as though the murder of a vulnerable, unborn child could be considered ethical.

Riverside County Superior Court Judge Daniel Ottolia invalidated CA’s assisted suicide law. The judge agreed with Attorneys from Life Legal Defense that the CA state legislature violated the state constitution by passing the assisted suicide law during a special ses-

sion that was limited to healthcare issues. Almost immediately, CA Attorney Gen Xavier Becerra appealed the decision-but the ap-peals court ruled to let the lower court decision stand.

The Supreme Court will hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women’ Health Organization on December 1st. The case is a direct challenge to Roe

v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood.

PRAYER IS OUR MOST POWERFUL WEAPON IN THE WAR TO PRESERVE THE SANCTITY OF LIFE.

DEAR PADRE Previously you wrote that the Church is the bride of Christ, and we should remain faithful to that bond. Is there an-other reason to remain in the Catholic Church? The Church is also the body of Christ. When Jesus ascended into heaven, he left his disciples with the mission he had received from the Father: instruct everyone in Jesus’ teachings and baptize them into his divine life (Matthew 28:19–20). Through the Church, Jesus would remain present in the world. Some take offense because the Church claims the authori-ty of Jesus himself to teach. It teaches that marriage is between one man and one woman, that contraception and abortion are immoral, that capital punishment is a sin. Jesus himself may not have expressly addressed these issues, but he said to his apostles, “Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me” (Luke 10:16). And to Peter he said, “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:19). It’s true that since the time of the apostles some members, and even Church leaders, have caused scan-dal. The Lord asks that they, like Peter, repent and live a life of obedience and service to the Lord. That’s why it’s im-portant that we examine our own actions. Someone who abandons the Church due to scandals within its ranks should realize that encouraging others to abandon the bride of Christ and the body of Christ is a scandalous act itself. Fr. Gary Lauenstein, CSsR [email protected]

DID YOU KNOW? Simple touching rules for children Adult apprehension about discussing touching safety can get in the way of creating a safe environment for children, but doing so is critical to children’s well-being. Keep the touching rules short and sweet: No one has the right to touch a child’s private parts except to keep him or her safe and healthy. If someone tries to touch a child’s private parts, the child should say “No!”, run away, and tell a trusted adult. For more information, request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Teaching Touching Safety and Preserving Inno-cence” at lacatholics.org/did-you-know.

When things go wrong, we con-fess our sins in tribulation; when things go well, we confess or pay praise to God in the rejoicing of justice. TOGETHER IN MISSION – 2022 Every parish of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will have the opportunity next weekend, February 19 & 20, to make pledges for the Annual Appeal, “Together in Mission” which assists parishes and schools in need. Now that we are beginning to emerge from the COVID pandemic, the theme for this year is “AS ONE WE BELIEVE”. Everyone will have the opportunity to make a pledge (that is payable over a 10-month period of time). The goal for Mary Star of the Sea Parish has been established at $39,794 and once this goal is reached, the balance of the funds will all be returned to our parish – YOUR PARISH. We are confident that you will continue to support the life of the local Church. For those who have already responded to the letter from Archbishop Gomez, we express our THANKS! Now is the opportunity for everyone to join in this special appeal to help us move “AS ONE WE BE-LIEVE”. Pledge envelopes will be distributed at each Mass next weekend in every parish. Another option this year is to use your cell phones to scan the QR code found on all of the Together in Mission materials and in our par-ish bulletin and scroll down to find our parish on the list. We are grateful for your prayerful consideration this week of your pledge gift. God bless you!
