Kenilworth Pony Clubs highly anticipated Halloween Muster weekend was held on the 29 and 30 October. It

was attended by witches, goblins, trolls and vampires. Instructors over the two days were Rod Herman Chief Zone 6 Instructor (Dressage), Tanya Mitton author of “Seven Steps to the Mindset of an Equestrian Champion” (Jumping and Flatwork), Beryl Burkhart (Equitation), Vicky English (Jumping), Salena Manning (Cross Country), Danielle Higgins (Flatwork), Sonia Law and training instructor Rachael Law (Sporting/Games). Saturday night members enjoyed a bbq and had a laugh and even a few scares playing Halloween games. The winner (for the second year in a row) of the turn your Mummy into a Mummy by creatively wrapping her in toilet paper was Vannessa Emery. Well done to Winona and Olivia! Best Halloween costume was awarded to the little pumpkin, Jordan Boon. This weekend is a definite highlight in the KPC calendar. We would like to thank all involved in its organisation and say a big thank you to the instructors.

On Sunday 6 November the Zone 6 Gymkhana was held at Nambour Showgrounds. Nine riders represented KPC: Jordan Boon, placed 2nd overall in his age group and was awarded Smartest on Parade for the 8 years and under; Vienna Field; Caeli Hinkler; Sarah Reardon, placed 3rd overall in her age group; Romy McCullough, placed 1st overall in her age group; Jessie Falconer, placed 1st in her age group; Alexa Field; Rachel Law; and Sonia Law. KPC was awarded 2nd place in the March Past. Well done to Jessie Falconer who won Supreme Rider.

KENILWORTH CHRISTMAS PARTYFRIDAY 23 DECEMBER 2011

Last year’s Christmas Eve Party was a bit of a washout as the rain forced us to cancel the rides. However, we just

moved up into the Kenilworth Hall and Santa still came giving out presents. Although our numbers were down a bit on previous years, we still all had a good time.

Undaunted by last year’s events, Kenilworth will again be holding its annual Christmas Eve party at the Showground, except that it will be on Friday 23 December as Christmas Day is on Sunday this year. The evening starts at 5pm with free entertainment and rides for kids of all ages. The canteen will be operating and you will be able to purchase a wide variety of food and drinks. Bring your blanket, chairs and find a spot on the oval for your picnic.

For those of you who are new to the district, this is a good opportunity to meet people and enjoy the community atmosphere that we encourage. One of the highlights of the evening is the arrival of Santa to distribute presents to all the children at 7pm. Santa starts with the youngest and works his way through to the oldest. There have been years where Santa has distributed a present to a child over 70.

By visiting any of the shops in Kenilworth displaying the “Santa shops here” sign, details will be provided to ensure that Santa does not miss your child at the Christmas party. After Santa leaves, the monster raffle will be drawn. Prizes are donated by the majority of the businesses in Kenilworth and District. Raffle tickets will be available from 5pm onwards. This is the major fundraiser to ensure that we will again be able to hold the Christmas Eve party next year. The raffle draw can last up to 30 minutes depending on the number of different prizes so stick around. You might be lucky.

Put the date on your calendar and if you can help out on the evening either setting up, cooking and serving, or cleaning up, please contact either Tonia at Boxsells or Michael at the Kenilworth Post Office. Come along and enjoy the spirit of Christmas at the Kenilworth Christmas Eve Party. We hope to see you all there.

THE KENILWORTH TELEPHONE ExCHANgE IN THE 1940’S TO 1950’S

Historical Notes:

The Post Office and Exchange was the centre of the small town. I started work on the exchange when I was thirteen (1944) and continued until I married – married woman were not allowed to work in those days.

As far as I can remember we had up to 50 subscribers when I began work with a number of party lines. These were a single line with two or more families on the one number with a letter added to that number. To ring them we used morse code i.e. “S” was three short rings. The switchboard worked with a system of shutters that would fall down when a subscriber turned the handle on their home telephone, indicating the number of that subscriber. The telephonist would place the back plug of a pair into a corresponding hole for that number to answer the call with “number please” and push the front plug of the pair into the required number’s hole (if it was a number for the Kenilworth exchange). A small lever at the front of the switchboard was pushed forward to answer and then pulled back to ring. The ring was completed by turning a handle that was connected to a generator. If the call was for a party line number you would click the lever for the required morse code letter of that number (e.g. 12 S would be a three short rings).

Local calls were also made to the smaller exchanges in the district – Gheerulla, Booloumba and Obi Obi. The way out of Kenilworth per phone was by trunk lines which we had to direct to Eumundi, Nambour and also Imbil which was very dicey so was not used unless absolutely necessary.

Trunk line calls to distant places had to be directed through Nambour and the telephonist would connect the number for the subscribers. Each trunk line call was recorded on a paper docket which had to be noted a second time on a spread sheet which was totalled at the end of the month and forwarded, along with the dockets to district office. The mathematics of the officer in charge of the Post Office was then checked by District Office and if any errors were found – all was returned to that officer for correction before a telephone account could be finalised.

If the caller wanted an Imbil number the telephonist would ring Nambour, who put the call through to Gympie exchange who would then transfer it to Imbil. Trunk calls were timed by the

telephonist in three minute segments, with different amounts charged per three minutes depending on distance from initiating exchange. The telephonist would cut into the conversation when three minutes had expired and say “Three minutes, are you extending”. If the call ended at that point the docket was completed, otherwise the subscriber was charged for each three minute extension of the conversation.

Another Gift from the Past from one of the “Hello Girls” from the telephone exchange. The knowledge of the working of a plug and cord switchboard is one of the aspects of our past that may soon be lost forever if not recorded for future generations. If anyone has photographs of the interior of the old Post Office the Kenilworth Museum would be most grateful if the owner would loan them for copying for our collection – one of the missing links of local history.

ROYAL LIFE SAVINg WARNS AgAINST DROWNINg IN POOLS

Horrific figures show almost 300 children under the age of five have drowned in the past nine

years with latest data revealing 28 children under five lost their lives to drowning in the past 12 months.

Shocking figures suggest around 60% of all toddler drowning happens in the child’s own home and around 58% of all toddler drowning victims are aged

two years or under. They also warn a staggering 85% of home pools do not meet current safety standards or are not fenced at all.

People in Kenilworth and surroundings areas are being urged to take action to help reduce toddler drowning. Royal Life Saving has developed two websites that give people resources and tips to help them make a difference.

At the recent AGM of the Mary Valley Stags Rugby League Club, it was decided to call for Expressions of Interest for

the volunteer position of Canteen Convenor for Stags home games for the 2012 Rugby League season.

The Mary Valley Stags currently share their six home games between three home grounds at Imbil Showgrounds, Kenilworth Showgrounds and Jack Spicer Oval, Kandanga. In the past season the Stags attracted excellent numbers to their home games however due to other commitments our Canteen Convenors are unable to participate next season.

OUR COMMUNITYDAgUN STATE SCHOOL STEPS BACK IN TIME

Dagun students stepped back in time from Monday 31 October to Friday 4 November, when visiting Sovereign

Hill gold museum in Ballarat. Students participated in a two day school program at the Ragged School, where they took on a role character and dressed in costume.

They attended school as they would have on the goldfields during the 1850s. Students became a part of the Sovereign Hill living museum, experiencing everyday life and school during the Gold Rush. They were truly living in history. Students panned for gold, witnessed the amazing qualities of gold during gold pouring, experienced the hardships of underground mining, and the many tensions of our early multicultural and European forebears. The children were able to ride in a Cobb and Co coach, watch troopers fire a volley of shots to celebrate the end of the Crimean War, and watch firsthand the blacksmiths, tinsmiths, confectioners, candle makers plying their trades. The highlight for students was the laser light show, Blood on the Southern Cross, which dramatically told the story of Peter Lalor leading the miners’ revolt during the Eureka Stockade.

The Dagun School P&C, along with local business sponsors, Mary Valley Timbers, have again supported students at Dagun School for their biannual excursion last week. All students in years 1 to 7 travelled to Melbourne to experience the Old Melbourne Gaol and Ned Kelly’s armour, Captain Cook’s cottage and Polly Woodside, a three masted tall ship built in Belfast in 1858. They then travelled to Ballarat and attended a two day school program at Sovereign Hill, a living museum of life on the goldfields.

Road signage regarding the Mary ValleyMVI representatives are among those being consulted on Main Roads signage for the Cooroy/Curra highway bypass. Requests have been made to identify the Mary Valley by name and include individual names of townships on major signage.

Reps will also make contact with tourism and council bodies responsible for signage upgrading at the Sunshine Coast end of the Mary Valley to raise the possibility of carrying a consistent message of “Mary Valley Country – come out to play” across all signage.

Mary Valley Country marketing committeeMVI has employed Imbil resident Lesa Bell as the Mary Valley Country project coordinator until June 2012. Lesa will work with the MVC Marketing Committee and will be responsible for rolling out initiatives including the building of a dedicated tourism website, developing a social media and online marketing strategy, and assorted collateral for the promotion of the valley as a tourist destination. Funding for these project initiatives is being sought from Gympie Regional Council Mary Valley Economic Development Fund.

Upcoming events and activities:• A new shelter is to be erected at the Kandanga cemetery and on-going working bees are going well.

• Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce (MVCCI) has developed a handout to new residents which will be ready for December. It includes information from SES, DPI and Gympie Regional Council and will be available at post offices. There is a possibility that it can be made available to Kenilworth with minor changes.

Business and community directoryMVI is submitting an application to the Gympie Regional Council Mary Valley Economic Development Fund to produce the 2012 directory. As a result of this funding option, the deadline for

‘MARY VALLEY DO-ERS’ TEAM SUCCESS IN RELAY FOR LIFE

On Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October, while the rest of the Mary Valley was sleeping, a small group of us (see

photo colour page7) were walking laps of One Mile in Gympie, to commemorate the battle of cancer victims; to remember those who were lost, and celebrate the survivors. The event was a relay style, with the teams required to walk continuous laps, from 3pm on the Saturday, through till 9am Sunday, having at least one member on field carrying the baton at all times. Not only did our team accomplish that (with a very small number of walkers), but we also took the prize for best overall theme, and ‘best dressed at 4am!’. Our theme was ‘calories for a cure’, as we burned numerous calories for our cause, and consumed our fair share as well, to get us through the long night!

The event was preceeded by weeks of preparation, including fundraising, which was generously supported by the community businesses and residents alike, by donating prizes and purchasing raffle and money board tickets. Our goal was to raise $1000. Thanks to our generous support, which was primarily from our own small community, we raised $1588 for the Cancer Council!

We would like to thank the Imbil Friendly Grocer, Commacht House, Brett and Shelly Watson, River Rats Fishing Adventures, RiverLearning: Sport, Health, Outdoors, Mary Valley Health and Beauty, Imbil Butcher, and Rattler Cafe for their generous support.

The event was an amazing experience for all involved and a great way to represent the Mary Valley. I would like to congratulate the team and their families: Linda and Lisa Rozynski, Carmel Billiau, Debbie Rozynski, Shellie Watson, Cheryl O’Dwyer, Heidi Rodgers, and Luke Maher. BAMBOO MIRACLE MULCH AT BELLI

Bamboo, the world’s friendliest environmental resource is now producing ‘miracle mulch’.

Following an ABC gardening show report featuring the benefits of mulched bamboo, Durnford Dart at Bamboo Australia commenced mulching experimentation with bamboo harvested on his farm at 1171 Kenilworth Rd, Belli Park.

With an estimated 6000 tonnes of bamboo on his farm and a sizeable mulching machine, Durnford and his staff harvested and mulched several clumps of bamboo.

The mulch was generously distributed throughout the bamboo groves and his wife’s rose garden.

Following a shower of rain the bamboo grove produced an unexpected spurt of new shoots and a flush of new flowers in the recently planted rose garden.

The comparison between bamboo and cane mulch had a similar effect with the roses producing abnormally prolific growth from bamboo whilst cane mulch was normal.

Vegetables planted in a recently established plot are thriving in the bamboo mulch.

With these results Durnford has now commenced thinning his bamboo groves and mulching into bulk bags for delivery to Sunshine Coast gardeners.

BOOKS FOR KIDS

Kick off the 2012 National Year of Reading by helping disadvantaged kids start their own library.

Sunshine Coast Libraries, in partnership with the Salvation Army, are running their annual Christmas book drive to give the gift of reading to children across the region from 1 November to 13 December.

Books for Kids has been operating for 12 years and has provided over 4000 kids with a new book for Christmas.

Donate a new children’s or young adult’s book to any Sunshine Coast library to enable the Salvation Army to distribute these to disadvantaged families across the region in time for Santa’s yearly visit.

For every book donated a star, named in your honour, is placed on one of our Christmas trees at each library.

Two little boys, aged eight and 10 were VERY mischievous. They were always getting into situations and their parents knew all about it. If any mischief occurred in their town, they were usually involved. The boys’ mother heard that a preacher had been successful in disciplining children, so she asked if he would speak with her boys. He agreed but asked to see them individually. The preacher, a huge man with a booming voice, sat the younger boy down and asked him sternly “do you know where God

is, son?” The boy’s mouth dropped open but he made no reply. So the preacher repeated the question in an even sterner tone, “where is God?” The boy screamed and bolted from the room, ran directly home and hid in his closet where his older brother found him.... ‘What happened?’ The younger

brother replied ‘we are in for it this time, GOD is missing and they think we did it!”

Gary and I, along with our family and their families would like to take this

opportunity to wish each and everyone of you a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year for 2012.

Council road maintenance is being carried out in these areas. Grading of Lowe Rd. Drainage works on Lowe, Summerville, Kandanga Ck, Diamondfield and Kandanga-Amamoor Roads. The bridge/culvert works for Coonoongibber Ck Rd is now in the planning process so work will start there soon.

Congratulations to Gympie Civic Centre for winning the ‘Inspirational Performance Award’, the 1st place in the GRC Climate Smart Business Cluster Region No.2 recently, for their efforts in, saving energy, waste management, improvements in water saving and increases in recycling of materials.

On Friday 9 December is the Imbil community Christmas party in Imbil Memorial Park from 5pm onwards, so do come along and join in with the festivities on the night.

Neighbourhood Disputes ActCopies of the Neighbourhood Disputes Resolution Act are now available at my office. I have had many inquiries from residents who have had concerns about overhanging trees and boundary fences, but been unable to reach agreement with neighbours about possible solutions. This amended legislation should clear up confusion about neighbours’ responsibilities regarding these issues. Special Olympics staged on the CoastI always enjoy being a part of the Special Olympic events held on the Sunshine Coast, and was happy this year to officially open the Tennis State Games being hosted at the Coast as part of the Special Olympics. It was very exciting to visiting and local competitors who participate in the parade of athletes, and then carry the Olympic torch to launch the event. This year’s Games saw participants and visitors come from Bundaberg to the Gold Coast. Congratulations to the Sunshine Coast branch which hosted the tournament and gave these competitors an opportunity to compete against visiting athletes and meet some new tennis enthusiast friends along the way.
