Dear Ms. O’Rourke,

I wanted to express to you, your Office of the President, and your University my sincere sympathy and support to you for the events that transpired today. Having worked in academia for many years I wanted to express my outrage at what happened, and also my outrage at how some in the media are attacking your administration. I have no doubt that those making decisions did their best. Many I am sure, would reiterate to you what I am saying, that knowing so well the workings of a college campus, the decisions made were made in the best interests of the school, its students and its staff. I’m telling you this as I think it is important for you all to hear words of support and not of second guessing. I have lost students in the past to violence and I understand the indescribable pain. However, I can recognize my inability to truly grasp what you are going through given the numbers, and the horrific experience that your campus has had to go through.

I also want to add that I have had the pleasure of knowing some Hokies over the years. They are truly amongst the proudest alums I’ve ever come across. I know that in spite of the history that now has been forced upon you, the pride and wonderful legacy of Virginia Tech grads that is carried with them, will prevail as what Virginia Tech is known for.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Kim, One of our English professors called me about a student in her class who wlll not communicate verbally. Apparently this has been a pattern of behavior with this student in several English classes. Even Lucinda Roy experienced this with him. The studentis an English major. This particular class is one in which classroom dialogue is very critical to the teaching/learning process and the grade. I cannot tell from his file if (1) English is his second language and/or (2) there may be a cultural issue at play here. His name and student # follow. I'm at a bit of a loss as to advice to give the professor. I have learned that the student has not self-identified to the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities. Any advice? Jane Ann,

I appreciate the note. Not sure if 8am would work. Also they are asking that only Essential personnel be on campus on Tuesday.

I suspect that we should wait to see what happens at 2pm at the Convocation.

Also, I suspect that we would be best suited to support Student Affairs and other areas of the university. We can find out the ways that we can best support them in their efforts with the students, faculty and staff.

I hope everyone is safe during these trying times.

Chris has asked me to send an email updating you on the current crisis situation on campus. As you all know by now there has been a shooting at Ambler Johnson residence hall. Police are still in the middle of questioning residents and have released very little information at this point. What we do know – and even this should be kept confidential at this point if press, parents, etc. call – is that the shooting occurred on the 4th floor and two people were transported to the hospital. We do not have their full names at this point but we do know that one of them was an RA and one was a resident. We don’t know anything about the condition of the victims at this time but from overheard conversations it appears to be very serious. They think that a third person was involved but they do not know the whereabouts of that person as yet, and as you’ve seen by now the police are urging people to be cautious around campus. Chris and I have already talked with one resident who was affected by the incident, but there may well be others including RAs who may emerge today and in the next few days Residents of the 4th floor are being questioned and released one at a time and we may see some of those today if the residence hall staff feels they need to bring them over. Stay tuned and we’ll send out more info as we know anything. In the meantime, stay alert on triage for any affected students and consider offering any flexible time on your schedules today or in the next few days should students in crisis emerge.

Thanks,

Cathye

I thought you all should be aware of this email sent to me 12 Sept. 2006 by MaryAnn Lewis. To corroborate something Ed was saying to a New York Times reporter, I mentioned this email today. I did not provide its text.--Lisa

Kim, Thanks for the information. Many faculty members have attempted to deal directly with his situation. Perhaps the English Conversationgroup would help him. Will you all contact him? I will share thisinformation with Lisa Norris who currently has him in class and who is the faculty member with the concerns this semester in her very "class discussion intensive" class. Mary Ann

I agree with Ray that our office and we as individuals can provide support to those areas whose specialty is dealing with these kinds of issues. Additionally, only essential personnel are to report to work tomorrow and none of us are consider essential (sorry).
