Mass Communications students earn their undergraduate degrees by successfully completing 36 credit hours (12 classes) of coursework in the major. This consists of 15 hours (5 classes) in required Mass Communications courses, with the remaining classes taken in one of the tracks above. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2019), employment of media and communication occupations is projected to grow 4% from 2018 to 2028 which will result in over 28,000 new jobs.Demand for media and communication occupations is expected to arise from the need to create, edit, translate, and disseminate information through a variety of different platforms. Payscale.com (2019) provided a listing of the top 28 occupations for communications majors stating the national median, mid-career pay ranging from approximately $44,000-$92,000. Students wishing to study Mass Communications along with another degree can declare an 18 credit hour (6 class) minor area of study. Students seeking careers in content management or social media marketing can declare an 18 credit hour (6 class) minor area of study. Hands-on Learning

Recent Internship Organizations

The department features multiple hands-on learning labs for student use: Student Publications newsroom, TV studio, video editing lab, audio booth, and iMac computer lab. Students can work for the Student Publications staff, which produces The Campus newspaper and MediaOCU.com, the student media web site. They also can produce and host television shows for OCU-TV.

Mass Communications students are encouraged to complete at least one internship with a media organization to gain experience and network with professionals.
