More than 130 people packed Nambour CWA on Thursday May 15, to see volunteers from the Nicklin

electorate receive Community Service Awards from Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington.Mr Wellington said, “The awards ceremony is my way of saying thank you, to the many people who give so much to others without expecting anything in return. It is an opportunity to let people know their efforts are appreciated and our community is a better place because of them.”Awards were presented to ten organisations and 27 individuals. Among the Award recipients were:

MARY VALLEY COMMUNITY NEWS INCThe Mary Valley Voice began publication in 1991, as a result of an initiative of Veronika and Glen Spicer, providing news and articles of interest for the people of Kenilworth.Twenty three years down the track and Veronika is still involved with the paper in the capacity as Chairperson of the Mary Valley Community News Inc. and together with her wonderful team they are now producing 3,000 copies of this widely read and informative publication twice a month. The members of the Mary Valley Community News Inc. are well known in the Kenilworth Community with a number of them having received Kenilworth Living Treasure awards. The Mary Valley Voice itself has also received a Sunshine Coast Environment Council Media Award, and was a runner up in the Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce Not for Profit Business Awards.KENILWORTH CHEESE WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL COMMITTEE

Since its inception in 2008 the annual Kenilworth Cheese Wine and Food Festival has showcased and promoted local produce especially popular cheese and dairy products to help small and micro businesses in the Kenilworth area which has faced economic challenges.The committee, a dedicated hardworking group of volunteers have managed to lift the local economy, donate to local service groups, increase the morale and social wellbeing of the community and make Kenilworth an annual tourist destination. The resounding success of the Food Fest is testimony to the committee’s hard work and dedication.

Other recipients from the Kenilworth area were Rod Bloomer for the Kenilworth Celebrates! Arts Festival and Shelly Higgs for Belli Park Rural Fire Brigade.

To the MARY VALLEY VOICE. If you are reading this on the 6-7-8th December then we have made our

publishing date. If not, then we are in big trouble. Presuming all has gone well, I thank the KENILWORTH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND CITIZENS for their support, also Margret and Brian Smith for their invaluable assistance with my errant computer and not forgetting Dorian Osborne who has spent so much time helping me with other computer problems that the dogs do not bother to bark when he arrives. We would not have gone to print if it were not for the talents of my wife Veronika who just happens to be a Graphic Artist, trained in the collation of the printed page. My thanks to the contributors of copy, please keep the stories coming in. By next edition I hope to have yet another problem sorted out with my computer and all the above mentioned people can resume their normal lives again.

We can only print the news that interests you if you prompt us with information. We want to examine in depth the local issues that effect our area that are ignored, or glossed over in other publications that service the broader community. I am Glen Spicer who at the moment does everything from writing to delivering the finished product to the post office. I need help! MARY VALLEY LINE – REqUEST FOR ExTENSION

Messrs H. Walker and T. Bridges, MM L. A., yesterday introduced to the Minister for Railways a deputation from the Kenilworth and Upper Mary Valley district, who proffered a request for an extension of the Mary Valley line some eight or nine miles, with a view to its ultimate extension to Woodford. The deputation included Councillor Lowe (Chairman of Maroochy Shire Council) and other members of the council, Messrs E. Pickering (representing the Kenilworth branch of the Farmers’ Union), John McGinn (representing the Kenilworth Farmers’ Association), D. Beattie (of Kenilworth Station), and other representatives of Teutoberg, Obi Obi Maleny, and the surrounding areas.

Mr Walker said the deputation was most representative of the settlers, and they were gratified to know that they had to meet a Minister who knew the quality of the land in the district and the value of its timber. They asked that the construction be authorised this year, believing that an old survey made long ago when the rival routes to Gympie were being contested, could be utilised. The extension would tap a fertile and closely settled country. The timber to the tapped would alone warrant the construction.

Mr Bridges supported the request as a farmer of the district, and other members of the deputation pressed upon Mr Paget’s attention the great handicap at present encountered in carting produce.

Mr Paget said he had frequently regretted that the length of the line originally authorised had not been greater. There had been difficulty experienced in finding an economical way into the valley. He believed they had found the cheapest route now, but it was certainly not economical, nor would any extension of it be economical. He could not promise them that an extension could be put before Parliament this session. He had received a report on the proposed route from Mr Amos, which indicated that it would be very costly. The report on the country was

very favourable. He (Mr Paget) was favourably disposed to their request, nor did he regard the Mary Valley line anything like completed in running, only 24 miles. He hoped yet to see it go right through and join the other line at Woodford. A preliminary to that would be the line to Kenilworth. The old survey had been made in 1885 and a new survey would have to be made, but he could not possibly promise that the plan would be put before Parliament this session. He would have the survey made as soon as possible, and meanwhile he thought they might urge on their local authority the need for improved roads to the line already authorised.

If this deputation had been successful and the Mary Valley Railway been extended through Kenilworth to Woodford before 1920 – how might that have impacted on the development of this part of the Mary Valley? The members of this community at that time understood how important good transport systems were – and the community is still waiting in 2014.

We all send Fay our very best wishes.The Christian Women’s Group will be having their regular breakfast meeting at the Maleny Catholic Church on 28 June at 8am. St Luke’s, Kenilworth, will be holding a Street Stall on Saturday, 21 June with the usual range of goodies. The Maleny Anglican Parish is conducting a series of workshops on the art of drawing. The response has been overwhelming. A jewellery making workshop is planned for November.All in together, this fine weather! The next Ecumenical Service in Kenilworth will be held on Sunday 29 June.See you in church!

KPC NEWS

KPC thanks the wider Kenilworth community for supporting our Gymkhana on Sunday 18 May.

Many local businesses sponsored trophies and ribbons and donated gift vouchers for our multi-draw raffle. Local members helped by event judging or scribing for an age group. 85 riders came from Zones 6 and 26. Parking filled the space recently acquired by the Hall Committee.

Events included Presentation, Rider Class, Jumping, Bending, Barrels, Wagon Wheel, Bounce Pony, Bondfield Bend, Cambooya Classic and Cabarlah Caper. The winner of each age group’s Rider Class competed for Champion Bareback Rider, which was equally won by Jessie Falconer (Mary Valley) and Peta Andrew (Mooloolah).

KPC winners of trophies included Caeli Hinkler (4th 12 years), Matilda Law (4th 14 years), Bronte Law (3rd 16 years) and Jodi Gillis (1st 16 years). Lana Gluis got 4th in Presentation, 6th in Bending, 6th in Wagon Wheel. Jodi Gillis won the KPC Highest Points trophy and perpetual shield.

Well done to all our riders, members and their extended families for helping out. Thanks to Wayne and Joyce for being available with their first aid skills. We had many compliments from how our gymkhana was run, how many helpers we had, and how great our food was! Without your continued support, events like this would be impossible for our small club to run.

On 10/5/14, at Caloundra Pony Club’s Hunter Trial, Rachael earned a Championship rug in the Chickens Class of 23 riders and Lana enjoyed her first cross country. Catriona and Sonia helped on judge points and gate stewarding.

On 11/5/14, at the Maroochy Pony Club Gymkhana, Jodi got 4th place trophy in the 16 years. Lana got 1st in Best presented and 6th is Bending. Alice competed in the big field of the 14 years and Rach enjoyed her day in the Associates.

KENILWORTH POSTAL NOTES‘MORE THAN JUST A POST OFFICE’

Isn’t it nice to find out that Kenilworth is ahead of the times? Recently the CEO of Australia Post announced

that the company was looking at extending the opening hours of its corporate Post Offices next year to include Saturdays. This was in response to customers who have difficulties collecting their parcels during opening hours throughout the week. Well, the Kenilworth Post Office has been open on Saturdays for at least the last 15 years. The operating hours on Saturday recently changed, and we are now open from 9am to 11.30am on Saturday mornings.

Kenilworth students put on their walking shoes on Friday 23 May, dismounted the school buses at

Kenilworth Rural Supplies and walked safely to school. There was lots of “looking left, looking right and looking left again”.

COMBINED COMMUNITIES ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

The inaugural Kenilworth/Conondale Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday 20 June, at Conondale

State School.

Traditionally, Kenillworth’s school has held inter-house swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals between Banksia and Waratah students. In some age groups, there is only one competitor and in some age groups there are five competitors.

To foster healthy competition, we are extending sporting opportunities for our students and merging our inter-house carnivals with Conondale State School’s inter-house carnivals. This gives our students the opportunity to compete against a greater cohort of students in our local area which will bring a desire to increase the given output.

From a practical perspective, it means carnival days are shared between the schools i.e one year Conondale will host the athletics, the next year Kenilworth will host the athletics. Alternatively, Kenilworth will host the swimming carnival on the year Conondale hosts the athletics. It also makes great sense to share resources and staff.

Kenilworth students placing in the inter-school carnival will continue to represent Kenilworth State Community College at the next level of competition, the Small Schools Carnivals.

The concept gives greater opportunity for our Kenilworth community to get right behind our school and give greater support to our Kenilworth students. There is nothing like a little bit of inter-community rivalry.

The proposed changes to sporting carnivals have been on the drawing board for a number of years and as it is the final year of Year 7 in primary schools, both Conondale State School and Kenilworth State Community College staff feel it is the perfect time to merge carnivals.

So please mark down Friday 20 June, in your diary as a day to come and support our Kenilworth students as they compete against Conondale.

to place third in the 11 year boys 3km race at the recent Small Schools Cross Country Carnival held at Kenilworth State Community College. Zeke was selected to represent the Small Schools Team at the Nambour District Primary Schools Cross Country held recently.

READERS’ CUP

A team of five Year 6 and 7 students recently represented Kenilworth State Community College

at the Readers’ Cup held at Immanuel Lutheran College. Students participated in a quiz-type competition revolving around a selection of six novels. A special thanks to the team of Emma Douw, Vienna Field, Zac Pearson, Alisha Engle and Kyle Engle who have dedicated their spare time to reading a selection of these novels and represented KSCC as the “inaugural” Readers’ Cup team.

BIGGEST MORNING TEA

The KSCC senior students, together with their teacher,

Mrs. Jaye Shaw, recently organised the Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser on behalf of the queensland Cancer Council. Senior students baked all morning tea goodies that were then shared with junior students, staff, parent and community members

for a gold coin donation. A total of $206 was raised for the Queensland Cancer Council. Year 2 student, Nicholas, donates to a very good cause.

GENEROUS DONATION FOR KSCC LIBRARY

KSCC would like to thank the Kenilworth Masonic Lodge for their very kind donation of $50 to

purchase books for the library. The presentation was made to the school by John McNiven at our special ANZAC Day service during which Jim McKillop gave a heartfelt talk about his tours of Vietnam, stressing how he hoped that none of the students ever had to face war.

Kenilworth CWA HallA community committee was

formed to see if the Kenilworth CWA hall could stay open and functioning as a Community Centre due to the impending sale of the hall. The Queensland CWA has decided to auction the site and

building on June 14. Despite the committee’s best efforts, they’ve been unable to secure any assurances from the CWA that it remains as a community hall.It’s a shame that so much of our historic infrastructure has an impending use by date. Unfortunately council can’t jump in to financially assist in all of these situations. As I have previously stated, I would be happy to put the notion forward to Council , whereby council part-fund this if the local community took control and was able to generate the bulk of the source funding.Any feedback from the community or individual philanthropic would be welcomed.On the road to improved maintenanceIf you’ve noticed some of the entrances and roundabouts at our major towns looking a bit tired lately, a solution is hopefully on the horizon. I will soon be meeting with Amanda Yates who is the Regional Director at the Department of Transport and Main Roads to discuss how we can ensure these areas can be better looked after.Brush up on road rules around schoolsI’m very aware that pick up and drop off areas around schools can be pretty chaotic at peak periods, but it might pay you to brush up on the road rules and regulations around these areas.Police are cracking down on drivers who flaunt the rules and it’s understandable given these areas where congregations of kids are present, need the utmost care from drivers. Pump outs…Pump outs and their respective charges are always a hot topic on the range, especially around budget time when residents feel the impacts of further rises in charges. I’ve been lobbying relentlessly for a better deal for all people concerned and while it’s too early to say too much at this stage, I hope to have some good news in the near future.

I hope you’re comfortable with the changes we’ve made and that this revamped version better depicts the symbolic imagery of the local terrain and flora and fauna.

It is showtime and I have been handed some devastating news. Energex has delivered to my

mailbox an “Interruption to Power Notice”. Normally this “notice” goes without much “notice”, but not this particular one. It’s shattering, it’s annoying, it’s frustrating, and there is not a thing I can do about it. How the heck does one cook for the show without power for oven and beaters?Entrants in the world of Show Cookery know there is a small window of opportunity to cook your best prior to judging day. This pretty well means, the day before judging you’re slaving away from sunrise to sunset and beyond. The day is usually quite stressful enough without now being advised my oven and beaters will be non-operational from 8am until 3.30pm on Wednesday 11 June.Section 18 for Show Cookery is hotly contested by many talented local cooks. There’s an opportunity to be awarded by judges the “Best in Show” ribbon for the senior and junior section. We are still having break and enter offences committed in the Division and the vast majority of these are on dwellings which

are unattended. We are, with assistance from Gympie Police and Gympie Detectives, conducting inquiries and extra patrols of the

Division but we need the assistance from the general public.It is obvious that the offenders know that the premises are unattended. If you see anything suspicious ring Imbil Police on 5484 5222, Gympie Police on 5480 1111 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000. If you see a suspicious vehicle in your area that may be ‘casing’ the area, try to obtain a registration number and good description of the vehicle. If you have someone turn up at your premises that you think may be suspicious, let us know. This may be someone turning up at your front door unexpectedly asking about a lost dog, renting premises or some other random reason.It is better to report something that turns out to be legitimate than not to report it and have you or your neighbour broken into. If you ignore it, it may be your place that is broken into next. Make sure your premises are secure. Long gone are the days when you can go out in the backyard and leave the front door open. Do not leave valuables in your vehicle if it is unlocked. Lock your vehicle whenever you leave it, even in the garage at home.Hopefully, with co-operation from the Police and the community, we can rid our area of these criminals. Remember, crime is not just a Police problem; it is a community problem and takes effort from the WHOLE community to make the Valley a great place to live.Roaming cattle are again causing a problem in the Division. We have had a few crashes between vehicles and cattle recently and luckily, these have not resulted in injuries to people. However, some have resulted in the death of the cattle which is a big expense to the owner.If you have cattle, please try to keep them on your property. Check fences regularly and the roadway in your area to make sure cattle are not getting out. The owner of cattle that stray and are involved in crashes, can be held liable for any damage to vehicles, injuries to occupants of vehicles and in a worst case, the death of a person. If people see cattle straying, ring the Gympie Council on 1300 307 800 all hours or your local Councillor, as they are responsible authority for straying cattle.
