Grand Master’s MessageWell Brothers, it finally looks as if the rains have slowed down some... and the heat has taken it’s place!

The outdoor degrees are well under way and although the rain may have soaked the grounds in “The Holler” forcing Hudsonville indoors, it hasn’t dampened their spirits.

I want to thank the ladies in the Grand Lodge Office along with the Elected Grand Lodge Officers for splitting up to cover all the events which have been happening at home and all across our state. From putting the new office togeth-er, attending the veteran’s dinner in Western Kentucky, while others suppported our Rainbow Girls at their Grand Assembly in Louisville and the DeMolay Boys summer Conclave at Jadez, to the outdoor degrees hosted by Joppa, Rus-sell Springs, Hudsonville, and Salyersville Lodges.

Also a “shout out” for all the hard work and efforts the Brothers from James W. Alley Lodge No.869 for hosting “ The Grand Masters ATV Ride” in Eastern Kentucky.

Thanks fellers for helping to pull this wagon and sharing with the load. I always have said, and truly believe, That no man can run a lodge, or this Grand Lodge, by himself. It takes us all working together as a team to keep the train on it’s tracks and running which each and everyone of you have shown!

Thanks to all those that helped with the unpacking, placing, and getting the “new” Grand Lodge Office in shape for the official opening and dedication of our new home. It was a great success and the turnout of Brothers, friends, and family was great to see. Thanks for helping us to make this landmark weekend in Kentucky Free Masonry truly a special one.

We should all be proud as peacocks to how it has all come together, and we now can close the books once again to owning our building that houses our Grand Lodge Office of which the Craft of Kentucky can be very proud.

I want to thank all the Nobles of our four Shrine Temples in Kentucky, along with The Imperial Shrine, for all the courtesies you extended to Miss Oletta and myself during our visit to Nashville,TN. for “The Imperial Session”. Congratu-lations to Imperial Sir Jim Cain on his year and best wishes to Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder for his upcoming year. We had a great time!

Do good unto all,

Fraternally Thine,

Gary C. RoseGrand Master of Masons, Grand Lodge of Kentucky F.& A.M.

“I Didn’t Know That……” Identical in many ways to the operative Free Masons of England, were the corporations of masons which existed throughout the Continent. Two of particular interest, were the Steinmetzen (stonecutters) of Ger-many and the Compagnonnage of France, who like the English Free Masons, had their secret words and initiation ceremonies, honored the ‘two great pillars’, and traced their history to King Solomon’s Temple.

The statutes of the German stonecutters reflected the same charac-teristics as the English Constitutions. Their principle legend, that of the Four Crowned Martyrs (for which the famous Masonic Research Lodge “Quatuor Coronati #2076” is named), was also recognized by the masons of France, and Italy and is found in rhyme in the oldest English Constitution (1390), the Regius or Halliwell Manuscript, al-though not in any other English Constitutions.

Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite - Orient of Kentucky

The French Compagnonnages contained journeyman cobblers, saddlers, tailors, cutlers, hatters, as well as stonecutters, masons, carpenters, cabi-netmakers and so forth. The journeyman stonecutters and carpenters were nicknamed Loups Garoux (werewolves) and the Drilles (goodfellows), and were said to be founded by Master Jacques, overseer of Solomon’s Temple, and by Father Soubise, the head carpenter. Another legend states that Master Jacques is none other than Jacques DeMolay.

The Compagnons of Liberte (the Loups) knew the Hiram Legend and in their version, wild dogs dug at the foot of the grave and discovered the body of Hiram. It is not known if these legends existed before Freemasonry entered France from England, however, some Masonic scholars have traced ‘loups’ (wolf cub) into the English term ‘Lewis’, the son of a Mason.

All of this points to a possible common source of origin between the masons of Germany, France and England. Both the Steinmetzen and the Companonnage had everything that their English counterpart had, to develop into modern Freemasonry, but this did not happen. Freemasonry, an English term, was imported into both Germany and France, after the formation of the premiere Grand Lodge England of 1717. Neither the Steinmetzen, nor the Companonnage recognized Freemasons of England as brothers, however, many did join the ranks of the Freemasons, and both Germany and France were very instrumental in the fabrication of the so called ‘high degrees’. Did the degree framers rely somewhat upon the unknown legends of either the Companonnage or the Steinmetzen for their so-called “high” degrees? Perhaps we will never know!

“The four crowned martyrs were Severus, Severianus, Carpo-forus, and Victorinus, who by the commandment of Diocletian, were beaten with plummets of lead unto death. The names of whom could not be found, but after a long time they were shown by divine revelation, and it was established that their memory should be worshipped under the names of five other martyrs, that is to wit Claude, Castor, Symphorian, Nicostratus, and Sim-plician, which were martyred two years after the four crowned martyrs. And these martyrs knew all the craft of sculpture or of carving, and Diocletian would have constrained them to carve an idol, but they would not carve it, nor consent to do sacrifice to the idols. And then by commandment of Diocletian they were put into tuns of lead all living, and cast into the sea about the year of our lord two hundred four score and seven. And Melchiades, the pope, ordained these four saints to be honored and to be called the four crowned martyrs before their names were found. “–taken from “The Golden Legend” .....…………………..What do you think??

Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite - Orient of KentuckyGreetings Brothers,

We are now in the month of July, halfway through the 2019 year, and the Valley of Covington is undergoing major changes. They include physi-cal, educational, ritual and fraternal improvements on those already in existence. With the blessings and assistance of our experienced leadership, our newer and younger members are accepting positions of leadership and bringing back some of the traditional ritual work and education that have, in the past, made our Valley so respected and visible. I will use the space provided to me in this article to expound on some of them.

First and foremost, we need to extend a grateful “Thank You” to our Secretary/Recorder, Keith Dreier and brother Eric Creech, for undertaking some huge projects in the temple and bringing them to fruition. These projects have resulted in new lighting throughout much of the temple, a revitalized dining facility and a renovated elevator with up to code electrical systems that have saved the Valley thousands of dollars in repair bills. For those who have not been in the temple within the last year, you need to come and see for yourself.

Brother Bill Lorenz and his crew of volunteers have brought our library up to snuff and now can provide members with all the educational read-ing and research material to make a first class presentation on virtually any masonic subject. We have brothers who are studying and discussing among themselves, the rituals and symbolism associated with them and how they relate to our beliefs. All of this is beginning to expand our fraternal experience with Brothers visiting other Brothers to learn what they are doing in their home lodges and/or Valleys. Even our Brothers to the north are making inquiry! Brad Drew and Greg England are expanding and improving the VMAP and Master Craftsman programs to allow Brothers in distant areas of the Valley to participate and thus increase their knowledge.

Although Jeff Bryant has decided not to continue as our Personal Representative, he has taken over as the “Director of Degrees” and with Brothers Barry Eastham and Luke Bentley are providing our candidates with an excellent introduction to the Scottish Rite by explaining such things as; where our rituals originated, how they relate to our beliefs and how they bring light out of the darkness.

As a result of these Brothers taking an active interest in our fraternity, I am extremely happy to report that we were able to gain seven new “Mas-ters of the Royal Secret” at both our March and May Reunions for a total of fourteen new members. I firmly believe that we will have as many, if not more, participate in our October Reunion. Twenty-one new members in one year is a rare experience for us and I believe it will become more common as time progresses.

Brothers, this is just a small sampling of what is happening and planned for the Valley of Covington. We urge you to come join us and be a part of a great thing that the Grand Architect has provided. I want to leave you with this. For many years now, I have used a phrase to express my view of what Masonry has meant to me. I cannot recall if this is my original thought or if I simply read or heard it said somewhere in my travels. It simply says, “I would prefer to sit in Lodge with three Masons than thirty members”. Think about it.

In the bond of brotherhood, Ray Murphy, Personal Representative, Valley of Covington

Barker Lodge #129We held a formal bib overalls nite, Saturday, May 11.
